They’re the studio behind some of cinema’s most beloved stop-motion characters and stories – including the dark, fantastical coming-of-age Coraline, zombie comedy ParaNorman, samurai epic Kubo And The Two Strings, and, most recently, the massively fun Missing Link. All five of their feature films were nominated for Oscars, and they remain one of the most imaginative, original and eccentric homes for animation in the world. Yes, we’re talking about Laika, the stop-motion super-studio led by CEO and feature director Travis Knight – and in the new issue of Empire, we get to pull back the painstakingly-animated curtain on Laika’s process, paying a visit to their headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

Laika studios has announced its sixth stop-motion movie, “Wildwood.”
The feature is based on the novel written by Colin Meloy, lead singer and songwriter for The Decemberists, and illustrated by artist Carson Ellis. The announcement was made Wednesday by Travis Knight, President & CEO of the award-winning animation studio, who will direct the film. “Wildwood” is currently in production at Laika’s facility outside Portland, Oregon.
The synopsis for the film reads: “Beyond Portland’s city limits lies Wildwood. You’re not supposed to go there. You’re not even supposed to know it exists. But Prue McKeel is about to enter this enchanted wonderland. Her baby brother Mac has been taken by a murder of crows into the forest’s depths, and she – along with her hapless classmate Curtis – is going to get him back. Prue might think she’s too old for fairytales, but she’s just found herself at the center of one.

Stop-motion animation studio Laika has announced what will be their sixth animated feature film: “Wildwood.” And Travis Knight, the company’s president and CEO, is making his return to animated films and will direct the project for the studio.
“Wildwood” is based on a book by the lead singer and songwriter for The Decemberists, Colin Meloy, which also features illustrations by artist Carson Ellis. Production is underway now at the Laika facility outside Portland, Oregon.
The film also has something of a hometown tie for Laika, as it’s the story of an enchanted world called Wildwood that exists just outside Portland’s city limits. When one girl finds her way there after her baby brother has been taken by a murder of crows into the forest’s depths, she finds herself at the center of a fairy tale encountering strange talking animals, roguish bandits and powerful figures with dark intentions.

Exclusive: Oscar-nominated animation house Laika is donating the funds to build a stop-motion animation studio at Bowie State University, marking the first such undertaking at a Historically Black College and University. The partnership is designed to boost the university’s animation curriculum and provide a direct pathway into the industry.
Laika, which has seen all five of its feature films — Kubo and the Two Strings, Boxtrolls, ParaNorman, Coraline and most recently Missing Link — nominated for Oscars, began the initiative with the Maryland university by teaming on an internship program for Bsu students. The relationship grew into the longer-term investment, with Laika now funding upgrades Bowie State’s greenscreen studio.

When predicting the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, there is a very clear link to watch out for every year. Since the Golden Globes gave animated films their own category in 2006, a whopping 10 out of 13 films have gone on to also win the Oscar. This year, the Globes anointed Laika‘s “Missing Link” and immediately made it a front-runner in a wide-open Animated Feature race. As award season has proceeded, “Toy Story 4” has picked up key wins at PGA and the Critics’ Choice Awards, but that doesn’t mean it’s over for “Missing Link.” Not by a long shot.

Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America finished up their annual awards show, highlighted by the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, their version of Best Picture. The PGA top prize is a reliable indicator of future Oscar success, since eight of the last ten winners here have gone on to take the Academy Award as well. Are we in line to see that happen again? Considering that the Producers Guild opted to reward Sam Mendes’ 1917, and the fact that that film is currently surging, we very well might be seeing just that. Read on for more, as well as the rest of the winners… PGA not only went for 1917 in their top category, but they rebuffed the Academy with their Documentary prize, going with Apollo 11, despite it not being nominated in Best Documentary Feature. In the Animated field, they picked Toy Story 4, arguably keeping it the slight Oscar favorite in Best Animated Feature.

Sam Mendes’ World War I drama “1917” got a boost in its bid to win the Best Picture Oscar when it took home the top prize at the 31st annual Producers Guild Awards Saturday night. The winner of the PGA Awards’ top prize, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, has historically been a strong indicator of which film will go on to win the Best Picture Oscar. Since 1989, the PGA winner has matched up with the top Oscar 21 out of 30 times.
Last year, Peter Farrelly’s controversial racial drama “Green Book” took the top PGA trophy before going on to win the Best Picture Oscar. This year “1917” bested the other eight films competing for the top Oscar at the PGAs, as well as a tenth film, Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” — which settled for an Original Screenplay Oscar slot.

