Sticking to the thriller genre that’s been his stomping ground on both the big and small screen, Stephan Rick’s second English-language film “The Good Neighbor” is a remake of his 2011 German-language debut feature of the same title. The setting has changed, but the story remains largely untouched. Now Luke Kleintank and Jonathan Rhys Meyers play new acquaintances whose shared complicity in an accidental death creates increasingly unsavory conflict.
Competent performances and a slick veneer make this revamp go down easily enough. Still, one wishes Rick had placed more emphasis on Hitchcockian suspense, rather than trusting the slow-moving tale will hold us via plot and character complexities that really aren’t particularly evident.
American journalist David (Kleintank of the series “FBI: International” and “Man in the High Castle”) has accepted a job with the “European Press Network” in Riga in the wake of a bad relationship breakup. While he gets settled,...

"She'll tell on you, she'll ruin your life." Screen Media Films has revealed an official trailer for The Good Neighbor, a thriller remake from German filmmaker Stephan Rick. He's remade his own 2011 German film of the same name (or Unter Nachbarn) for English-speaking audiences, with a new cast this time around. The Good Neighbor English version stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Luke Kleintank, Eloise Smyth, and Bruce Davison. The budding friendship between two very different neighbors takes a tragic turn when David accidentally runs over a young woman and kills her. When he gets involved with her sister, things get even more complicated. It's a twisted psychological thriller about the "unspeakable things" that some will do to protect their secrets. This seems like another of these "true crime" stories that Hollywood is churning out all the time now because so many people can't stop watching them. It does look like this gets extra intense.

In the not-so-grand tradition of "The Vanishing," "The Grudge," and "Delivery Man," German filmmaker Stephan Rick has opted to step behind the camera for the English-language remake of his foreign-language original film. Fortunately for Rick, his 2011 thriller, "Unter Nachbarn," never received a U.S. release; ergo, the twists and turns of this fiendish-looking yarn, now titled "The Good Neighbor," will be completely new to the vast majority of audiences. How fiendish-looking? See for yourself!

Vin Diesel vehicle “Muscle,” Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” and the Zoe Kravitz-directed “Pussy Island” have proved early sales standouts at a contained virtual Pre-Cannes Screenings whose pre-sales market says a lot about the resilient vitality and ever greater complexity of the international film business.
Budgeted at a reported $60 million, which would make it the biggest project at the Screenings, “Muscle” moved waves when Leonine paid a reported high seven-figure pre-sale figure for Germany.
In an out-of-the-box move, Miramax announced Monday that it had secured worldwide rights to “The Holdovers,” reuniting Payne with “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti.
In earlier banner deals, reinvigorated under Michael de Luca, MGM landed global rights to “Pussy Island” and North America on Sean Penn’s “Flag Day,” the biggest film in Cannes competition.

International distributors will get a first look at action thriller “Gasoline Alley” at the upcoming Cannes Market. The film, which stars Bruce Willis, Luke Wilson and Devon Sawa, is represented by Highland Film Group.
The project was first announced at the European Film Market in Berlin, around the time that it was moving into production. Principal photography has now wrapped after set-ups in multiple U.S. locations.
The action follows a take-no-prisoners kind of company boss, played by Sawa, who is accused of a triple murder in Hollywood. He subsequently allies with the two tough detectives (Willis and Wilson) on his tail. And together they uncover a much larger truth than any one of them had imagined.
“Gasoline Alley” is directed by Edward Drake, who recently directed Willis in “Cosmic Sin.” The screenplay is by Tom Sierchio (“The Girl Who Invented Kissing”).
Corey Large and Sierchio are producing the film with BondIt Media Capital financing.

Val Kilmer stars in a new horror thriller called The Super and he makes sure to put on his creepy face. The story centers around a former cop who becomes the superintendent of a large New York City apartment building where people start to mysteriously go missing.
This actually looks like a decent film and it’s great to Val Kilmer back in action and making movies. It seems like its been awhile. A lot of fans have been worried about his physical state in the past, but he actually looks good in this movie! Seeing him here in this trailer actually got me more excited to see him back as Ice Man in Top Gun: Maverick.

