Franchises are both the lifeblood and bane of Hollywood’s existence. When everything clicks, a series can keep consumers intrigued for years if not decades — James Bond, Batman, Star Wars, Mission: Impossible, Superman. But sooner or later, fatigue sets in and the complaints begin (i.e., what happened to originality?)
The 2024 summer box office was a rare exception. For the first time in recent memory, “franchise” no longer was a dirty word, says one top studio executive. Those big brands helped push year-to-date domestic grosses to more than $5.4 billion as of the weekend of Sept. 6-8, which is still down about 13 percent compared with a year earlier but better than expectations for this point in 2024.
The reversal in fortune began after a rough May that saw The Fall Guy, a potential franchise newbie, spin out at the box office, followed by the blowout of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ($172 million...

Kevin Costner’s period Western Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 won’t be riding into theaters on Aug. 16 after all.
The film is being pulled from the release calendar for now after Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 bit the dust in its theatrical debut late last month. A new date has yet to be announced for the sequel, but a theatrical release is still the intention.
After numerous discussions, Costner’s Territory Pictures and distribution partner New Line Cinema made the decision to switch up their ambitious release plan in hopes of allowing more time to grow the audience for the first film, which sports a $100 million price tag.
As part of that attempt, Chapter 1 will debut in the home on Premium VOD July 16 in addition to still being available to watch in theaters (the film could do notable business on PVOD).

Max has released a new look at its upcoming DC crime drama The Penguin that gives a much more expansive look at the show’s world and characters.
Below is the second teaser trailer for the upcoming Max limited series — a spinoff of Matt Reeves’ 2022 hit The Batman starring Colin Farrell as the infamous Gotham City gangster. The footage includes scenes clearly picking up right after the events at the end of The Batman.
In the movie, The Penguin was a lieutenant to crime boss Carmine Falcone, who met an untimely end. In the series, The Penguin is stepping up to lead crime in Gotham City in a series. The footage suggests the show could play like a DC take on The Sopranos. Lauren LeFranc (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) serves as showrunner.

Nicholas Galitzine: The Artist Formerly Known as a Prince?
He’s played Cinderella’s Prince opposite Camila Cabello, the Prince of England in Red, White & Royal Blue and next will play He-Man, Prince Adam of Eternia, in Masters of the Universe. But is Hollywood’s latest “It” boy an actual prince? There has been a ton of speculation in the press that Nicholas Galitzine, 29, descends from a royal bloodline — specifically Russia’s House of Golitsyn (an alternate spelling of his surname), a noble family whose members were executed and exiled during the Russian Revolution. And many Galitzines did wind up in London, where Nick was eventually born in 1994. Unfortunately, that’s where the fairy tale ends. THR has unearthed documentation confirming that Nick’s paternal grandfather legally changed his name to Edward Ralph Alexander Galitzine on April 9, 1956. His birth name? Edward Ralph Alexander Tier. And while Nick’s financier father,...

Conor McGregor vs. Dwayne Johnson: Who Cashed the Bigger Check?
Did Conor McGregor really set a world record with his Road House payday? That’s what the onetime UFC superstar has been bragging about in recent weeks, claiming he’s now “the highest paid first-time actor of all time.” If true — and McGregor, 35, hasn’t disclosed how much he got for his debut role in Amazon’s reboot of the 1989 kickboxing flick — he would beat Dwayne Johnson’s record of $5.5 million for 2002’s Scorpion King. While some have scoffed at his claim, sources indicate he was indeed paid in that ballpark, and given the Irishman’s stature in the martial arts world and the offers he has turned down (he accepted a role opposite Vin Diesel in 2017’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage, only to back out before filming began) it wouldn’t be surprising if some sort of record was broken.

