Iac says that it has formed a “strategic partnership” in the publication with Ben Sherwood, the former president of Disney’s TV group (and the former president of ABC News) as well as Joanna Coles, the former chief content officer for Hearst and editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan.
Sherwood will be The Daily Beast‘s CEO and publisher, with Coles serving as its chief content and creative officer. In a statement, Coles said the new team would be “bringing The Beast back to its rebel roots and will build on its beloved DNA to make it even beastier.
“Our fearless investigative team will break even more stories on the end of democracy,” she added. “And obviously our Chief Fruit and Vegetable Correspondent is moving to Montecito and will be on 24/7 stand-by for the launch of the American Riviera Orchard.

“The Bold Type,” which airs its fifth and final season premiere Wednesday night, might not have ever happened if it weren’t for Katy Perry. Former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles recalls the genesis of the series, inspired by her life at the top of the masthead, as stemming from a cover shoot with the pop singer years ago.
“It had gone really well. The one thing we asked her not to do was to Instagram anything from the shoot, because the pictures wouldn’t be out for another six weeks on the cover of Cosmo,” Coles recalls. “She promised she wouldn’t, and we all left feeling very high after the shoot. Within 20 minutes, she had posted the exact picture that we were going to use on the cover. I was beside myself. We couldn’t use the best picture because it had already been out there.”

SPACs, which are exploding, are basically empty publicly traded vessels with investors and, in this case, seasoned managers, that go public and find private companies to merge with – taking them public in turn in a process that’s faster, easier and cheaper than a traditional initial public offering. Fox has given a pilot order to an untitled drama about students remaking the 1985 movie The Goonies. The project comes from The Bold Type creator Sarah Watson and the Gail Berman-run SideCar, with the involvement of the film’s director-producer Richard Donner, production company, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin, and studio Warner Bros.
The untitled film re-enactment drama stems from the direct talent/script deal Fox Entertainment signed with Watson — and other writers — earlier this season. Watson was paired with Berman and her Fox-owned production company SideCar to develop the concept. The project was introduced to Amblin, Donner and his wife/producing partner Lauren Shuler Donner, and Warner Bros, who all came on board, clearing the path for the script to get a pilot order. Superbad helmer Greg Mottola has been tapped to direct.

“Modern Family” co-creator Steve Levitan is extending his relationship with 20th Century Fox Television, inking a multi-year overall deal at the studio and effectively joining the Walt Disney family.
He will create, write, develop, direct and supervise series projects for 20th, and continue to oversee “Modern Family” with co-creator and executive producer Chris Lloyd through its 11th and final season, which ends its run on ABC next year.
The new deal keeps Levitan with his longtime studio home of two decades, but under a new corporate parent whose politics no longer conflict with his own, now that Disney has completed the acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment portfolio. Levitan told Variety last year that he would not work with the Murdoch family-controlled Fox spinoff that includes Fox News, Fox Sports, and the Fox broadcast network.
