Twenty years ago, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s breakout hit The O.C., about a group of teens coming of age in Newport Beach, premiered on Fox. By the time the 27-episode first season aired its finale in the spring of 2004, the show was the highest-rated drama on TV among adults 18 to 34 and had catapulted its stars — whose characters were affectionately known as the “Core Four” — to massive, near-overnight popularity.
It wouldn’t be the first or last young adult series in the U.S. to generate a cultural frenzy. But the industry ecosystem that birthed and defined zeitgeisty YA shows like it — 22-episode drama series with largely white casts found through in-person auditions — is vanishing. As viewers have increasingly abandoned broadcast and cable TV, the linear networks these shows called home (Fox, The WB, Upn, The CW, MTV and Freeform) have also faced mergers, acquisitions, multiple rebrands or given...

The much-awaited return of the ghost detectives on the silver screen is finally available on Netflix, and the fans seem to love it. Based on the DC Comics characters of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, the Netflix series is created by Steve Yockey and it follows the story of two ghost detectives who decide not to ascent to their afterlives to stay on Earth and investigate the crimes involving the supernatural. So, if you loved the charm and supernatural shenanigans in Dead Boy Detectives here are some similar shows you should check out next.

Today, Netflix debuted the official trailer for Dead Boy Detectives, premiering globally on Netflix on Thursday, April 25.
The eclectic composition of characters, based on the beloved comics by Neil Gaiman and brought to life by co-showrunners Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz, provides the series with fun, whimsy, humor, and fantastical horror that all come together in perfectly imperfect harmony.
Try not to fall in love with the dead boy detectives and their crew in this trailer as they solve mystifying paranormal cases to the tune of a wonderfully nostalgic rendition of My Chemical Romance’s anthemic ode to the afterlife, “Welcome to the Black Parade.”
Do you have a pesky ghost haunting you? Has a demon stolen your core memories? You may want to ring the Dead Boy Detectives.

Sometimes the past just won’t let you go. In Netflix’s “Dead Boy Detectives,” ghosts wreak havoc and reckon with unfinished business, and it’s up to Edwin Payne (George Rextrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) to help them move on. The best friends are also a formidable detective agency where Edwin provides “the brains” and Charles provides “the brawn.”

Netflix has offered up the first peeks at its upcoming Dead Boy Detectives series.
The show, based on the Vertigo comics by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, stars George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri as Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, best friends — and ghosts — who help solve paranormal cases in the mortal realm.
At Netflix, Dead Boy Detectives will be part of the Sandman universe (the characters were introduced in Gaiman’s Sandman comics in the early 1990s) — but the series took a winding road to get there. It was initially developed for Max as part of the streamer’s former plans for its DC Universe, with Edwin and Charles making an appearance (although played by different actors) in season three of Doom Patrol.

The show, based on characters created for DC by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, was originally ordered to series at Max back in April 2022. However, it was reported earlier this year that it would be moving to Netflix due to the fact it did not fit the new direction for Max-DC content being spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Doom Patrol series finale.] Well, that seemed like a definite ending to Doom Patrol… for some of the characters, at least. The Max Original ended with Cliff (Brendan Fraser) dying, Rita (April Bowlby) in the afterlife, Larry (Matt Bomer) and Rama (Sendhil Ramamurthy) becoming the new sun (as the penultimate episode teased), Jane (Diane Guerrero) figuring things out and the entire underground now existing all at once as Kay as she joins Casey (Madeline Zima) in traveling in the spaceship, Vic (Joivan Wade) Cyborg 2.0 and helping Deric (Elijah Rashad Reed) with his class, and Rouge (Michelle Gomez) burning down the Ant Farm. Max Original Doom Patrol is in the final stretch of episodes — the last one drops November 9 — and the good news is that fans shouldn’t be left hanging at the end of it. “I refer to it differently depending on what mood I’m in, but I consider these characters character who are there forever and new chapter can begin whenever we are called upon,” showrunner and executive producer Jeremy Carver tells TV Insider. “I like to refer to this as an end of a chapter. I think we had enough of a heads up coming into this season that we may be heading into the end of a chapter, so we absolutely wrote it that way so that there would be a satisfying chapter close here for these four seasons.” That, of course, leads to the obvious question: What are the chances of getting to see that next chapter in some way?...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Doom Patrol Season 4 Episode 9, “Immortimas Patrol.”] Unsurprisingly, Doom Patrol pulls off a musical episode that’s not only very entertaining but also, to use showrunner and executive producer Jeremy Carver‘s own term, “indelicate” at times — and full of catchy songs. In other words, everything you love about this weird and wild show? This episode takes it up to another level and somehow makes it better. It all stems from Immortus (Charity Cervantes) creating an alternate reality in which she’s constantly adored (Immortimas Day is celebrated every day). Rouge (Michelle Gomez) is the first to realize something’s off; then she clues the others — Larry (Matt Bomer), Cliff (Brendan Fraser), Jane (Diane Guerrero), Vic (Joivan Wade), and Rita (April Bowlby) — in. Some are less willing to leave behind what seems like a better world, but by the end, they are back in their reality. “We hope a lot of...

