113 days into the Writers Guild of America strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, there appeared to be a glimmer of hope. The AMPTP had at long last reached out to the WGA's negotiating committee with a new counteroffer that would hopefully bring both sides closer together, and, thus, hasten an end to a work stoppage that mushroomed on July 14 to include the Screen Actors Guild -- American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Both sides met on Tuesday evening, and, well, the meeting went poorly.
AMPTP president Carol Lombardini was joined by Warner Bros. Discovery's David Zaslav, Disney's Bob Iger, Universal's Donna Langley and Netflix's Ted Sarandos, but, rather than negotiate, the quintet launched into a lecture about the quality of their counteroffer -- which was their first and, evidently, final counteroffer. When the WGA negotiators pushed back on the counteroffer's numerous "limitations and loopholes,...

A day after Walt Disney Studios was bustling with thousands of union members for the National Day of Solidarity, the mood Wednesday was more subdued at the Burbank lot as writers voiced their frustrations with the latest offer from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
“I think we’re going in the right direction, but I think that there’s still a lot of ground that needs to be covered,” Writers Guild of America board member Dailyn Rodriguez told The Hollywood Reporter in front of Disney on Wednesday. “I can see loopholes all over the proposal, and our membership sees that as well.”
The AMPTP on Tuesday night released details of its Aug. 11 offer to the WGA that included percentage increases in salary, span protections and some guardrails on the use of generative artificial intelligence. But it was the notion that the AMPTP put out the details of...

It is a miracle that Dan Harmon's groundbreaking sitcom "Community" lasted more than a half-season on NBC. The series about seven misfits who form a study group at the fictional Greendale Community College was aggressively dense in its world-building and proudly esoteric in its references. How esoteric? In only its second season, the show turned what was set up as a "Pulp Fiction" homage into an invigoratingly cerebral riff on "My Dinner with Andre" provoked by a character's extra work on Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel's "Cougar Town." Not so shockingly, "Community" ranked a dire 138 in the Nielsen ratings that year.
Harmon and a crack staff of writers that included Megan Ganz, Dino Stamatopoulos, Liz Cackowski, Chris McKenna, and Andy Bobrow shredded the outside of the envelope of what was acceptable on a network sitcom. It made "Seinfeld" look like "Full House." Critics and a cult following kept...

On Feb. 7, 2013, after delays and significant drama behind the scenes, Community debuted “History 101,” the first episode of the long-awaited fourth season, and the first under new showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port. Fan reaction to the outing was mixed, to put it mildly, while critics were downright savage. Soon enough, cast and crew began to express their misgivings, too. The entire season was later written off in-universe as the result of a gas leak, never to be spoken of again.
Was that a fair assessment, though? Countless other “bad” installments of pop culture have been revisited over the years, only for perceived faults to be found not quite so damning as audiences initially thought. With an entire decade of hindsight and objectivity to reflect upon, was the fourth season of Community really that bad?
Kind of, yeah!

The current second season of Fox’s Bless the Harts will be its last.
Fox has confirmed that the comedy will finish out its current season in May and will not return to the schedule.
Bless the Harts was the first of the new wave of animated series on Fox as the network, fresh from its break from Disney, doubled down on the genre. It also marks the first of this new crop of show, which also includes The Great North and Duncanville, as well as upcoming series Housebroken, to come to an end.
While the network was happy with the show creatively, it never gained traction in the ratings, which averaged at a 0.5 live-plus-seven in adults 18-49 with 1.4M total viewers and 2M multi-platform viewers.
It will be replaced like-for-like with another animated series in Fox’s Animation Domination Sunday night block next season. Fox has Housebroken, featuring the voices of Lisa Kudrow,...

This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Saturday, July 25. The highlights are below.
The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.
The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22, Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24 — is being announced daily through Sunday.
Saturday’s events include (all times are Pacific Daylight):
10–11 a.m.
“Cosmos: Possible Worlds” — featuring the host and creators of the Fox docu-series, including host Neil deGrasse Tyson, visual effects supervisor Jeffrey A. Okun, executive producer and director Ann Druyan,...

Fox has ordered a second season of its new half-hour animated comedy series Bless the Harts for premiere during the 2020-21 season. It marks the second freshman Fox series to get a pickup, following breakout new drama Prodigal Son, which got a full-season order with nine additional episodes.
Because of the nature of animated series, which need a long lead time, a back order for Bless the Harts was not an option, leaving renewal as the only pickup scenario.

