G4, the Comcast Spectacor-owned cable channel dedicated to gaming, has shut down — again.
Dave Scott, the Comcast Spectacor chairman and CEO, broke the news to the G4 staff in a memo circulated on Sunday. (IndieWire obtained the note; it’s posted below.) Comcast Spectacor is the sports- and entertainment-focused subsidiary of Comcast that owns the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers and used to own the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. Forty-five staffers at G4 lost their jobs immediately as a result of the decision.
The shutdown comes just under a year since the channel’s relaunch last November. The channel’s relaunch — first announced in July 2020 — followed seven dormant years for the gaming channel, which first began in 2002. The early version of the network was operated by G4 Media, a joint venture between Comcast and NBC Universal Cable.

G4 is shutting down — again.
Comcast Spectacor, the cable and entertainment giant’s sports and esports division, told G4 TV employees Sunday that the gaming network was shutting down effective immediately. The decision has resulted in 45 staff members of G4 TV losing their jobs.
In a memo, obtained by Variety, Comcast Spectacor chairman and CEO Dave Scott cited low viewership and said the network had not achieved “sustainable financial results.”
“Over the past several months, we worked hard to generate that interest in G4, but viewership is low and the network has not achieved sustainable financial results,” Scott wrote. “This is certainly not what we hoped for, and, as a result, we have made the very difficult decision to discontinue G4’s operations, effective immediately.“
Comcast Spectacor in July 2020 said it would reboot G4 TV, which NBCUniversal shut down in 2013 (after the network first launched in 2002). Russell Arons, the former Warner Bros.,...

Exclusive: Comcast’s Spectacor division is pulling the plug on video game-centric network G4 TV, whose early incarnation in the 2000s remains a cultural touchstone for many millennials, just a year after its relaunch.
In a memo set to be sent out to all employees, Spectacor CEO Dave Scott explained that the company’s investment and efforts to revive the network just didn’t gain traction.
A few dozen employees and contract workers are affected by the shutdown. Comcast said it will assist them with outplacement and consider some for internal opportunities.
The departure over the summer of Russell Arons, an experienced digital media exec who had come aboard as G4’s president in 2021, was a precursor to today’s news. Her duties were added to the portfolio of Joe Marsh, a Comcast Spectacor vet who has been CEO of T1, an international esports joint venture with Korea’s Sk Telecom.

Exclusive: Russell Arons, an experienced digital executive who joined G4 TV last September as president, has exited the recently revived network.
Arons, who has previously held senior-level positions at Warner Bros, Machinima and Electronic Arts, left her G4 post in July, multiple insiders confirmed to Deadline. Her departure came less than a year after her arrival was announced, and the exact circumstances remain unclear. Arons and Comcast Spectacor, the Philadelphia-based entertainment and sports division of Comcast that runs G4, both declined to comment.
Joe Marsh, an executive with extensive gaming-related experience at Comcast Spectacor, is expanding his role to encompass many of Arons’ former duties, according to a person familiar with the transition. Reanimated video game culture hub G4 will return to linear TV on November 16, with carriage deals in place on Verizon FiOS, Cox, Xfinity TV and Philo.
In announcing its return, the network also said it will also have a multi-year promotional and commercial partnership with Twitch. It also plans to continue putting out channel-specific content on social media and YouTube.
G4 originally launched in 2002 and was created by former Disney TV exec Charles Hirschhorn, who saw it as a successor to MTV in its ability to tap into youth culture. A number of notable personalities appeared on the network as hosts, among them Olivia Munn, Chris Hardwick, Kevin Pereira and Grace Helbig. G4 went dark in 2014 as its place on the dial was taken over by the Esquire Network, which would prove to be a short-lived branding exercise. On Wednesday night, G4, the gaming network that aired from 2002-2014 and recently announced a revival, held a charity special that saw its previous lineup of hosts — Olivia Munn, Kevin Pereira, Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb, Kristin Adams and Blair Herter — reunite for a night of nostalgia and reminiscing.
But, at the very end of the special (benefiting G4’s multi-day Gravython effort), a hint at G4’s future, not its past, shown in the form of WWE star Xavier Woods, also known as Austin Creed, knocking down the door and saving them from a scripted dire situation. With that, G4 announced that Woods would be its first signed talent for the new version of the network.

Long-dormant video game television network G4 appears to be teasing a comeback after sharing this video across various Twitter accounts related to the brand:

The video above features a virtual tour through a Raiders of the Lost Ark-style warehouse loaded with memorabilia from G4’s past. While the video is loaded with various Easter eggs that will surely please long-time fans, the biggest takeaway comes at the end of the video when the year 2021 is accompanied by the message “We never stopped playing.”
Various people are taking to Twitter to weigh-in on this video, but the most interesting messages come from former G4 on-screen personalities. Former X-Play hosts Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb seemed surprised by this announcement, with Webb hilariously weighing in that she’s “impressed someone remembered the password to the Twitter.”

