Sam Pollard, the Peabody winning director of “Mr. Soul!” and “Sammy Davis, Jr.: I Gotta Be Me,” has set another documentary feature called “The Sound of Philadelphia” about music icons Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell and the musical genre they helped proliferate, Philly Soul.
“The Sound of Philadelphia” is a documentary produced by Warner Music Entertainment, Warner Chappell Music and Imagine Documentaries in partnership with Jigsaw Productions. Alex Gibney is executive producing the film.

By the dawn of the Seventies, the protest song was considered as much a relic of the previous decade as the word “groovy,” with notable exceptions like Edwin Starr’s “War,” Neil Young’s “Ohio,” and Bob Dylan’s “George Jackson.” As Arlo Guthrie told Rolling Stone this summer, “The music business went from figuring out how they could make some money selling protest songs to realizing, ‘Well, they don’t really sell that well, so we’ll move on to something else.’ Which they did.”

Sugar Ray has never been known for deep, sad songs. So it’s fitting that their upcoming album Little Yachty — the band’s first collection of new songs in a decade — is packed with joyous tunes ready for a beach party. But when the group’s frontman Mark McGrath got on the phone with Rolling Stone to talk about his favorite tunes by other acts, he went for the dark, heavy stuff, songs that he says cause a “visceral reaction.”

When it comes to setting the tone in either movies or television, music is a vital tool.
Sometimes a character need not speak a word in order for the viewer to understand exactly what the mood is for the scene.
Whether the soundtrack is built from contemporary hits, classical instrumentals or simply a vibrant score, music coupled with a wrenching television scene burrows deep into the viewer's heart.
We all have a song (or three or five) that we have discovered from watching our favorite shows. Here are 17 of the best tracks we found from watching our most addictive shows.
1. Atlanta - Billy Paul "Am I Black Enough For You" This song could just as easily be the entire show's theme, but it's particularly on the nose for this episode. It’s an extended parody Justin Bieber that slyly lampoons his exploitation of black culture, while also poking fun at his music and antics.

Season 14 of “The Voice” begins its Top 12 live shows on Monday, April 23 when a dozen artists take to the stage and sing for America’s votes. Six-time champ Blake Shelton is coaching three of those hopefuls. Two of them — Pryor Baird and Kyla Jade— won the public vote. Shelton chose the third, Spensha Baker, from his four remaining contestants in the Top 24. That decision meant the elimination of Gary Edwards, Austin Giorgio and Wilkes.
We asked you which of these three artists that didn’t make the grade with Shelton was the most deserving to move on to the live shows. The overwhelming choice was Wilkes who garnered a whopping 82% of your votes. Giorgio netted 11% while Edwards managed just 7%.
If you haven’t voted in our poll yet, take read of the brief recap of each of these three artists and then cast your ballot as to which was the best.

Blake Shelton has been with the “The Voice” since it began in 2011 and has won six of the previous 13 seasons. He is the reigning champ, having coached Chloe Kohanksi to victory last fall. However, he may have a hard time winning for a lucky seventh time in season 14 with the return of Alicia Keys and the addition of Kelly Clarkson to the coaching panel. Our readers say that both those women have stronger teams heading into the live round, which kicks off April 16 with all artists in the Top 24 performing.
As with the other three coaches, Shelton had to cut his team of eight down to five during the knockout round that just ended. In addition, he added one more artists to his team when their original coach went with another singer in their knockout.

