Dearest reader, as you've probably heard by now the director Jonathan Demme has passed away at 73. He died due to esophageal cancer. I had run into him at a screening of La La Land this past September and I took the opportunity to tell him how much Rachel Getting Married meant to me (he joked about being first with interracial weddings for Rosemarie deWitt onscreen). Then we talked Swing Shift for a little bit as we had just discussed it on this very site. I was so saddened by this yesterday that I couldn't do much but tweet my farewells. The words wouldn't come out for a lengthy piece but then, surprise, I remembered I'd written the following piece that was never published (oops) to coincide with the release of Ricki and the Flash (2015). I filled in a few of the blank spots and adjusted some verbs...

Jessica Biel says her latest project was all about family.
The actress, 34, attended the premiere of her film The Book of Love at the 27th Annual New Orleans Film Festival on Saturday night. Joined by her husband Justin Timberlake, 35, the star and producer told People making the film was “truly a family affair.”
“Justin is not only supporting me, but he is supporting the film that he worked really hard on as well,” she told People. “He composed all the music. And it’s just lucky that we are actually able to get here given all the craziness of our...

There's a reason Jessica Biel is so convincing playing a woman about to give birth in her new indie drama The Book of Love—it's because she was about eight months pregnant when she shot the movie. "We had five days to shoot you or else you couldn't fly," Book of Love's director and co-writer Bill Purple said last night during a Q&A with Biel (and moderated by yours truly) at the New Orleans Film Festival. "It was a scary time." Biel laughed, "It was always good to be laying down at that point in my pregnancy." Purple added, "We shot in February and it was like 30 degrees. Our crew buried heaters under the ground to keep Jessica warm. I felt so bad. It was...

What's the only thing worse than a sequel? The only prospect worse than paying £10 at your local cinema to have your favourite movie ruined, forever. The answer has three words. Straight-to-video.
In the '90s, home release sequels became fairly common. You'd greet them with surprise at your local Blockbusters and then want to pull your eyeballs out when you took them home and watched them. They're probably called straight-to-dvd or straight-to-Blu-ray now, but they still exist.
With the announcement that Dolph Lundgren will be starring in Kindergarten Cop 2 (because of course), here are 21 absolute stinking sequels - the vast majority of which weren't even considered good enough for the cinema. How many of them have you watched?
1. American Pie Presents: Band Camp
2. American Pie Presents: Beta House
Maybe it's the Eugene Levy factor - just why did he keep starring in all the sequels?! - but we have weird...

From Doctor Who to Buffy and Supernatural, we celebrate the TV finales that turned out not to be their show's final episodes after all...
Most shows are lucky if they get one finale. So many series are abruptly cancelled before they can make any preparations at all, it’s the lucky few that are given a chance to finish off their story arcs and say goodbye to their characters. And then there are the very few shows that, having managed this impressive feat, are unexpectedly renewed and find that their finale isn’t a finale after all. Here, we celebrate five episodes that would have been excellent series finales, but for the minor point that they aren’t, in fact, the series finale.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Gift

Chicago – “Parental Guidance” is embarassingly bad. Why on Earth Billy Crystal chose this anemic, cliched comedy to essentially come back from retirement is something I’ll never understand. Maybe the star of “City Slickers” and Oscar legend thought this would be his “Meet the Parents”. It’s not.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
What really baffles me about “Parental Guidance” is not the predictable comedy that’s basically about as fresh as a stand-up comedian who does a bit about his dad leaving the Vcr blinking on 12:00 but the emphasis on gross-out humor. At one point, a kid pees on an X Games half pipe being skated by Tony Hawk. I think this is officially the moment that skateboarding becomes no longer cool. If the lame jokes weren’t bad enough the lessons about parenting and generational gaps are just embarrassing. Subplots about imaginary friends and speech therapy are handled in ways that Nick Jr.