In his vast career, William Shatner has directed five features. Three of them were documentaries about the making of "Star Trek" including "The Captains" in 2011, "Get a Life!" in 2012, and "Chaos on the Bridge" in 2014. Prior to these, Shatner also helmed a 2002 sci-fi film called "Groom Lake," which he co-wrote with the notorious "Star Trek" producer Maurice Hurley.
Shatner's highest-profile directing gig, however, came in 1989 with the release of "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier." To this day, "Star Trek V" is considered the least of the "Star Trek" movies, lambasted for its clunky script, weird central conceit, and cheap special effects. In the film, the U.S.S. Enterprise is hijacked by Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill), the half-brother of Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Sybok flies the ship to the very center of the galaxy where he hopes to meet God face-to-face. Actor Will Forte has posted an open letter to the cast and crew of Coyote vs. Acme after he finally got to watch his own film.
Amid heavy rumors the film is officially dead following Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent quarterly report that included a mysterious $115 million tax write-off, Forte admitted he assumed the film must have been “a hunk of junk … but then I saw it.” Forte’s comments also seem to confirm that the movie will not be released following Warners entertaining offers to sell it.
Writing on X, Forte began, “To the Cast and Crew of Coyote Vs Acme — I know that a lot of you haven’t gotten a chance to see our movie. And sadly, it’s looking like you never will. When I first heard that our movie was getting ‘deleted,’ I hadn’t seen it yet. So I was thinking what everyone else...

One of Hollywood’s hallmarks — talent promotion and publicity — is back in full swing as actors and studio marketers reunite.
By mid-day Thursday, less than 24 hours after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, Tom Hiddleston was booking a TV appearance in the U.K to promote the season to finale of Marvel Studios’ series Loki. He’ll then travel to New York City, where he and The Marvels star Brie Larson are slated to appear on The Tonight Show. Also expect to see photos of Larson and her co-stars Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris surprise fans when showing up at screenings of their new superhero movie, which opens everywhere this weekend. Parris appeared at the charity BoxLunch charity in Los Angeles Thursday, while Vellani has quickly been booking media interviews to support The Marvels.
While the strike may not have ended in time for these actors to anchor glitzy premieres, any effort is better than none.

DreamWorks Animation has eliminated about 70 of its positions, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
“DreamWorks Animation reduced its workforce by approximately 70 positions,” a spokesperson told THR. “Roles affected were across corporate functions, feature, television and technology departments as part of an overall cost reduction.”
The news comes as Dwa readies its Nov. 17 release of Trolls Band Together, the third film in the hit franchise. Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake reprise their roles in the film, which also features the first new ‘N Sync song in more than two decades.
Earlier this year, Dwa released Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, which stalled at the box office, taking in $44.7 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
The studio had more success the previous year with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which pulled in $481 million worldwide and racked up a slew of awards, including an Oscar nomination for best animated feature film.

Brothers Donald Glover and Stephen Glover are teaming up to pen Disney+’s Lando series, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The deal, first reported by Above the Line, was made prior to the Writers Strike, which began in May. Justin Simien, who was previously attached to develop Lando, exited the Star Wars project prior to the duo signing on.
Disney announced in December 2020 that the Lucasfilm show was in the works. Donald Glover, who will star in the series, previously played Lando Calrissian in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. While the film bombed at the box office, Glover’s performance was well received.
The smooth-talking smuggler first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back, with original Lando actor Billy Dee Williams returning for Return of the Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
During a recent interview with THR, Simien spoke about the Lando project, and said he was uncertain about its future.

After the surprise tease at the end of Fast X, Universal is making it official: Dwayne Johnson is back for another Fast and Furious movie.
Johnson will star in an untitled Fast project, Universal and Johnson announced Thursday. Fast mainstay Chris Morgan penned the script. The return is a major reversal for the star, who had insisted, repeatedly, that he was done with the action franchise after clashing with Fast headliner Vin Diesel.
The new project also marks a return for Morgan, who sat out F9 and Fast X but penned six of the main franchise movies as well as the 2019 spinoff, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which starred Johnson and Jason Statham.
Johnson will also produce this Fast project with his Seven Bucks Productions partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Interestingly, joining Johnson on the producers list is Fast star and steward Diesel, who will produce with Samantha Vincent...

Marvel's "Blade" reboot starring Mahershala Ali is now the first major studio feature film to pause due to the WGA strike. According to The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit and Aaron Couch, the production was supposed to start filming in Atlanta next month but will now hold until after the writer's strike is resolved.
You may remember that as recently as April 28 we heard that the studio had hired yet another writer to take a crack at the script, and a very interesting writer at that. Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of "True Detective", was brought on board in a surprising move by Marvel Studios, surprising because it was so close to filming and because Pizzolatto is a very distinctive writer who has a reputation around town as sticking to his creative guns in a way that often doesn't jibe well with the very collaborative process at Marvel.

