August: Osage County takes two minutes to prove that Meryl Streep, still racking up Oscar nominations like Skee-Ball tickets at age 64, will brutalize herself and you for the sake of a movie. As the loopy Oklahoma grandmama Violet in the new adaptation of Tracy Letts‘ Pulitzer-winning play, she stumbles around almost gratuitously, gargles profanities at Julia Roberts, and basically refuses to endear us for the movie’s entire duration. If you thought June Squibb was broad in Nebraska, you’ll be shocked at the kabuki-type insanity of Meryl’s work. She practically draws a sword and impales Margo Martindale for disgracing the emperor.
As such, August: Osage County polarizes. But who doesn’t love when Meryl gives us polarizing work? After all, her weirdest, kookiest, and potentially funniest movie of all time is also her most divisive: Death Becomes Her. The dark 1992 farce may feel like the snobbish Hollywood cousin...

Embellishment. Is it a dirty word, especially when it comes to writing? Well, it depends. Simply put, there must be no embellishment when writing for a professional journal. The truth must be told. There is a big difference between writing for a professional journal and writing fiction, or even this column. Writing for a professional journal must follow a proscribed style set by peer-reviewed organizations whose rules on grammatical usage, word choice, elimination of bias in language, the proper citation of quotes and references and the inclusion of charts and tables have become the authoritative source for all intellectual writing. This means that for me, as an Rn, Bsn, Cnor, I must adhere to the styles and standards set by the Publication Manual Of The American Psychologoical Assocociation (Apa), which is “consulted not only by psychologists but also by students and researchers in education, social work, nursing, business, and many...

Chicago – With each passing year, Katherine Heigl’s claims about Judd Apatow’s sexism appear increasingly absurd. While Apatow is producing A-grade work from female filmmakers, such as “Bridesmaids” and HBO’s “Girls,” Heigl is portraying shallow ditzes who are susceptible to chauvinistic, overgrown adolescents. “The Ugly Truth,” “Killers,” “Life as We Know It” and “New Years Eve” is not a track record worth bragging about.
Yet the worst crime committed by Heigl’s latest bomb, “One for the Money,” is that it is a complete bore. There isn’t a character or situation that inspires any modicum of interest. Viewers unfamiliar with novelist Janet Evanovich’s beloved heroine Stephanie Plum will fail to see what all the fuss is about. The script crams Evanovich’s hugely popular novels into a run-of-the-mill star vehicle fusing tired sitcom banter with a predictable murder mystery. This is the sort of picture that destroyed Whoopi Goldberg’s career.

The lightning-fast descent of Katherine Heigl’s career continues with One for the Money, her most unbearable and soporific work yet, providing more proof that any charm she displayed in Knocked Up was little more than a flash in the pan. On the strength (or indeed, weakness) of this lazy adaptation of Janet Evanovich’s beloved novel, it seems clear that Heigl would likely be more comfortable in the less judgemental, more forgiving arena of episodic TV drama, ala her hit show Grey’s Anatomy.
Heigl plays Stephanie Plum, an unemployed woman living in Newark, New Jersey, who in her desperation decides to work for her cousin Vinnie (Patrick Fischler), as a bail enforcement agent. Vinnie’s most valuable perp is Joe Morelli (Jason O’Mara), and he just happens to be a man Stephanie slept with as a teenager, who promptly kicked her to the kerb afterwards.

Liam Neeson had to fight off more than just Arctic wolves this weekend; he also had to face the fearsome power of online group discounts. Nonetheless, Neeson's new chilly thriller, "The Grey," managed to debut atop the box office chart and earn as much as the next two new releases combined. Not too shabby, considering that both "One for the Money" and "Man on a Ledge" offered viewers discounted tickets through Groupon and Living Social, respectively.
Neeson has become a bankable action star lately ("Taken," "Unknown"), despite his rapidly approaching 60th birthday. Nonetheless, expecations for "The Grey" were modest (in the $14 to $18 million range), thanks to its R rating and its rookie distributor (Open Road, whose only previous film was last fall's underwhelming "Killer Elite"). Still, reviews were generally good, which means a lot to the older audiences that have made Neeson's recent bonecrunchers into hits. So the movie outperformed...