WGA members Phyllis Nagy and Andy Bobrow have raised more than $29,000 in a GoFundMe campaign to help their fellow writers “who have lost their health insurance during our current contract dispute.”

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

As I watched it, Frances Bodomo's "Afronauts" short film (soon to be a feature) immediately came to mind, although different stories (alternative histories of the "space race"), a continent apart, but both of the Diaspora. The fellow who put this together - Andy Bobrow - is a writer and producer on the TV comedy series "Community." Bobrow's shared the following on the film's making: "It’s a short film I made in 2003. I had the title first. It made me laugh. Then I made the movie, slowly. I figured if it sucked I wouldn’t show it to anyone. It did not suck, so here it is. A review of tonight's "Community" coming up just as soon as I detonate a mollusk... I don't know if the creative team specifically wanted the first Donald Glover-less episode to be loaded with guest stars so we'd be less likely to dwell on Troy's absence — I was so pleased to have Professor Duncan on the committee, for instance, that I didn't even notice at first that Chang took Troy's chair at the table — or if the scheduling simply worked out that way, given that several of the guests have day jobs on other shows. (Though Andy Bobrow at least...

Community makes its triumphant return this week for its fifth season (and given NBC’s current comedy slate, we may actually get a sixth- who would’ve predicted that four years ago?). After the uneven, Dan Harmon-less fourth season, fans are understandably excited for not just the show to be back, but the creator as well. “Repilot” addresses this, referencing a “gas leak” year, but it quickly moves on, more concerned with justifying how the gang will get back together. "Losin’ It," which counts Will Gluck and Darlene Hunt among its executive producers, is a workplace comedy inspired by Dawson's real life experiences as someone who formerly was overweight.
The Big C’s Darlene Hunt is teaming with YouTube star Shane Dawson for a weight loss comedy.
The pair sold a workplace comedy project titled Losin’ It to NBC. The single-camera half-hour, which is inspired by Dawson’s real life experiences as someone who formerly is overweight, is set at a suburban Weight Loss Center franchise that gets thrown into upheaval when its most successful client decides to share his inspiration by becoming a consultant there – only to then find himself promoted to manager by the end of his first day.

Back in June, My Damn Channel successfully completed its first Kickstarter project by raising $20,000 for Love Me Cat, a puppet talk show. Two months later, the first episode has arrived, with guest Andy Richter doing his best to keep up with his wisecracking companions. Love Me Cat, created by writers Eric Kaplan (Big Bang Theory) and Andy Bobrow (Community), is best described as a mix between late night network TV and Mystery Science Theater 3000. The driving force of the show is the natural, witty banter between the hosts and guests; it just so happens that all of the hosts are strange-looking puppets. In addition to the titular feline, the cast includes Owly, a hapless owl; Bronzo, a pit musician in the vein of Paul Schaefer; and Sheepy, an obnoxious sheep who serves as the show's lone audience member. In the first episode, these four characters crack some jokes at Richter's expense,...

In an early buy, Fox has put in for development On The Farm, from The Big C creator/executive producer Darlene Hunt and Community co-executive producer Andy Bobrow. The single-camera comedy hails from Sony Pictures TV where Hunt and Bobrow are under overall deals. Written by Hunt and Bobrow, On The Farm is a “family-out-of-water” story about a New York dermatologist who moves his family to a farm in rural Kentucky in order to live a simpler life. Hunt and Bobrow recently worked together on Sony TV’s NBC comedy series Save Me, on which Hunt served as showrunner and Bobrow consulted. This marks Bobrow’s return to Fox where his comedy script Iceland went to pilot in 2011. Hunt, who as an actress recurs on Parks & Recreation, is with UTA, Mosaic and Joel McKuin; Bobrow is with UTA and attorney Ken Richman.

"Community" is coming back for a fifth season -- seriously! -- and along for the ride once again is series creator Dan Harmon.
The writer and producer left the series after Season 3 and was replaced by David Guarascio and Moses Port for Season 4. Harmon recently spoke out about the season of "Community" that happened without him. When he finally watched it, he said, "It is very much like an impression, and an unflattering one" and "Man, watching those characters without me there is just not f---in' cool, man."
Jim Rash, Dean Pelton to "Community" fans, said they "did all we can do, and we did our best."
"I thought the cast and the writers did a great job taking over a difficult task," Rash told Vulture. "And despite that some episodes were probably tonally different, I think they fit in. And we had Megan Ganz, we had Andy Bobrow, great...