Doom Patrol‘s final Big Bad is neither physically big nor technically bad, and that’s kind of the point.
The Max drama resumed its fourth season on Thursday with a wild premiere that finally put a face to a name, that name being (drumroll please…) Immortus! And that was only half of the surprise, as the face belonged to (let’s get another drumroll…) Isabel Feathers!

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Doom Patrol Season 4 Episodes 7, “Orqwith Patrol” and 8, “Fame Patrol.”] Doom Patrol is finally back with its last episodes, the first two of which (out now) see the titular group escape from Orqwith but then having to deal with the problem that is Immortus (Charity Cervantes’ Isabel Feathers!) being free. And while the world was interested in hearing about where Isabel has been — which she carefully shared on a talk show after rewinding time when she got a bit too Immortus-y — the spotlight was firmly on the Doom Patrol by the end of the eighth episode, with a parade celebrating them. Needless to say, Immortus was not happy and let out a cosmic blast. “I think the emergence of Immortus creates a whole new set of wild and uncertain (and absurdly delightful) obstacles,” executive producer and showrunner Jeremy Carver tells TV Insider. “But it also creates a deeper thinking amongst our team,...

With recent scheduling decisions at Max, there have been plenty of questions surrounding whether completed episodes of shows will see the light of day.
Production on Doom Patrol Season 4 has been completed for some time now, with the first half concluding in January 2023.
Many thought the episodes would materialize after the conclusion of Titans Season 4, but with Max nixing several projects, despite production being complete on some, there have been questions about when the show could return.
James Gunn responded to a fan of the show on Threads who wondered whether the final episodes will air, and it's good news.
Gunn, who oversees DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, said that he's "not focused on day to day TV scheduling," but he'd be surprised if "completed episodes" of the show "are not going to be released."
He later followed up with the following:

DC’s Dead Boy Detectives will do its snooping on a different streamer. Reports indicate the drama is moving from HBO Max, where the show was developed, to Netflix. Sources say the show is changing venues because it doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu. The duo is retooling the DC’s representation across film, television, and video games, ensuring all the pieces fit together to create a cohesive universe of content. The duo’s plans include five inter-connected shows and Peacemaker on HBO Max. At the very least, Dead Boy Detectives is moving to another platform instead of being canceled.
The Dead Boys Detectives series revolves around Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, two dead British teenagers, and their alive friend, Crystal Palace. A press release from HBO Max described it as “a lot like a vintage detective series — only darker and on acid.

Dead Boy Detectives is moving platforms.
The DC drama based on the Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner comics has been sold from HBO Max, the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer that developed the show, to Netflix. Producers Warner Bros. Television shopped the drama after sources say the series didn’t fit with the new chapter of content that DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran are building for the comic book powerhouse. That plan includes five inter-connected shows that will live alongside Peacemaker on HBO Max. Also contributing to the show’s move between platforms is the fact that HBO Max would not have been able to market the show until 2024, with execs at the streamer blessing producers to take the show out elsewhere.
Reps for Netflix, Warners and Berlanti did not immediately respond to The Hollywood Reporter‘s request for comment.

