Lots and lots of Patton Oswalt as the hunt for the Darkhold heats up on this week’s episode of Marvel’s Agents Of Shield
This Agents Of Shield review contains spoilers.
4.12 Hot Potato Soup
New viewers tuning into Marvel’s Agent Of Shield this week might think that they are seeing double because some top notch acting talent was pulling some double and triple duty as the hunt for the Darkhold takes a startling turn.
Hot Potato Soup saw the return of the Agents Koenig this week as Patton Oswalt returns in multiple roles. Meanwhile, Doctor Radcliffe hires a group of some pretty badass inhuman hating Russian mercs to help abduct the Koenigs and find the location of the Darkhold. Coulson gives the Koenigs the Darkhold for safe keeping, but sadly, at the beginning of the episode, Radcliffe’s crew abducts Sam Koenig and the hunt is on.

Last week I did a review on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode "Wake Up" and one of our vigilant readers (Randomironicname) reflected on the status of Patton Oswalt's characters, Agents Sam, Billy, and the deceased Eric Koenig, and wondered if they were actually LMDs (Life Model Decoys) or simply just siblings. Sure enough, one week later, Agents will focus on them in the episode called "Hot Potato Soup". Check out the trailer and synopsis below the link!

Ahead of tonight’s brand new episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., “Wake Up,” ABC has released a batch of promotional images and the synopsis for next week’s installment, which carries the unusual title of “Hot Potato Soup.” Though his highly anticipated comeback was expected, the pics give us our first look at Patton Oswalt as one of the returning Koenig…. brothers?
When we were first introduced to Oswalt on the show a few years back, he was playing the lanyard-obsessed Agent Eric Koenig. However, when the character was murdered by Grant Ward, it was revealed that Eric (seemingly) had two identical twin brothers named Billy and Sam, who both behaved in a suspiciously similar manner to their late sibling. This led to speculation that they may actually be clones, and the fact that they’re now returning in the midst of this current...

In a fitting announcement, Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Patton Oswalt will be returning to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Sam and Billy Koenig. Oswalt debuted on the show as Eric Koenig in the first season, who was murdered by Hydra agent Grant Ward. Season 2 introduced his identical brothers, Sam and Billy, also played by the actor. Given the characters' eerily identical looks and vocal greetings, many fans have theorized that the Koenigs were actually Life Model Decoys, which have now been officially introduced in the show's fourth season. Could this mean the Koenigs will be confirmed as Lmd's? Showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen have teased that something will be revealed: “Patton Oswalt returns as the Koenigs, and we finally reveal their family secret.” Oswalt will return in the January 31st episode, "Hot Potato Soup", which will see Sam and Billy being hunted down by an unknown force in relation to the Darkhold.

Dust off your chakram because Xena herself, Lucy Lawless, has signed up for the second season of Marvel's Agents Of Shield. ABC’s series now doesn’t just offer connective tissue with the Marvel Cinematic Universe now, it’s forever bonded with Xena: Warrior Princess too. Sure, it may sound like a tenuous connection but try telling that to the Comic-Con brigade as the geek streams cross and potentially explode the planet.Cylon Number Three in Battlestar Galactica, Lawless has also popped up recently in Spartacus and Parks And Recreation fans will have clocked her as Ron Swanson's other half, Diane.Season two of Agents Of Shield will pick up with a potentially damaged Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) running the agency in Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) stead. Lawless joins fellow newbie Patton Oswalt who plays Eric Koenig, a member of the World War II Howling Commandos in the comic books,...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has completed its last mission: delivering a passable season finale. Despite its ominous title, last night's "Beginning of the End" plays it pretty safe: The good guys survive, the bad guys go down, and the only character who dies is John Garrett, played by the splashy (and presumably expensive) guest star Bill Paxton. Take out Fitz's debilitating injuries, and this is basically a Wayne's World–style "mega-happy ending"; we even get Patton Oswalt back, playing Eric Koenig's identical twin/clone/Life Model Decoy Billy Koenig."Beginning of the End" begins by dispensing with last week's cliff-hanger in about 90 seconds. (It's a good thing May brought that berserker staff, and the Hydra's soldiers are content to stand around while she brings the roof down on them.) From there, the episode gets down to business as Coulson and Garrett assemble their teams for a final battle. This is...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has really been on a roll these past few episodes, and “The Only Light in the Darkness” was no exception. It was an episode that I had been looking forward to for awhile thanks to the inclusion of Coulson’s mysterious cellist, but after last week’s development, I was also super curious to see what would happen now that Ward had rejoined the team with his Hydra cover intact.

