Sony’s ’65’ and Universal’s ’Champions’ are also new this weekend.
This weekend’s widest opener at the UK-Ireland box office is Scream VI, the latest offering from the iconic horror franchise, hitting 624 locations for Paramount.
It is slightly up on locations to Scream – the fifth film in the slasher series – which opened to an impressive £2.5m from 622 sites in January 2022, at an average of £3,955, making it the highest-performing horror title since the pandemic at the UK-Ireland box office.

The dynamics of a long relationship are under the microscope in Marcus Markou’s examination of a couple whose marriage is breaking down
Ten years after directing and self-distributing his feature debut Papadopoulos & Sons, Marcus Markou is back with another impressively-put-together low-budget movie. This time around he’s made a serious and slightly self-conscious divorce drama with a pair of deeply-felt performances by Laura Bayston and Laurence Spellman. They play Cassie and Matthew, a couple from London, separating in their 40s.
To the outside world, Cassie and Matthew’s divorce looks like the model of amicability: they’ve managed to agree on everything without going to court. But it gets messy at their final mediation session, as years of hurt and resentment boil over. Cassie has been the breadwinner, and she can’t help bringing up the fact that she’s “giving” Matthew the house. Furious, he yells that...

Exclusive: Laurence Spellman (Ready Player One) and Laura Bayston (Killing Eve) are leading the cast of UK indie The Wife And Her House Husband, a two-hander from Papadopolous & Sons filmmaker Marcus Markou.
Pic tells the story of a couple, Cassie (Laura Bayston) and Matthew (Laurence Spellman), falling back in love during a divorce. At their final mediation session, Cassie produces a letter, written 30 years before to their future selves, titled “in the event of any future separation”. The letter states that if they should ever split, they will firstly follow a list of instructions they compiled during the early days of dating.
Filming is now underway on the movie in London. It is produced by Muireann Price (Love me till Monday) for Double M Films.
“Whilst we know it’s been a tough time for the industry, for independent movies it’s been almost impossible given the extra overheads and restrictions.

Cassian Elwes’ Movie Collective Hits Target, Anjelica Huston Film ‘Utopia Road’ Financed (Exclusive)
Movie Collective, the crowdfunding venture launched by producer Cassian Elwes and filmmaker Marcus Markou, has hit its first investment target, clearing the way for Anjelica Huston picture “Utopia Road” to enter production.
The new venture set out to raise an initial £500,000 and hit that target this week ahead of the June 20 deadline. The first-round investors, 458 in all, hold 15.17% in Elwes and Markou’s Movie Collective. The company said they will get dividends and a share in profits. The founders do not get a dividend until the investors have recouped half of what they put in.
Backers buy into the Movie Collective slate rather than specific projects, which is the usual crowdfunding model for indie projects. The company’s stated aim is to “get indie films financed in a landscape dominated by big-budget studio fare.”

Exclusive: Movie Collective, the crowdfunding film venture set up by Mudbound producer Cassian Elwes and Papadopoulos & Sons director Marcus Markou, has raised £100,000 ahead of its Crowdcube equity drive.
The pair have raised the initial amount from private investors ahead of the launch of the Crowdcube campaign on May 1. They are looking to raise an initial £500,000. Elwes and Markou say that the scheme is different from other crowdfunding offerings rather than giving investors the opportunity to back one single project and receive perks, Movie Collective has a slate of projects at various stages of development, and investors will receive equity in the production company itself. It is the intention of the company to pay prospective profits as a dividend to equity stakeholders, with remaining profits used to help finance other projects on the slate.

How Kevin Smith challenged the distribution model for cinema, and what happened next...
Kevin Smith’s career has taken some interesting turns over its three decades and counting. He’s criticised Bruce Willis, parted ways with the Weinsteins, sewn Justin Long into a Walrus suit, given us the spectacle of Johnny Depp with a penis shaped nose, and even picketed his own releases. And he did those last two things twice over. He’s one of the most unpredictable filmmakers working today, he’s made podcasting a filthily brilliant art form and his projects frequently reach fever dream levels of brilliance and bizarre. But possibly the most interesting occurrence in Smith’s career was the furore and fallout, or lack thereof, surrounding his 2011 release Red State.
After the critical mauling Smith received for his studio project Cop Out in 2010, he returned to his indie roots with the...

