“Top Chef: Houston” started last week with a challenge focused around primal cuts of beef. So it’s fitting that episode two, “Friday Night Bites,” took the cheftestants in completely the opposite direction: carbs! Read on to find out what the contestants did with my favorite food group.
See‘Top Chef’ season 19 premiere recap: ‘Primal Instincts’ started Houston competition with a beefy team challenge
The 14 chefs remaining in the competition were Damarr Brown, Jo Chan, Monica Feybesse, Evelyn Garcia, Robert Hernandez, Jae Jung, Jackson Kalb, Sam Kang, Luke Kolpin, Buddha Lo, Stephanie Miller, Ashleigh Shanti, Nick Wallace, and Sarah Welch.
But before the chefs went carb crazy, they had to tangle with my second favorite food group …
Quickfire Challenge
When the cheftestants entered the kitchen, they were greeted by Padma Lakshmi and guest judge Irma Galvan, a James Beard Award winning chef. They were surrounded by piles of cheese and a fondue machine.

After safely and successfully filming its most recent season last year in Portland, Ore., “Top Chef,” Bravo’s Emmy-winning culinary competition, has moved to Houston for Season 19. Production has begun there, and the show will premiere next year.
Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons are all returning to adjudicate the new group of cheftestants. Also coming back will be a variation of last season’s “Top Chef” all-star judging panel, in which alumni of the show joined its bubble as guest judges and mentors. The idea was born out of pre-covid vaccine necessity, but proved to be popular with the show’s fans. Tiffany Derry, Hung Huynh, Stephanie Izard, Melissa King, Kristen Kish, Kwame Onwuachi, Sam Talbot, Brooke Williamson and Claudette Zepeda are among the alumni who will appear on “Top Chef’s” 19th season, with more names to be announced later.

The Food Network is about to launch a true “high concept” television series.
Chopped 420 is a spin-off of the popular Chopped series, in which four chefs battle it out through appetizer, main course and dessert stages using picnic baskets filled with challenging foods. As the name of the new series suggests, it will explore cannabis cookery as a basket element.
The host will be comedian Ron Funches, and judges include chefs Esther Choi, Luke Reyes and Sam Talbot; drag performer and cannabis activist Laganja Estranja, and comedian Tacarra Williams. The show will start streaming on discovery+ on April 20, the annual holiday by those who indulge celebrating the best time of day to fire one up.
The new series will mark the “first time in Chopped history” that chefs will “utilize cannabis to enhance their dishes,” says Food Network president Courtney White. “Viewers are in for a wild ride.”

Top Chef‘s Sam Talbot isn’t exactly a homebody: His comfort-food hotspot Pretty Southern opened in Brooklyn in January, so he’s not spending a ton of time at his apartment, just a mile from the restaurant.
“I’m basically in the kitchen from 8:30 a.m. til at least midnight every night,” he tells People in this week’s issue. But he still cares about making the cozy one-bedroom feel like home.
“The vibe and the brightness in the apartment, it comes from my upbringing,” says Talbot, who decked out the space with “calming” succulents and lush plants.

Top Chef is currently cooking in rainy Seattle, but I'd like to offer some sunnier vistas: the ten hottest contestants in Top Chef history. We'll have to save our Tom Colicchio/Rocco Dispirito lust for another post.
In the meantime, take a look at these ten hotties, glare ominously into their eyes like an intrigued Padma Lakshmi, and fight with me in the comments about who should be ranked higher/lower/not at all.
10. Chris Crary (season nine)
You're working with some kind of charm when you can place ninth and still garner the Fan Favorite award, and as you can see, Chris Crary of Top Chef: Texas was working with some fine pectoral charms. Too bad my vision of that season is tainted by weird, vaguely mean-seeming guest judge Pee Wee Herman.
9. Hung Hunyh (season three)

Former Top Chef contestant, Sam Talbot, wanted to offer some advice to Paula Deen. As a chef from the south with Type 1 Diabetes, Talbot can identify with Deen's dilemma of finding a balance between her unhealthy recipes and her own health issues.

Talbot is able to stay away from processed sugar and uses coconut and flax seed in his recipes instead.

A daytime party at the Surf Lodge. From PatrickMcMullan.com. Is Montauk becoming the Miami Beach of the North? About 80 years ago, Carl Fisher, the entrepreneur who turned Miami Beach into the flashy resort town that it is today, set his sights on Montauk, the sleepy surfing community that sits about three hours east of New York City at the end of the Long Island Rail Road line. Hoping to turn Montauk into a power players’ playground, Fisher built Montauk Yacht Club in 1928, and the Jazz Age glitterati—Vincent Astor, J. P. Morgan, Harold S. Vanderbilt, and Nelson Doubleday, among others—jumped on board as founding members. Even Charles Lindbergh docked his seaplane at the marina. Then came the stock-market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression, which left Fisher penniless, and Montauk escaped virtually unscathed. Until last summer, when the Surf Lodge came to town. A hodgepodge of Big City partners—Rob McKinley,...
