The Senate voted Tuesday to pass a bill that would either ban TikTok from American app stores and web-hosting services or force its China-based parent company ByteDance to sell the video-sharing platform within nearly a year.
The bill, titled the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, would also create a process through which the president can designate certain social media applications with ties to foreign governments as a national security risk. The measure was approved by the Senate 79 to 18 — sending the legislation to President Joe Biden’s desk.

On Thursday, former NFL player and actor Oj Simpson died from cancer. Simpson made headlines in 1994 for the nine-month-long trial in which Simpson was acquitted of murdering ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in the so-called “trial of the century” after physical evidence pointed to Simpson’s guilt.
Years later, in 2007, Simpson was arrested on a robbery and kidnapping charge against a memorabilia dealer in Las Vegas. Simpson was sentenced to 33 years in prison but was released on parole in 2017, then officially released in 2021.
Simpson was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May 2023 and underwent chemotherapy treatment. In 2024, days before Simpson’s passing, his children, whom he shared with Brown, were reportedly made to sign non-disclosure agreements along with other members of his family. No deathbed confession from Simpson was reported by anyone who saw him in his last days.
News of Simpson’s death received international coverage.

Jon Stewart took the Biden administration to task over how it deals with Israel, pointing out the stark contrast between the U.S. government response to the Ukraine-Russia conflict and that over the war in Gaza.
On Monday’s episode of The Daily Show, Stewart took a “wellness check” on the war on Gaza, adding that “as the war has grinded on, justice is beginning to look like cruelty.”
In a segment the Daily Show has dubbed “The Futile Crescent”, the host looked at the Biden administration’s recent determination to uphold a rules-based order inherent to the U.S.’s “universal values” — but only in relation to the Ukraine conflict. Using clips of President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Stewart focused on their robust condemnation of Russian aggression against Ukraine, and in particular, their comments about Russian attempts to target and suppress the free press and weaponize food shortages against Ukrainians,...

Update, 5:40 Pm: Joe Biden is “outraged and heartbroken” by the killing of aid workers from Chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen on Monday by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.
Following up on remarks from the president quoted by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre today, the administration just released a full statement from Biden. And it doesn’t mince words over the tragedy that left seven members of the World Central Kitchen team dead.
“Even more tragically, this is not a stand-alone incident,” Biden said of the Idf’s actions and the spiralling humanitarian crisis coming out of the Jewish state’s response to the murderous attacks on Israeli citizens and soldiers on October 7 last year. “This conflict has been one of the worst in recent memory in terms of how many aid workers have been killed,” the president added as international condemnation of the bombing grows. “This is a...

A story that was widely shared by conservative politicos and right-wing media has been retracted by its publisher, the Daily Caller.
The piece claimed that the Biden administration banned religious-themed Easter eggs from a contest at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. In fact, the restrictions were long-standing ones from the American Egg Board that have applied for the past 45 years, across administrations including that of Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump.
“Following the publication of this article, the Daily Caller became aware of additional context that undercut the central assertion of this article and its newsworthiness,” according to the retraction notice. “The ban of religious symbolism on eggs as part of the White House Easter egg activities has been longstanding, dating back decades, and the Biden administration did not make any modifications to this rule.”

Lawmakers in Israel on Monday passed new legislation that allows the government to temporarily close foreign media outlets deemed to be a risk to national security. In the wake of the Israeli parliament approving the law, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to shutter Al Jazeera, saying it “will no longer be broadcast from Israel.”
Calling Al Jazeera a “terrorist channel,” Netanyahu wrote on X that he intends to “act immediately” to stop the news channel’s activity.
Responding, the Qatar-based network, which is one of the most widely viewed sources of news in the Arab world, said in part, “Al Jazeera holds the Israeli Prime Minister responsible for the safety of its staff and Network premises around the world, following his incitement and this false accusation in a disgraceful manner… Al Jazeera reiterates that such slanderous accusations will not deter us from continuing our bold and professional coverage, and reserves...

Seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen were killed in an Israeli airstrike after they delivered a crucial shipment of food to displaced civilians in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Israeli Defense Forces forces were responsible for the deaths in a video posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday. “Our forces unintentionally hit innocent people in the Gaza Strip,” he said. “As it happens in war, we are investigating the matter fully, we are in contact with the governments, and we will do everything possible to prevent this from happening again.

Updated: This past weekend saw a parade of Republican elected officials and conservative commentators blast the White House for recognizing Sunday as the Transgender Day Of Visibility, as it happened to fall this year on the same day as Easter.
That continued into Monday, with radio hosts highlighting the outrage and FoxNews.com devoting its 11th story so far over the flap.
At today’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called out Fox, noting that “we are at first … confused on their coverage. We are grateful that Fox agrees with President Biden about the importance of recognizing trans day of visibility.”
She then went on to read a tweet that Fox TV, the broadcast network sister division of Fox News, put out in 2021 that noted the Trans Day Of Visibility and read, “To all the transgender men, women and non-binary folx, we see you and stand with you.

In the aftermath of the suicide of Nex Benedict, a nonbinary high school student, the district attorney who investigated the case in Oklahoma announced that no charges would be filed in connection with the altercation that occurred the day before the tragic incident.
Nex, who identified as transgender and used he/they pronouns, got into a fight with fellow students at Owasso High School West Campus, northeast of Tulsa, on February 7.
After the fight, Nex’s mother escorted them to the hospital and reported the incident to the police. In a subsequent interview at the hospital, captured on body camera footage, Nex recounted that three students had assaulted them after Nex threw water on them in response to bullying directed at Nex and a friend due to their clothing choices.
According to Kunzweiler, the fight involved two groups of students who were previously unacquainted until their encounter during in-school suspension.

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill on Wednesday that could ban TikTok in the United States. The vote came with President Joe Biden’s support, amid a warning from his administration that China had used the popular social media platform to try to influence the 2022 midterm elections — and could do so again in this year’s contests.
The bill, which must still pass the Senate, would force TikTok’s China-based parent company ByteDance to sell the app within 165 days, or face a ban in the U.S. Several Democratic lawmakers,...

The House of Representatives has advanced a bill that could effectively ban TikTok within the United States. The legislation will now advance to the Senate, where it will likely face a steeper road to adoption.

Updated, with Clinton statement and details on arrangements: David Mixner, the activist and political strategist who lobbied — and protested — political figures in the movement for LGBTQ equality, died on Monday. He was 77.
Mixner suffered from complications from long Covid, a friend, Steven Guy, told The New York Times.
Mixner also was a playwright, having recounted his decades of activism in a series of plays including Oh Hell No!, which he performed in New York, Los Angeles and other cities in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and later 1969 and Who Fell Into the Outhouse? The stagings, benefitting major LGBTQ organizations, featured Mixner recalling his early years of rural poverty, his involvement in protests of the Vietnam war, his experiences coming out, living through the AIDS crisis and his support and break with longtime friend Bill Clinton when the then-president failed to end a prohibition on gays and lesbians in the military.

The results showed that Biden has obstructive sleep apnea, a-fib with normal ventricular response, hyperlipidemia, gastroespohageal reflux, seasonal allergies, spinal arthritis and sensory peripheral neuropathy of the feet, according to the White House physician, Kevin O’Connor. He is taking three common prescription medications and three common over-the-counter medications, O’Connor wrote.

Oklahoma teenager Nex Benedict was captured on video describing a fight that happened one day before their death.
Benedict, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, was 16 years old when they passed away. On February 7, Benedict was part of an altercation that occurred in the girls’ bathroom at Owasso High School.
Benedict recounted the events to an Owasso police officer in a 20-minute interview captured at a nearby hospital. Before the fight, Benedict claimed they poured water on a group of girls after the girls had allegedly made fun of their laugh and the way they dressed.
The girls then beat Benedict in the girls’ bathroom until they “blacked out.” Benedict hit their head on the bathroom floor during the fight. On February 8, Benedict suffered from headaches and was rushed to the hospital. Benedict died that day.

