I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Sony’s Whitney Houston biopic starring English actress Naomi Ackie that comes out Dec. 23, takes its title from “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” the lead single off Houston’s second album, 1987’s Whitney.
The track was written by then-married songwriting duo George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, aka Boy Meets Girl, who’d penned Houston’s first hit single, 1985’s “How Will I Know.” Some critics dismissed “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” as too similar in sound to “How Will I Know” — but fans knew an earworm when they heard one. The song took six weeks to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, stayed there two weeks, and remained in the top 10 for nine weeks — more than any other song that year.

As the lyrics to “Summer Nights” suggest, the first big group number from Grease: Live felt like it happened so fast — and, yes, we had us a blast.
Stars Aaron Tveit and Julianne Hough, backed by their inquisitive castmates, crooned Danny and Sandy’s classic tale of awkward romance: Boy meets girl on vacation, girl ends up going to the same school, boy freaks out. (For the record, this whole ‘Surprise! We go to the same school!’ concept would never happen in our post-Facebook society.)

It astounds me that so many critics can vehemently spit venom at Kevin Smith, proclaiming he only makes movies for himself, yet that same scrutiny seems to avoid a borderline selfish filmmaker like Marlon Wayans. Given the right script and role, Wayans is a funny, talented performer. That I won’t argue. Yet these flavor-of-the-week spoofs he constantly churns out sport the same, unfunny, low-brow sense of humor every single time. These are jokes that make Wayans and his writing buddy Rick Alvarez laugh like pre-pubescent boys – or maybe the jokes were written by pre-pubescent boys, and they just make Wayans and Alvarez laugh. Either way, Fifty Shades Of Black is fifty despicable shades too many. Shocker, right?
Wayans stars as Christian Black, a wealthy “bidness” man who made his money like any other successful entrepreneur – by learning the coke trade and sucking a few dicks! (Yup, strap in.) It...

BBC Two launched a new comedy double-bill tonight, with Danny Baker's '70s-set Cradle To Grave giving way to the thoroughly modern Boy Meets Girl.
Written by Simon Carlyle, Elliot Kerrigan and Andrew Mettam, Boy Meets Girl is the first British sitcom to feature a transgender character - played by a transgender actor - in the lead.
The six-part series charts the romance between Judy (Rebecca Root) and Leo (Harry Hepple) - and the difficulties they come up against as others come to terms with their relationship.
Kristian Smith - BBC Commissioning Editor - described the show as a "heart-warming romantic comedy" that also promotes "affirming messages of humanity and acceptance."
Digital Spy wants to know what you thought of Boy Meets Girl - was the show a breath of fresh air? Did you fall head over heels for Judy and Leo?

Mulignans is a play on the Italian-American slang for a black man, which is based on the Italian word for “eggplant.” This comedic film reverses roles, and puts African-Americans in the role of Italian Gangsters, much like any mob movie that you’ve ever seen. Not only is this film funny, but it’s also a big of an eye opener, with caucasian hipsters being the underdogs. 5 stars

Penny Dreadful‘s redeeming qualities are its sense of shlocky fun and its partially incredible cast. Its weaknesses are its lousy pacing, its uncertain characterization of several core cast members, and its pursuit of tasteless thrills disguised as, to quote creator John Logan, “pushing the boundaries.” When the show finds the balance between spectacle and humanity it can overcome its flaws and attain actual power, but more often, as it did this week, it flubs the landing.

Tis I, Jason from Mnpp, here, with another week's new edition of our "Beauty vs Beast" series. So over the next several days The Film Experience is going to be diving into the cinematic realm of Artificial Intelligence (known as "A.I." to people in a hurry and Haley Joel Osment fans), and to get the ball rolling I figured we'd make ourselves like science-fiction and hop in the way-back machine to the year 1927, when a little chap who went by the name Friedrich Christian Anton Lang, known to his friends as Fritz, made a little movie called Metropolis. In case you don't know the story, it goes like this: Boy meets Girl, Girl Gets Clones Into Evil Robot, Dystopian Nightmare Explodes, and a Kiss, The End. Somewhere in there dancing happens, and it is crazy awesome.
But thanks to a ferocious performance from actress Brigitte Helm you really couldn't get...

