Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

Wak! Wak! Fans who wanted Matt Reeves’ The Batman to lean into the violence of Gotham City could be in for a treat when The Penguin arrives on Max. The spinoff series, starring Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, could find the classic villain breaking more than bones as he continues to waddle toward the top of Gotham’s criminal food chain. Speaking with MovieZine, Farrell said The Penguin is gnarlier than Reeves’ PG-13 Batman film and should be considered “incredibly violent.”
“It was a long and really wonderful experience,” Farrell said about filming The Penguin series. “It’s dark; that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark. It’s really heavy, I think— it certainly was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun, I had an amazing time doing it. It’s incredibly violent. It’s one man’s rise...

Colin Farrell returns to Gotham City as Oz Cobb, aka Oswald Cobblepot, in the trailer for “The Penguin,” a spinoff series of “The Batman” coming this fall to Max.
“The Penguin” takes place immediately following the events of DC’s 2022 blockbuster, tracing Cobblepot’s rise to power in the Gotham underworld as he becomes one of the most prominent villains in the “Batman” universe. Farrell gives a classic gangster monologue throughout the trailer, which slowly ramps up the violence and gunfights in Gotham City’s seedy underground.
“When I was a kid, there was a gangster, real old-school type. Rex Calabrese. He was a big deal. He helped people. He saw you on the street, he’d call out to you,” Cobblepot narrates in the trailer. “When I was 14 or something, he has a heart attack and dies, still holding a cigar. In my neighborhood, they throw a parade in his honor.

Can it really be 20 years since “The O.C.” premiered on Fox? The young actors of the series, Benjamin McKenzie, Adam Brody, Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson quickly became in-demand stars and the theme song “California” by Phantom Planet became a top ten hit in several countries while also reaching 35 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.

On the surface, the "John Wick" franchise seems like nothing more than a star vehicle for Keanu Reeves. However, the films have surprisingly complex world-building. The underworld of assassins is governed by strict rules; it is a business, after all. With each sequel, the action scenes get bigger and the rules gain more clauses.
In the first film, the extent of this was the Continental Hotel; a hub for assassins in NYC run by Winston (Ian McShane) and his concierge Charon (Lance Reddick). On the Continental's grounds, no business may be conducted with the penalty of execution. In "Chapter 2," we learn the system is global and run by a "High Table" of assassins. "Chapter 2" demonstrates this by showing workers in different offices across the globe relaying information to each other.
We also see the punishment of "excommunicado" status when Wick violates Continental rules. In "Chapter 3," the High-Table's Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon...

Of all the many villains in Gotham City's menacing menagerie, the Penguin is one of the strangest. The character of Oswald Cobblepot, the stout and menacing crime lord with a penchant for penguins, has been portrayed by a handful of actors, including Burgess Meredith ("Batman" '66), Robin Lord Taylor ("Gotham"), and Wayne Knight ("Harley Quinn"), but the two most people think of as the Dark Knight villain are Danny DeVito and Colin Farrell. DeVito played the Penguin in Tim Burton's "Batman Returns" in 1992 and Farrell played the character in Matt Reeves's "The Batman" in 2022. With 30 years between the characters and two very different takes, it's really tough to tell which Penguin was truly the greatest.
In a Vanity Fair polygraph interview with his daughter, Lucy DeVito, to promote their animated series "Little Demon," Danny DeVito was asked which Penguin performance he thought was better, between him and Collin Farrell.

This post contains spoilers for "The Batman."
While Matt Reeves' "The Batman" was pretty much a triumph on the whole, it's not hard to deny that Colin Firth's Penguin was a decisive highlight. The big wigs at Warner Bros. must have thought so too, as the character will soon be heading up his very own series on HBO Max. The spin-off will apparently take place just a week after the events of "The Batman," which ended with the death of mafia don Carmine Falcone. "The Penguin" will likely address the power vacuum that Falcone's death leaves behind in Gotham, and follow Oswald Cobblepot's rise through the ranks of Gotham's underworld in order to take that power for himself.
Farrell himself has cited the HBO prison drama "Oz" as a point of inspiration for "The Penguin." That series followed the shifting tides in a fictional men's prison — fittingly named the...