Jonathan Majors’ Magazine Dreams was a no-show at CinemaCon.
Searchlight and Disney steered clear of any mention of the film during Disney’s presentation at the annual gathering of theater owners in Las Vegas as Majors awaits a May 8 court date in New York on assault charges. Normally, the powerhouse specialty would have used CinemaCon to promote the movie, which is scheduled for a Dec. 8 release in theaters, during the heart of awards season.
The movie’s premise — an aspiring bodybuilder who flies into bouts of rage and violence — is a complicating factor given the allegations of assault against the actor, who has denied wrongdoing. One scene features his character on a date with a woman who becomes so uncomfortable she flees the restaurant. Majors is already experiencing career blowback, with Entertainment 360 and PR firm The Lede Company dropping him.
Majors’ rise from Yale Drama School to Hollywood star has been meteoric.

Jonathan Majors was arrested and charged with multiple misdemeanors Saturday after being accused of assaulting a woman during a domestic dispute.
The actor was arrested on suspicion of strangulation, assault and harassment around 11 a.m. in Chelsea, a neighborhood of Manhattan, according to a New York Police Department spokesperson. The woman sustained minor injuries to her head and neck and was taken to a hospital, police said.

The judge granted a limited order of protection and that the actor be released on his own recognizance after prosecutors requested supervised release and a full order of protection.

The 2023 Oscars were full of laughs, tears and cheers throughout the night from the presenters, winners, host and Hollywood audience. From host Jimmy Kimmel‘s slapgate jokes to Michelle Yeoh making history with her best actress win amid a big night for best picture Everything Everywhere All at Once, here are some of the night’s most memorable moments.
Host Jimmy Kimmel Mocks Will Smith’s Oscars Slap
Host Jimmy Kimmel had a lot to say about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during last year’s Academy Awards ceremony. His jokes started during the opening monologue of the Oscars telecast, with Kimmel alluding to the infamous moment while recognizing the Irish performers who were attending. “Five Irish actors are nominated tonight, which means the odds of another fight on stage went way up,” Kimmel quipped. The host went on to poke fun at the fact that Smith was given the...

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is looking to stay in the Tim Burton family. The actor is circling a role in Beetlejuice 2, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Warner Bros., which is behind the feature, was not available to comment. A representative for Ortega did not respond to requests for comment.
The news comes as Ortega hits theaters with Scream VI, which could land the top opening in the franchise’s 25-plus-year history.
Tim Burton, who helmed the 1988 film starring Michael Keaton, is expected to direct, with Keaton returning as well, according to sources. Production is eying a late May or early June shoot in London, but budget has not been set, resulting in a back and forth. If a deal is made, sources say Ortega would play the daughter of Lydia, the character played by Winona Ryder in the original.

Batman: Caped Crusader has found a new home at Amazon.
The streamer and retail giant has handed out a two-season order for the animated series that was scrapped at HBO Max last August. Caped Crusader landed at the Jennifer Salke-led streamer after producer Warner Bros. Animation shopped the project following the cost-cutting move that saw parent company Warner Bros. Discovery scrap the show more than a year and a half after ordering it straight to series. Other streamers, including Netflix, Apple and Hulu, also kicked the tires on the project that marks a reunion for executive producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, who previously collaborated on The WB Network’s beloved Felicity.
The animated series hails from Bruce Timm, Abrams and Reeves and was sold to a streaming rival as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s efforts to monetize content by selling projects to third-party buyers.

Earl Boen, the busy character actor best known for his stint as the criminal psychologist Peter Silberman in the Terminator film franchise, died Thursday in Hawaii, his daughter told The Hollywood Reporter. He was 81.
Ruby Harbin said her dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in November and died quietly in his sleep.
Born on Aug. 8, 1941, Boen amassed dozens of credits during his career. In 1984, he landed his most notable role as Dr. Silberman in James Cameron’s The Terminator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn. He reprised the role in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003).
One memorable scene in the first Terminator saw the character interrogate Biehn’s Kyle Reese, a freedom fighter from the future that the psychologist believed suffered from paranoid delusions. Nearly 40 years later, Biehn recalled fondly his time working with Boen on the scene.

Enjoying renewed interest from all corners in Hollywood due to his praised performance in the 2021 indie thriller Pig, Nicolas Cage has entered what can only be called a renaissance.

