Exclusive: Laura Harrier (White Men Can’t Jump) has been tapped for a major role opposite Bill Skarsgård and Nicolas Cage in Lords of War, the sequel to 2005 crime thriller Lord of War, which Andrew Niccol (Anon) wrote and is directing for Vendôme Pictures (Coda), sources tell Deadline.
Lords of War picks up the story of Yuri Orlov (Cage), the world’s most notorious gunrunner, watching as he discovers he has a son, Anton (Skarsgård), who isn’t trying to right his father’s wrongs — he’s trying to top them. Not only selling guns but the “trigger pullers” too, Anton is amassing a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts. This is the story of Yuri and Anton’s bitter rivalry — even at odds over the same woman. Who will prevail when father and son go to war?
Specifics as to Harrier’s part are under wraps.

“Oppenheimer” is the juggernaut Oscar contender that is predicted to take home not just Best Picture but a whole bunch of other Academy Awards, too, including Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. However, we thought that “La La Land” had Best Picture all wrapped up in 2017 but come Oscars night, “Moonlight” swept in to claim the evening’s biggest prize in a shock win. So, is “Oppenheimer” as safe as everyone thinks?
“The Holdovers” is well-poised to pull off an upset. The movie follows Paul Giamatti as a curmudgeonly professor who is forced to look after students staying behind during the Christmas holidays. The film has been a hit with critics, audiences, and awards groups, too.
As such, it could be a major dark horse to win the Oscar for Best Picture. In the last 10 years, four movies have claimed the top prize...

"Lord of War" is one of Nicolas Cage's best movies, but not one that is usually brought up in a conversation about his work. After all, he doesn't give a deranged, larger-than-life performance like in "Face/Off," and the story isn't over-the-top or even based on a very known figure, like "Renfield." Instead, it is a drama from 2005 written and directed by "The Truman Show" writer Andrew Niccol.
The film follows Cage as an illegal arms dealer who works around the world, selling weapons regardless of what atrocities are committed, usually to both sides of a conflict. Of course, he eventually gets way in over his head and becomes the target of the very people he sells weapons to. The film also starred Ethan Hawke, Ian Holm, Jared Leto, and Bridge Moynahan. It got decent reviews and was a relative commercial success, but "Lord of War" is definitely not the...

Vendôme Pictures, the production house behind Sian Heder’s Oscar-winning film “Coda,” is set to produce “Ibelin,” a feature film which will be directed by Morten Tyldum (“The Imitation Game”).
Penned by Kyle Killen (“Halo”), the film will be inspired by the real-life story of Mats Steen, a disabled boy from Norway who went by ‘Ibelin’ in the gaming world.
Vendôme Pictures’ Philippe Rousselet and Fabrice Gianfermi are producing alongside Tyldum and Guri Neby (“The Monkey and the Mouth”) for Neby-Tyldum As. Principal photography will take place in the U.S., suggesting that the action will take place in the U.S. rather than Norway. Production dates yet to be set.
Like “Coda,” “Ibelin” will likely be a heart-wrenching drama. Steen died at the age of 25 from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. His parents, Robert and Trude, mourned what they thought had been a lonely and isolated life for their disabled son.

Morten Tyldum, the Norwegian director of The Imitation Game, Headhunters and Passengers, has signed on to direct Ibelin, based on the true-story of Norwegian gamer Mats Steen.
Steen, who suffered from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, died in 2014 at the age of 25. On the day of his funeral, held in a chapel in Oslo, people from all over Europe showed up to pay tribute to Mats, who they knew by his World of Warcraft handle Ibelin, giving heartfelt speeches about how he had enriched and changed their lives. On the surface, Mats Steen lived an isolated and lonely life alone with his parents. Online, he helped create and support a global community that transcended age, geography and time.
“Ever since hearing about Mats and meeting his family, this is a story I felt needed to be shared with the world,” Tyldum said in a statement.