It's that time of the month when I have to deliver the unfortunate news that a collection of your favorite movies and television shows are leaving Netflix. I'm including the holdovers currently sitting in your watchlist that you swore you would watch eight months ago. If you haven't already, you best get to it because at the end of September, the streaming behemoth is going to eliminate the choice for you.

Licenses for all of these projects expire, which leaves the streamer no choice but to purge it from the site. It happens! Netflix can be home to its own share of bad press, but at least the movies and television shows leaving the platform don't come directly from their own catalog of original titles, unlike some folks. Iconic Batman villain The Penguin could be getting his own spinoff series on HBO Max, according to reports from Deadline and Variety. Colin Farrell is set to portray the DC Comics supervillain in Matt Reeve’s upcoming feature The Batman and has apparently been approached to head up the proposed spinoff series, though a deal has yet to be signed. While the project is in its very early stages, Deadline reports that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. writer Lauren LeFranc is on board as showrunner with Reeves and Dylan Clark executive producing. The Penguin, aka tuxedo-wearing mobster Oswald Cobblepot, is one of Batman’s most enduring enemies and has been portrayed on screen by Burgess Meredith in the 1960s TV series Batman, Danny DeVito in Batman Returns, and Robin Lord Taylor in Gotham. Farrell’s Penguin in The Batman will portray the disfigured crime lord before he became the more familiar crime kingpin.

Sources also say that Lauren LeFranc is attached to write the script for the project, which is in its very early stages.
The show would supposedly delve into The Penguin’s rise to power in the Gotham criminal underworld. “The Batman” director Matt Reeves and the film’s producer Dylan Clark would executive produce the Penguin series under their 6th & Idaho and Dylan Clark Productions banners respectively. Warner Bros. Television would produce.
Reps for HBO Max declined to comment.

Spoiler Warning: Do not read if you haven’t seen Season 1, Episode 3 of “Loki,” streaming now on Disney Plus.
Marvel Studios has its first official Lgbtqia+ superhero — or, depending on your point of view, supervillain.
On the latest episode of the Disney Plus series “Loki,” Tom Hiddleston’s titular god of mischief confirms what had been long established in the pages of Marvel comics, that he is bisexual.
It happens during a conversation Loki has with a Loki “variant” named Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), who revealed herself at the end of last week’s episode just as she launched her grand scheme to wreak havoc on the Time Variance Authority. As they sit on a train waiting to arrive at a critical destination, the discussion turns to love. Sylvie says she’s been in “a serious, long-distance relationship with a postman” while she skitters through time and across apocalypses to avoid detection by the Tva.

A new teaser trailer for You Season 2 gives us our first glimpse of Joe Goldberg's new identity.
Joe takes on Los Angeles culture, noting that “everyone is pretending to be somebody they’re not,” including himself.
If you watch You online, you know Joe's time in New York ended with the murder of Beck, the woman who was the object of his affection during You Season 1.
On You Season 2, the villain has relocated to Los Angeles, and it's not the type of place he likes to be associated with.
“Love has taken me to some pretty dark places,” Joe says. “But Los Angeles has to be as dark as it gets.”
He enters an L.A. coffee shop and is quick to judge every single person in the establishment. There's a social media influencer, and even an aspiring screenwriter.
He then walked up to the barista and unveiled his new identity.

Warner Bros. surprised comic book movie fans November 5 with the announcement Colin Farrell was joining the cast of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” as the villainous Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. The character was made famous on the big screen by Danny DeVito in Tim Burton’s 1992 superhero film “Batman Returns.” Robin Lord Taylor also memorably played the Penguin on Fox’s television drama “Gotham.” DeVito starred opposite Farrell in Burton’s live-action “Dumbo” earlier this year, so it’s not surprising the former Penguin is giving his enthusiastic blessing to the new Penguin.
“Colin’s a great actor,” DeVito recently told ScreenRant while promoting “Jumanji: The Next Level.” “He’s a good friend of mine. I’ve known him for many years and I think he’s going to do a great job as the Penguin. It’s going to be really interesting to see his take on it.”