Add this to your growing list of records to look out for: Jimmy Eat World's "Damages," the band's seventh studio album, will be released on June 11.
The project comes after 2010's "Invented" and will be the band's first on RCA.
A press release for the record included a tracklist of 10 songs (see below). "Damage" was produced by the band and Alain Johanness, who has worked with the likes of Chris Cornell. It was recorded at Johannes' home studio in Los Angeles.
"We used tape for the first time in a long time, as well as computer," singer-guitarist Jim Adkins tells Rolling Stone. "I hate saying more raw, but it's more raw and warm. We just set up all around Alain's house. There were instruments in his bedroom and drums in his living room. Just noise all day long. There was less an emphasis on it being clean and perfect.

Uncle Sam has a bone to pick with Kevin Federline -- and no, it's not for releasing "PopoZao" -- it's because the IRS says K-Fed still owes back taxes ... to the tune of $57,615.39. A federal tax lien was filed against Britney Spears' baby daddy on February 14th ... claiming K-Fed has outstanding income tax bills for the years 2009 ($30,517.16) and 2010 ($27,098.23). In case you're wondering how K-Fed made money in those years -- besides those hefty spousal...

James Wolk has joined the cast of The Crazy Ones, the David E. Kelley-written comedy about father-daughter advertising agency starring Robin Williams. I'm sorry James Wolk fans. Maybe David E. Kelley is past his self-parody stage?
Deadline reports that Miranda Otto has joined the cast of Rake, the Fox drama pilot that also stars Greg Kinnear as a "frustratingly charming" criminal defense lawyer. You know what this means, we'll be watching looking for the chance to yell "She is no man!" at the TV.
Fox's comedy pilot about a group of New York detectives has just added Stephanie Beatriz, according to The Hollywood Reporter. You'll probably recognize Beatirz for her recent Modern Family role (where she played Gloria's sister). The pilot also stars Andy Samberg and comes from Parks & Recreation's producers. This just keeps sounding better.

This week, in perhaps the most bizarre dates in Bachelor history, Sean took Desiree the bridal stylist to a fake art gallery as part of an elaborate, but not particularly successful, practical joke. While many of you commenting on my recap wondered if Desiree was in on the joke the whole time, this deleted scene from Monday’s episode indicates — to me at least — that Desiree believed she was in a real art gallery… filled with really terrible art. Click through to watch Sean and Desiree peruse and appraise the awful portraits and sculptures.

Ladies and gentlemen, your Miss America 2013 is… Miss New York. I want to start this week by congratulating Miss New York on winning the crown and by thanking the Miss America Organization for having me back again this year to host the show. I have to admit I was a little surprised when I peeked at the card on the stage and saw the judges chose Miss New York over the very popular Miss South Carolina. It was definitely a bit of an upset, but Miss New York is a very deserving winner and really blew the judges away in...

Has it really been 25 seasons already? Yes, rose lovers, Sean’s is the 25th “journey” (17 for The Bachelor, and 8 for The Bachelorette) taken by a hopeless/hapless romantic seeking love in prime time. To celebrate this momentous occasion, overlord Mike Fleiss threw a party for press at Casa Bachelor featuring cocktails, a faux rose ceremony presided over by Sean, and tours of the 8,000 square-foot, probably-not-at-all-infested-with-pubic-lice mansion where the magic happens. This snapshot from the night — featuring (back row) Erica Rose, Sean, Jason, Ali, Casey, Courtney, (front row) Trista, Emily, Molly, Jillian, Stagliano, Deanna, Stagliano No. 2 — says it all, does it not?...

Louisa Lytton has revealed that she will be forever "grateful" for her time in EastEnders. The actress played Ruby Allen in the BBC1 soap from 2005-2006, and has since made a move to Los Angeles, playing a significant role in American Pie: The Book of Love in 2009. Speaking about her role as a British exchange student in the straight-to-dvd movie, she told Ok: "That experience was brilliant, as it does give you an insight into what you want to do in your career. "But there is so much I still want to do at home, like theatre, and build myself up, because I have missed out on things like drama schools. It's funny because when I was there they thought I was a huge star back in Britain! "For them, being a soap star is massive, yet in this country, if you do a soap, you're almost looked down on as an actress.