The last two Producers Guild of America Awards told us which movies — “Green Book” (2019) and “The Shape of Water” (2018) — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact, 21 of the previous PGA Awards winners have then gone on to claim Best Picture victories.
For the 31st annual ceremony slated for Saturday, January 18 at the Hollywood Palladium, we already know the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. The PGA’s 10 nominated films are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Knives Out,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” All but “Knives Out” contend at the Oscars for Best Picture.

Mere moments ago, the Producers Guild of America announced the nominations for their annual PGA Awards. This is one of the most reliable predictors for the Academy Award category of Best Picture, so pay attention! The ten movies cited in their top category (known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures) are almost always Oscar finalists in Picture. This seems likely to hold true again this year. Read on for more… You can see all of the Producers Guild citations below, but the ten films honored in the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures category are 1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Knives Out, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite. The Best Picture nominees that the Academy cites will likely come from this bunch, though not all will make it, obviously.

The Producers Guild of America has revealed its nominees in the motion picture and television categories for its 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards; nominees include recent Golden Globe winners “1917,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Missing Link,” “Succession,” “Fleabag” and “Chernobyl.”
The PGA, which has about 8,200 members, has matched the Oscar for best picture in 21 of its 30 years, including “The Green Book” last year and “The Shape of Water” in 2018.
The PGA uses a preferential balloting system that’s similar to that employed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The PGA and AMPAS both expanded their voting for the top film to 10 nominees in 2009. About three-quarters of the PGA’s Zanuck nominees wind up as Oscar best picture nominees.
On the TV side, among all of the drama and comedy nominees, only “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (last year’s comedy winner) is a repeat from last year.

Golden Globe winners “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” have both been nominated for the Producers Guild of America’s top film award, along with a slate of nominees that also includes “Parasite,” “The Irishman,” “Marriage Story” and “Little Women.”
Rounding out the PGA list, which is typically an accurate predictor of Oscar success are “Ford v Ferrari,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Knives Out” and the most-nominated film in Tuesday morning’s BAFTA nominations, “Joker.”
“Parasite” is the second film not in English to be nominated in the last two years, after “Roma” last year. The only other non-English films to be nominated in this century were 2000’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” 2006’s “Babel” and 2007’s “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”

It was bound to be an unpredictable night when Ricky Gervais stepped onstage to host the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday, but the shock didn’t stop at responses to his jokes.
The first big surprise of the night came right at the top of the show with the first award (TV musical/comedy actor) being handed to first-time nominee Ramy Youssef. While it certainly set the tone to expect the unexpected, not every category went that way. “Fleabag” and its creator and lead actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge walked away with the comedy series and TV musical/comedy actress trophies, respectively, following their Emmy wins in September, while Michelle Williams followed her own Emmy win with the Globe for limited series/TV movie actress for “Fosse/Verdon,” and HBO’s Emmy-winning “Chernobyl” picked up the limited series/TV movie trophy.

Ricky Gervais has been saying this is his last time hosting the Golden Globes since the first time he hosted the Golden Globes. In 2010, after making a crack about winners buying trophies, the always “unpredictable” comedian explained his apparent devil-may-care attitude by quipping, “I’m not going to do this again anyway.” In 2020, he started the night with that same promise. “You’ll be pleased to know this is the last time I’ll be hosting these awards,” Gervais said. “I don’t care anymore. I’m just kidding. I never did.”
Think about that for a second. The host of a highly anticipated, well-rated awards show — an awards show, mind you, that bills itself as a giant party for famous people — started the night by saying he’s never coming back and he doesn’t care. Now, imagine you walk into a party and the host greets you by saying,...

The surprises started early at the 77th Golden Globes when Ramy Youssef from his Hulu series Ramy was the upset winner of night’s first award, best television actor in a comedy/musical, but most of the shocks were saved for the show’s third hour, when Taron Egerton and Awkwafina won top acting awards in categories dense with marquee contenders.
The 30-year-old Egerton won for portraying Elton John in the classic-rock biopic Rocketman despite facing a field of nominees in the best actor – comedy/musical category that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Eddie Murphy and Daniel Craig. Egerton won a year after Rami Malek took home the same award for portraying another flamboyant British rock icon, Freddie Mercury of Queen, in Bohemian Rhapsody.
Egerton, star of the cheeky spy franchise Kingsman, thanked the piano man he portrayed.“To Elton John, thank you for the music,” Egerton said. “Thank you for living a life less ordinary.

