The embattled American adaptation of the classic Great British Baking Show (Or Bake-Off to the U.K. purists) was bought from ABC by the Roku Channel as part of a huge swathe of scripted and unscripted projects set to premiere on the up-and-coming streamer.
While it is going to be judged by the same judges who work on the British show, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, the new American hosts have since announced to keep building up the hype. Now, the first promo images of Ellie Kemper and Zach Cherry in the show’s iconic tent standing behind Hollywood and Leith have been released.
Kemper is best known for her acclaimed performance in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as well as a long-running supporting role in The Office. Cherry is an actor and well-known improviser who has had bit roles in a wealth of sitcoms and other films and just had a break-out lead performance in Severance.

Johnny Iuzzini kept criticizing Sally Camacho for having sous chef Orlando make her showpiece, but she doesn't think that cost her the Top Chef: Just Desserts win. "I fell short on my plated dessert and if I had executed what I had planned, I would have won," Camacho tells TVGuide.com. The pastry chef couldn't finish off her spheres as she planned in the end. How did she run of time? Find out. Plus: See what else she had to adjust on the fly.

Our top moments of the week:
14. Worst Homage: Susan struggles in her "super-edgy" community college art class on Desperate Housewives when the instructor asks the students to paint a nude model. When Susan's teacher points out her discomfort, Susan goes a little a lot overboard to compensate for her nerves — and comes to class naked when she misinterprets something her teacher says. The scene would be funnier if it wasn't almost an exact retread of her accidental nude streak in Season 1.
13. Can't Have It Both Ways Award: Top Chef: Just Desserts' Sally chooses showpiece master Orlando to make her showpiece for the finale — based on her design, of course. At Judges' Table, Johnny Iuzzini lays into...

Matthew Petersen took a risk and it didn't pay off. Far from a showpiece specialist, the Top Chef: Just Desserts finalist opted to make a sugar showpiece instead of a chocolate one — which he was familiar with — in the finale, only to have head judge Johnny Iuzzini criticize him for taking the gamble. "I needed to do that to have a chance," he tells TVGuide.com. "It's not something I do. I make plated desserts. I don't make showpieces. ... But I was totally stoked [with how it turned out]. It was standing! It looked good and more importantly, I was proud of it." See what else he has to say about being the underdog, why he didn't want sous chefs and blowing Gail Simmons' mind with speculoos.

What does Semi-Homemade Cooking star Sandra Lee whip up to surprise her boyfriend of five years, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo? "I make him coffee brownies, and I undercook them by about 10 minutes so they're gooey - that's how he likes them," Lee told People Friday night at Sweet, an all-dessert party she was hosting as part of the New York City Wine and Food Festival. She might want to do a little more research the next time she springs a treat on him. At the event, which featured decadent creations from pastry chefs like Top Chef's Johnny Iuzzini,...

So shines a good deed in a weary world. I can’t believe they hadn’t done this yet! In honor of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory’s 40th anniversary this year, Top Chef: Just Desserts issued a “Pure Imagination” challenge for the contestants to create their own edible “World of Wonder” a.k.a. Wonka’s Chocolate Room. Some of the original cast — the actors who played Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Mike Teevee, and Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum, pictured at right) — were on hand to taste the confectionery rainbow and lament the absence of Augustus Gloop. It’s just...

The Extra Dessert Delights Awful Product Placement Quickfire Challenge
With this episode of Top Chef: Just Desserts we're kicking off a new, shorter kind of recap. We're calling it a SnapCap, and it's designed to give you our quick take on what went down on some of our favorite shows as soon as possible after they've aired. We've even created a graphic scale to illustrate just how we'd rate an episode based on five different aspects.
Some things like Beefcake, Heart, and Challenges are pretty self-explanatory. AfterElton Bait will tell you how gay a particular episode was and, since this SnapCap is for a reality show, we're including a Trainwreck Quotient because, well, reality shows are so often giant trainwrecks. Isn't that why people really watch?
Let's get started! Here's how I'd rate last night's episode of Tc: Jd:
Beefcake: Given that this is Top Chef and not Survivor or Amazing Race,...

This week, some of our sweet contestants on Top Chef: Just Desserts turned sour. Maybe it was because of their quickfire challenge. They had to pull a lemon dessert out of their ass in 45 minutes.
With the high priestess of cake making, Margaret Braun as the guest judge, the cheftestants frantically made some citrus-y desserts and upon judging Margaret called out Orlando as one of her least favorites saying that she personally does not like mixing lemon with chocolate. His "sour" reaction was, and I quote, "Personally, you may not like it, but you're not judging on a personal level you're judging on a professional level so leave personal sh*t at the door."
Finally. The gloves come off and the diva comes out. I have a feeling there's more where this came from.

Last night, I tuned in for the very first time to Top Just: Chef Desserts. I mean Top Chef: Just Desserts. Are you watching this show? I think I love it! In this, the second episode, the cake-testants had to do a lemon-themed Quickfire and then work in groups to design a three-tiered cake for the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Here is a collection of my thoughts from throughout the episode. Like the cakes, they are mismatched, haphazard and downright ugly at parts.
1. Two minutes in, I can't believe I didn't watch the first season of this show. It combines my two favorite things: Top Chef and Caaaaaaaake!
2. There should be a skull-and-crossbones Jackass-style warning at the beginning of each episode telling you, "Do not watch Top Chef: Just Desserts if you have no chocolate or ice cream in the house. You will become this guy."
3. Johnny Iuzzini looks like...