Sian Heder’s heartwarming family film “Coda” not only scored a historic Oscar for Deaf actor Troy Kotsur, it’s also the first English-language remake of a French film to win the best picture Academy Award.
Acquired by Apple Studios at the 2021 Sundance in a record-breaking 25 million deal, “Coda” is based on the 2014 French box office hit “La Famille Bélier,” about a teenage girl with a singing talent who is the only hearing member of a Deaf family. Like most remakes, the underdog movie could have died off after sitting on a shelf for too long had it not been for the all-star team of French producers with U.S. ties who shepherded the project.
Besides Jérôme Seydoux at Pathé Films, which fully financed the movie, “Coda’s” lead producers are Philippe Rousselet, who worked for many years at Warner Bros. in L.A. and produced “Lord of War” and...

What’s the value of winning an Oscar? For Apple, the historic Oscar best picture win for original film “Coda” on Sunday has produced immediate results — drawing 25 new viewers to the Apple TV Plus streaming service, and pushing viewing of the film up more than 300 compared with the week prior.
Apple’s Academy Award-winning film “Coda” beat Netflix to grab the crown as having the first film on a streaming service win the top Oscar prize. It’s also the first movie starring a predominantly Deaf cast in leading roles to win an Oscar for best picture.
Of course, the numbers about “Coda’s” performance on Apple TV Plus, provided by a source close to the tech company, don’t reveal all that much. Apple has never disclosed how many subscribers it has for Apple TV Plus, so it’s unclear what the 25 increase in new viewers signals in terms of real numbers.

France’s president Emmanuel Macron has celebrated the win of Coda at the Oscars last night by tweeting his congratulations to the filmmakers involved.
Sian Heder’s Apple TV+ movie is a remake of the French film La Famille Bélier, which was box office hit back in 2014.
French producer Philippe Rousselet, one of the creators of the original film, was behind the remake alongside Patrick Wachsberger, Fabrice Gianfermi, and Jerôme Seydoux.
Along with its Best Picture win, the film also scooped Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur. The result made Apple TV+ the first streamer to win the Academy’s top prize.
“The film Coda, [an] adaptation of The Bélier family, won the Oscar for best film in Hollywood!” Read Macron’s Twitter statement, translated from the original French. “A big congratulations to its producers, French, and to the teams who make it a success abroad. With this film, they look...

The Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” entered these awards with a leading 12 nominations, which is also the most nominations any Netflix film has ever received. Troy Kotsur’s exciting journey on the awards circuit culminated into a history-making moment at the 94th annual Oscar Awards. On Sunday, the Coda actor took home the best supporting actor prize and became the first male actor to win for a performance in American Sign Language.
Upon receiving the honor from Minari Oscar winner and Pachinko star Youn Yuh-jung, Kotsur dedicated his win to a number of communities that have often been marginalized in entertainment.
“This is dedicated to the deaf community, the Coda (Child of Deaf Adult) community and the disabled community,” he said. “This is our moment.”
Kotsur bested fellow nominees Ciarán Hinds, Jesse Plemons, J.K. Simmons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Ahead of the ceremony, Kotsur received honors for the same role at the BAFTA Awards, Film Independent Spirit Awards, Hollywood Critics Association Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

After several years in which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences vacillated between eight or nine Best Picture nominees, Oscar has returned to a set number of 10 films for its top prize. The whole idea of doubling the amount from five to 10 came about in 2010 to encourage voters to select a broader range of films that might actually include some popular titles. That lasted a couple of years before the Academy tweaked it, allowing anywhere from five to 10 movies to make the cut. Now, with dwindling ratings, AMPAS once again decided to pin their hopes on a solid 10 in the hope that a Spider-Man or a Bond film could catch the fancy of the 9,487 eligible voters and help improve ratings with an audience favorite or two for viewers to root for. No such luck. This year’s lineup, which certainly has its share of warm-hearted crowd pleasers, only...