Okay, before we dive into the latest episode of Agents of Shield, I first have to express my utter disappointment in the untimely murder of one Agent Eric Koenig. I might be more upset about this than the Hydra infiltration in the first place.
How could someone as likable and funny as Patton Oswalt get the shaft after only a two-episode arc? And killed by Ward, no less, that traitor. There's no redemption for you now, buddy. Even if you make a last-ditch effort and save Skye or Coulson or someone else on the team, you're dead to me. I've said ever since his betrayal that Ward makes a much better bad guy with a whole extra layer of depth that wasn't there when he was fighting for good, but man, did this one cross a line.

ABC and Marvel Studios have brought online a clip from next week's episode of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," featuring Patton Oswalt reprising his role as Agent Eric Koenig. As you can watch in the player below, Koenig wants the Agents to take an unbeatable lie detector following the recent reveal of Hydra. Created by Stan Lee and Dick Ayers, Koening made his comic book debut in 1966 in "Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos" #27. The character was a originally a member of Nick Fury's battalion during World War II. Fans were introduced to the series version of Koenig in this week's episode, "Providence," where it was revealed that he is a Level Six agent currently running the episode's eponymous safehouse. Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is finally moving in the right direction. Here's James' review of Providence...
This review contains spoilers.
1.18 Providence
Here's the thing I want to know about Agents Of Shield: if they were capable of writing a good episode, why didn't they start seventeen episodes ago?
Still, in the wake of the events of last episode/Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Agents Of Shield has finally got a mission statement you can actually define: they're rebuilding Shield to combat Hydra. This is a hugely encouraging development, because while "protecting the world from weird stuff" might be a laudable goal, it's so general (and overused) as to be wholly uninspiring. This new structure is one I can get behind, because it's something we haven't really seen before: FBI, CIA and other acronym organisations can't really be dismantled, but fictional ones? That's another matter entirely.

Agents of Shield, Season 1, Episode 18, “Providence”
Written by Brent Fletcher
Directed by Milan Cheylov
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm Est on ABC
In the aftermath of Shield’s destruction, Agents of Shield splits “Providence” between the remaining members of Coulson’s team trying to figure out what is next and Ward and Garrett heading off to the Fridge for evil plotting and mustache-twirling. At first, Coulson wants to go completely off the grid, but he rethinks this plan when he discovers glowing coordinates on his Shield badge. He believes the coordinates are a clue from Fury himself as to where to go and how to find him. May, however, thinks that Coulson isn’t thinking clearly in the aftermath of Shield’s demise, and she worries that his decisions are putting everyone else in danger.
“Turn, Turn, Turn” and Captain America: Winter Soldier are both action-heavy, but “Providence” is more about the laughs.

Previously on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D… well, let’s just say trust is a little hard to come by these days. S.H.I.E.L.D. has fallen. The team itself remains wary of whom they can actually count on, thanks to the events of last week. Hydra, which has been quietly infiltrating the organization for far longer than anyone can really comprehend (pawning a little background from Zola and Winter Soldier here) has finally prevailed. And just when we thought we had everyone figured out, Ward — Ward, of all people! — has gone to the dark side.
Or has he?...

I tuned in just in time this week to catch Ward's act of betrayal again, followed by the Hydra symbol instead of the Shield one. I'm less convinced now than last week that Ward is faking anything. Those three bullets he put in Hand at close range would seem to be fairly inarguable, and as more back-story was revealed over the course of the episode, it seems like Ward has been garbage since frame one. That's cool. That's the version of the story I hope they're telling. If he turns out to just be faking everything, it's going to really irritate me. Right now, Ward suddenly got a personality, and he's suddenly an interesting character with some actual dimension to him. If they try to wrap everything up this year by just making him a good guy again, it's going to feel like it's just not playing fair anymore. There...