'Top Chef' is a juggernaut, with cheftestants competing for huge prizes and culinary glory going on nine seasons now. But one thing has been a constant on 'Top Chef' and its spin-off 'Top Chef Masters': desserts can send even the most talented chefs off to pack their knives and go.
Pastry is full of complicated, mathematical equations that savory chefs don't often bother with, and if a dessert fails, it's not usually a simple fix. The recipes call for much more time and patience, a luxury not usually given in reality TV competitions.
Which is why I was so thrilled that 'Tc' got another spin-off last year: 'Top Chef Just Desserts.' While Season 1 delivered on drama, it left too much to the imagination when it came to the food, but they've kicked it up a few degrees with Season 2 (Wednesdays,...

Did you catch the promos for the second season of Top Chef: Just Desserts? They showed that judge Johnny Iuzzini has traded his severe bad boy pompadoured, tattooed pastry chef look for a more dapper, tailored appearance.
Unfortunately, that is one of the few things that made the second season premiere of this series semi-exciting. Even worse, we lost a member of Team Gay in the very first episode.
Team Gay at the start of the episode...
As the little brother to the more engaging Top Chef, Tc:jd uses the same formula but gives it a sweet tooth with a gaggle of pastry chefs competing to win a bunch of money, a car, short-lived reality show stardom, and other stuff.
In addition to Johnny, the usual judges, Gail Simmons, chef Hubert Keller and Daily Candy's Dannielle Kyrillos are on hand to build and demolish self-esteems — the latter being a great schadenfreude treat.

Johnny Iuzzini and Gail Simmons
As the editor of AfterElton.com, I sometimes have to watch shows I don’t particularly care about and then interview those involved in making that program. Let's just say that sometimes it can be a bit of a chore. (Who said anything about Most Eligible Dallas? I didn’t bring that show up!)
Okay, maybe I did mention Med, but perhaps I shouldn’t speak ill of that particular show because it’s thanks to my having interviewed Drew Ginsburg, one of the “friends” on Med, that I stumbled into an opportunity to interview someone else from a show I actually like a lot. I'm speaking of Top Chef and the person I had the good fortune to interview was judge Gail Simmons, who also happens to be the host of another show I really like: Top Chef: Just Desserts. The Bataan Death March … With Chocolate
Another Television Critics Association Summer Tour is over and this was probably the most memorable one I’ve ever done, for a whole host of reasons.
Another critic once described the press tour (which usually lasts for two solid weeks with no breaks at all) as the Bataan Death March With Cocktails. Since I’m not much of a drinker that isn’t true for me. Instead, for me it’s a death march with chocolate since the cable and broadcast networks were constantly tempting us with all kinds of chocolates, from marshmallows covered with dark chocolate to chocolate covered strawberries to all kinds of fancy fou-fou chocolate desserts.
ABC even sent a box of amazing chocolate chip cookies to my room where they begged me to eat them! Talk about evil.
As I said, this TCA was very memorable. The day I arrived in Los Angeles,...

Is Afterelton Post-gay? And What Does That Mean?
On Wednesday we posted an article, When It Comes to Teen Sex, MTV's Awkward is Anything But, about the progressive way the show is dealing with teen sexuality. In the comments, a number of folks asked why we had written an article about a show that (currently) has no gay overt content. At the same time, over on our recap of Pretty Little Liars (another show with no gay or bi characters, just lesbian ones), some readers wondered whether we're becoming less specifically "gay" and asked just what's going on.
While we've always covered some things that aren't specifically gay, it's true that lately we've been doing more of that. There are a number of different reasons driving that decision, and I thought I'd take a minute to explain why.
It started last year when I kept getting emails and seeing comments...

As told to Archana Ram.
All of the fondues from last night’s Quickfire actually sounded pretty good. I thought that they were all creative. Obviously, in the time they had, some are always going to be better than others. I always think it’s smart when you can take flavors that people are comfortable with or nostalgic about and introduce them in a new way. The truth is, in food there are generally very few things that haven’t been done before. What Richard did was what he’s always trying to do is, which is to take flavors,...

Hey, look, it’s Joe Jonas. Squeallllllllllllllllll! Shriekkkkkkkkk! Soundofamilliontweengirlsfaintingggggg! Did I get this right? I mean he’s the cute one, no? Why when there are three singing brothers is there always only one cute one? For reference please see Hanson. Host Padma Lakshmi informs the chefs that Joe will be guest judging the Quickfire Challenge. All of the cheftestants manage to stay conscious.
In fact Dale T. is unimpressed and unaware of who he is, saying, “I thought he might be a pastry chef.” Funny, but actually not that far off. Joe does bear a definite resemblance to pastry chef and Top Chef Just Desserts judge Johnny Iuzzini.
Joe will be the guest at the Museum of Natural History’s annual Night at the Museum sleepover. The Quickfire is to create a yummy, eat-with-your-hands midnight snack for the kids. The chefs' reaction to cooking for kids follows roughly along the Kinsey Scale.