Netflix has an after-Christmas present for fans of the Penn Badgley drama You. Season 2 of the former Lifetime series will premiere on December 26, exclusively on the streaming service. Check out the new key art below.
You follows bookstore manager Joe Goldberg (Badgley). In the freshman season, which was based on Caroline Kepnes’ bestselling novel and aired on Lifetime, Goldberg becomes obsessed with his customer Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), using social media and the Internet to stalk her.
The show’s sophomore run is based loosely on the author’s second book in the series, titled Hidden Bodies, and will stream under the Netflix Originals banner. It will follow Goldberg to Los Angeles, where he meets Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), an aspiring chef that isn’t into social media like his previous leading lady.

Netflix has a holiday gift for fans of You.
The hit thriller will stream its entire second season on Thursday, December 26.
You Season 1 followed Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), a man who became a little too obsessed with a woman named Beck (Elizabeth Lail.) The former stalked her throughout the entire season, before murdering her.
It was a harrowing season of TV, but there has to be more, right?
You Season 1 also wrapped with the revelation that Joe's ex-girlfriend Candace was still very much alive, even though there were strong hints that she had been killed along the way.
Joe left a trail of bodies in his wake, so it makes sense that the second season would move the action to another coast.

In a departure from tradition, the actor rumoured to have waddled into the frame as the villain in Matt Reeves’ forthcoming film has leading-man looks
In many ways, Colin Farrell would be a surprising choice to play Oswald Cobblepot, Aka the Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman – though the Hollywood trade press is reporting he is the likely candidate. Farrell is neither squat and rotund like the version portrayed by Danny DeVito in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, nor slight and awkward like the memorable Penguin played on TV by Robin Lord Taylor in Gotham. Many observers had expected the role to go to Josh Gad, the Frozen and Book of Mormon stalwart who campaigned heavily for the role on Twitter and seemed the perfect choice, should Reeves be headed in an operatic, larger-than-life direction for his reinvention of the Batman myth.

The Batman may have found its Penguin. Reports emerged yesterday that revealed Colin Farrell is currently in talks to join the ever-growing all-star cast of Matt Reeves’ reboot of the Caped Crusader’s universe. It seems negotiations are still ongoing, but it looks like the Fantastic Beasts and Dumbo star could be our new Oswald Cobblepot. But how could Farrell look in the part? Thankfully, digital artist Boss Logic is on the case.
His latest piece dresses the Irish actor in the Penguin’s signature top hat and monocle. Despite the gentlemanly attire, the pic gives off the feel of Farrell maybe being a tougher version of the villain than is traditional, perhaps leaning more into depicting him as a cutthroat crime boss.

"Either we're sliding between parallel realities... or it's a simulation, and it's glitching out." Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for a trippy, indie sci-fi thriller titled The Mandela Effect, the latest made by filmmaker David Guy Levy. For those unfamiliar, the "Mandela Effect" is the theory that people collectively misremember something (the best example being: The Berenstain Bears). The odd feeling of being wrong makes some start to question reality or believe in alternate timelines. This plays with that concept and takes it even further, throwing in some The Matrix and Source Code vibes. The film follows a man who becomes obsessed with facts and events that have been collectively misremembered by thousands of people. Believing the phenomena to be the symptom of something much larger, his obsession eventually leads him to question reality itself. The film stars Charlie Hofheimer, Aleksa Palladino, Robin Lord Taylor, Madeleine McGraw, and Clarke Peters.