Discussion online about the fate of the ABC show has intensified in recent days, given that the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier sees Shield being disbanded due the infiltration of Hydra.
Whedon recently spoke to TVLine about the shocking development, and revealed that he was well-briefed by Marvel.
"We know a lot about every movie a long time before it comes out," the writer insisted. "We get to read the scripts and see early cuts, so if and when there are things that affect our world, we have a lot of time to prepare. "Marvel's Agents of Shield" added a very exciting cast member to its roster recently: Patton Oswalt. He's playing Agent Eric Koenig, who in the comics lived during World War II. One of the biggest questions surrounding Oswalt's involvement in the show is what role his character serves in the present day.
Assumedly Oswalt has been swarmed with questions about his role on social media. Being the social media savvy person that he is, Oswalt responded to those requests with some "spoilers" from this episode. We'll let you decide how truthful he is being with those teases. See his tweets below:

What’s the best thing that could possibly happen to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Well, I know what I think would be a great thing for the series (creator Joss Whedon showrunning fulltime and a huge crossover with the Marvel Studios films), but I tend not to think within the realm of realism. But in terms of simple casting decisions, I think it’s great that funny man and uber nerd Patton Oswalt was approached for a very promising role in the TV series. Few actors deserve to be a part of this amazing universe, but Oswalt absolutely is one of them. I can’t wait to see what Marvel does with him.

Marvel has announced that comedian Patton Oswalt (Big Fan, Justified) will guest star in an upcoming episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Agent Eric Koenig.
Koening was a character created by Stan Lee and Dick Ayers. He made his comic book debut in 1966 in Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #27. Fresh off all that media buzz about how HBO’s cult comedy The Comeback should get a comeback (sorry, I had to go there eventually), HBO is considering reviving it as a limited series. I’m excited and wary, The Comeback was an amazing, ahead-of-its-time series. It’s pretty dangerous trying to recapture that kind of magic, especially when one of the minds behind it now works on the aggressively regressive 2 Broke Girls.
It’s disappointing news but we were warned it was probably coming. USA has ordered a final, six-episode season of White Collar. Is it just me or have we been talking about a lot of USA dramas heading to their series finales, lately?
I’m going to miss these guys saving each other.

Accepting a guest role in Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn't, we'd imagine, a tough decision for Patton Oswalt, an actor/comedian who's made no secret of his comic book love over the years.
Oswalt is to play Agent Eric Koenig in a fothcoming episode, whose first appearance was made in Sgt. Fury And The Howling Commandos issue number 27. It's the actor/comedian's second involvement with a Whedon-led project, after his role as Joel Mynor in a couple of episodes of Dollhouse.
Since the end of long-running sitcom King Of Queens, Oswalt has made guest appearances in a range of cult comedy hits, from Flight Of The Conchords, to Community, The Venture Bros, Portlandia and more. Arguably one of his best performances though, is in Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody's Young Adult,...

You're probably already familiar with your new favorite "Marvel's Agents of Shield" guest star: Patton Oswalt, who will play Agent Eric Koenig in an upcoming episode of the ABC drama.
According to Marvel, Oswalt snagged the role when producers asked him to come on board. The character of Koenig first appeared in the comics in "Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #27," and was a part of Nick Fury's original team of World War II soldiers.
"I got a call from my agent saying they want you on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and I said 'hell, yes,'" the actor tells Marvel. "I'm lucky that I'm visible enough that they wanted to bring me in to play this character. I'd worked with ['Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Executive Producer] Joss [Whedon] before on 'Dollhouse,' and I guess I wasn't too annoying and they decided to put me on another one of his shows. So I was very lucky.

Does it make me a bad person if I'm still surprised each time Patton Oswalt is cast as an actor? Don't get me wrong… I think he's very good. I think the work he's done in films like "Big Fan" and "Ratatouille" and "Young Adult" is great. It's just that I still think of him primarily as a stand-up. I also think of him as a consummate fanboy, a guy who unabashedly loves what he loves, and a big part of what he loves is the world of comic books. It must be delightful when your various passions all converge, and I'm willing to bet that Patton practically sprinted to set when he got the call to join "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." as Agent Eric Koenig. If you're a fan of Nick Fury's history, you might recognize Koenig's name. He was a member of the...
