“Delhi Crime” creator Richie Mehta’s Prime Video series “Poacher” is the first time Los Angeles-based QC Entertainment has ventured into India.
Led by partners Sean McKittrick, Raymond Mansfield and Edward H. Hamm Jr., QC – which stands for Quality Control – backed Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning “Get Out” and “Us” and Spike Lee’s Oscar, BAFTA and Cannes-winning “BlacKkKlansman,” among many other successful ventures. Set up as a one-stop shop, QC develops, physically produces, finances productions and handles sales and distribution.
Based on true events, Amazon original “Poacher” unearths the largest ivory poaching ring in Indian history. It bowed at Sundance 2023. The process began with Mehta’s agents at Gersh trying to introduce him to producers who had funding and had a reputation for being hands-on and who were transparent and collaborative. Filmmaker, actor, chef and television personality Eddie Huang (“Boogie,” “Fresh Off the Boat”) has signed on to direct a new documentary exploring the rise and surprising fall of Vice Media.
In a dramatic turn of events, the digital media company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May after boasting a valuation of $5.7 billion in 2017. Earlier this month, Vice Media Group announced a new restructuring plan and layoffs in the wake of its bankruptcy and $350 million asset sale.
Huang has an unique perspective on the story: for four seasons, he hosted “Huang’s World” on Vice, which chronicled his travels around the world to learn about local history, culture and food.
“For the majority of my late-20s and 30s, I loved Vice,” Huang says in a statement announcing the project. “It gave a generation of talent the opportunity to make things they didn’t have anywhere else.”

As a family-based show, the delightful Fresh Off the Boat TV show addresses a lot of hard-hitting themes about family. It also does this with other equally important themes. However, most of...

In the latest bid to break out of the mid-agency pack, APA has formed a strategic partnership with Europa Content, the boutique literary and production company founded by Marc Gerald.
The goal is to expand APA’s intellectual property and media rights division led by Steve Fisher and Debbie Deuble Hill and to increase resources for both APA and Europa Content clients and creators across all media.
Having access to a publishing house has been a key engine of growth for many agencies, allowing for cross-company collaborations and access to content and intellectual property. APA sees it as a next step as it seeks to position itself apart from the mid-agency level and attempts to position itself as an alternative to top-tier agencies such as CAA, UTA and WME.
“We are thrilled to expand our shared business with Marc and his incredible team at Europa Content,” said Kyle Loftus, head of content development at APA.

Squelching sounds radiate over a dark screen as we fade in on a humanoid creature chowing down on a victim’s throat. After pulling away and exposing an inhumanly long tongue, the creature begins to gag, vomiting up a small black bird. So begins Kenneth Dagatan‘s In My Mother’s Skin, a horror fairy tale that will undoubtedly draw comparisons to Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 masterpiece Pan’s Labyrinth, but has a much more sinister side in store for audiences who are willing to sit through its more deliberately paced plot machinations.
Set in the Philippines at the end of World War II, In My Mother’s Skin follows the story of Tala (Felicity Kyle Napuli), a 14-year-old daughter of a textile merchant who lives in a war-worn colonial house with her sickly mother Ligaya (Beauty Gonzalez) and younger brother Bayani (James Mavie Estrella). Under suspicion of stealing Japanese gold, Tala’s...

Believe it or not, non-Jeopardy! viewers, but Celebrity Jeopardy! is a real thing and not just a classic series of SNL skits.
America’s favorite quiz show has been inviting celebrities on to try their hand at trivia since its ninth season in 1992. And yes, like in the aforementioned SNL skits, the questions are usually a bit “dumbed down” from the usual games. Still, many celebrities over the years have revealed themselves to be secret brainiacs with their surprising performance on the grueling game. Comedians like Cheech Marin, athletes like Aaron Rodgers, and actors like Jane Kaczmarek have all brought home some serious money for their respective charities.
Now, in its 39th season (and it second after the death of iconic original host Alex Trebek), Jeopardy! is going to give Celebrity Jeopardy! another go. This time, however, the stakes and scopes are much greater. Instead of being isolated to only a week within Jeopardy!