The suspense and pleasure of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's talking-and-tentacles horror romance Spring lies in discovering what shape the film is going to take. The story of a handsome American ne'er-do-much (Lou Taylor Pucci) who jaunts off to Bologna after losing his job as a bar cook, Spring blossoms slowly: Boy meets girl, girl mentions that her medication means she has to shield her skin from the sunlight, boy starts spotting dead animals and albino snakes among the picturesque ruins. At first, the film feels like a scruffy, foul-mouthed horror-comedy, one eager to showcase its starlets' breasts and its FX team's bloody grossouts. But as the American comes closer to discovering his new lover's secrets — she's played by Nadia Hilker as a pa...

2 stars (out of 4) Boy meets girl. Boy likes girl. Boy asks girl to be his sexual submissive. That kinky love story sparked a best-selling phenomenon — but its adaptation is a limp bore. In no order, here are 50 reasons why: 1. First off, I get it. This flick isn’t intended to be a polished work of high art — you just want an escapist night out. But it’s not fun enough to be enjoyed over popcorn or emotionally charged enough to be taken seriously. It’s [...]...

The weekend is chalk full of new Specialty releases, though most will likely be low performers in terms of dollars at the box office. Entertainment One is opening Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen starrer Outcast with limited runs and will likely find tepid returns at the theatrical box office, though it may shine in the digital/on-demand space where it will also bow this weekend. Documentary Ballet 422 (Magnolia Pictures), meanwhile, has had solid buzz heading into the weekend and should score well in its niche market. Monterey Media is hoping to have traction with stars Wes Bentley, Vincent Piazza and Amber Tamblyn as it opens 3 Nights In The Desert in theaters and on-demand, while Freestyle Releasing is targeting the rom-com crowd for its debut, One Small Hitch. Other Specialty openers this weekend include First Run Features’ doc The Other Man: F.W. de Klerk And The End Of Apartheid In South Africa,...

John Wick
Written by Derek Kolstad
Directed by David Leitch & Chad Stahelski
China/Canada/USA, 2014
John Wick is a beautiful ballet of death and destruction. It combines the brutal hand-to-hand combat of Jason Bourne with Ridley Scott’s visual sensibilities to create the perfect vehicle for Keanu Reeves. Here, Reeves struts his physicality and underrated comic timing to ratchet up the fun while he amasses a huge body count. It’s an ultra-slick, violence-worshipping extravaganza that will have you eating from the palm of its bloodstained hand.
John Wick tells a story as ancient as time itself…
Boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. Girl gets terminal illness. Girl leaves boy a dog to help him grieve. Russian mafia kills dog. Boy goes on murderous quest for vengeance.
Ah, the classics.
Of course, this merely serves as the framework that allows Keanu Reeves to kick all manner of butt in a...

Matthew McConaughey has defended the romantic comedy genre.
The True Detective star said that criticism of rom-coms is "completely unfair".
"These things aren't easy," he told GQ. "What's hard is to make them look easy.
"Those kinds of movies are what they are. They get pooh-poohed by critics. They get pooh-poohed by actors themselves. And in a way I get it, but in other ways it's completely unfair.
"There's a buoyancy you need to make them work. I believe I gave them buoyancy. And some of the shoots were very difficult, with me trying to fight for the balls on the guy."
He continued: "What's a romantic comedy? Boy meets girl. They get together. Something happens. Girl takes off. Boy chases girl. They get back together. The end.
"A lot of times the male is somewhat emasculated, meaning he has to crawl back and say, 'I'm nothing without you. If you don't take me back,...

