Nostalgia is a funny thing. From the unexpected resurgence of vinyl to modern-day flip phones, it’s pretty clear that the technical limitations of the past can often inspire the stylish trends of the future. One of my favorite examples of this is the ongoing analog horror craze, as I find it fascinating how many of the genre’s major creators appear to have been born after the decline of VHS tapes and eerie PSAs.
It’s almost like there’s a subconscious understanding that some stories are best told through fuzzy visuals and heavily compressed audio, which is why I appreciate flicks like Anthony Cousins’s Found Footage throwback Frogman, a cryptozoology-inspired scary movie that dares to incorporate lo-fi aesthetics into its storytelling during a time when most studios encourage filmmakers to make their projects look as generically slick and polished as possible. And if you also enjoyed Frogman...

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes appeared together in Derek Cianfrance’s epic crime drama movie The Place Beyond the Pines with the story from Cianfrance and Ben Coccio. Bradley Cooper also starred alongside the two in the movie that narrates three linear stories.
The filmmaker was reportedly inspired to write about the movie based on his experience as a father and had envisioned the main themes to be about father-son, masculine identity, and legacy. Upon its release, with moderate success at the box office, the movie received a positive response from the audience and the critics.
Gosling and Mendes are one of the most admired couples who are very private about their lives but a re-surfaced revelation from Derek Cianfrance goes on to show that they were always meant to meet and be.

Judging by some of the stories to have come out of the production of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," the making of the movie was a delight for everyone involved. For instance, /Film recently reported that the cast of the film kicked off filming with a slumber party for all the Barbies. Kens were not invited, although they were welcome to visit briefly, send gifts, or call in to say hello. Not surprisingly, Michael Cera, the actor to play the nondescript non-Ken Allan, was not invited to even say hello. Gerwig also held screenings every Sunday morning -- a kind of "movie church" -- to communicate to her cast what vibe she was seeking. The director even wrote a short prayer to Barbie that she recited to Warner Bros. executives. The film was playful and bubbly because the production was playful and bubbly.

Derek Cianfrance directed the late Ray Liotta in “The Place Beyond the Pines.”
I had an ambitious movie in my mind that was so sprawling I couldn’t quite get my head around it. So I started interviewing writers to help unlock my ideas. I met a couple of people and then I sat down with Ben Coccio at The Donut Pub in Manhattan. I started with an ice breaker — “What’s your favorite movie?”
“’Goodfellas,’” he said, not missing a beat.
“No way,” I exclaimed, “That’s my favorite movie, too.” Instantly, I knew we could work together. After a half-dozen donuts, Ben and I made a pact to write a screenplay together and, in it, a role for Ray Liotta.
“If we write it, he will come,” we agreed.
Flash forward four years. I’m sitting in my producer’s office in Hollywood and meeting with actors. And...

As there are upwards of 6,000 members in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, I simply do not have the time or wherewithal to graffiti on everyone’s house “Robert Redford?” However, I can at least make a post on the internet calling out those they have snubbed; exposing where their collective categorizing as a majority of old white males went wrong.
In keeping with Brian Tallerico’s Oscar snub list from last year, I am going to also share which films would be taken out in a snubbed one’s place, while focusing on the top eight categories - with two particularly impassioned snubs to round out an even ten. And as “Life of Pi” was the film to rail against in award season 2013, I will try, but flounder, to mask my painful disinterest in supporting the cause of kudos for Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska.”

As with any year, some people have begun arguing that 2013 was a bad year for film, because of the expected glut of effects-heavy blockbusters that litter the multiplexes each summer, or because there was a lack of auteur-driven storytelling for the majority of the year. Though it is indeed frustrating that studios hold their more prestigious films until the last month or two of this or any year, 2013 was an excellent year for film. You shouldn’t have to look first to Sound on Sight’s list of the 30 best films of 2013 for proof, but you should add it to the pile, no doubt. We asked our film writers to provide their personal lists of the 15 best films of the year; everyone’s number-one pick got 15 points allocated, everyone’s number-two pick got 14 points, and so on. (As you’ll see, the point values for each of the 30 films is included here.

Decadence, violence, love and space – Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw shares his fantasy award nomination list for 2013
• The 2012 Braddies
Awards season is now upon us and here, as every year, is my personal fantasy award nomination list for 2013, whimsically called the Braddies, which covers the period running from the beginning of the calendar year to the present. There are 10 nominations in eight categories: film, director, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, screenplay and documentary.
The reader is invited to nominate the winner in the comments section below, and perhaps to note omissions and evidence that the list betrays suggestions of sociocultural bias.
I like to think that these awards will one day evolve into an actual ceremony with chrome-and-glass statuettes, sponsorship from Sky Atlantic and a televised evening presided over by Dara Ó Briain or Mariella Frostrup. But until then, it exists in a world of fantasy only. And so,...

The Place Beyond the Pines is slow-burning drama that captures the audience with incredible performances from Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Dane DeHaan. The film doesn’t deliver the action the trailers promised but takes its times to make the characters matter while showing the long lasting consequences of their actions. The film was directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) - who wrote the screenplay with Ben Coccio, and Darius Marder. Along with Gosling, Cooper and DeHaan, the film stars Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Ben Mendelsohn, Rose Byrne, Mahershala Ali, Bruce Greenwood, Emory Cohen, Harris Yulin, Robert Clohessy and Olga Merediz. We are now officially half way through the year and so I’ve asked our staff to vote for their favourite films released thus far. Hollywood blockbusters may have disappointed us, but thankfully we can always rely on independent filmmakers to create some truly inspiring films. Rounding out the special mentions is Terrence Malick’s To The Wonder, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, and Cate Shortland’s Lore – all missing the cut by a couple of points.