While he had done occasional studio voice work, with such as films as The Croods and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, he returned in earnest with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a meta action movie released in April by Lionsgate in which Cage plays an actor named Nick Cage. Then he booked a chewy role as Dracula in Universal’s upcoming vampire thriller Renfield. It began with an anonymous note and ended with the scuttling of a 35 million feature. Skydance was about two months away from starting production on Dallas Sting, an inspirational true-life tale that was to star Matthew McConaughey, when the film was scrapped Sept. 14. It was to focus on a high school-age girls soccer team that in 1984 defeated some of the best women’s teams in the world, and their coach, Bill Kinder.
McConaughey’s representative at WME received an anonymous complaint about Kinder, forwarding it to producers at Skydance and Berlanti Productions. Amid the shelving of the HBO Max film Batgirl and the clear desire of Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav to find new leadership for the DC universe, DC Films president Walter Hamada has come to the verge of exiting the studio and consulted with counsel, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Hamada has now agreed to remain in his post at least until the Oct. 21 release of the Dwayne Johnson film Black Adam, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. “He’s pausing,” says a source. “The decision has not been made to make this adversarial, yet.” Hamada could not be reached for comment.

The Lord of the Rings, the property that became a founding mythology for modern geek culture, returned to San Diego Comic-Con Friday with Amazon showing off a new trailer for the mega-budget The Rings of Power TV series. The panel kicked off with composer Bear McCeary and an orchestra (including a choir) performing music from the show for Hall H’s 6,000-strong crowd.
The pageantry set the tone for emcee (and noted Tolkien fan) Stephen Colbert to take the Comic-Con crowd to Middle-earth. The Rings of Power takes place during the Second Age. Attendees at the ongoing CinemaCon out of Las Vegas were treated to the first official footage from “Mission: Impossible 7” during Thursday’s Paramount presentation. That, of course, included footage of Tom Cruise’s latest death-defying stunts. While the movie (after several delays) isn’t coming out until May 27 of next year, viewers are already plenty excited based on the first look in Las Vegas.
“My heart is racing at the thought of the stunt Tom Cruise is doing in #MissionImpossible7,” TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven reported. “13,000 motor cross jumps, one year of base jump training, lots of skydiving. He’s driving off a ramp on a motorcycle, off a cliff, which will then turn into a base jump. #CinemaCon”
“Paramount shows a featurette on the signature stunt of M:i 7, which is a giant motorbike jump off a Giant cliff in Norway. They call it the hardest stunt Cruise has ever done.

CinemaCon opened with a bang in Las Vegas Monday night as Sony executives used their spot as the convention’s first presenters to decry day-and-date releases as “devastating” to the film industry, while doubling down on their commitment to an exclusive theatrical window, according to multiple reports from journalists in attendance.
The subtext was clear: Sony is an outlier among major studios; it’s the only one without its own streaming service and the only one that has not used the pandemic as an excuse to premiere films in theaters and for at-home viewing on the same date, a move that his drawn ire from theatrical exhibitors. But Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman put an even finer point on it when he congratulated 20th Century’s “Free Guy” on its box office performance, citing two reasons: “Number one, it’s terrific, and number two, you can’t watch it at home.

As you’ve surely heard by now, actor Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away earlier tonight at the age of 43. His family confirmed the heartbreaking news just hours ago, revealing that he had been battling colon cancer for several years. Given that he never made his diagnosis public, and continued to work steadily almost right up until his death, it came as a huge shock to everyone to learn that he had passed, and the internet is currently mourning the tremendous loss.
Already, tons of colleagues and notable figures in the industry have paid tribute to the incredibly talented actor and now, both Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige have weighed in with some thoughts of their own – which you can see for yourself via the tweets down below.

Michael Biehn reprised his most famous role, Kyle Reese from The Terminator, recently. Okay, it’s only for 30 seconds on Twitter, but it’s important nonetheless.
Aaron Couch of The Hollywood Reporter posted the video seen below and it’s amazing that Biehn’s monologue is almost verbatim from The Terminator when he tells Sarah Connor the stakes of the situation. He just replaces Terminator with coronavirus. It’s actually kind of surreal and sobering to hear him say words from a movie that can so easily be placed into real-life context.
Of course, we all need to do our part in spreading the word that the best thing to do to combat the coronavirus pandemic is to stay in our homes. And like Ryan Reynolds recently said on Instagram, it’s in our best interests to listen to celebrities because they know what they’re talking about.

