Recent hot cinema topics such as the portrayal of the Mandarin character in Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 and speculations about what classic Star Trek villain Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in J.J Abrams’ Star Trek: Into Darkness was modeled after leading up to the film’s release, among others, underline the importance of great villains in genre cinema.
Creating a great cinematic villain is a difficult goal that makes for an incredibly rewarding and memorable viewer experience when it is achieved.
We’ll now take a look at the greatest film villains. Other writing on this subject tends to be a bit unfocused, as “greatest villain” articles tend to mix live-action human villains with animated characters and even animals. [Editor's note: If anyone says 2010 was a sh!% year for movies, please refer them to this post.]
Instead of the usual "best" or "worst" films of the year lists, I thought a good way to take a look at the highs and lows of the 2010 film year would be to compile almost every single review we published in 2010 and let readers meander through the wasteland as it were.
I'm really amazed at the range of films we managed to cover from around the globe this year. Quiet Earth has certainly come a long way over the years and it's really due to the talents and passion of our team of writers who literally travel a world of fests to bring news and reviews of new films.
I hope you're all taking notes. Many of these films were from fests and will probably be hitting VOD and Blu-ray sometime in the new year, so this is a good chance to get a start on your must-watch lists.

Quentin Tarantino's friend and longtime film editor, Sally Menke, has been found dead in Los Angeles at the age of 56. Menke went hiking with her dog in Beachwood Canyon on Monday, September 27, when the city was experiencing record heat waves, but failed to return home.
Her body was discovered in the early hours of Tuesday, September 28, after pals alerted authorities to her absence, reports the Los Angeles Times. Her pet pooch was found alive and well.
Menke began her career in 1990 when she landed a job on "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", but her big break came in 1992 when she teamed up with Tarantino for "Reservoir Dogs", the first of eight collaborations between the pair. Her work on "Pulp Fiction" earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Film Editing in 1995 and she received further recognition by the Academy earlier this year with "Inglourious Basterds".

It will likely be Sally Menke's legacy as the editor on all of Quentin Tarantino's films that she was able to make sense of his time-shifting, multistranded narratives in a way no one else could, making it all the more tragic that she died at an age that makes no sense at all, far too young at 56, reported to have collapsed while hiking in Griffith Park. (While it has not been confirmed, the record levels of heat in Los Angeles this week may have been a contributing factor.)
Over her nearly 25-year career in the movie business, Menke worked with some of its most demanding personalities from Oliver Stone ("Heaven and Earth") to Billy Bob Thornton ("All the Pretty Horses"), not to mention starting out on the first "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." But it's her collaboration with Tarantino, beginning on 1992's "Reservoir Dogs" that became one of contemporary film's most impressive creative unions.

Collaborator on films from Reservoir Dogs to Inglourious Basterds thought to have been overcome by heat while hiking
The editor who helped created the signature look of Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Inglourious Basterds has died in Los Angeles.
Sally Menke, 56, who worked on all of Quentin Tarantino's features as well as Oliver Stone's Heaven and Earth and Lee Tamahori's Mulholland Falls, was found in Beachwood Canyon in the Hollywood Hills this morning.
Menke was best known as part of Tarantino's regular post-production team, having been hired to edit his first feature. She told the Observer last year: "He sent me this script for a thing called Reservoir Dogs and I just thought it was amazing."
She went on to forge a strong creative relationship with the director, describing him as "encyclopaedic, passionate, electrifying".

Actor Cillian Murphy could be the latest addition to the cast of Andrew Niccol's "I'm.mortal". Murphy might take on the role of an officer in the organization called the Timekeepers that are after Will. Justin Timberlake is still in the middle of negotiations for the lead role of Will, which means he more than likely will end up with the role. The story, penned by Niccol, focuses on a poor man named Will (Justin Timberlake) who's suddenly given a fortune. He then becomes the target of a murder investigation and kidnaps an heiress (Amanda Seyfried) while on the run. Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing under Strike Entertainment. You can check out Cillian Murphy freak you out once more in Michael Lander's "Peacock", out on DVD now. Peacock is a hard movie to like. But why? The film is appropriately lensed by prolific, Oscar-winning cinematographer Philippe Rousselot (who did a fine job at lighting a steampunk Victorian England in last year’s Sherlock Holmes), bringing a lived-in feel to the small-town Gothic aesthetic of the film. The lead performance, by the usually-reliable Cillian Murphy, is extremely devoted if sometimes puzzling, and the impressive supporting cast (Susan Sarandon, Ellen Page, Josh Lucas, and more) gives the film a pedigree of professionalism. Yet the final product feels immobile, with tepid pacing and perplexing plotting, Murphy’s performance both driving the film and weighing it down. More on that in a bit.

