Figure skating champion Ashley Wagner is sharing allegations of sexual assault against John Coughlin. In a piece for USA Today, published on Thursday, the Olympic athlete details the 2008 incident allegedly involving her fellow skater, who died by suicide in January. In her story, Wagner states that she was just 17 at the time, while Coughlin was 22. "I was attending a figure skating camp in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and some of the local athletes were having people over at a house," she writes. "I had always been hyper-focused on skating, so I had never been to a party before. I knew everyone there, so it felt like it was okay to have a little fun. I also had never had anything to drink...

Twenty years ago, at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan, two American women battled for the gold medal spot in the ladies’ singles competition: Tara Lipinski and Michelle Kwan.
As we know now, Lipinski ended up with gold and Kwan the silver. In 2002, it was much of the same: American Sarah Hughes took gold while Kwan won bronze. At the World Championships, too, American women dominated: From 1996 to 2006, there were only three years where an American woman didn’t land the top spot, and even then, the United States still had one (or even two) women on the podium.

When figure skater Karen Chen takes the ice in her first Olympics in Pyeongchang this week, she’ll have a very famous fan cheering her on back home: 1992 gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi.
A native of Fremont, California, 18-year-old Chen hails from the same city as Yamaguchi. They first met almost six years ago, when Chen was 12 years old, and since then Yamaguchi has become her mentor.
It wasn’t long after they met that Yamaguchi, a Milk Life partner, says she saw the potential for greatness in the young skater. And now, she says that Chen has it all to succeed in the sport.

Figure skater Mirai Nagasu has done it again, landing the rare and incredibly difficult triple axel — this time while competing in the Winter Olympics. The feat makes her the first U.S. female figure skater to land the jump during an Olympic competition.
Completing the triple axel at the start of her free skate in the figure skating team event on Monday morning (Sunday evening stateside) already set her apart from her competitors, all before she had even left the rink: None of the other women even planned to attempt the triple axel, which requires a forward takeoff and three-and-a-half rotations in the air.

When the pairs skaters take the ice in PyeongChang Thursday evening, they’ll be the first married pair to compete at the Olympics since fellow Americans Jenni Meno and Todd Sand went to Nagano in 1998. And this time, they are the sole set of American pairs skaters heading to South Korea — making them the United States’s only hope for a pairs figure skating medal in PyeongChang.
Throughout their partnership, they’ve won two National titles (in 2015 and again this year) and served as the Olympic alternates in Sochi.

Tonya Harding has made headlines for years — first for her Olympic-level figure skating and then for her connection to an assault engineered by her ex-husband and others against her rival, Nancy Kerrigan.
The real-life, weirder-than-fiction saga is returning to the spotlight with I, Tonya, opening in select theaters on Friday, with Harding herself making a surprise appearance at the Los Angeles premiere Tuesday evening.
Starring Margot Robbie as Harding, the retelling of her rise and fall will put figure skating back in the national conversation only months before the sport gets perhaps its biggest showcase, at the Winter Olympics.

It’s less than 100 days until the Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang, South Korea — and a moment Ashley Wagner has been dreaming about for two decades.
At 26, she’s already five years older than Michelle Kwan was the last time she won an Olympic medal, and 11 years older than Tara Lipinski was when she won gold — but the skating veteran is not letting her age be a deterrent.
“To be a 26-year-old woman on the ice is an achievement in this sport because you’re working against a lot of different things,” she tells People. “If I got to Pyeongchang, I will be the oldest U.

This year's U.S. women's figure skating team is incredibly talented. All three women – Ashley Wagner, Gracie Gold and Polina Edmunds – boast triple-triple jump combinations, the most difficult elements, save the occasional triple Axel attempt, in women's figure skating. All three women also have spins that demonstrate the gamut between flexibility and nauseating flexibility.
Why, then, is it audacious to believe the American women will medal at this week's World Championships? Well, for starters, they haven't since 2006.
Eight years off the podium might not seem like such a big deal,...