Actor John Abraham and director Nishikant Kamat have been friends for years but the two will go head to head onscreen in the upcoming Rocky Handsome. The film, set in Goa, Mumbai, Pune and Seychelles, traces the journey of a man who goes on a rampage when the only person he cares about (a little girl) is kidnapped. Nishikant, who has directed the action thriller, also plays the antagonist — a Goan ganglord, Kevin Pereira.
His assistant directors believed that, since he knew the script inside out, he was the right choice for the role. Asked about it, Nishikant says, “I’m confident in front of the camera, but acting and directing simultaneously can be scary.”
Talking about his friend, director and now co-actor’s look and performance, John Abraham says, “When I learnt that Nishi would play the villain, I was quite excited. When I saw him getting out of...

A new streaming service is coming over the summer, when Lionsgate and the people behind Comic-Con join forces to create Cchq! The result sounds a lot like a former cable TV channel. Come inside for more details.
For those of you new to the cable scene, there was once a TV channel dedicated to nerds. It was known as G4. G4 housed a plethora of amazing shows like the original Japanese Ninja Warrior, X Play, and Attack of the Show. After some epic years, the channel was cancelled and changed to Esquire, which is still a good channel but anywhere near as great as G4. Now, it seems like Lionsgate and Comic-con are coming together to form something very similar.
Below is the complete Press Release of the service!

The first look of John Abraham for the film Rocky Handsome had set the temperatures soaring with his brawny look holding a gun in a dapper suit attire. And now we have the first look of the baddie of the film who is also making his directorial debut – Nishikant Kamat!
Nishikant plays the role of Kevin Pereira – a Goan gang lord who is bald, mean and the one to watch out for. Though the role of Kevin Pereira was supposed to be done by someone else, but due to last minute change, Nishikant’s close associates suggested he should do the role.
Since Nishikant knows the script inside and out he gave it a shot and is quite excited with the way it has shaped up.
When quizzed Nishikant about his role he said, I enjoy acting and am confident in front of the camera but doing it in your own film can be scary.

We’ve gone at length discussing the Nintendo World Championships on the NXpress podcast and needless to say, we weren’t very pleased with the outcome of the qualifying rounds (held in only eight cities). Considering how underwhelming that event was, we’re hoping for the best come this Sunday when the finals will be held in the Microsoft Theatre (formerly known as the Nokia Theatre). Today Nintendo has released more info for the event in a video posted on their Youtube channel. The second announced game for the championship is Splatoon, which according to the video is the first time the game has been played in a live tournament setting. In addition, Kevin Pereira, former Attack of the Show/Let’s Ask America host will be hosting the event. The names of the eight players invited were also announced which include Speedrunners Sinister1, Cosmo, Bananas, Trihex, Essentia, TheMexicanRunner, Smosh Games host Jovenshire,...

When I used to make semi-frequent appearances on "Attack Of The Show," it was always made easier by co-hosts Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn. Kevin walked that fine line between game show host and uber-nerd, and Olivia was the living embodiment of Amazing Amy's "Cool Girl" speech. Since she's made the jump to acting full-time, Munn's been defined, like most actors, by the strength of the material she's given. In the best written scenes on "The Newsroom," she's proven herself a fairly sharp and interesting performer. Bryan Singer seems to be a fan based on this Tweet: Excited to welcome @oliviamunn as Betsy Braddock! #Psylocke #XmenApocalypse #Xmen https://t.co/5f42gazret — Bryan Singer (@BryanSinger) April 13, 2015 Psylocke is a character who's had about as complicated a history as any of the X-Men, and Munn should make an interesting physical match for the character. Sounds like they're using "X-Men: Apocalypse" to...

Nerdist Industries has debuted a fall show perfect for this Halloween season. The company acquired by Legendary Entertainment premiered a new episode of The Real Housewives of Horroron October 30, 2014, with special guest star Chris Hardwick. Created by Kevin Pereira (from G4’s Attack of the Show) and Brea Grant (Heroes, Dexter), The Real Housewives of Horror parodies all those reality TV shows about the daily lives and “struggles” of rich housewives. However, the web series takes on a decidedly darker yet more comedic angle as the women in Nerdist’s version are all married to or interested in monsters, killers, or demonic spirits. In the newest episode “Dawn of the Dawn: The Dawnening,” Grant’s character Heather decides to host a speed-dating night for her friend Barbara Dawn (Brooke Seguin), who’s just getting over the death of her late, hatchet-wielding husband Cage Trollman. Barbara meets several eligible men, including...

Director James Gunn, in an hour-long chat with Kevin Pereira on the Pointless Podcast, opened up about his upcoming Marvel film, Guardians of The Galaxy. With the first trailer dropping last week, it looks like the folks behind the movie are ready to start peeling back the veil of secrecy that has surrounded the project since its inception.
Amongst the topics that were discussed was Thanos, the super-villain that was teased at the end of The Avengers in 2012. Gunn says that Thanos’s “employees” will be primary villains in Guardians, and implies that we won’t know too much more about the character’s true intentions during this film. “Here’s the thing, truthfully the Marvel Cinematic Universe takes out of both the 616 and Ultimate Marvel Comics universe, and then they recreate some elements themselves,” revealed Gunn. He then continued, “What Thanos wants in the comics is not necessarily what...