In 1993, just after the death of my mom, I got a best friend — which was a big deal because I hadn’t had one of those since I was five. No, really. Friendships for me had always been transitory things. People came in and out of my life so often that I just never got really attached.
And, like I said before, I compartmentalized everything, so I never really connected with people in a meaningful way.
Then I met Kelly. At the time, I was basically feral. I had long hair and a leather jacket, loads of anger and more issues than a magazine rack. I was timesharing groups of friends — that is, I had two distinct groups of people I spent time with, none of whom was I very close with.
Oh the geekery....
Kelly picked her way through the briar patch of my defenses with an ease that I found alarming.

There's nothing you can do to stop it: They're making another American Pie movie. This one's called American Reunion, and will check back in with now-married couple Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan, and probably have Eugene Levy dodder by and raise his eyebrows at some point. There's still no official word, however, on whether this film will respect the expansive continuity established in American Pie Presents series of films: Band Camp, The Naked Mile, Beta House and Book of Love. Also up in the air is whether Steve Stifler's younger brothers Matt and Erik will be making appearances or not. Looks like there's still room for some good old-fashioned surprises in Hollywierd, folks!

An American Pie movie just isn’t the same without the entire cast. Watching one without all of its key members is like squeezing blood from a stone. American Reunion has locked in the original cast members from American Pie for the eighth film in the franchise.

American Pie lovers (all both of yous) will be happy to hear the news that most of the film’s stars have signed on for one more sequel called American Reunion. It’s not that we hate the movie—we actually quite enjoyed it when it came out—but any goodwill toward the film was lost with each subsequent sequel (American Pie 2, American Wedding) and spinoff (American Pie Presents Band Camp, American Pie Presents The Naked Mile, American Pie Presents Beta House, American Pie Presents The Book Of Love) that came out of the franchise. But now, there will be (at least) one last hurrah.
American Reunion has signed every major actor from the film (though Alyson Hannigan is still a maybe) to reprise the roles they played in the 1999 film, with Jason Biggs, Eugene Levy, and Seann William Scott among them. If you weren’t really paying attention back then,...

THR are reporting that actors Jason Biggs, Sean William Scott and Eugene Levy have all signed up to appear in the Fourth American Pie movie, which is tentatively titled American Pie: Reunion.
Now you may be wondering why fourth? Surely this is the Eighth movie? Well it seems Universal, despite raking in plenty of money with the loosely connected straight to DVD sequels in which Levy appeared, have decide the the “Presents” tag on Band Camp, Naked Mile, Beta House and the recent Book of Love is enough to differentiate those films from the “core franchise”.
It’s also reported that Universal is currently negotiating with Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Coolidge to appear in the film which will apparently see the gang come together at their high school reunion. Yesterday The Hollywood Reporter announced that three of the stars of the original films Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy have all completed deals to star in American Reunion. They’re also in talks with original cast members Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Coolidge to reprise their roles too.
The script for American Reunion, the fourth film in the American Pie franchises (almost the direct-to-video sequels), will come from Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg who previously teamed on Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. The combo will also direct this flick.
Chris Moore and Craig Perry will produce. Adam Herz, who penned the originals, and Paul and Chris Weitz, who directed the first flick, are executive producing.
The Hollywood Reporter story doesn’t get into much more detail, and it doesn’t mention the fact that Seann William Scott just checked himself into a rehab.