“It was always white people in school that were like, ‘Oh, I love “Catcher in the Rye,” I love Holden Caulfield,’” says Huang. “And I’m like, well, let me present you with a quite unlikable Asian character and see if you love him in the same way.”
“Boogie” is the coming-of-age story of Alfred “Boogie” Chin (Taylor Takahashi), a teenage basketball phenom in Queens, New York, with ambitions to make it to the NBA. He struggles with on-court rivals, his identity as a Chinese American and the pressure from his parents to earn a full-ride scholarship to an elite university, all the while navigating his first experience with love. The film was released via Focus Features in March.
“All of us kind of suck as teens,” Huang says. “None of us are really that good at being people yet.

Variety will bestow its inaugural Voice of Inspiration Award to filmmaker Eddie Huang at the Reel Works 20th anniversary gala.
The honor will be presented each year to a creative who is using their platform to tell interesting stories and inspire others. This year’s award will be presented May 26 in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of New York’s Reel Works, the organization that matches teens one-on-one with professional filmmaker mentors to tell their stories and have their voices heard.
“It was a really big surprise; I’m honored,” Huang said. “It means a lot to be recognized by peers and people who appreciate. I’m just a dude and, while I’ve done a lot of work, I’ve always felt outside of the town. I came at it from a weird way. I grew up in Orlando, Fla. I kind of became known for selling sandwiches. We mourn the loss of eight individuals, including six Asian American women, gunned down in Atlanta on March 16, a tragedy has catalyzed discussions of the racist and sexist stereotypes of Asian American women.
Stereotypes of Asian American women do not exist in a vacuum. Media portrayals of Asian American women and men play a part in how Asian American women are viewed. Part of our healing process must be reckoning with what contributed to conditions that led to these brutal murders.
Coverage surrounding the deaths in Atlanta has reiterated the characterizations of Asian American women that are painful and common. For example, Shaila Dewan argued in The New York Times that, “Asian-American women have long been stereotyped as sexually submissive, portrayed in popular culture as exotic ‘lotus blossoms’. ” Nadia Kim, in a recent op-ed in Public Seminar, wrote, “That six of his victims were East Asian American women fits into...

Eddie Huang is the true definition of a multi-hyphenate in Hollywood. We’re talking someone that is a famous chef and restauranteur, an author of a best-selling memoir, which was turned into a critically-acclaimed sitcom, “Fresh Off the Boat,” a TV show host of travel and cooking shows, and now a writer-director of a feature film, “Boogie.” And according to Huang, all that other stuff has been leading to the making of “Boogie” and his arrival as a feature filmmaker.

Great news for AMC which threw open the doors to its Century City and Burbank locations Monday after a year of being shutdown due to Covid restrictions:
The No. 1 circuit’s Burbank location sold out 22 of its 32 showtimes, while Century City sold out 18 of its 30 showtimes yesterday. Remember, capacity is capped at 25%. But still, a good start as the motion picture industry looks to get the No. 1 box office market back in business.
As we told you, Boogie filmmaker Eddie Huang celebrated the reopening of L.A. theaters by coming out to Century City last night to introduce his movie, and took photos with fans.
However, if you’re in Burbank tonight, you’ll find the AMC Burbank 16 is closed. Nothing to be alarmed about, as a spokesperson for the exhibitor tells Deadline tonight:
“Prior to opening today, the theater’s water heater, which provides hot water to the restrooms and concession area,...

‘Long Weekend’ Opens In Theaters To Add Coins To Specialty Box Office; ‘Come True’ And ‘Dutch’ Debut
Theaters are beginning to open up on both coasts and the specialty box office life is starting to get some shine with each passing week. Things are slowly yet surely are gravitating to something a little more — dare I say — normal?
This weekend, the Stage 6 Films rom-com Long Weekend from director Steve Basilone played in 814 theaters. The pic starring Finn Wittrock and Zoë Chao debuted with an estimated $245K with a per-theater average of $300.
Other new theatrical releases this weekend included the IFC Films’ Come True. The sleep-study-gone-wrong sci-fi thriller from filmmaker Anthony Scott Burns and starring Julia Sarah Stone played in 96 theaters across the country to earn an estimated $27.5K with an average of $671.
The drama Dutch from Preston A. Whitmore II, also posted its box office numbers, debuting in 202 theaters and is projected to earn $135,618 with an average of $671.

