“Loved that she sported bushy eyebrows, wore colour unabashedly and flaunted her roots and identity as a Mexican with pride and aplomb.”
She said that it was her partner Sampath’s idea to make a music video where “I meet the icon Frida.”

Mumbai, Nov 23 (Ians) Singer Sona Mohapatra on Monday shared her experience with victim blaming with followers on social media.
"During my BTech Engg, walking to the microprocessor lab in a loose khadi green kurta with a salwar. Seniors whistling, speculating loudly about my bra size. One 'well wisher' walked up and asked why I wasn't wearing my dupatta 'properly', fully covering my b***s," she tweeted.
Sona in her tweet used the hashtag #INeverAskForIt, a movement that has been launched to protest against victim blaming, especially in the case of sexual assault survivors, who are frequently asked what they wore at the time of a sexual assault.
In a separate tweet, the singer urged everyone to share their ordeal with victim blaming. She tagged Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, singer Chinmayi Sripaada and a few others in her tweet.

Mumbai, Nov 2 (Ians) Singer Sona Mohapatra has reacted to the controversial statement that Kerala Congress Chief Mullapally Mamachandran recently made about regarding women.
"We women have lived surrounded by the violence of sexual intimidation and possible rape in our normal day to day lives. Surrounded by its energy everyday! We have learnt to live with it, fight it, yet pursue our dreams, keep our kindness. Slap Ur idea of self respect Mr Congress chief," Sona tweeted from her verified account on Monday.
The singer's tweet came as a reaction to a news piece that says Ramachandran has allegedly said that that a self-respecting woman would rather prefer to kill herself than publicly accepting that she has been sexually assaulted.
Recently, Sona also reacted to an allegedly derogatory remark made by actor Mukesh Khanna about women. Khanna has reportedly said that the #MeToo movement began after women started stepping out for work.

Actress Shweta Tripathi says the claim by Kangana Ranaut that 99 per cent of Bollywood is on drugs is an incorrect generalization, adding that such an assertion is a half-truth.
The "Masaan" fame actress, who impressed in recent digital releases such as "Cargo" and "The Gone Game", also said that Kangana Ranaut's allusion that actresses had to sleep around to get work and that outsiders make space in the "big bad world of cinema" only after compromising, would make for an interesting script, but that's not how Bollywood functioned.
"I think narratives doing the rounds that half of the people of the film industry are drug addicts, that female actresses are sleeping around to get work, and outsiders can make their space in the 'big bad world of cinema' only after compromising make for great and interesting scripts. No, that is not how we work here in Bollywood," Shweta told Ians.

Singer Sona Mohapatra has slammed actress Kangana Ranaut, saying that playing the messiah by using a tragic death is the worst act of opportunism.
The singer took to Twitter to share her viewpoint on Kangana, who has been in the news over the past weeks for her controversial comments about Bollywood's alleged drug culture as well as her abrasive attacks on celebrities including Jaya Bachchan and Urmila Matondkar who countered her opinion. Kangana also hit the headlines earlier with her statements related to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
"The number of misogynistic slurs spilling from her mouth now makes me wonder about the ‘feminist scholars' who had hated on me in 2017 when I'd called out Kangana. My choice of words I'm not too proud of but nevertheless had smelt the problem a mile away," Sona tweeted, while sharing a link to an article from 2017 which called out Sona for attacking Kangana.

“Shut Up Sona” was originally conceived as a showcase of Indian singer Sona Mohapatra’s music and artistic heritage, but after three years of filming, Deepti Gupta’s film morphed into something more.
The 90-minute documentary is an empowering exploration of the singer’s pursuit of gender equality, across India and in the music industry, in the face of deep-rooted misogyny and religious adversity.
Mohapatra was born in Cuttack in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, in a culturally Hindu household where she grew up watching her working mother hold “the shorter end of the stick,” before heading off to university in Bhubaneswar to be confronted by even more inequality for women. After cutting her teeth in the world of jingle making, her solo music career kicked off in 2007 with the release of her debut album, “Sona,” where she was already speaking up about the barriers faced by women in...