Just when you thought you'd seen the last of the gang from American Pie, Universal is baking another [1]. They've officially locked deals with three of the stars of the original films, Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott and Eugene Levy, to appear in American Reunion, according to The Hollywood Reporter. They're also negotiating with Thomas Ian Nicholas, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Coolidge to reprise their roles as well. American Reunion, which would officially be the fourth American Pie movie with the original cast, but eighth (!) in a lucrative direct-to-video franchise, would surely see the gang come home to Michigan for their high school reunion. Last year, Harold and Kumar screenwriters Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg were rumored to be writing a script [2] but there's no word if they're still involved. More after the jump. The Hollywood Reporter [3] story doesn't get into much more detail after that, and...

And now, 12 years later, comes news from Universal (originally reported by The Wrap) that Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, and Eugene Levy are on board for a reunion flick, titled American Reunion. Of course, it’s only been eight years since the trio shared the screen in 2003′s American Wedding (and only two years since Levy starred in the direct-to-dvd American Pie Presents: The Book of Love), but here’s where today’s news gets even more exciting: Thomas Ian Nicholas,...

Now that the awards season is behind us, the film crop of 2010 can finally be put away in favor of the stuff on the horizon. This weekend features a whole batch of new flicks, and there are also plenty of great movies still kicking around at your local cineplex (including "Drive Angry," a totally kickass 3-D spectacular that deserves to be seen by more people). The movies opening this weekend include the animated adventure comedy "Rango" (which is directed by "Pirates of the Caribbean" helmer Gore Verbinski and stars Johnny Depp as the voice of a justice-seeking chameleon), the science-fiction romance "The Adjustment Bureau" (starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt), the oft-delayed "Beauty and the Beast" adaptation "Beastly" (featuring Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer) and the much-buzzed-about Korean serial killer flick "I Saw the Devil." That's an embarrassment of riches.
But for big laughs and killer music cues, look no...

It’s over 10 years since American Pie both charmed and disgusted us with its mixture of gross-out comedy and sentimentality. Since then there’s been about a million sequels/spin-offs, ranging from the terrible to the unwatchable to the never watched or heard of by anyone, ever.
The original cast have all grown up. Some have achieved further success and others not so much. Producer Craig Perry is hoping to wipe the slate clean from American Wedding (American Pie 3) onwards and bring us American Pie 4 with all the original cast. Here’s what the guy had to say:
“If you start whittling it down, then it is no longer what it is meant to me. Those characters have become part of the cultural lexicon, and I think there’s an interest in seeing where they are, because they haven’t been on screen in seven years. I think that...

I’ve got a major soft spot for the Magnetic Fields and frontman Stephin Merritt, mainly because the singer-songwriter penned one of my very favorite love songs, “The Book of Love.” Merritt is notoriously private, particularly when it comes to public reveals of his personal life in the interest of his music, so the very existence of Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt And The Magnetic Fields is a bit of a wonder. Filmmakers Kerthy Fix and Gail O’Hara spent a solid decade going behind-the-scenes with Merritt and his band, and the resulting work is both intimate and extensive.

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, writers of both Harold and Kumar films to date, and directors of the second, Guantanemo Bay one, have confirmed that they won't be behind the camera for A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas. It's looking as if that job will fall to Todd Strauss Schulson (although the script is still theirs) while they depart for American Pie 4.The pair will also write the new instalment of the baked-goods-shagging franchise, which, it's intended, will bring the original cast back together. No contracts have been signed yet, but The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog says the project is in "high gear" due to "strong interest" from the actors. Which is surprising, since they've all done so much since the originals.Technically speaking, AP4 will actually be the eighth film in the series, which has carried on with straight to DVD instalments about the extended Stifler family (in Band Camp,...

Bye, bye, rubbish American Pie. After four straight to DVD sequels, the American Pie franchise as we know it is coming to an end - although it could be coming back bigger and better than ever before. While 2003's third official movie in the canon, American Wedding, proved there was still mileage left in the increasingly disgusting, gross-out teen story of Stifler, Jim, Michelle and Nadia, an ever-worsening number of spin-offs - culminating with last year's The Book Of Love - only served to tarnish the name of a series that was already pretty dirty to begin with.