The Penguin is one of the most iconic villains in Batman’s rogues gallery, but he’s fallen by the wayside in adaptations of the mythos in recent years. The last time he was on the big screen was in 1992’s Batman Returns, as played by Danny DeVito. Robin Lord Taylor’s popular performance in TV’s Gotham might’ve helped revitalize the character, though, as Warner Bros. seems to have big plans for Oswald Cobblepot in the coming years.

Considering how Gotham concluded its five-season run this past spring, I’m not sure if I’m ready to think about any sort of primetime rival just yet. On the other hand, I’m totally down for DC continuing it as a comic book series just as they once did with Smallville, but that’s a discussion we’ve already had at length.
Regardless, nothing can stop diehard fans from wanting more or dreaming of what the future might bring. In fact, when the cast reunited for a panel conducted at DragonCon in Atlanta, they were asked about the possibility of a revival down the line.
Here’s what Harvey Bullock himself, Donal Logue, had to say when confronted with that question:

Gotham recently wrapped up its fifth and final season with a time jump and the reveal of Batman, albeit briefly. Although the series itself varied in quality, it was never afraid to gamble on more adventurous storylines and challenge its strong leading cast with multiple roles. When Gotham screened its pilot episode at conventions, I watched with fascination, because it showed such promise as a moody, atmospheric take on the pervasive corruption that created the antibody of The Batman. Sure, it wasn’t entirely based on eighty years of canon, but nothing could do that, so I was prepared.
I stopped watching with regularity halfway through the second season because it stopped being what was promised and became something else entirely. It was a ham-fisted, over-the-top camp take on a modern-day comic, more beholden to the ABC Batman series than the comics.
With each successive season, the twists came faster, the characters stopped making sense, and internal logic was found only in the dictionary. This was a manic Gotham City, where the line between good and evil, moral and corrupt, quality and crap was blurred with every scene.

With each successive season, the twists came faster, the characters stopped making sense, and internal logic was found only in the dictionary. This was a manic Gotham City, where the line between good and evil, moral and corrupt, quality and crap was blurred with every scene.

In the eyes of this lifelong Batman fan, Gotham will forever remain a wonderful part of the character’s enduring mythos. I’m aware of how a percentage of you scoff at how it retold the Dark Knight’s beginnings – and those of his villains, for that matter – but it’s important that creators keep things fresh. After all, our hero couldn’t have gotten this far if everybody rehashed the same tales over and over again.
Over the five years that Gotham had been on the air, I couldn’t help making comparisons to Smallville in various news articles and reviews. And at a time like this, it’s hard not making another one. I say that because while both shows had a similar goal in fleshing out the backstory of a beloved icon, Smallville covered much more ground during its ten-season lifespan. On the plus side, like Smallville,...

Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight is going to have his hands full in his first movie on the job, as Matt Reeves’ The Batman is set to feature a whole host of Gotham’s greatest villains. We know that there’ll be at least six or seven from the Caped Crusader’s rogues gallery appearing in the film, with the line-up including Catwoman, Riddler and Two-Face, among others.
In fact, the Penguin is widely reported to be one of the most significant players in the group and whoever’s cast as Oswald Cobblepot could be key to The Batman‘s success. So, it’s no surprise that we’re hearing that Warner Bros. is looking at a wide range of actors to portray the iconic villain. We Got This Covered has previously reported that Josh Gad and Nicholas Hoult are on the studio’s wishlist for the role and now,...

Last week brought the news that Robert Pattinson is Warner Bros.’ top choice for the next Caped Crusader, though subsequent reports have clarified that he’s not locked in just yet for Matt Reeves’ The Batman. One prospective foe for the Dark Knight is already sizing up the former Twilight star though and thinks he can take him.
Josh Gad has long been campaigning on social media to play the part of the Penguin in The Batman and, following Pattinson’s supposed casting, he returned to the topic on Twitter to comment on the situation. The Frozen actor shared Variety’s write-up of the story and added the caption: “Eh, I could take him.”
Gad’s interest in bringing Oswald Cobblepot to life has gone on for a couple of years now and, luckily for him, there’s a very real chance he could end up portraying the iconic villain.