Joey Graziadei is clarifying that he definitely knows the difference between Gypsy Rose Blanchard and late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The Bachelor lead’s apology came after he accidentally mixed up Blanchard and Ginsburg earlier this month in a Betches video that went viral on TikTok, earning more than 1.6 million views.
When shown a photo of Blanchard during a game called “How Online Are You,” Graziadei said, “I do know who this person is. Is it Ruth? No? Is it Jinsburg? Ginsburg? Something like that. Am I wrong?”
Though the reality star mixed up their names, he knew a bit about Blanchard’s background, adding, “I know that she had something happen where she went to jail because of her mom. … I don’t know what I’m saying.”

It seems like nothing will stop Bachelor Nation from loving Joey Graziadei.
Last week, The Bachelor star stuck his foot all the way in his mouth when he mistook Gypsy Rose Blanchard for Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
It’s not really clear why he thought the convicted murderer was a late Supreme Court Judge, but the mistake was a whopper.
Joey was so embarrassed after the flub that he admitted he’d “never live it down.”
And that seems to be the case because the mix-up is still being brought up and will likely never really die.
Even after Joey apologized for the mistake, The Bachelor fans continue to have plenty to say, but they aren’t nearly as critical as you might think.

With his very first episode back, Jon Stewart has successfully returned The Daily Show to the cultural conversation — by drawing fire from Democrats.
Stewart’s return to Daily Show hosting duties Monday night opened with a 20-minute monologue going after Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Stewart especially mocked the current president after his disastrous press conference last week where Biden struggled to assure Americans that he was still cognitively capable of performing his duties.
Stewart seemed wholly aware his comments would lead to some left-side backlash, with correspondent Jordan Klepper asking Stewart on-air afterwards, “Did you save democracy yet with your ’90s brand of snark and both-siderism?”
And that’s precisely the sort of blowback that happened, with everyone from progressives to Elon Musk to the White House weighing in.

A Monmouth University poll released today showed that 18% believe that Swift is part of a covert government effort to help Joe Biden get elected this year. Almost half of respondents, or 46%, had heard of the premise, as the conspiracy theory took on new life in advance of the Super Bowl.
According to Monmouth, “Fully 71% of those who believe this identify with or lean toward the Republican Party and 83% indicate they are likely to support Donald Trump in the fall.”
Swift endorsed Biden in the 2020 election and was critical of Trump that year, so the idea that she would support the president again is not so far fetched. But the conspiracy theory is that she is some kind of secret operative working in Biden’s favor.

Now that the Super Bowl is over, the next speculation in Taylor Swift mania is whether she will be going to the White House for the traditional winning team celebration for the Kansas City Chiefs.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked whether Swift would be invited to the event, which is still unscheduled.
“That is going to be up to the Chiefs and obviously their decision to figure out who is going to come with them when they come,” Jean-Pierre said. “As you know, it is a White House tradition. I can’t speak to attendance and who will be here. But look forward to having them here and obviously congratulate them on a great win.”
Asked whether Super Bowl teammates gets a +1 when they are invited to the White House, Jean-Pierre laughed and said, “That’s a good question. I can’t answer that right now.”

President Joe Biden is “warming” to the idea of being more publicly critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as his country’s assault on Gaza continues unabated, The Washington Post reported.
The paper reported that Biden is becoming increasingly frustrated with Netanyahu, citing interviews with multiple sources familiar with internal White House discussions. Per the Post, the president and his aides are “no longer viewing Netanyahu as a productive partner who can be influenced even in private.”

Shocking pretty much no one, a new report claims the explicit AI-generated images of Taylor Swift emerged from the internet’s most infamous cesspool: 4chan.
In findings shared with Rolling Stone, the research firm Graphika said it sourced the images to a particular message board community on 4chan that basically made a game out of coming up with prompts for AI image generators that would skirt safeguards and create graphic images of famous people. (The tech publication 404 similarly traced the images back to 4chan in a story published last month.

The fallout from last week’s posting of nonconsensual artificial intelligence-generated deepfake nude imagery of pop superstar Taylor Swift has not slowed, with members of Congress speaking out on the matter, X (née Twitter) reinstating the ability to search Swift’s name after it had been disabled as the images tore across the platform, actors union SAG-AFTRA condemning the false images and legions of Swifties retaliating online.
Then came the burning questions: What is the source of these images and how did they spread?
Starting on Wednesday, one of the most proliferated fake images of Swift to initially appear on X attracted over 45 million views, 24,000 reposts, and hundreds of thousands of likes and bookmarks. It took 17 hours for the now Elon Musk-led microblogging platform to suspend the account of the verified (or paid, under Musk’s changes) user for violating policy.