The biggest shock of the 77th Golden Globes came in the Best Animated Feature Film category when Laika’s Missing Link abruptly upgraded its industry stature from “box-office disappointment” to “underdog awards winner” by besting a field of blockbuster rivals with better pedigrees, larger budgets, stronger reviews, and bigger box office.
“I’m flabbergasted,” writer-director Chris Butler said with a dazed expression after he was handed the shiny trophy that most observers expected to go home with one of the three Disney projects nominated.
The victory march for Butler and the film’s producer, Arianne Sutner, was literally a long one in the making — the pair were seated so far in the back of the dining room at the Beverly Hilton that it took quite a while for the tandem to reach the microphone.

Missing Link earned the Golden Globe for best motion picture — animated at Sunday night’s awards ceremony. The movie beat out Frozen 2, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, The Lion King and Toy Story 4 to win the category.
The film’s director and writer Chris Butler didn’t hide his shock at winning the coveted prize.
“Well, I am flabbergasted,” Butler said while accepting the award alongside his producer Arianne Sutner. “So, thank you to the HFPA. It takes a lot of people to make one of these movies, 450 people… human beings who made this possible.

When “Missing Link” producer Arianne Sutner began her career in the early 1990s, fresh out of college, she had a goal: Get a job working on a film set that didn’t involve doing craft service. Because, she says “as women, they were always kind of either intentionally or unintentionally pointing you in that direction.”
After all, back then the number of women working behind the scenes in animation was almost non-existent. Today, it’s a very different story. Nearly all of 2019’s biggest animated movies featured female writers, producers and/or directors crafting family-friendly stories, from “Toy Story 4” (with a screenplay co-written by Stephany Folsom) to “The Secret Life of Pets 2” (produced by Janet Healy) to some of this fall’s biggest releases.
The increase in diversity is something that “Abominable” writer-director Jill Culton attributes to “interest and education.” When she graduated from CalArts in 1992, only five...

Since its inception 14 years ago, Laika has become perhaps the greatest innovator in the medium of stop-motion. Led by President and CEO Travis Knight, the team at the Oregon-based animation studio has worked tirelessly to push creative boundaries with each of its five films, taking on one of its biggest challenges to date with writer/director Chris Butler’s Missing Link.
Starring Hugh Jackman and Zach Galifianakis, Missing Link centers on Sir Lionel Frost, a self-centered investigator of myths and monsters who encounters a Sasquatch in the Pacific Northwest. Learning of the solitary creature’s desire for familial connection, the explorer accompanies him on a journey to the fabled Shangri-La that proves life changing for them both.
With his second feature, following 2012’s ParaNorman, Butler’s goal was to bring the energy of an epic, live-action adventure film into the medium of stop-motion. With its large cast of memorable characters,...

Laika’s latest feature “Missing Link” raises the bar once again for the world of stop-motion, pushing boundaries in scope and visuals. The story of an unlikely friendship between Mr. Frost and his 8-foot yeti buddy Link is one of hope. “Missing Link” producer Arianne Sutner says the message of the film was to “leave people feeling very optimistic,” Sutner continues, “There’s a place for everyone in this world and it’s a big beautiful world where people are different and everyone will find their tribe.”
Creating that world was no easy achievement as writer and director Chris Butler explains below, breaking down how Laika and the creative team worked to create the gorgeous world of “Missing Link.”

After making ParaNorman—the “zombie movie for kids,” which served as his first feature—writer/director Chris Butler wanted to go in an entirely different direction, artistically. “The next thing I wanted to try was a big, bold, colorful adventure movie—stepping out of the shadows, if you like,” Butler said at The Contenders Los Angeles this morning.
Titled Missing Link, the fifth feature from stop-motion innovator Laika was also a big departure for the studio, given its orientation around a set of adult characters. “Before that, we were always dealing with anguished kids, and now, we’re dealing with anguished adults instead,” the director remarked. “So, it was a totally new playground in which to play.”