Attitudes have changed since Anne Bancroft’s predatory seduction of hapless Dustin Hoffman, but this rereleased classic remains a hugely pleasurable experience
If ever a movie captured the audience’s imagination with its musical soundtrack, it was The Graduate, that irresistibly watchable 1967 classic, now rereleased in cinemas, starring Anne Bancroft as the sexy and jaded fortysomething Mrs Robinson, who seduces 21-year-old Ben, played by the young Dustin Hoffman – that muddled young man whose sentimental education begins only after he graduates college.
Simon and Garfunkel’s eerie and sublime The Sound of Silence perfectly captures both Ben’s alienation and bewilderment about what he should do with his life, and then his postcoital disenchantment and self-loathing. And Here’s to You Mrs Robinson, with its gentle reassurance that Jesus loves her, provides a note of final gentleness and forgiveness for this character that is really nowhere in the script. First audition of the night was Delvin Choice, 24, the Starbucks barista who auditioned last year and failed to get a chair to turn around. In the pre-audition reel, Delvin said he spent his year focusing on his work and singing with his father in church. After years as a multihyphenate creator of a raft of documentaries (one of which is titled, wonderfully, Fuck You, Fuck You Very Much [1998]), Sweden’s Göran Hugo Olsson has recently come to greater prominence. His documentary on soul singer Billy Paul, Am I Black Enough For You, secured international distribution in 2009, while 2011’s vibrant archive collage The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 took him to another level. Olsson’s new film, like its predecessor, screens in the Panorama Documentary strand of the Berlinale. Concerning Violence is based on Frantz Fanon’s famous 1961 book, The Wretched of the Earth, and focuses, in nine discrete chapters, […]...

The "Duets" performance finale kicks off with a performance of "Get Ready" from the stars. John Legend and Kelly Clarkson are much better on this song than the other two -- we wish just the two of them had performed it. Also, Kelly looks super hot in her dress. And Robin Thicke needs to stop wriggling his crotch at us. Stop that, Robin.
Tonight each amateur is performing a duet and also a solo, which seems kind of silly since the show's hook is "duets." Unnecessary filler, if you ask us. This episode should be 30 minutes long.
But first we must send somebody home. Bridget and John are in the Bottom 2 and Bridget goes home, which is not surprising. It's hard for girls on these public-voted-on shows nowadays. We would've actually swapped Bridget for Jason if you look at body of work, but all the men left are pretty solid.

Did the right singer get the first boot? Vote now! With just three weeks until the live episodes begin, the first amateur was eliminated on the June 7 episode of ABC's Duets. Following the night's performances, Kelly Clarkson's singer Jason Farol and Robin Thicke's singer Alexis Foster landed in the bottom two and were forced into the season's first "solo showdown" ... for their lives! Jason belted out a chilling rendition of Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones," while Alexis took a chance with Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman." In the end, Alexis had the lowest score, and was the first contestant sent packing. What do You think? Did Alexis deserve to be sent home tonight? Cast your vote below, then hit up the comments section with your thoughts on the rest of the Duets contestants! [polldaddy poll=6296512] — Andy Swift Follow @AndySwift...

The Black Power Mixtape: 1967-1975 is a fine example of a documentary that blends the past and present, using the visual medium of film as a “mixtape” to collect images of the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s while being entirely narrated from new and archived interviews with activists such as Angela Davis, Stokely Carmichael, and Kathleen Cleaver, and musicians such as Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, and Questlove. The film’s footage was filmed by Swedish filmmakers who made documentary segments for Swedish television of the black power movement, and chronicling how a cycle of poverty, structural racism, and the need for equality using intellectual thought was pertinent during these years. These issues were spearheaded by the Black Panthers who, contrary to popular belief, were not advocating for violence but for education and reform in the black community. The film was directed by Göran Hugo Olsson, who had...

From Paris With Love (Blu-Ray)Lionsgate Home Entertainment2010/Rated R/93 minsList Price $39.99 – Available June 8, 2010What is it with John Travolta and action movies? The actor who has enjoyed a career full of second and third comings has never been able to find the right vehicle within the genre. John Woo's 1997 Face/Off was a fluke because the picture turned out to be an interesting hybrid of brutal action and emotional drama. Travolta is an excellent dramatic actor and has shown some nearly flawless timing in comedic ventures, yet when he attempts to combine the two, he looks rather silly. Face/Off was the exception because Travolta was in fact playing two characters: determined and emotionally scarred FBI agent Sean Archer and the psychotic killer who destroys his life and steals his face Castor Troy. As action packed as that film was it was the psychological duel between Travolta and...