“Intro to Knots” is a particularly frustrating episode of Community. It’s bookended by two less than stellar acts, but the middle part is some of most suspenseful, entertaining moments the show has ever done. The episode kicks things off with a nod a to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope by filming the first few minutes of the teaser in one long shot, giving the illusion the episode will play out in real time. That’s a fun device to use, especially given the nature of the second-half, but the gimmick is dropped before we even get to the credits and for the rest of the time we just have to assume everything is still real time for the sake of the plot. Writer Andy Bobrow spoke out on Twitter on why this was the case; there just wasn’t enough production time to do the entire episode in one take,...

Community, Season 4, Episode 10: “Intro to Knots”
Written by Andy Bobrow
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Let’s talk for a second about Abed Nadir. In a lot of ways, he seems emblematic of the problems that have hamstrung Community’s fourth season. As soon as he arrives at Jeff’s Christmas party, he is actively trying to mold it into a Die Hard homage. This isn’t unprecedented behavior for Abed, he shaped what is perhaps the series’ best episode “Critical Film Studies” into a My Dinner With Andrew homage, but recently it seems to be his sole motivating concern week in and week out. It feels like a shift in his character. If we take a look at “Cooperative Calligraphy,” an episode “Intro to Knots” closely resembles. Abed constantly comments “It’s a bottle episode!” but he is not attempting to propagate it.

When you want to know something about a TV show, ask the writers. They know everything. This was certainly the case on Saturday (Feb. 9) when five "Community" writers spoke a CommuniCon, a fan convention for the program.
Chris McKenna, Megan Ganz, Andy Bobrow, Steve Basilone and Tim Saccardo had plenty to share on what's coming in Season 4, the show's issues with former star Chevy Chase, and even on "Community" ideas so bizarre they never got made.
Here are some of the highlights:
Whatever you may think of "Community" as it goes into Season 4 without creator Dan Harmon at the helm, the writers have been very, very worried about it. "We're breaking the show" was apparently the feeling in the writers room before every script.
Seriously, they're worried about fan reactions. "Before you watch Season 4, watch all of your least-favorite episodes of Season 3," Megan Ganz advised.

Community, Season 4, Episode 1: “History 101”
Written by Andy Bobrow
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Early on in “History 101,” it becomes readily apparent that Community is no longer the show Dan Harmon oversaw for three years. If we’re going to appreciate this new version of Community, we’re going to have to appreciate it on its own terms. And while a single episode is almost certainly too small a sample size to make sweeping generalizations about the season to come, it appears to be a much simpler and traditional sitcom, one that perversely seems to justify many of the criticisms unfairly leveled at the first three seasons of the show—that Community is a show trading in empty pop-culture references devoid of any recognizable human emotion.

Can sitcoms have moxie? If they can, then Community, which is always teetering on the edge of cancelation, definitely has it. On the road to its fourth season premiere, everyone involved with the show has been forced to deal with a maelstrom of crap: low viewer turn outs; a public spat between creator Dan Harmon and sexagenarian prat-faller Chevy Chase; the subsequent ousting of Harmon by NBC; and the delay of this season’s debut, which demonstrated NBC’s general ambivalence about the show’s future. Other sitcoms have been squashed by a lot less but Community is “the little cult hit that could.” The majority of the cast, crew, and fans soldier on and will continue to do so for at least a little while longer. As the fourth season begins, the show’s irreverent, self-referential humor appears unaltered by all of the behind-the-scenes upheaval. Yeah, that’s right, Harmon...

During an appearance this week on Alec Baldwin’s Here’s The Thing podcast, the Golden Globe-winning writer/actress revealed that production on Season 3 of the comedy is “starting at the end of March. I’m so excited.”
Even better, Baldwin may have used Dunham’s pick-up news to land his first post-30 Rock gig. “I’ll come and play your therapist,” he offered, to which she replied: “That would be the most fun thing in the world.”
Jack Donaghy, a shrink? We likey.

This Week in Ladybits
Hang on to your foundation garments: We have some actual good news for ladybits this week.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court struck down two very anti-ladybits state laws as unconstitutional. So no forcing women to get ultrasounds, and no restricting the use of medications to end a pregnancy. Thanks for not being horrible, Oklahoma justices.
Which is not to say that there wasn’t some suckola news as well.
For example, Mississippi’s Governor Phil Bryant, who’s all about the abstinence-only sex education, blames Mississippi teens for “not caring enough” about using birth control. Not that they’re whiffing on birth control because they’re massively underinformed about it or anything. Yeah, it’s probably that not caring thing.
Just in case you need to rage up for a couch-throwing contest or something, Salon and AlterNet summed up 5 States...