Comparing a film adaptation to its novel source material is like comparing apples and oranges; the two are so completely different in the way they tell stories and convey ideas, either through visuals or through text, that it’s pointless to say one is better.
In the case of the upcoming Gone Girl however, the film adaptation of which premieres this week at the New York Film Festival, the book is such a meticulously crafted, Hitchcock-grade level of psychological thriller nuance, that carelessness with the adaptation could be more than just a let down for fans of the novel.
Gone Girl doesn’t necessarily earn the “unfilmable novel” label that Lord of the Rings, Life of Pi or several other classics once did, but given its structure, its themes and its presentation of ideas, a lot has to be taken into consideration.
David Fincher can make any movie he damn well pleases,...

The re-launched Hollywood Film Festival (Hff), now under the auspices of Slamdance co-founder Jon Fitzgerald’s philanthropic CineCause, will run from October 16-19.
CineCause acquired Hff earlier this year after Fitzgerald served as executive director in 2013.
According to a press release the goal of the event going forward will be to showcase socially-conscious films and grow into a leading festival “without the help of typical glitz and glamour”, celebrating creative artists, activists and industry leaders who support causes around the world.
“The word Hollywood is synonymous with celebrity and glamour,” said Fitzgerald. “But Hollywood is filled with people who care about global problems and who recognise the power of celebrity, cinema and storytelling and how this power can help create change.”
“Many of Hollywood’s celebrities back important causes and several will participate in our festival this year. Sharon Stone produced My Name Is Water. Emma Thompson executive produced and narrates Sold [pictured], which stars Gillian Anderson and David Arquette...

BBC Two has ordered the UK's first transgender sitcom among its new commissions.
Boy Meets Girl was discovered at the 2013 BBC Trans Comedy Award, which searched for projects that offered a positive portrayal of transgender characters.
Created and written by Elliott Kerrigan and Simon Carlyle, the Manchester-based comedy focuses on newly-unemployed Leo, who finds himself attracted to Judy after bumping into her. Despite the age gap and his mother's protestations, the pair soon begin a relationship.
Casting and broadcast dates for the six-part series will be confirmed at a later time.
Meanwhile, Great British Bake Off co-host Sue Perkins is to front a new travel series titled The Mekong River, in which she journeys to South East Asia to find a river that brings life to millions of people from Vietnam to the Tibetan mountains.
The four-part series will follow Perkins as she travels to Mekong's source in the Himalayan glacier.

Jay-z and Beyonce didn't acknowledge their relationship for years, this despite the fact that everyone already knew they were together. Fortunately, hip-hop's royal couple have become increasingly comfortable playing characters in each others' creative endeavors.
Jay-z appears in Beyonce's self-made documentary and gets an awkward shoutout on "Bow Down" ("Don't think I'm just his little wife"), and now Jay's returning the favor by dropping Bey bombs all over "Magna Carta Holy Grail," the album he released Tuesday.
Ahead, glance at every Beyonce reference on the album. The man's got his wife on his mind, from using Beyonce as a sign of success akin to a car ("My past ain't pretty, my lady is, my Mercedes is"), to hinting at an, um, exciting sex life ("I want a wife that f-k me like a prostitute"), to sniping back at Lil Wayne's threats ("wanna kidnap wifey / good luck with that,...

On a chilly rainy evening on Tuesday, February 26, at the French Institute Alliance Française in New York City as part of their series When Boy Meets Girl: The Cinema of Léos Carax, the filmmaker's first Us retrospective, Carax came for a Q&A with Richard Brody, film critic for The New Yorker. Following a screening of Holy Motors, the two men conversed on stage, dressed in coats of brown and grey, sunglasses and beard covering the top and bottom half of their respective faces respectively, resembling Samuel Beckett characters not waiting for Godot.
Brody almost started with the beginning.
Richard Brody: You had written as a critic for a little while at Cahiers Du Cinéma?
Léos Carax: A very little while. I was not a critic. I wrote a few things, but it was not my thing.
Rb: Were you a cinephile growing up, watching lots and lots of movies?...