Though it might seem like just any other puppet you’d find at the Laika stop-motion animation studio, its hardest challenge yet was creating the furry, plump and bright orange monster that became the title character of their latest film “Missing Link.”
The team of stop motion animators had to determine how to make Link’s belly jiggle as it walked, how to stretch its arms, and how its fur should move in the wind. And like any troublesome actor, that often meant this diva of a puppet frequently showed up late to set.
“This little avocado with a face is the most complicated thing we’ve ever created at the studio,” Brian McLean, Laika’s director of rapid prototyping told TheWrap’s Steve Pond following a screening of “Missing Link” at the Landmark Theatres in Los Angeles. “His simple shape and silhouette was really difficult to figure out how...

Following a massive hit with 2016’s “Sausage Party,” Annapurna Pictures’ second animated film looks just as delightful, though decidedly more kid-friendly. Titled “Missing Link,” the movie is the fifth feature from Laika, the stop-motion animation studio behind Oscar-nominated films “Coraline” and “Kubo and the Two Strings.” In the newly released trailer, Zach Galifianakis charms as Mr. Link, an affable giant monkey on a journey to find his long-lost cousins.

Deep in the pacific Northwest, in the rain-drenched, cold brew-infused world of Portland, Ore., Travis Knight has created something strange and very special. Over the past 15 years, the stop-motion helmer and producer has built Laika, a film studio that’s become famous for crafting movies by hand.
They’ve also been lauded for their cutting-edge technologies that they use in conjunction with their stop-motion art. In 2016, Laika won a Sci-Tech award from AMPAS for its 3D printing technologies.
It’s taken years to attract and develop the kind of unusual, gifted artists that can make hits including “ParaNorman” and the critically lauded “Kubo and the Two Strings.” But Knight, who describes himself as a lonely kid who loved to read and become immersed in stories, feels in sync with the creative family who’ve joined him there.

Laika’s fifth film, “Missing Link,” will bow April 19, 2019, breaking free from Focus Features in a North American distribution alliance with Annapurna Pictures. Lionsgate UK has picked up Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson’s animated feature Missing Link. The theatrical distributor has picked up the latest animated offering from Laika, the animation studio behind Kubo and the Two Strings and The Boxtrolls.
Lionsgate struck the deal with Agc International, the international sales and distribution division of Stuart Ford’s Agc Studios, and comes after it launched in Cannes. The deal was unveiled at CineEurope in Barcelona, where footage was also shown.
ParaNorman’s Chris Butler directs the story of charismatic Sir Lionel Frost (Jackman) who considers himself to be the world’s foremost investigator of myths and monsters, but his small-minded high-society peers don’t recognize this. His last chance for acceptance by the adventuring elite rests on traveling to America’s Pacific Northwest to prove the existence of a legendary creature. A living remnant of Man’s primitive ancestry. The Missing Link.

Laika has announced that their fifth stop-motion animated film project will be called Missing Link and they've released a piece of concept art giving us our first visual look. They also revealed the full voice cast and offered up some story details.
Laika is the same production house that brought us Coraline, ParaNorman, and Kubo and the Two Strings. This new project of theirs sounds like it will be a great film and a lot of fun. Producer Travis Knight had this to say in a statement:
"Missing Link is an artistic and technical wonder. Led by our visionary director Chris Butler, Laika has once again blended fine art, craftsmanship, and cutting-edge technology to achieve something we’ve never tried before: a raucous comedy entwined with a swashbuckling epic, underscoring the universal need to find belonging. Commingling keenly felt emotion, madcap humor, and retina-bursting visuals, Missing Link is a kaleidoscopic cinematic experience unlike any other.

Laika’s fifth film, “Missing Link,” will take a mature leap for the Oregon-based stop-motion studio, breaking free from Focus Features in a North American distribution alliance with Annapurna Pictures. “Missing Link” is a buddy comedy/adventure about explorer Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman) and a Yeti named Mr. Link (Zach Galifianakis), who embark on a global quest from the Pacific Northwest in search of the legendary Shangri-La, home of Link’s ancestry. They team up with adventurer Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana), who possesses the only known map to their secret destination.
Once again, Laika embraces acceptance and belonging in its first movie not starring a child hero. Written and directed by Chris Butler (“ParaNorman”), “Missing Link” also features the voice talents of Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, Timothy Olyphant, Matt Lucas,...
