Paula Shugart is departing the Miss Universe Organization after 23 years as president, she revealed on Thursday night in El Salvador — where this year’s event is set to take place on Saturday. Shugart’s exit comes following news that Thailand-based Miss Universe owner Jkn Global Group had filed for bankruptcy in its country, but insiders said Shugart’s announcement was unrelated to that news and had been in the works for a long time prior to that news.
Shugart shared the news of her departure while on stage at Thursday night’s National Costume Show portion of the Miss Universe pageant.
“In my 25 years at Miss Universe, we expanded global reach for this iconic entertainment brand by focusing on telling the stories of these incredible women,” Shugart said in an exclusive statement to Variety.” But more important than numbers and metrics, I’ve learned what it means to truly be a transformational leader.

Amy Emmerich, chief content officer for Vice Media’s Refinery29, has exited the digital company, which has been unsettled by an investigation into its workplace culture and treatment of employees of color.

Vice Media is laying off 55 U.S. staffers and about 100 more internationally as it faces uncertainty due to Covid-19.
The moves, which follow a 10% workforce reduction in early 2019, are the result of a need to shore up the company’s digital business, CEO Nancy Dubuc announced Friday in a memo to employees.
“The reality is that some tough decisions had to be made primarily around our digital teams,” Dubuc wrote in the memo, which was provided to Deadline. “Currently, our digital organization accounts for around 50% of our headcount costs, but only brings in about 21% of our revenue. Looking at our business holistically, this imbalance needed to be addressed for the long-term health of our company.”
Dubuc added that 90% of roles in the digital operation were preserved through various efforts and the group will now be overseen by Jesse Angelo, Amy Emmerich, Cory Haik, and Hosi Simon.

Comedy Central and Refinery29 have signed a digital content partnership to produce two comedy series featuring an all-female lineup of comedians, Variety has learned exclusively.
Slated to premiere spring 2020, the series will be co-branded and distributed on both Comedy Central and Refinery29’s digital platforms. While neither series is being eyed for a linear run at present, a release at some point on the ViacomCBS-owned cable channel isn’t out of the question given that Comedy Central owns the rights, according to sources.
The first series, titled “Cc x R29: Taking the Stage,” is a short-form stand-up series featuring a curation of showcase clips from a lineup of comedians. The second, “Cc x R29: Speak Up,” will be a short-form storytelling series in which the comedians will share stories about speaking up and being heard.

Vice Media CEO Nancy Dubuc discussed the misconceptions about and momentum of the company as it navigates a restructuring and the acquisition of Refinery29.
Appearing at Fast Company’s Innovation Festival in New York on Tuesday, Dubuc delivered her first public comments on the $400 million Refinery merger since it closed the day before. “These two audiences match. Revenue diversity coming together works,” she said. “This is an acquisition not just for scale. These two brands come together and complement each other.”
The companies’ storytelling approach also has shared attitude and DNA, Dubuc said, even down to certain executives (she mentioned Refinery’s Amy Emmerich) having worked at both companies. On the advertising side, she said the unified brand teams have already gone on three new-business pitch meetings since the deal’s close.
Significant restructuring and layoffs are starting to enter the rear-view mirror, Dubuc said. Asked if the company’s...

Amazon’s big buys at the Sundance Film Festival no longer seem like the clear threat to traditional film distribution that they seemed to be a few years ago — and even the idea that streaming services are dangerous feels dated.
That was the key takeaway from TheWrap’s panel “Innovation in Indie Film: From Content Creation to Discovery,” presented Monday at the Sundance Film Festival by ChooseATL and Thea.
“The streaming services are good and as distributors. It’s fuzzy how you put movies out,” said Van Toffler, CEO of Gunpowder & Sky. He noted that Sundance “is much more diverse this year with the comedies and docs, and it’s more diverse to make content now because there are so many buyers and companies that have their own streaming platforms — it’s a good time to make stuff.”

For a female-focused business, that idea just wasn’t tenable, and Emmerich and scripted programming executive producer Shannon Gibson set out to launch their own program aimed at female creators.

The partners on Monday announced at Sundance a new season of the Shatterbox Anthology film series that backed Kristen Stewart’s directing debut Come Swim.
The series is designed to showcase the next cycle of female storytellers and is consistent with Refinery29’s mission to support female voices.
The filmmakers received creative support from the Sundance Institute’s Women At Sundance programme and the anthology will air on TV as well as on Refinery 29 and TNT’s social and digital platforms.
Shatterbox Anthology talent will also have the opportunity to potentially work with and develop creative projects for cable channel TNT, whose owner Turner recently invested in Refinery29.
