Interview With Sammy Boyarsky On Rampart
Appearing in a dramatic crime film based on true events can be taunting for any actor, but for a young actress in her first major role, the job can be even more daunting. Eighth grade student Sammy Boyarsky, whose only other film appearance was a minor role in the hit comedy Bruce Almighty, is successfully showing off her creative, artistic side in the new crime drama Rampart. As a result, Boyarsky has received positive feedback for her portrayal of Margaret Brown in the movie, which was released by independent film studio Millennium Entertainment.

Rampart, the sophomore film by writer/director Oren Moverman, provides a dark, visceral character study of a man unhinged. Set in 1999, the film centers on Dave Brown (played ferociously by Woody Harrelson), a Vietnam veteran and one of the most corrupt and brutal cops working in La. Brown, with his laundry list of vices (booze, pills, and promiscuity to name a few), is a remnant of the old system of police work at a time when change is necessary for the department. His personal life is no better than his professional life: Brown lives uneasily with his two daughters (Brie Larson, Sammy Boyarsky), who were mothered by a pair of sisters (Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon), both married to Brown at different points in his chaotic life. Credit: Merrick Morton/Courtesy of Millennium Entertainment Moverman manages to portray Brown as a complex figure who, despite his obvious flaws, evokes an unlikely...

Woody Harrelson, Oscar contender? That’s the word buzzing around his portrayal of a hardcore cop in Rampart, and the trailer proves their might be some weight to that statement. Check out Woody being good at being bad.
In Rampart, Harrelson plays a cop that doesn’t let a little thing like the law or people’s rights get in his way of serving justice, but is he really just a dedicated lawman that’s misunderstood or is there something darker flowing just beneath the surface?
Yes, you really do see mention of Oscar in the preview and it looks like Harrelson might stand a good chance at getting nominated because it’s obvious that his intensity is what drives the film.
Rampart, which also stars Ben Foster, Robin Wright, Anne Heche, Ice Cube, Sigourney Weaver, Cynthia Nixon, Ned Beatty, and Steve Buscemi, hits theaters on November 23rd.
Official synopsis for Rampart:

Woody Harrelson in Rampart For some of you the name Oren Moverman may not have immediately rang a bell, but I assume when I tell you he co-wrote and directed The Messenger, which ultimately earned two Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson) and Best Original Screenplay, perhaps you know who I'm talking about. Curiously enough, even though Harrelson was nominated for an Oscar for The Messenger, it's probably Ben Foster's performance from that film that most people remember. Well, all three are back for Rampart. This time Moverman teamed with crime novelist James Ellroy ("L.A. Confidential") with a story concerning the Lapd Rampart Division. Here's the synopsis: A genre-bending, 1990s Los Angeles police family drama, Rampart explores the dark soul and romantic misadventures of a never-changing Lapd cop (Woody Harrelson) whose past is finally catching up with him in the wake of a department-wide corruption scandal.

If you're more interested in the typical fall slate of festival entrees than summer's glut of tentpole action fare, this is a great week. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of films that will play the fest in September. This is a batch of about 50 titles, which makes up only a small chunk of the programming. Usually Tiff features between two and three hundred films. But these are some of the highest-profile entries. Below you'll find rundowns on the new films from George Clooney, Bennett Miller, Jay & Mark Duplass, Todd Solondz, Francis Ford Coppola, Cameron Crowe, Sarah Polley, Fernando Meirelles, Lars von Trier, Marc Forster, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, and Lynne Ramsay. No announcement yet of the Midnight Madness programming choices, always some of my faves, but this is a great start. This is quite the list -- there are easily thirty films here that could be potential top ten for 2011 candidates,...

The announcement was released yesterday of 53 titles, including 31 world premieres, and some of the biggest names of the year are among them. Most, if not all, of the films I am most looking forward to will be in attendance, and with the festival just around the corner, the time to get excited for these offerings is now.

It looks like we're in for another great year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I'm excited to be just a little bit closer to the action this time around. The very first titles from the 2011 fest were announced today, and there were definitely a lot of familiar faces among the 10 Galas and 43 Special Presentations. George Clooney is back with two films this year (The Ides of March and The Descendants) and many other Tiff alumni are returning with their latest works including David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method), Lars Von Trier (Melancholia), Todd Solondz (Dark Horse), Fernando Meirelles (360), Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive), Steve McQueen (Shame), Pedro Almodóvar (The Skin I Live In), Michael Winterbottom (Trishna) and Sarah Polley (Take This Waltz). Both Moneyball and 50/50 fill the requisite "big September release with awards potential" slots, while Roland Emmerich's Anonymous was a bit of a surprise pick. However, for the first time ever,...