Update, Wednesday: The White House released a video of Joe Biden and actor Chris Evans, in which the president presents the Captain America star with a pair of his trademark aviators. The gesture was met with an enthusiastic, “I love it!” from Evans.
“What you’re doing with the kids matters, so thanks for doing this,” Biden said, as Evans was appearing at an event to boost civic engagement. Biden also said, “I’m a fan.”

Taylor Swift’s fake romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is all a Pentagon psy-op to inject the singer’s woke politics into the great and manly American institution of the NFL. The games have been secretly rigged to assure that the Chiefs will win the Super Bowl, where Swift will take the field during the halftime show to announce her endorsement of Joe Biden’s reelection campaign to 100 million-plus live viewers, thereby helping to steal the election from the real current president Donald Trump.
Or some shit.
But that’s actually what’s floating around out there on the social network hellscapes, nudged along by a few adults who really should know better (Vivek Ramaswamy).

Taylor Swift’s name is no longer drawing up a blank space on X/Twitter.
Searches for the singer’s name were disabled over the weekend, following an excess of pornographic AI nudes of her flooding the social media platform, which also wiped all results for “Taylor Swift nude” or “Taylor Swift AI.” Now, X has reinstated the ability to search for her name.
“Search has been re-enabled and we will continue to be vigilant for any attempt to spread this content and will remove it if we find it,” reads a statement from X, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
The re-enabling of Swift’s name search comes on the heels of the White House weighing in on the controversy and urging Congress to “take legislative action,” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told ABC News on Friday. “We are alarmed by the reports of the … circulation of images that you just...

Will Taylor Swift make it from her Tokyo concert to Super Bowl Lviii in time to see Travis Kelce play in the big game?
When faced with critical and complex questions that concern all of America like this one, there’s perhaps no better team to put on the case than the uber-competent (fictional) staffers from NBC’s 2000s drama The West Wing.
Swift fans have resurfaced a clip from the series (below) where President Bartlet’s team grappled with the same issue, which helps explain how Swift could pull this off.
Basically: Swift resumes her Eras Tour on Feb. 7 in Tokyo and will play her final show there Feb. 10. The show will likely end around 9 p.m. local time. She then needs to get to Las Vegas to see the Kansas City Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11, which starts at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time. But...

Searches for “Taylor Swift” on Saturday are drawing a blank space on Twitter/X, as the social network is no longer on showing any search results for the singer after a proliferation of pornographic AI nudes flooded the service earlier this week.
The service also shows no results for “Taylor Swift nude” or “Taylor Swift AI” — the search terms widely used to circulate the illicit images. But benign-sounding searches, such as “Taylor Swift singer,” still pull up results.
The move follows the White House weighing in on the controversy on Friday, urging Congress to “take legislative action.” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told ABC News, “We are alarmed by the reports of the … circulation of images that you just laid out — of false images to be more exact, and it is alarming … While social media companies make their own independent decisions about content management, we believe they have an important role...

Sexually-explicit AI-generated images of Taylor Swift have caused alarm across the board, with major centers of power — including The White House, Microsoft, SAG-AFTRA, and more — now weighing-in on what the controversy means for the future of AI, and what steps are being taken to prevent further incidents like this one.
The scandal began when fake, crude images depicting Swift started circulating social media this week, with one image gaining over 47 million views on Twitter alone, before the account that posted them was suspended due to mass-reporting by Swifites. According to 404 Media, the viral images were traced back to a Telegram group chat where members shared AI content, sometimes made using Microsoft’s generative-ai tool, Designer.
Now, speaking to NBC News, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has expressed that the company finds the images “alarming and terrible,” and feels the pressure to “move fast” to combat nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfake images.