The trailer for Michael Lander's Peacock suggested a strange, somewhat creepy tale of John Skillpa, a quiet man with a secret, a secret that the trailer gives away. But even with the big reveal thrown out so quickly, the trailer does something else: it suggests a film with mystery, intrigue and perhaps a little something sinister as if the fact that John is also Emma is simply a passing fact of little consequence sadly, the truth about Peacock is much less mysterious.
The first twenty minutes of Lander and co-writer Ryan O Roy's script is a thing of beauty. Gorgeously constructed, it features little dialog but manages to convey John/Emma's being in silent movement. We see Emma preparing breakfast, cleaning up and longingly spying on...

Wondering what Cillian Murphy has been up to lately, aside from starring in a few Christopher Nolan films? Here's a look at a trailer for an interesting indie thriller starring Murphy that will be released on DVD through Lionsgate next month called Peacock. Murphy plays a bank clerk in a small town named John Skillpa who has a split personality... it just so happens that his other personality is a woman named Emma. When his neighbours accidentally meet Emma one day, they start to ask questions and his life begins to unravel around him. Although the movie is helmed by first-time director Michael Lander, it has a pretty stellar supporting cast that includes Ellen Page, Susan Sarandon, Josh Lucas, Bill Pullman and Keith Carradine. Clearly Murphy's performance is the focal point of the film, and looking at some of the scenes in the trailer it's a bit hard to believe it's actually him.

John's cross-dressing ways get discovered by an accident near some train tracks. Have a look at this trailer, which shows Murphy in multiple guises.

Irish actor Cillian Murphy is set to hit the big screens later this year in a one role that has him playing two people; John, a quiet bank clerk and Emma, who takes care of him. Murphy, who reveals his multiple personalities early in the movies, stars in Michael Lander's psychological thriller, "Peacock," set in the town of Peacock, Nebraska. The movie is said to be reminiscent of the 60s classic "Psycho" by Alfred Hitchcock. After a train crashes into John Skillpa's (Murphy) back yard, he can no longer hide his other personality, Emma. In an effort to keep the townsfolk from talking, Skillpa needs to convince everyone that John and Emma are husband and wife. And while accomplishing that, other strange things begin to happen, like murder! Murphy, dressed as Emma, as can be seen above with Susan Sarandon. Others joining the pair in the movie are Ellen Page,...

Michael Lander's Peacock promises to be an interesting piece. Cillian Murphy plays John Skillpa, a quiet bank clerk living in the town of Peacock, Nebraska, and after a train crashes in his backyard, he can no longer hide the secret of his multiple personality, Emma, who takes care of him. If that's not weird enough, after he reveals his secret to the town, he has to convince them that his personalities are husband and wife. What?! The movie is slated as a psychological thriller, and after that description the most intriguing part of the film seems like it would be just how they make that synopsis taught and suspenseful. The tag line is .If he only knew what she was doing,. so one might surmise that .she. starts doing a little murdering along with his laundry. The first images from the film dropped today over at Shock Till You...

We've got your first look at the actor as both "man" and "wife" in our photo gallery (click below for more images). Also starring in this Michael Lander-directed effort: Ellen Page, Josh Lucas and Susan Sarandon. This is Lander's first feature. This isn't showing at Sundance, but it is a film most of you will probably be interested in. We first wrote about Peacock way back in early 2008 (it was also shot later that year). It's a new thriller starring Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page directed by first-timer Michael Lander. The movie is set in the town of Peacock, Nebraska where Murphy plays a man with a split personality, husband and wife alter egos. Page plays a young mother who "sparks a battle" between them. We're not sure when it'll ever be out, but The Playlist found a huge batch of photos on an official website we didn't even know existed. So check them out below. The IMDb plot description says: "A train accident in rural Nebraska gradually unveils a mystery involving the town's bank clerk." Susan Sarandon, Bill Pullman and Josh Lucas are joining Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page in Michael Lander's psychological thriller Peacock.
Mandate Pictures and producer Barry Mendel's film is set in Peacock, Neb., where a train crashes into the backyard of a bank clerk (Murphy), revealing a woman no one knew lived there.
Lucas will play his friend and a local cop, Pullman is cast as his supervisor and Sarandon will portray the mayor's wife, who runs the local women's shelter. Page will play a woman from the clerk's past who might hold the secret to the Mystery Woman.
Lander co-wrote the screenplay with co-producer Ryan Roy. Production begins this month in Iowa.
Mandate's Nathan Kahane and Nicole Brown will executive produce, and their outfit's international arm is repping the film's Festival de Cannes sales.

- Call this a post-Oscars afterthought, but I think the inaugural 2005 blacklist for un-produced screenplays is working out to be a fairly good predictor/barometer in discriminating the output of quality films and misfires. The 2005 list (get the full view by scrolling down) had slotted Diablo Cody's Juno as the number two and Nancy Oliver's Lars and the Real Girl as the number three favorites - both were nominated for Best Original Screenplay and we know who won this year. Peter Morgan's The Queen who also happens to be on this list won the previous year. Curiously, filtering through this lengthy list there are a slew of titles that have already hit DVD shelves, or are weeks away from getting a release in theaters and then you have a few that are in various production stages. I was curious in researching some of the top titles, updating those that are familiar,
