Under the massive pact, believed to be for four years and well into the eight figures, Levitan will create, write, develop, direct and supervise series projects for the studio, now part of Disney Television Studios.
Levitan had been without an overall deal since last year. In June 2018, he was one of several top creators of 20th TV-produced series to speak up following a controversial statement by a Fox News star, Laura Ingraham, tweeting that he was “disgusted” to work for 21st Century Fox, which owned both the studio and Fox News, and announcing he would not be re-upping his 20th TV overall deal, which was expiring. “Modern Family” co-creator Steve Levitan is extending his relationship with 20th Century Fox Television, inking a multi-year overall deal at the studio and effectively joining the Walt Disney family.
He will create, write, develop, direct and supervise series projects for 20th, and continue to oversee “Modern Family” with co-creator and executive producer Chris Lloyd through its 11th and final season, which ends its run on ABC next year.
The new deal keeps Levitan with his longtime studio home of two decades, but under a new corporate parent whose politics no longer conflict with his own, now that Disney has completed the acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment portfolio. Levitan told Variety last year that he would not work with the Murdoch family-controlled Fox spinoff that includes Fox News, Fox Sports, and the Fox broadcast network.

Disney Television Studios has named Jonnie Davis president of ABC Studios, amid a restructuring in the wake of the Disney-Fox merger that has resulted in the displacement of current head Patrick Moran and ABC Studios executive vice president Howard Davine.
Moran and Davine were both well liked, according to a person familiar with the matter, but Disney TV Studios president Craig Hunegs wanted to infuse ABC Studios with “new blood.”
In an internal memo that Hunegs sent to staff, he acknowledged that “change can be difficult in the short term,” and that “Dana (Walden) and I will do our best to communicate with you often, with transparency and clarity.”
Succeeding Davis is Carolyn Cassidy, who has been upped to president of creative affairs at 20th Century Fox Television, and will run the studio with current president of business operations Howard Kurtzman. Cassidy was most recently executive VP of current programming.

Ken Olin has signed an overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television, Variety has learned. Under the deal, Olin will continue to serve as executive producer on the hit NBC series “This Is Us” while also allowing him to develop other projects across platforms.
“Ken is a special talent and a terrific guy who has been such a valuable resource to Dan [Fogelman] and everyone at ‘This Is Us,'” said Jonnie Davis, president of creative affairs for 20th TV. “Keeping him at this studio and on that important show was literally a mission for Howard [Kurtzman] and me, and we’re equally excited to work on other projects with him. A funny thing happened on the way to the upfront in a year of major transitions for the largest player in television.
Numerous network and studio executives found a dealmaking environment that was more collegial and collaborative than in the recent past. With so much of the traditional TV business in flux, there was a palpable feeling of competitors taking a long view and trying to find ways to fight through the storm together.
“There was a sense of resignation about the structural changes that took place this past year,” said Peter Roth, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. TV Group.
The most seismic shift has been the union of Disney and 21st Century Fox and the immense TV content and distribution at the enlarged company. Upfronts week always revolves around big reveals and highly anticipated first looks. This year, one of the most talked-about contenders to emerge was not a show but a studio.
The newly minted Disney Television Studios made a splashy debut as three of the industry’s large production entities – 20th Century Fox Television, ABC Studios and Fox 21 Television Studios – have come together under one roof following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
The mantra on the Century City and Burbank lots is collaboration and cross-pollination of talent. The three companies will continue to be run with autonomy as distinct labels under the Disney Television Studios umbrella. But there is a clear expectation that the labels will share resources and information as warranted to support the larger cause of feeding successful shows to Disney’s suite of platforms.
Executives at the DTS studios have spent the past few weeks on a whirlwind get-to-know-your-colleagues tour.