The typical take on Best Original Screenplay is that it is the weaker of the two writing categories. Particularly before any precursor awards are handed out, pundits usually struggle to scrounge up a roster of even thirty viable candidates for the category. I guess this shouldn’t come as a surprise given originality’s placement on the endangered species list in Hollywood these days, but it’s a shame, because the category has often served as an outlet for the Academy to recognize innovative and daring films that would not be able to call themselves “Oscar nominees” otherwise.
Someone with as a distinct artistic voice as Terry Gilliam, for example, would not be able to declare himself an Oscar nominee had his masterpiece, Brazil, not been nominated for Best Original Screenplay back in 1985. That same year, in the exact same category, another 80′s Sci-Fi classic, Back to the Future, got...

Director: Derek Cianfrance; Screenwriter Derek Cianfrance, Ben Coccio, Darius Marder; Starring: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Rose Byrne, Dane DeHaan, Emory Cohen; Running time: 140 mins; Certificate: 15
Having released bruising marital drama Blue Valentine two years ago, Derek Cianfrance weaves something equally tender and raw with The Place Beyond the Pines, which sees him turn his focus to fathers and sons. Telling three consecutive stories - spearheaded by Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Dane DeHaan respectively - across a 15-year timeline, Pines is a nuanced crime epic with a Godfather-like focus on families and their vicious cycles.
In a performance that recalls his brutish vulnerability in Cianfrance's last film, Gosling plays motorcycle stunt driver Luke, whose priorities shift after a former fling, Romina (Eva Mendes) reveals that she has had his son. She's shacked up already and wants nothing to do with Luke, who's unable to bear watching another man...

The Place Beyond the Pines
Directed by Derek Cianfrance
Written by Derek Cianfrance, Ben Coccio, and Darius Marder
USA, 2013
There’s something very special about The Place Beyond the Pines, perhaps not in its plot as in its execution. Co-writer and director Derek Cianfrance slowly unfurls a tangled web, starting out simply in crafting a small-town tragedy that only becomes weightier as the film reaches its natural end point. The Place Beyond the Pines deals with characters in wholly realistic situations, toeing the line of melodrama but never tipping over, remaining fully grounded, levelheaded, and low-key even as the reverberations of a handful of actions from one generation topple over into the next, affecting more people with each response from its players.
Ryan Gosling stars as Luke Glanton, a thrill-seeking motorcyclist who works at a traveling carnival. While in Schenectady, New York, Luke reconnects with an old flame, Romina (Eva Mendes) and discovers that,...

The Place Beyond the Pines is a sprawling film from co-writer/director Derek Cianfrance about the connections between fathers and their sons, with drastic life decisions rippling through generations. The ambitious movie stars Ryan Gosling as circus performer-turned-bank robber, Bradley Cooper as a man of justice, Eva Mendes as a disturbed mother, Ray Liotta as a corrupt cop, and Dane DeHaan as the ultimate product of all of these characters’ decisions.
Cianfrance previously directed Gosling in Blue Valentine, the 2010 aching relationship drama starring Gosling and Michelle Williams. For her performance in the film, Williams was nominated for an Oscar.

Chicago – The first image that surfaced of Derek Cianfrance’s “The Place Beyond the Pines,” was that of a bleached blonde, tattooed Ryan Gosling seated on a motorcycle. For many viewers, that would be enough to earn their ticket, yet Cianfrance’s brooding epic is bound to give them far more than they bargained for. Some may feel betrayed, others will be hooked.
With the exception of “Brother Tied,” a 1998 effort Cianfrance dismisses as an “exercise in egomaniacal hubris,” the director’s first major feature film was 2010’s “Blue Valentine,” a shattering drama that juxtaposed the dawn and dusk of a relationship between two lost souls (played by Gosling and an Oscar-nominated Michelle Williams). “Pines” unspools an even more ambitious narrative structure, exploring the impact of violence on two generations of men in purely linear fashion. Each segment in the film’s three-act structure is self-contained, shifting the audience’s...

The Place Beyond the Pines leaves you tired and worn weary by as it revels in despair with no hope at the end of the tunnel. It's raw, real, downtrodden and forced. Is it good? It's solid. It's also too much of a "bad" thing. This is a drama that weighs on you like a ton of bricks as generations are affected by those before them -- the things they know; the things they don't know and what they'll soon learn. Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance exhibits his talent to tackle a sweeping narrative that runs all of two hours and 20 minutes, and the film's length is felt as a result of the weary state it leaves you in by the end. The story begins in the late 1990s, Luke Glanton (Ryan Gosling) is a stunt motorcyclist for a traveling carnival. During a stop in Schenectady, New York we learn...

-- The first image you see in "The Place Beyond the Pines" is of Ryan Gosling's shirtless torso, ripped and tatted atop a skin-tight pair of leather pants.
Don't get too excited. The long tracking shot that comes next is actually a better indication of where director and co-writer Derek Cianfrance is headed.
His camera follows Gosling's character from behind, Dardennes-style, through a garishly lighted traveling circus. Gosling's bleach-blonde "Handsome Luke" lights a cigarette and strides calmly but purposefully through his depressing surroundings into a loud and crowded tent, where he confidently climbs onto a motorcycle before entering a ball-shaped cage with two other riders to perform a death-defying stunt.
Over the next two-plus hours and across three connected stories, it will become clear that everything is very dramatic and everyone is doomed. You can try to redeem yourself but it's no use; the past always catches up with us.

It’s time for the first trailer for the upcoming crime-thriller The Place Beyond The Pines, which opens this spring! As usual – we recommend you to check it out.