Four of this year’s Best Picture nominees are remakes. For “West Side Story,” “Dune,” and “Nightmare Alley,” that meant risky comparisons. For “Coda,” it’s like it never happened.
It’s no secret that “Coda” is an adaptation, but you’ve likely never seen “La Famille Bélier,” the 2014 French film on which “Coda” is based. A massive hit in France, it grossed $55 million — the per-capita equivalent to over $300 million domestic. Worldwide, it grossed $86 million.
And yet there is little evidence that the film ever had any public showings in the United States. In Canada, it screened only in French-speaking regions. (DVDs with English subtitles can be ordered online.)
France is a reliable resource for American remakes, like United Artists’ “The Birdcage” (“La Cage Aux Folles”), STX Entertainment’s “The Upside” (“Intouchables”), and “Three Men and a Baby” (“Trois Hommes et un Couffin”). “Intouchables” was released all over the world.

It’s all come down to this. Ninety-four years of Oscar history have been digested and cross-examined to help yield the critical answer: Which films and performances will win Academy Awards on March 27?
By the sheer scope of its nomination tally, Netflix is the closest it’s ever been to taking home the statuette for the Academy’s most prestigious prize. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” has won the most critics’ awards for best picture, and the film has walked away with the top honor at the BAFTA and DGA ceremonies, which have Oscar-voter crossover. However, in what feels like an even divide, some Academy members told Variety they were ranking it at No. 1 on their preferential ballot, while others were putting it toward the bottom of that category.

From Sundance to Apple TV+ and, now, Oscar frontrunner status, the journey of “Coda” is next headed for the stage.
IndieWire can confirm that an official “Coda” musical is in the works, courtesy of Vendôme Pictures and Pathé partnering with Tony Award–winning Deaf West Theatre. “Coda,” which stands for Child of Deaf Adults, stars Emilia Jones as a teen trying to launch her singing career as the only hearing member of a deaf family. While Ruby’s life is centered on being an interpreter for her parents, played by Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur, plus working on their fishing boat with her brother (Daniel Durant), she dreams of attending a prestigious music school.
“Coda,” directed by Sian Heder, made history as the biggest Sundance acquisition ever, courtesy of Apple, which picked it up for $25 million. The film is nominated for three Academy Awards — Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Kotsur.

Apple Studios emerged the big winner of what some say is an important Oscar precursor on Saturday night, as “Coda” took the top film prize at the annual Producers Guild Awards.
What began as a Sundance sales sensation directed by Sian Heder — the heart-tugging story following the only hearing family member in a tribe of charismatic New England fishermen — won the Darryl F. Zanuck award for best motion picture producing. Other notable film winners at Los Angeles’ Fairmont Hotel were Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” for documentary feature, and the musical juggernaut “Encanto” for best producers of an animated film.
“Succession” took home the Norman Felton Award for outstanding episodic drama. Apple’s “Ted Lasso” continued its trophy collection spree by claiming the Danny Thomas Award for outstanding television comedy. HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” won the David L. Wolper award for outstanding producer of a limited series.

The Producers Guild of America Awards will be held on March 19, honoring the best achievements in TV and film production, and since the Oscar for Best Picture goes to the producers, the PGA’s Best Theatrical Motion Picture award is one of the best hints we get into what the Oscars might do, especially since both awards decide Best Picture with the same kind of preferential ballot. This year both the PGA Awards and the Oscars could do something they’ve never done before: honor a streaming movie.

A weekend trio of big wins for Netflix at the DGA, BAFTA and Critics Choice awards has given Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” the gas required to make it over the finish line. That’s if it can keep its closest competitors — “Belfast” from Kenneth Branagh and “Coda” from Siân Heder — at bay.
The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, which is the top prize from the PGA Awards, has been one of the most vital and telling precursors from all major guilds. In 2009, both the PGA and the Oscars switched the voting for their highest honor to a preferential ballot system. In terms of films perceived to be divisive with audiences, PGA has become the litmus test for whether or not those contenders have the goods to win.