Future Of DC Universe and Upcoming Slate From DC Studios Reveals First Chapter – ‘Gods and Monsters’
DC Fans received big news on Tuesday when James Gunn announced plans for DC Studios.
James Gunn and Peter Safran have unveiled the first ten interconnected DC Studios projects—five movies and five HBO Max TV series. All ten of them are set within the same shared universe and will frequently share characters. However, while not included below, there will be films set outside the shared continuity—like the already announced Joker: Folie à Deux from director Todd Phillips and Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman sequel.
“The Dcu’s a multiverse, but we’re going to be focusing on one universe from that multiverse,” explains Safran. “And if something isn’t Dcu, we’re going to make that very clear. So, strictly adult fare like Todd Phillips’ Joker, or kids animation like Teen Titans Go!, we’re going to make it very clear that those are DC Elseworlds, just the...

After teasing that he and fellow DC Studios CEO Peter Safran today began talking up some of the movies and shows we can expect. And that includes new versions of Batman, Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern and more. Watch the announcement here, and read the full breakdown below.
Gunn started by confirming that the existing DC movies still to be released — Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom – will all still make it to cinemas, with The Flash and its universe-rebooting nature proving key to helping to usher in the new paradigm. They will lead into what Gunn and Safran are calling 'Gods And Monsters', effectively the first chunk of the first part of the plan. It'll be a mix of TV (both animated and live-action) and movies, with games tying in as needed.
So what can we expect? Gunn talked up 10 initial titles.

The highly-anticipated second season of “Peacemaker” has been delayed, DC co-ceo James Gunn revealed during a presentation on the upcoming Dcu slate that TheWrap attended along with a small group of reporters.
Gunn said that he’s been too busy writing a new “Superman” movie and the upcoming animated DC series “Creature Commandos” and, as a result, “Peacemaker” Season 2 got pushed. But not to worry — a previously announced spinoff based on Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller will help kick off a new era of Dcu storytelling.
“Viola is still playing Waller and she has Team Peacemaker in this,” Gunn noted. “This is really a continuation from Peacemaker.”
“Waller” will be written by Christal Henry (“Watchmen”) and Jeremy Carver (“Doom Patrol”) and executive produced by Gunn and Safran.

The future is finally here for DC fans. After years of false starts from a parade of creatives, and months of teases, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran finally shared their vision for DC movies and TV series going forward, christened, simply enough as the Dcu. The pair outlined what they called “the first part of the first chapter” of the Dcu, with that first chapter known as “Gods and Monsters.” It’s a combination of five films and five HBO Max series which will have story elements that weave between each other, and ultimately lay the foundation for a new, cohesive DC Universe.
Of course, it’s not as simple as that (it never is). There are still the four DC movies coming out this year, which Gunn and Safran are playing coy about, including who will stick around as their current characters. However, Gunn said that...

James Gunn has made good on his promise to announce his first projects since taking over as the head of DC Studios with Peter Safran. James Gunn’s official DC Slate was revealed at a private press event on the Warner Bros lot in Burbank that out own JimmyO was lucky enough to attend yesterday. In his opening remarks, Gunn mentioned the plan was to go from Shazam: Fury of the Gods to The Flash to Blue Beetle to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to (gasp) Superman. And indeed, the Man of Steel will be returning in a film called Superman: Legacy (to be written by Gunn himself) which is due out on July 11th, 2025, and will be the first feature to be made by Gunn’s group. No director or cast announced yet. The Batman – Part II will also be a 2025 release, with Gunn confirming an October 3rd, 2025 release date.