Washington, Jan 27 (Ians) The White House has pitched for legislation to protect people from deepfakes generated by AI, after the spread of fake photos of Taylor Swift went viral on social media this week.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the incident “alarming” and said it’s among the AI issues the Joe Biden administration has been prioritising, reports The Verge.
“Of course Congress should take legislative action. That’s how you deal with some of these issues. There should be legislation, obviously, to deal with this issue,” Jean-Pierre was quoted as saying.
The Swift deepfake images went viral on X, with one reaching 45 million views before being taken down.
The platform was slow to respond, with the post staying up for around 17 hours.
In a statement, X said that “posting Non-Consensual Nudity (Ncn) images is strictly prohibited on X and we have a zero-tolerance policy towards such content.

Taylor Swift is the latest victim of AI (Artificial Intelligence), as her explicit images went viral on social media yesterday. The pictures surfaced on X, formerly known as Twitter, and took as many as 17 hours to be wiped off. Swifties have lost their calm, and below are all the details you need on the unfortunate incident.
AI Technology may be helpful in achieving technical advancements in a film, but it poses huge threats to actors. Tom Hanks, Keanu Reeves, and Steven Spielberg have been among the few celebrities who have spoken against Artificial Intelligence. In fact, Scarlett Johansson filed a legal action against an app that used her voice for an online advertisement. It also remained one of the core elements of the Hollywood strikes.

Important people are speaking out against the creation of fake A.I.-generated images of Taylor Swift.
Fake sexually explicit photos of Taylor are spreading around social media right now and they were created using A.I.
The photos have promoted responses from SAG-AFTRA and from White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

SAG-AFTRA released a statement saying, “The sexually explicit, A.I.-generated images depicting Taylor Swift are upsetting, harmful, and deeply concerning. The development and dissemination of fake images — especially those of a lewd nature — without someone’s consent must be made illegal. As a society, we have it in our power to control these technologies, but we must act now before it is too late. SAG-AFTRA continues to support legislation by Congressman Joe Morelle, the Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act, to make sure we stop exploitation of this nature from happening again.

Pornographic, nude images of Taylor Swift that were generated using AI have been circulating on social media, provoking massive outrage among her fans and beyond.
The fake images — deepfakes — portrayed Swift in several sexualized positions while partially clad in Kansas City Chiefs garb among hordes of fellow Chiefs fans (a reference to her romance with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce).
According to The Daily Dot, the images were seen at least 22 million times before X cracked down on the posts. Swift fans rallied to report the images and also flooded the social media site with positive posts about the singer that contained keywords such as “Taylor Swift AI” to try and drown out the lurid fakes, causing the topic to trend Thursday morning. President Joe Biden addressed a roundtable of Jewish community leaders at the White House on Wednesday, calling the Hamas attack “the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust” and reporting photos of “terrorists beheading children.”
The president called the attack an act of “sheer evil,” and emphasized his administration’s support for Israel amid its war with Hamas.
“It is important for Americans to see what is happening. I have been doing this for a long time. I never really thought that I would see, have confirmed, pictures of terrorists beheading children,...

President Joe Biden on Monday released a statement applauding the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for reaching a tentative deal Sunday night, 146 days after the writers began striking.
“I applaud the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for reaching a tentative agreement that will allow writers to return to the important work of telling the stories of our nation, our world — and of all of us,” he said. “This agreement, including assurances related to artificial intelligence, did not come easily. I urge all employers to remember that all workers — including writers,...

As Drew Barrymore digs herself into a deeper hole regarding the return of her daytime talk show, lost in the debate is a conversation about the peculiar nature of syndicated TV.
One week ago, Barrymore ignited a firestorm when she announced her talk show would be returning amid the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. In the week since, tensions worsened and Barrymore, normally well-liked for her good-natured personality, intensified that criticism when she doubled down with a second, now-deleted, video message. If anything, her attempt to quell any criticism had the opposite effect.
Barrymore is at the eye of the storm, but she is not the only daytime host returning this upcoming week. “The Jennifer Hudson Show” and CBS’ “The Talk,” which is not syndicated, will launch new seasons on Monday, Sept. 18, as well as Sherri Shepherd’s “Sherri” and Karamo Brown’s “Karamo,” though those two shows are not struck or covered by the WGA,...