Vin Diesel was adamant that he wouldn’t let the growing Coronavirus pandemic get in the way of Bloodshot hitting theaters on time, but with the crisis worsening by the day, it looks like he might have been a little too hasty. The vast majority of cinemas in the United States are now closed, and the actor’s latest action flick debuted at the worst possible time, failing to even crack $10 million in what turned out to be the lowest-grossing weekend at the domestic box office for 22 years.
The movie business is preparing itself for the worst, with a huge number of big name blockbusters recently seeing their release dates shelved indefinitely and analysts predicting that Hollywood is set to miss out on up to $20 billion in revenue due to the ongoing lockdowns being put in place around the globe. The ground between Disney and Sony may still be fragile when it comes to Spider-Man, so we won’t put too much pressure on either party here.
But as a great deal of the media-aware public know, the House of Mouse officially dropped their extensive streaming service, Disney Plus, yesterday. And while it makes available to its subscribers nearly the entire Infinity Saga, there are a few significant films missing – including Tom Holland’s two Spidey flicks.
Homecoming and Far From Home, the latter of which was the highest grossing movie the wall-crawler has ever been involved in, are both owned by Sony. So that explains why Disney Plus’ Marvel inventory has a couple of holes in it – a fact that the Mickey conglomerate is looking into.

Last night, Avengers: Endgame finally had its world premiere in Los Angeles, prompting a flood of glowing responses on Twitter.
Among the film’s first viewers was Aaron Couch from The Hollywood Reporter, who shared some good news for spoilerphobic Marvel fans everywhere. Apparently, about 90% of the footage that’s been officially released from the Avengers: Infinity War sequel was taken from the first 15 minutes of the flick.
This claim falls very much in line with comments made by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige earlier this year at the Golden Globes. When MTV News asked if the film’s marketing would mostly use footage from the feature’s first 15-20 minutes, the producer described the speculation as “somewhat accurate.” After several months’ worth of trailers and TV spots, it seems that the Feige has stayed true to his word.

The first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrived on Friday and it’s fair to say it went down a storm. Lucasfilm will likely be overjoyed with the reaction to the Episode IX teaser as the Star Wars fandom desperately needed something to unite it after the division caused by all the fighting about the relative merits of The Last Jedi over the past two years.
A lot of folks disagreed with the bold direction Rian Johnson took with the franchise in the 2017 installment of the saga, which has led to many rumors that the filmmaker’s planned spinoff trilogy won’t be happening anymore. The director himself has repeatedly dismissed these as baseless, but now we’ve heard from the horse’s mouth that Johnson is indeed set to make more Star Wars movies.

The rumors that point to Ben Affleck hanging up the cape and cowl continue to fester and honestly, they’re a bit upsetting to hear. Though we’ve only really seen him as Batman in two films so far, he’s left a pretty good impression and turned many doubters into fans. In fact, for a lot of DC supporters, he’s the only interpretation of the Dark Knight that they’ll accept on the big screen right now.
After seeing his work in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it became difficult to picture anyone else but him in the dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman. And though Justice League wasn’t a great movie, Big Ben certainly wasn’t to blame, as he gave us another interesting and exciting take on the Caped Crusader.
While it’s hard to say that Batfleck is the best version of the character,...

[This story contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War]
After years of buildup, Avengers: Infinity War has left Marvel fans cheering, emotionally drained, and ready for more. The team at Heat Vision has assembled like the Avengers (or at the very least, like Teen Groot and Rocket?) to take a closer look at the film as the dust settles, and speculate on what's next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Aaron Couch: Two months ago, I asked you all if Black Panther was the best Marvel Studios movie ever. Here we are again. There have been few comic book movies in...

Who is Pacific Rim Uprising for?
That's a question that cynics have asked since a sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's 2013 film was greenlit. The film from director Steven S. DeKnight won the battle at the U.S. box office this weekend, but did so with a rather tepid $28 million. Overseas, it fared much better at $122.5 million, with the tale of robots fighting monsters seeming to capture the imagination of Chinese moviegoers in particular (it scored $65 million in China).
So what is it that international audiences are seeing in Uprising that U.S. moviegoers are ignoring? Heat Vision editor Aaron Couch...

It's the second coming of the Merc with the Mouth.
Fans were treated to a new trailer for Deadpool 2 on Thursday, and it's the kind of internet event that must be talked about in depth. So the team at Heat Vision has assembled and is welcoming special guest Rob Liefeld — the comic book creator behind Deadpool, Cable and the X-Force — to take an uncomfortably close look at the footage.
Let the conversation begin.
Aaron Couch: Welcome Rob! The greatest line of the trailer has to be Deadpool announcing that his new superteam will be called X-Force, and Domino (Zazie Beetz) immediately...