“This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman has signed a massive five-year overall deal that will keep him in the fold at 20th Century Fox Television.
Sources tell Variety that the pact is worth somewhere in the $125 million range. Under the new deal, Fogelman will continue to develop drama, live-action and animated comedy projects. Fogelman previously signed a four-year deal with the TV studio in 2015, following a bidding war after his exit from ABC Studios.
The transaction, brokered by Wme, is also understood to involve a separate deal involving accelerated payments of Fogelman’s profit participation stake in “This Is Us,” which 20th TV produces for NBC, that could be worth as much as nine figures over time.
Fogelman was hotly pursued by numerous heavy hitters, but is said to have favored staying with 20th TV because of his close relationship with Dana Walden, who now oversees ABC and Disney Television Studios which encompasses 20th TV.

New Girl creator Liz Meriwether has signed a rich four-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV. Under the pact, she will continue to work on her current series for the Disney-owned studio and will develop new ones.
No one would comment but I hear the pact is in the high-eight figures. Meriwether’s previous overall pact with 20th TV expired last year. Because of the uncertainty surrounding her longtime studio home at the time, with both Disney and Comcast bidding for the 21st Century Fox assets 20th TV was was part of, Meriwether opted for one-year extension. It proved to be a very wise decision as the overall deal prices for top talent have gone up significantly this year in a very competitive marketplace.
Meriwether is in the category of most sought after showrunners. She has created a successful series in New Girl and has proven that she can successfully juggle multiple series.

Octavia Spencer has launched her own production company and signed a three-year pod deal with 20th Century Fox Television, the studio announced on Monday.
Formed with Wme agent Brian Clisham, Orit Entertainment aims to produce television and film projects “that inspire, uplift and most importantly, entertain — very much in the same fashion as the diverse slate of movies and series that have defined Octavia’s career as an actor and producer thus far,” according to the announcement.
Under their deal with 20th, Orit will develop and produce shows for the studio across all genres and platforms.
“I decided to partner with Brian because, as an agent, he was instrumental in shaping my career,” Spencer said in a statement. “He has always understood my desire to work with a diverse group of talent both in front of and behind the scenes. I trust his taste and his counsel and know he...

Jason Winer and his Small Dog Picture Company have signed a new, multi-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television.
Under the deal, Winer will develop, executive produce and direct projects for all platforms. In addition to directing projects he develops, the deal also contemplates him potentially directing those he does not develop personally, as well as doing some episodic directing as opportunities arise.
“20th has been my creative home since they bought my very first short film over thirteen years ago,” Winer said. “I’m so thrilled to be extending that relationship another three years and expanding my company with Jon Radler, especially during a time of such exciting change and opportunity. I’m deeply grateful to Peter Rice, Dana Walden, Jonnie Davis and Howard Kurtzman for the belief they showed in me way back when, the support they’ve given me over the years, and the passion they...

Prolific TV director and producer Jason Winer has re-upped his overall deal at his longtime studios home, 20th Century Fox TV, where he has been for a decade and a half. I hear the new pact is for three years and is valued in the eight figures, among the biggest for a director/producer.
Under the new agreement, Winer will continue to develop, executive produce and direct series projects for all platforms through his Small Dog Picture Company. In addition to directing projects he develops, the deal also allows for Winer to helm other pilots for the studio, along with some additional episodic directing.
Two comedy projects from Small Dog Picture Company and 20th TV landed pilot orders at the broadcast networks this season, Perfect Harmony at NBC, starring Bradley Whitford and Anna Camp, and Woman Up at ABC. Winer is executive producing both pilots and is directing Perfect Harmony...

When Disney executives visit the Fox lot in Century City, the home of their newly acquired TV and film studios, they’re greeted by a big new banner that says “Welcome to Fox” and doors newly painted with the word “Fox.”
It’s not so much a welcome as a way of marking territory, one Fox insider told TheWrap Friday, three days after Disney closed its $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s film and TV assets — and two days after it started layoffs that are expected to cost as many as 4,000 Fox employees their jobs.
The insider said the banner and “Fox” logos, which went up Thursday, were a way of reminding Disney that under the new deal, it is renting the Century City property from Fox: “This is still our lot.”