"I know you were in my apartment, Walter." Saban Films has debuted a new trailer for a horror thriller film titled The Super, from German director Stephan Rick. The film is about a former cop who becomes the superintendent of a large New York City apartment building where people mysteriously go missing. The screenplay is by John J. McLaughlin, one of the writers on the Black Swan script, as well as Hitchcock and Parker. Patrick John Flueger stars as Phil Lodge, who becomes the new super. The full cast includes Val Kilmer, Louisa Krause, Mattea Conforti, Taylor Richardson, Paul Ben-Victor, Yul Vazquez, Andrea Lynn Green, and Travaris Spears. I'm not really sure why Kilmer looks so much like Al Pacino in this, but I don't mind really. I just wish this looked better than every other apartment horror film before. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Stephan Rick's The Super,...

Saban Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the “The Super,” starring Val Kilmer and John Flueger (“Chicago P.D.”).
Stephan Rick directed from a script by John J. McLaughlin. The genre film is based on an idea from “Law & Order” creator/producer Dick Wolf, who produced through his company Wolf Entertainment alongside Tom Thayer, Patrick Rizzotti, and Brett Forbes.
“The Super” centers on the mysterious disappearance of several tenants at a luxury New York City apartment building. Flueger portrays the building’s new superintendent and a former NYPD officer, who immediately suspects the strange maintenance man, played by Kilmer. With his daughters’ lives on the line, he must decipher the cryptic riddles in which Kilmer’s character speaks to solve the case of the disappearances before it’s too late.
“‘The Super’ marks a return to form for Val Kilmer, who delivers a truly menacing performance,” Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley said.

Exclusive: German actor to star in film version of Tom Hillenbrand’s Devil’s Fruit.
Germany’s Moritz Bleibtreu has been cast as a “culinary Bond” in a film version of Tom Hillenbrand’s bestseller Devil’s Fruit (Teufelsfrucht) on the adventures of the Luxembourg chef and amateur sleuth Xavier Kieffer.
The €6m co-production between Luxembourg’s Iris Productions, France’s Rezo Productions, Germany’s Iris Productions Deutschland (Ipd) - and possibly Belgium-based Iris Films - will be the second directorial outing for the Iris Group’s chief, producer Nicolas Steil after his 2010 film The Duchess Of Malfi.
“This will be a real European crime story in various languages and with actors coming from different parts of Europe,” Ipd’s Andreas Eicher told Screen in an exclusive interview. “It has all the makings of a franchise as Hillenbrand’s books are set in different European countries “

What a mess! On one side we have a 2010 Canadian indie Good Neighbours, directed by Jacob Tierney, with Jay Baruchel, Anne-Marie Cadieux and Diane D’Aquila in the leading roles. On the other side – we have The Good Neighbor, (apparently an upcoming remake of the Tierney’s movie) which already has director Stephan Rick on board, and Sam Rockwell in negotiations to play the male lead. The news comes from Bd who report that Ross Partridge is in charge for the The Good Neighbor script, and that an offer has been made to Sam Rockwell although he’s yet to be attached. The new version should...

German director Stephan Rick is attached to direct "The Good Neighbor," a remake of Jacob Tierney’s 2010 Canadian indie suspense thriller "Good Neighbors".
In the original, Jay Baruchel played a young man named Victor who is new to Montreal. He attempts to make friends with the wheelchair-bound Spencer (Scott Speedman) and the cat-loving Louise (Emily Hampshire). Everybody is on edge, however, with a serial killer terrorizing the neighborhood. Xavier Dolan and Diane D'Aquila also starred.
Actor-turned-writer Ross Partridge ("Mutual Friends") is penning this new version which Sam Rockwell is said to have expressed interest in.
This take follows a journalist, David, who becomes close with his new neighbor, Robert. The night goes out of control when David accidentally kills a young woman.
Robert is already willing to protect his new friend, and helps hides the evidence. Things get strange when Robert will stop at nothing to keep his new friend from being taken away.

The Good Neighbour
Directed by Stephan Rick
Germany 2011
Falling somewhere between cold psychodrama and deliberate thriller, Stephan Rick’s The Good Neighbour is a slick, cyclical drama filled with moral anxieties and suburban violence.
David (Maxim Mehmet) moves next door to Robert (Charly Hübner). David is good-looking, young and ambitious. Robert is the opposite, yet the two form a friendship based on, if nothing else, proximity. On the drive home from a bar, David strikes a young woman with his car and kills her. Robert convinces him to leave the scene of the crime, but soon David falls for the victim’s sister Vanessa (Petra Schmidt-Schaller). Robert begins to feel left out…and doesn’t take it very well.
Director Rick maintains a fairly minimal style throughout, though his is far from the sparse, grief-stricken narratives of many of his German contemporaries. Preferring to stay mostly in medium shots, Rick...