The songwriting/production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff has been the musical force behind over 3500 songs in 35 years, rivaling catalogs by Lennon and McCartney, and even Bacharach and David. Their Philly International label focused on "The Sound Of Philadelphia," was distributed by Clive Davis' Columbia Records group in the seventies, and gave the latter company its most successful R&B chart hits. Almost immediately after signing with the company, Gamble and Huff's combined talents steered the likes of The O'Jays, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Billy Paul, Mfsb, and the Three Degrees into both R&B and Pop's Top Ten with songs such as "Love Train," "Me And Mrs. Jones," "Back Stabbers" and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" becoming as timeless as any single can be. The pair has received many prestigious awards, but none...

Mark Kermode enjoys a Billy Paul biopic, a faux-biopic of mountain-dancing madman Jesco White, two David Lynch collections and a celebration of Derek Jarman
Over the past few years, several music documentaries that would previously have been confined to TV have taken a brief theatrical bow before appearing on DVD. This year's standout was Am I Black Enough for You (pictured, 2009, Drakes Avenue, E) the story of Philadelphia soul legend Billy Paul. Having achieved mainstream success with "Me and Mrs Jones", Paul horrified his "cross-over" fans with the radical broadside that gives this DVD its name, which promptly relegated him to outsider status. Years later, artists such as Schoolly D (who features here) helped to reclaim him as a lost icon of black power, although the bittersweet battle between principle and opportunity is left unresolved in this engrossing portrait.

Is it me, or has this year seen a relative barrage of music documentaries featuring legendary black music makers from the 60s/70s? Am I Black Enough For You? (Billy Paul), Still Bill (Bill Withers), Soul Power (Various artists including James Brown)… Well, now here come two more, both set for release early next year and both about P-Funk maestro, Sly Stone of Everyday People and Family Affair fame.
And, if that isn’t enough, you can get even higher with Sly with the announcement today that he’s signed a deal with Cleopatra Records to release a new album early next year too! Not bad for a sexagenarian with a very sex, drugs and rock n roll history!
Back to the documentary films, in alphabetical order, we have Coming Back For More and Higher: The Story of Sly Stone.

Miami — Recording artists have the Cool & Dre guarantee when journeying to Miami to visit their Lake Oasis facility.
"Everything is happening," Cool said. "People leave the studio with a smile on their face."
Not only are you going to get some hot beats, but you'll enjoy all of the amenities the Miami duo are building right now. They call it a studio, but Lake Oasis is more of a combination of a recording lair/ hangout spot/ home/ aquatic fun house.
"We do a lot of cooking because Cool is a chef," said Dre, standing next to his partner of the better part of the last two decades. "When we decided to take a studio, we wanted it to be real unique. So we got Lake Oasis — it's on 1.5 acres.

The masters of '70s R&B on what has been called a "creative rampage."
By Phil Gallo
Songwriters, producers and entrepreneurs Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff set a message of love and togetherness to lushly orchestrated ballads and dance tunes to create the Philly Soul sound of the 1970s. Their Philadelphia International Records grabbed the baton from Motown and Stax in 1971 and quickly commandeering the pop and R&B charts with records by the O’Jays, the Spinners, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Jerry Butler, Lou Rawls and Billy Paul.

NEW YORK -- Sony BMG Music Entertainment has licensed the complete catalog of music from Philadelphia International Records, the label founded by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff in 1971, Billboard has learned. This marks the first time that the entire PIR catalog -- which includes hits by Patti LaBelle, the O'Jays, MFSB, Billy Paul and others -- is under one roof.
Under the terms of the multiyear arrangement, Sony BMG Music Entertainment's Commercial Music Group and Legacy Recordings will issue physical and digital recordings of PIR material. The deal also extends to ringtones (another PIR first), PDA applications, synch licenses and branded entertainment.
The partnership launches in October with two double-disc compilations: "The Essential Lou Rawls" and "The Essential Teddy Pendergrass." Additionally, 50 digital releases (original albums and collections) will be ready for download by year's end.
Some previously unreleased recordings, including a live set from LaBelle and a Phyllis Hyman album, also will make their commercial debuts.