Simon Rich, the second youngest writer ever on the Saturday Night Live writing staff, is a busy guy. At least, he seems like it when you take into account that while he was finishing up at Harvard he had a two year book contract, followed by contributions to The New Yorker, his SNL gig, three more books (two of which are novels) and now a job on Pixar’s writing staff. And yet, for a man that consistently busy, he manages to write crisp and clear comedy that evokes a young Woody Allen. (Which is an opinion that others have gone on record with as well.) His Allen-esque prowess has especially been showcased in his latest short story collection, The Last Girlfriend On Earth.

Looking back at 2012 on what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2012—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2012 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were asked to write a paragraph explaining their 2012 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Christopher Maloney has left the X Factor hotel without permission and travelled to Liverpool. On Friday (October 26), the contestant missed a masterclass with Robbie Williams after he fled the premises and caught a train back to his home town. According to The Sun, the wildcard entry slipped out of the London hotel where he was staying with fellow acts on Thursday (October 25). He made his way to Euston before catching a train back to Liverpool, where he was said to be visiting his grandmother. The singer was reportedly feeling the pressure after being heavily criticised for his "cheesy" rendition of Boy Meets Girl's 'Waiting for a Star to Fall' on last week's show. Sources told the paper that Maloney - who consequently will not feature in footage of the session with Williams - had been trying to shrug off negative attention at a Halloween (more)...

That's your standard love triangle and while real-life three-pronged love affairs can get messy and often involve hurt feelings and at least one person who ends up out of the equation entirely, Hollywood versions provide safe alternatives where audiences can indulge in the notion of two battling suitors. From grandiose romantic takes to hilarious ones and realistic versions of the love tug-o-war, the big screen offers a smattering of potential outcomes.
The latest offering pits full-lipped heartthrob Tom Hardy against Star Trek hunk Chris Pine for the undivided affections of Reese Witherspoon in This Means War and got us thinking about what other films offered solid looks at love battles.

Los Angeles -- Whitney Houston's career is getting a post-mortem boost, but it isn't likely to be as big as the one that enriched the King of Pop's estate after his death.
Like the late Michael Jackson, Houston was in the midst of an attempted career revival. She was found dead at age 48 on Saturday in her Los Angeles hotel room on the eve of the Grammys, a stage she once ruled.
It could be weeks before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests that could establish the cause of death.
In an outpouring of grief – and a desire to remember her soaring voice and upbeat personality – Houston's fans have propelled her decades-old recordings to the top of sales charts on iTunes and Amazon.com. Twitter recorded more than 2.5 million Tweets about her within two hours of her death.

The busy pair drove to Maine, but had to rush back for her first fashion show appearance!
Bachelorette Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum sure did have one busy weekend. They were all over the map! They started off the weekend by looking at apartments in NYC and then traveled to Maine — Ashley’s home state — and even after car trouble, made it back to NYC in time for Ashley to walk the runway at Style360′s Boy Meets Girl fashion show on Sept. 11.
“Just looked at our first apartment… Loved it!” Ashley anxiously tweeted on Sept. 9. “Can we get the first place we see!!??”
From the looks of it, Ashley and J.P. will enjoy looking out their window if they decide to roll with the first pad they viewed. “This could be our view!!! Not bad. :))” Ashley shared, along with a pic of the view.

J.P. doesn’t like waking up early, but thankfully Ashley is by his side to make his a.m. routines easier!
Isn’t it like most men to wake up grumpy in the mornings and start complaining right off the bat? Well lucky for J.P. Rosenbaum that he has a very sweet fiancee to help him through his tough morning routines. Bachelorette Ashley Hebert loves J.P. so much that she even gets up early to move his car!
“Does NYC have to sweep the streets at 7:30am Every day on my block?!? J.P. complained on Twitter Sept. 8.
And it seems that he was making a mess out of the morning, but at least J.P. could blame it on his a.m. caffeine jolt. “@WilliamFHolman too much coffee I guess” he shared with his former Bachelorette castmate and buddy William Holman.