Revealing that he initially went to Marvel Studios in hope of doing a Hit Monkey movie, James Gunn recently talked all things Guardians of the Galaxy with Kevin Pereira following last week's teaser trailer debut. While a portion of the Pointless Podcast interview was also revealed last week, the full audio has the director discuss more Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel's "I am Groot" delivery, a "beautiful" overhead scene with Peter Quill, the motive of the mad titan Thanos and much more. "Rocket is a result of countless and cruel, illegal genetic experiments, where he's been turned--from an innocent little creature, where he has an Iq of three, and he becomes this thing that's completely alone; this gnarled little beast," said Gunn of the gun-toting raccoon, voiced by actor Bradley Cooper. He's pretty sad." Speaking on Groot, "All of the 'I am Groots' that were earlier voices didn't sound very good at all,...

With the first teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy now out and about, director James Gunn recently participated in a great, fast-paced Q&A with Kevin Pereira of Pointless podcast. While the full interview is being saved for next week, Pereira has shared five minutes of their chat, which reveals some intriguing nuggets. One of those nuggets is that while Marvel Studios has partial rights to the Skrulls, they do not own the Badoon, which is why we'll see the Sakaaran in the movie. Listen to the interview above and be warned it contains strong language. What do you think? Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan,...

The E.W. Scripps Company is mounting a challenge to primetime access stalwarts Jeopardy! and Wheel Of Fortune. The company has inked a deal with MGM Domestic Television Distribution to distribute its game show Let’s Ask America nationwide, targeting the 7-8 Pm access hour Monday-Friday. Let’s Ask America was a home grown show, launching on several Scripps stations last fall and expanding to all 13 Scripps markets this fall, airing from 7-7:30 Pm. Interestingly, it is MGM and not Warner Bros., whose syndication division Telepictures developed Let’s Ask America for Scripps, that is handling its nationwide expansion. Let’s Ask America was one of two new game show formats, along with The List, that Scripps picked to replace Jeopardy! and Wheel Of Fortune on its stations last year. It was happy with the results, especially in the demos, renewing and expanding both shows in the spring and starting to plot national distribution.

A fun video that we missed yesterday during all the Halloween festivities popped onto our radar today so if you're suffering from the post-holiday blues, why not spend a few minutes with "The Real Housewives of Horror"?
The video comes to us from Nerdist's YouTube Channel, and it follows five of the most murderous women in the country as they enjoy the gory and gruesome lifestyle that only horror can provide.
The cast is comprised of Brea Grant, Harley Morenstein, Briana Lane, Jessika Van, Brooke Seguin, Zack Pearlman, and Laura Ortiz. It's produced by Nerdist and Super Creative; executive produced by Kevin Pereira, Yaniv Fituci, and Ziv Haklili; line produced by Carrie LeGrand; directed by Sandeep Parikh; and written by Brea Grant.
With several calls in the video's comments section for this to become a full-fledged series, we could see more soon. In the meantime, enjoy!

Former Attack of the Show host Kevin Pereira has produced several web series through his production company, Super Creative, and the studio's latest effort has found a home on Machinima Prime. The YouTube Original Channel will release Player Vs. Pain, a video game competition that lies somewhere between Major League Gaming and Distraction. The premise of Player Vs. Pain is simple: top gamers, many of whom will be affiliated with the Machinima network, must compete in various video game challenges while being subjected to painful "tortures" as rewards for their virtual successes. For example, one episode will require Halo players to endure a paintball shot to the body for each in-game kill, while another will reward Tetris players by waxing some of their hair off for each line they clear. It's like a sick mix of typical Machinima fare and operant conditioning. Pereira's previous web efforts through Super Creative include...

Get ready for a lot of "Party Down" reruns and cooking shows as the rebranded network kills all video game-related programming for shows targeting "the modern male" according to The Hollywood Reporter.
After the defection/exit of Adam Sessler in April and Kevin Pereira in May of last year, and the September announcement that the network would try to attract the "sophisticated male" viewer, it seemed likely that cable's brief experiment with a channel dedicated to video games was coming to a close. It's not like we were expecting some kind of "G4 2.0" at this point, but it's nonetheless disappointing to have what THR's piece is effectively describing as Bravo for the obsessively-groomed male.

The network made it official today that production on the long-running shows is shutting down at the end of the year. Attack Of The Show and X-Play helped define G4‘s gamer-culture focus and launched careers for the likes of Olivia Munn and Chris Hardwick, amassing close to 3000 episodes to date. They also provided wall-to-wall coverage of Comic-Con and E3 — two events right in the network’s young-male demo wheelhouse. X-Play launched in 2003 on what was then known as TechTV; Attack followed in 2005. Here’s the network’s release about farewell plans for the shows, which will air original episodes through 2012: Los Angeles, CA, October 26, 2012 – Attack of the Show! and X-Play are the longest-running and defining series for G4 through its first decade. With the shows ending production at the end of 2012, G4 is getting set to showcase the landmark series as they wind down their long runs on the network.