With a clear premise and a popular actor operating within his wheelhouse, The Grey delivered upstart distributor Open Road Films their first number one debut this weekend. Meanwhile, One For the Money had an okay opening that exceeded most expectations, while Man on a Ledge was the latest mid-range Summit movie to underperform. The Top 12 grossed an estimated $99.4 million, which is up 7.6 percent from the same time period last year. The Grey devoured an estimated $20 million this weekend. Among star Liam Neeson's recent action movies, The Grey opened lower than Taken's $24.7 million and also a tad below Unknown ($21.9 million). Those were both PG-13, featured robust marketing from their big-time distributors, and were essentially cousins of the Bourne series. For The Grey to even come close to those movies speaks both to Mr. Neeson's drawing power and the importance of having an interesting, easily conveyable story (in this case,...

It’s not exactly Twilight or even True Blood but it came down to killer wolves and vampires at the box office. This time, the pack of wolves were the kings of the snowy mountain as Liam Neeson showed he is still not to be messed with and The Grey easily took the top spot with an estimated $20 million, knocking Underworld Awakening to second with $12.5 million. The genre delight just couldn’t hold and as expected, dropped largely with a -50.6%

"The Grey" -- Open Road Films' second release ever -- took a surprising $20 million at the domestic box office this weekend, making it the top movie in the country. While Open Road targeted men in its R-rated action drama about an oil drilling team that is pursued by a pack of wolves after an airplane crash in Alaska, Lionsgate went after a different audience with its PG-13 comedy "One for the Money." The strategy worked: "One for the Money," based on the Janet Evanovich novel, debuted to $11.75 -- exceeding projections...

Sunday Am, 5th Update: Coming Sources are telling me that the No. 1 movie at the North American box office is projected as Open Road Films acquisition of Liam Neeson-starrer The Grey with $6.5M for Friday and projected $17.6M for the weekend from 3,185 locations. Audiences gave it a ‘B-’ CinemaScore. At No. 2 is Lionsgate’s opener One For The Money starring Katherine Heigl and based on the Janet Evanovich’s bestselling novel. It came on stronger than the disaster which Hollywood thought it would be and received a ‘B-’ CinemaScore. It took in $4.1M for Friday and maybe $11.3M for the weekend from 2,737 runs. After that, one-week-old Underworld Awakening is #3 from Screen Gems/Sony Pictures and Red Tails #4 from LucasFilm/Fox had decent Friday holds of 64% and 53% respectively. All the way back in 5th place is Summit Entertainment’s new actioner Man On A Ledge with Sam Worthington which is...

America can relax. Its long national nightmare period in which Liam Neeson failed to punch anyone or anything is over for now. Yes, The Grey, which finds Neeson and a group of other oil rig workers surviving an air crach in harsh Alaskan wilderness only to face down a pack of hungry, hunt-happy wolves, stalked to the top of the Us box office this weekend, earning $20 million.Last week's champ, Underworld: Awakening, still held strong, seeing off other new competitors to take second place and $12.5 million. Katherine Heigl's latest, Janet Evanovich adaptation One For The Money, had to be content with third despite a strong Friday showing, and made $11.7 million. George Lucas' Red Tails was fourth with $10.4 million and new arrival Man On A Ledge was a little lower than everyone had hoped, with the thriller launching in fifth with $8.3 million.Stephen Daldry's 9/11-influenced drama Extremely Loud...

There is nothing in the world that makes my blood boil like the concept of ‘not trying’. ‘Not trying’ is the very hallmark of contempt: for yourself and for others. It is also a sign of weakness. One For The Money may be one of the most contemptuous, weak films to come out Hollywood in quite some time. It is also one of the worst films you will see in 2012, and we’re barely a month into the new year.
To call One For The Money a film would be a disservice to all films, including the annual bulls***t churned out by the likes of Michael Bay and Tyler Perry. It’s flimsy premise isn’t even worthy to be the pilot of a really bad TNT, USA, or Lifetime television show. It is a piece of work that simply doesn’t need to exist beyond the crappy section...