Disney’s animated adventure “Raya and the Last Dragon” remained victorious at the domestic box office, collecting $5.5 million from 2,163 venues over the weekend.
Those ticket sales, representing a 35% decline in its second weekend of release, push its overall total to $15.8 million domestically. “Raya and the Last Dragon” has generated another $36 million at the international box office for a global haul of $52.6 million. The family film is also available to rent on Disney Plus, the company’s streaming service, for an extra $30 fee.
In traditional times, movie theater operators would likely refuse to showcase a film that is also streaming online. But these days, new releases are few and far between and film exhibitors are happy to offer customers what they can. Many are optimistic that a moviegoing revival could be on the horizon because theaters in Los Angeles were given permission to reopen for the first time in nearly a year.

After winning a Golden Globe, numerous critics circle accolades as well as SAG Award, Independent Spirit Award and Critics Choice nominations, Minari has taken its success overseas as the A24 American family drama has opened at number one in South Korea.
Minari has banked an estimated $2.2 million in South Korea, earning more than double of Raya and the Last Dragon in the marketplace. It is the biggest opening in the territory for an American film since Soul which earned $2.5M.
The Lee Isaac Chung-directed film starring Steven Yeun is in good company as it has outgrossed the total cumulative gross in South Korea of previous Oscar contenders like The Favourite ($1.3M) and Spotlight ($2.1M). It is also on the way to surpass Green Book’s total gross of $3M.

The box office is heading in the right direction. This may have been the best weekend at theaters in almost a year. And initial signs are that even with reduced capacities, reopened New York City theaters responded encouragingly.
With both “Raya and the Last Dragon” (Disney) and “Tom & Jerry” (Warner Bros.) grossed over $6 million, the top 10 grossed over $23 million, with the total take over $24 million. That is the same as December 25-27 (normally a massive weekend). This was also the best year-to-year performance since March, with business down “only” 76 percent compared to most weeks closer to 90 percent.
Fact is: this is a low bar to exceed. Why? With the second week of Warners’ animation franchise reboot, and especially with the release of the first Disney animated film in theaters in over a year, along with the New York openings, a better performance seemed possible.
Most significant is the anemic showing of “Raya.

New York City movie theaters welcomed back customers for the first time in nearly a year this weekend. And yet some high profile new releases still struggled to sell tickets, a sign that a box office revival may not be in the cards for a few months.
Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon,” a computer-animated fantasy adventure, opened to $8.6 million from 2,045 screens. That failed to match the impressive (for a pandemic) debut of “Tom & Jerry,” which earned $14.1 million last weekend, providing a ray of hope to the long-suffering exhibition sector. “Raya and the Last Dragon” was also made available to Disney Plus subscribers for a $30 fee, a method that the company previously deployed with “Mulan.” Though a fraction of what a big-budgeted, family movie would make in pre-covid times, “Raya” did earn enough to capture the top spot on domestic box office charts. More Love & Basketball: Huang’s Debut Goes Through the Motions
Eddie Huang, producer of “Fresh Off the Boat,” makes his directorial debut with Boogie, a familiar coming-of-age narrative which features a pair of fine lead performances and a striking combination of representation. Some finely pitched humor assists in alleviating a dramatic arch which otherwise plays by the books, but there’s much to admire in Huang’s more explicit subtextual references. For anyone who’s seen a high school melodrama about an underdog involved in any kinds of extracurricular activity, this sports drama also feels a bit old hat even with the various intersections which would have made this seem like a novel feat two decades ago.…...