After five days, sequel earns 73% of box office of Despicable Me, giving Universal three of five biggest openings of the year
The winner
Wimbledon, Glastonbury and glorious weather across much of the UK created a perfect storm of challenging conditions for cinemas, resulting in some weak debuts and steep falls for existing movies. But a film that audiences really want to see can overcome any obstacle, a phenomenon witnessed many times in the past and seen at the weekend with the release of Despicable Me 2.
Debuting with an astonishing £9.95m, plus £4.87m from two days of previews, after just five days the sequel has achieved 73% of the lifetime box office (£20.2m) for the original Despicable Me. That film debuted in October 2010 with £3.66m including £205,000 in previews – at the time considered a great result for a film based on characters with no pre-existing audience awareness, and from a studio (Universal) with...

Studio bosses are left wondering what went right as the science-fiction story brings home a surprise result
The winner
Reviews were mixed, and the early April release date suggested a movie falling short of the blockbuster premier league, but there was nothing puny about the opening-weekend box office for Oblivion: £3.36m, plus Wednesday/Thursday previews totaling £1.60m. The five-day £4.96m debut compares with £2.79m for GI Joe: Retaliation from a couple of weeks ago, and a previews-inflated £3.58m opening for star Tom Cruise's previous effort Jack Reacher in late December. Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski's earlier Tron: Legacy debuted with £1.97m back in 2010. Cruise also has a strong track record in the sci-fi genre. War of the Worlds debuted in July 2005 with £8.64m, and Minority Report in July 2002 with £4.51m.
Studios always review results for all their releases, and now Universal is in the happy position of wondering what went right with Oblivion.

Spring Breakers (18)
(Harmony Korine, 2012, Us) Selena Gomez, James Franco, Gucci Mane. 94 mins
The new American dream/nightmare of the endless beach party is both celebrated and satirised in Korine's woozy Florida tale. The story is fittingly loose – four naive teens turn to criminal means to fund their hedonism – but it's more of an experience: a dubstep-tracked collage of neon, Day-Glo and tanned flesh, all facilitated by Franco's fantastically watchable gangsta rapper.
A Late Quartet (15)
(Yaron Zilberman, 2012, Us) Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener. 106 mins
A respected New York string quartet is struck by an excess of issues here: terminal illness, infidelity, professional jealousy, you name it. Without the distinguished cast, its highbrow melodramas would seem ludicrous.

★★☆☆☆ Despite the best intentions, Marcus Markou's family affair Papadopoulos & Sons (2012) - made in conjunction with brother, Andrew, through Double M Films - was never likely to emulate the success here in the UK of Joel Zwick's hammy yet humorous Us comedy, My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). A far more restrained, London-based riches-to-rags parable, Markou's film strains to be both comic and touching, often missing its marks by some margin. Game of Thrones' Stephen Dillane heads up a relatively little-known cast as Harry Papadopoulos, a successful entrepreneur on the verge of losing everything.

A sincere north London comedy-drama exploring family relationships – amid kebab shop rivalry
Playwright-turned-director Marcus Markou's debut is a cheerful, foursquare comedy-drama along East is East lines. Stephen Dillane – an actor whose droll choices are always a pleasure to watch – gives it some class as Harry Papadopoulos, the north London comestibles magnate obliged to downsize when he finds that even an empire founded on taramasalata cannot survive a double-dip recession; Georges Corraface brings the energy as Harry's estranged brother, who sees reopening a chippy as a way of securing the clan's future. Rivalry with a Turkish kebab shop follows – Markou isn't beyond broad, crowdpleasing tactics – but it's set against a sincere exploration of the brothers' differences, and an ambitious attempt to rewrite Lear for laughter rather than tears. It's a throwback, but relaxed, sweet and funny with it: a first feature that makes an impression by not pushing too hard to make an impression.