"One for the Money" brings Janet Evanovich’s beloved heroine Stephanie Plum to life on screen, a ditzy would-be bounty hunter who succeeds only in endangering the lives of anyone near her and dismissing the intelligence of audiences. Adapted from the 1994 novel of the same name, the story finds the down-on-her-luck Stephanie (Katherine Heigl) in desperate need of money. Out of options, she turns to her sleazeball cousin Vinnie (Patrick Fischler), who runs a bail bond business unoriginally named Vincent Plum’s Bail Bonds. He reluctantly sets her up as a bail recovery agent, figuring she’ll soon tire of the endeavor and find herself a more appropriate line of work. But Plum instead sets her sights on the biggest score, both professionally and personally. Turns out the highest-stake target is a former vice cop wanted for murder who also just happened to leave Ms. Plum high and dry after...

For those of you who may not be aware, this weekend’s new release One for the Money is based on a series of books about struggling bounty hunter Stephanie Plum written by Janet Evanovich. I’ve read them all, as well as most of Evanovich’s other work and I’d definitely count myself a fan. The writing, which admittedly gets better as the series goes along, is sharp and witty and fun to read. Unfortunately the film version turned out flat and tepid and very middle of the road. Stephanie Plum is a little down on her luck. After losing her job working the unmentionables counter at Macy’s, she’s languished for 6 months looking for work. Finding none, and with the rent past due and her car already repossessed she tries her last resort working for her sleazy cousin Vinnie. The thing is, Vinnie runs a bail bonds office and Stephanie knows absolutely nothing...

The first novel in Janet Evanovich’s bestselling Stephanie Plum series has been in development as a film for nearly 20 years, which is apparently how long it took for everything to turn out horribly wrong. The casting of Katherine Heigl, one of the least-gritty actresses on the planet, as rough-and-tumble Stephanie Plum, a laid-off lingerie saleswoman who discovers a surprising aptitude for bounty hunting, isn’t the biggest problem with One For The Money, but it’s a good place to start. As concessions to her blue-collar character, Heigl drops her G’s and throws in the occasional nasal ...

One for the Money, the new Katherine Heigl vehicle based on the popular Janet Evanovich book series, is now playing at a local theater near you. Since One for the Money was not screened early for critics, Alison Willmore (of the A.V. Club and Movieline) plunked down United States currency to see One for the Money at an overnight midnight showing. As I read her review at Movieline, it became obvious that an obsessive chat was necessary. (Spoiler alerts, obviously.) Mike: I saw One for the Money at a junket screening, so your memory of this movie is going to be a lot better than mine. Alison: I suppose there are people out there somewhere who might enjoy this film, but I don't want to know them. Mike: Were there any at your midnight screening? Alison: Well, there were probably about 10 people, including a couple who were actively complaining...

It took eighteen years for a screen version of Janet Evanovich’s best-selling comic thrillers about New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum to hit the screen, and it should take little more than a weekend to erase any chances of its becoming a franchise. Starring a painfully awkward Katherine Heigl, One for the Money mostly resembles a failed television pilot, a feeling which is only reinforced by its late January release and failure to be screened for critics. Sporting brown hair, a drab wardrobe and a wobbly Jersey accent as the unemployed former lingerie saleswoman turned “recovery agent,” Heigl

Lionsgate-Summit Offers Discounted Tickets For Films This Weekend Exclusive: To movieogers on the coasts, the Marcus Theatres chain isn’t a household name. But people in flyover country go to the more than 50 first-run theatre locations in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. So Midwest audiences won’t see Lionsgate’s One For The Money in a Marcus Theatre because the theater chain and the studio couldn’t come to financial terms. It’s always about the money — in this case, I hear the chain objected to Lionsgate’s deal with Groupon this weekend for discounted movie tickets to One For The Money. It may not matter. After successfully beating up on countless European henchmen in Taken and Unknown, Liam Neeson is now set to face off against some hungry wolves in The Grey. The survival thriller opens at 3,185 locations this weekend, and should claim first place ahead of fellow newcomers Man on a Ledge (2,998 theaters) and One For the Money (2,737 theaters). Meanwhile, The Descendants has the biggest expansion among Oscar nominees (up to 1,997 locations), and should once again make its way in to the Top 10. While he has periodically flirted with action roles throughout his career, it wasn't until the last few years that Liam Neeson became known as one of cinema's leading ass-kickers. That persona is largely due to the remarkable popularity of Taken, which opened to $24.7 million on this same weekend in 2009 and ultimately closed with a huge $145 million total. He also starred in the big-screen adaptation of The A-Team (25.7 million/$77.2 million) and was...