A new era of DC has arrived. DC Studios co-chairpeople and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their initial slate of new projects to TheWrap and a small group of reporters on Monday, explaining how this brand new slate of movies and TV shows makes up a “unified” approach to DC storytelling while unveiling some exciting details about the direction DC will take going forward.
Described as “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters,” this initial slate of 10 projects will introduce audiences to a completely unified approach to DC movies and shows, in contrast to the aborted Zack Snyder-steered series of DC films and various self-contained universes like Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.
Almost everything coming up – starting with a new “Superman” movie – will take place in the same universe and will mark a cohesive piece of storytelling.

A new Batman movie without Robert Pattinson (but featuring Bruce Wayne’s murderous son). A Superman movie on the release schedule (mark your calendars for July 11, 2025). A Game of Thrones-style drama set on Wonder Woman’s home island of Themyscira (Amazonian palace intrigue). And an animated series already in production (Creature Commandos … wait, what?).
That’s just part of what will be coming to theaters and TV screens as part of DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new slate.
The pair have been busy in the three months since taking over and combining the film and television slate of DC properties, including live-action and animation as well as gaming. They revamped the way the movie and TV sides do business, cutting ties with projects and creators. A writers room was formed to find an overall story that will launch a unified DC Universe. After four glorious seasons, HBO Max's "Doom Patrol" is nearing its end. Ever since its debut on the ill-fated streaming service DC Universe, the ragtag team of superheroes has captured our hearts and broken them more than a few times. From the ensemble cast of characters to the bats*** crazy villains they come across, "Doom Patrol" earned its place among the very best in the genre. With its impending cancellation, we can't help but already mourn what will soon be lost. However, like everything else in the superhero world, nothing truly stays dead. Seeing a good thing come to an end is never easy, but maybe things could be alleviated in the upcoming Dcu.
Soon after the cancellation of "Doom Patrol," some fans started to point fingers at the newly-anointed leaders of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran. Although they are now in charge of the future slate of DC projects across film,...

Unfortunately, HBO Max is adding a couple more DC shows to its ever-growing list of casualties. Titans and Doom Patrol have officially been canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery. Both shows still have another half of a season to air on HBO Max at a yet-to-be-determined date, but these season 4 episodes will serve as their final chapters.
While some viewers immediately assumed the newly appointed heads of DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran were to blame for the cancellations as they try to figure out how to move forward with the on screen DC Universe, Gunn took to Twitter to let fans know that this wasn’t their decision.
“The decision to end the series precedes us,” Gunn wrote on Twitter. “But I certainly wish the best for the talented group of creators, actors, and the rest of the crew that produced both shows.”

Following the departure of Walter Hamada from Warner Bros. Discovery, DC Films became DC Studios and the company appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new co-chairs of the all-new DC Universe. However, when they stepped into these new positions, the duo weren't just given the reins to the cinematic universe containing fan-favorite characters such as Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. They were also brought in to oversee the television and animation projects based on the vast history of DC Comics.

Even superheroes can’t defeat the looming threat of a series finale. “Titans” and “Doom Patrol,” two live-action series based on DC Comic book characters, will end after their respective ongoing fourth seasons, IndieWire has confirmed.
The two series have an interesting development history, beginning as original programs for DC Universe, a streaming platform focused on superhero content, launching their first seasons in 2018 (for “Titans”) and 2019 (for “Doom Patrol”). After HBO Max launched, DC Universe was rebooted as a free comics subscription service, and the shows moved to the new streamer. “Titans” premiered its fourth and now final season this November, while “Doom Patrol’s” launched in December; both seasons consists of 12 episodes split into two six-episode parts, with the final batches of episodes set to premiere at unannounced dates.

HBO Max is ending some more popular drama series.
According to Deadline, Titans and Doom Patrol are both ending after four seasons each on the streaming service.
The good news?
Reports state that producers of both shows knew the end could be near with the current unrest at HBO Max following the Warner Bros. Discovery merger.
As a result, both shows are expected to conclude with season finales that can function as series-enders.
"While these will be the final seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings," an HBO Max spokesperson said to Deadline.
""We are grateful to Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for making such thrilling, action-packed, heartfelt series."
"We thank Titans showrunner Greg Walker, executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Richard Hatem, and the team at Weed Road Pictures.