Photo: ‘Boogie’/Focus Features Best known for writing the book Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir, Eddie Huang’s story was originally transformed into a sitcom for ABC. Before writing his memoir, Huang had balanced a number of jobs including time as a fashion designer as well as a restaurateur. While he’s been fortunate to have as many careers as he has, Huang has humble beginnings. His past has shaped his present and heavily influenced his work. Born to Taiwanese immigrants, Huang was born in Washington, D.C. He grew up with a mother who cooked all the time and a father who owned a few restaurants, creating a love of food for him. Later, Huang would even start his own restaurant in New York and run it for over a decade. He began appearing as a food personality and even had his own show on Viceland. Though film fans may not acknowledge it, several other entertainment venues have had a tough time getting by in the past year. Just a few miles from the shuttered multiplex there were the empty stadiums and sports arenas. Now many more theatres are starting to open their doors once more (hey Big Apple and Tinsel Town), and the prospect of watching live baseball in a few weeks has many fans ecstatic. But there’s another sport just finishing up, allowing a few fans in, and adding another pandemic phrase for the “new normal”. That would be the basketball “bubble” that’s had a bumpy history. This new release is set in the before days, with a high schooler “baller” dreaming of the “big show”. But his parents are also counting on his “dream”. That and the pressure of representing his unique cultural community weigh heavily on the shoulders of the teen “hoop sensation” nicknamed Boogie.

It’s a very different landscape this week than it was a year ago, just before the pandemic forced cinemas to close around the country. Still, with New York cinemas cautiously reopening this week and many other markets determined to bring moviegoing back, the studios and indie distributors alike are bringing many of their long-delayed releases onto screens, albeit in an entirely new way.
For contrasting examples, look at how two of the majors are handling what were intended to be family film tentpoles: Paramount decided to bypass theaters entirely with “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” using the title to launch its new subscription service, Paramount Plus. Disney tested a similar approach with “Mulan” late last summer, and now unveils its latest animated princess movie, “Raya and the Last Dragon” — though that label disguises the many ways in which this one advances the formula — both in theaters and...

NYC Mayor candidate Andrew Yang hit the AMC Empire in Times Square early Friday, buying evening tickets for Eddie Huang’s Boogie and talking to a small group of press as cinemas around the city opened for the first time since last March.
“It’s a film set in New York and the filmmaker is Asian American and right now it seems like a time for us to be supporting Asian Americans. I also have a sense of just how difficult the film business is,” he said. “So supporting New York and an independent film that has very New York roots makes me very happy.”
“I think the reopening of movie theaters is a very powerful sign that we can do things that we used to do pre-Covid,” said Yang, who also ran in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.
Yang volunteered that he’s a AMC Stubs member — the chain’s frequent moviegoer pass.

I am a cultural appropriator. I think I’m a white person from Colorado. I talk like one in the peculiarly flat, uninflected accent of the westernmost mid-west. I make white cultural references to things like Steve Gutenberg and Fiona Apple, and I developed a friend group comprised almost exclusively of white, middle-class people of similar educational backgrounds. I was born in Golden, Co, in the early seventies, and because the examples of my own race presented to me in the ruling culture were to a one humiliating and ridiculous, I hated that others saw me as Chinese.

Even though it’s moving at a slower pace than many would like, the vaccine rollout is starting to gain some traction and in turn, moviegoers are going to start setting foot in theaters — safely of course. That said, the specialty box office space might be hearing some more coin drop into its piggy bank in the forthcoming months. It’s been quite a journey, but we’ll get there slowly yet surely.

Eddie Huang’s Boogie is a basketball movie, but one of its best moments comes courtesy of tennis. Boogie, né Alfred Chin (Taylor Takahashi) comes back to his home in Flushing, Queens, to find his Taiwanese immigrant father (Perry Yung) rewatching, for apparently the gazillionth time, the 1989 French Open match between Taiwanese-American upstart Michael Chang and the heavily favored world No. 1, Ivan Lendl. Chang won that match, which happened the day after the Tiananmen Square massacre, and went on to win the tournament. When Dad repeats his fervent assertion that...