Sooooo….this is awkward.
I want to start off by making clear my stance on this DVD is that you should buy it. Go right out and purchase it any which way you can.
My second point is that not only is this a movie the venerable Roger Ebert reviewed glowingly on his blog a year ago but you can go on the film’s website and watch it for free.

Bret Michaels knows a thing or two about women. He might know a few more things about love. So that's why, when the "American Pie" team needed a male expert in all things love and peanut butter, the "Rock of Love" star and Poison frontman seemed like the likely candidate to make a cameo in "American Pie Presents: The Book of Love," which hits stores today.
"Well here's what I know. These are the facts. Obviously I'm very aware of the series," he told MTV News. "They had actually called and said 'Look we have this part and we think it would be funny. It's a very peanut butter-oriented part, in which no one will ever look at peanut butter the same again.'"
When it was explained to him that it was similar in nature to the now infamous apple pie scene in the original flick he couldn't help...

The American Pie series is back with yet another sex-filled romp through the halls of Great Falls High. Not much has changed since the Class of 1999 made a pact to get laid by prom. The kids change, but the sexual frustration stays the same. Well, most of the kids change. For some reason, there is still a Stifler – most likely the now teenage brother, and successor, to the elder Stifler. And yet, we are given three new seniors to follow along on their quest to lose, not find. Lose of course their virginity. There’s the guy with the girlfriend that just can’t seem to hit a home run, instead of being stuck at second base. There’s the nerdy guy who just can’t seem to muster...

I knew there was a reason why my editor decided to move to Australia! Anything to get out of reviewing the seventh American Pie film. Wow, seven films all based around the already-thin idea of horny high school kids. I’m not even sure how to go about reviewing this one honestly. I guess I’ll start with the “plot”.
The Book of Love was actually mentioned 10 years ago in the very first American Pie movie. It’s a book that teaches young males all about how to go about pleasing a woman. The best oral techniques, how to flatter them, what to buy them, the best way to lie to them and other random sexist things. Three randy virgins find the book hidden in the school library, but due to a painfully unfunny mishap involving fire and the sprinkler system, some of the information becomes ruined. Former EastEnders star Louisa Lytton has revealed that she is considering a permanent move to Los Angeles. The 20-year-old recently made her Hollywood debut by filming a role in The Book Of Love, the latest movie in the American Pie franchise. Discussing her future career plans in an interview with FHM, Lytton confirmed: "I could definitely see myself in La. It's nicer than Albert Square, I'm afraid.
"I'd love to meet Lindsay Lohan and go partying with her. Maybe I'll have to come back when I'm 21. Though I look so young it's not even worth it." Lytton played Ruby Allen in EastEnders from 2005 to 2006. She then (more)...

Why I kept watching the American Pie series after the third film was beyond me. They all involved a member of the Stiffler family, and were all terrible. But for the first time since American Wedding, the series takes an upturn with a smaller, funnier film that only has a few truly dumb hiccups along the way.
The Book Of Love is the first film since the original that doesn’t follow a member of the Stiffler family, and for that it deserves some credit. The Stiflers are obnoxious characters and every single one of them is just doing a bad impression of Seann William Scott’s performance of the original. It’s like they exist in some weird universe where every member of the family acts the exact same way, which is something I don’t think anyone can really relate to. The focus this time is on Rob...

I know the demographic who watches all of the American Pie Presents films is quite narrow, but when I came across the trailer for American Pie Presents: The Book of Love, I had to step back and give them a bit of a golf clap. Who would have ever thought that a little high school sex comedy from 1999 would go on to spawn two theatrical sequels and four straight-to-video titles? Were there any among us who saw Jason Biggs get intimate with an apple pie and thought, "My God, there needs to be seven of these movies"?
Yet here we are with the trailer for The Book of Love, the seventh entrant to the canon of Pie. And in case you're not a die hard fan of the last three films, they were a trip to Band Camp, a lap running The Naked Mile, and a Beta House whose crowning...
