Filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar, who is gearing up for his debut streaming series ‘Kaala’, has shared the reason behind casting 4 directors in the series as actors. ‘Kaala’ will feature four filmmakers – Danish Aslam, Qaushiq Mukherjee known as Q, Vinil Mathew and Shiva Anand taking on key roles in the show.
Talking about the same, Bejoy said: “It wasn’t a conscious decision but these were the names that popped in my head while casting. When we were writing, we didn’t have them in mind but as the casting process began, we got them one after the other, so much so that even the Hotstar team asked me if it was intentional and I said, no, these are the people I think will make an interesting casting. Also, a lot of them have not done any acting before, Shiva has acted before and Q has worked with me before but the...

Over the past quarter century, the Slamdance Film Festival has served as a launchpad for a number of now high profile filmmakers at the very start of their careers. Here is a baker’s dozen of some of the festival’s greatest discoveries.
Marc Forster
“Loungers”
Forster premiered his $10,000 debut in 1995 and grabbed the Audience Award, and has become one of the most versatile directors working, with other credits including “Monster’s Ball,” “Finding Neverland,” “Stay,” “The Kite Runner,” “Stranger Than Fiction,” “Quantum of Solace,” “World War Z” and “Christopher Robin.”
Rian Johnson
“Evil Demon Golfball from Hell!!!”
Johnson’s irreverent short film played the festival in 1996, launching a career that has dabbled in artistic indies and big-budget franchise blockbusters (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”).
Greg Mottola
“The Daytrippers”
The writer-director’s 1996 feature debut was produced by Steven Soderbergh and got Mottola work on cult-classic television series “Undeclared,” “Arrested Development,...

"He's not here again today, Maharaj." This looks disgusting. The first teaser trailer has debuted online for a film from India titled Garbage, the latest from controversial filmmaker Qaushiq Mukherjee, known as "Q" (who last directed Brahman Naman). The film is about a taxi driver in the city of Goa named Phanishwar, played by Tanmay Dhanania, who is an angry internet troll and maniac that keeps a woman as a slave in his apartment. One day he meets a new woman, and becomes her driver, whilst secretly stalking her online. Also starring Trimala Adhikari, Satarupa Das, Gitanjali Dang, and Shruti Viswan. This is the kind of weird film that is going to be upsetting to some, but possibly intriguing to others. It just premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this week, and is trying to find distribution. Watch out - this teaser is definitely Nsfw. Here's the first Nsfw teaser trailer (+ poster) for Q's Garbage,...

Q: 'At the start of the film we make it very clear men are making this film but we are completely aware of our shortcomings as a gender' “I feel very strongly about music because I'm a failed musician – which is why I'm making films, vicariously I'm living my life as a musician through filmmaking,” Brahman Naman director Qaushiq Mukherjee – Aka Q – tells me when I catch up with him to talk about his film after its European premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Certainly, he looks the part, wearing sunglasses inside a hotel on a fairly grey afternoon. Music plays a key role in his coming-of-age comedy that mixes quiz brain geekery with a trio of lads' desire to lose their virginity, driving the action on and sometimes acting as a 'chorus' between scenes. Q says his filmmaking process begins with the music.

"At least she spoke to you face-to-face." Netflix has unveiled a trailer for a film called Brahman Naman, an indie coming-of-age sex comedy set in the 80's in India. Actor Shashank Arora plays Naman, a witty, nerdy kid at Bangalore University who spends most of his time on the quizzing circuit with his two friends Ajay and Ramu, played by Tanmay Dhanania and Chaitanya Varad. The three of them want nothing more than to lose their virginity and try their hardest to make it happen. This looks kooky and hilarious, and seems to be a refreshingly unique take on the typical coming-of-age comedy. And it's in English. Have fun! Here's the first official trailer for Qaushiq Mukherjee's Brahman Naman, direct from YouTube: Brahman Naman is a comedy film set in the 80's and revolves around the misadventures of Naman and his friends in their quest to lose their virginity.

Ludo, the fantasy-horror-thriller by directors Qaushiq Mukherjee (Q) and Nikon, is continuing its dream run at top film festivals across the globe. The latest feather in the cap comes from the Belgrade International Film Festival, Serbia, where Ludo won the Award for Best Film.
Jury of the Frontiers selection consisting of Slobodan Sijan, Dragan Jovicevic and Marko Njegic, conferred the Nin award for Best film to Ludo. They added, “This is the work that goes furthest in its pushing of the frontiers, out of all of the films we’ve seen this year in this selection. ‘Ludo’ is one of very few films where it’s impossible to anticipate where the story might go next. In this rollercoaster film, whose aesthetics is actually complemented by a visible lack of funds, the director builds the story on the foundation of social drama, topping it off with an extraordinary visual interpretation of...

One does not typically see raunchy, teen sex comedies coming out of India, which is precisely why acclaimed director Qaushiq Mukherjee, known simply as "Q" set out to make such a movie. After his acclaimed film Gandu became controversial in India for its depiction of sexuality and nudity, Q has not shied away from such subject matter and instead has continued to address it directly with the aim to fill that gap in the Indian discourse. Yet the discussion of sexuality, the Indian caste system and the trials and tribulations of growing up in the rapidly changing 1980's India in is merely a set of undertones that harmonize with an otherwise fun, silly, and highly entertaining movie about a group of friends and their misadventures...

Qaushiq Mukherjee blends English literature and bovine sex jokes in 1980s-set film that departs from American high school comedy formula
Forget the jocks who spend their time dead-lifting and perfecting their wedgie techniques. It’s the Shakespeare-loving horny geeks we all need to watch out for. That’s the message from Qaushiq Mukherjee’s (aka Q) coming of age comedy set in 1980s Bangalore, with a focus on the love lives (or lack thereof) of a group of sex-starved “quizzers”.
Well, sex-starved might be taking it a bit far. Head geek Naman (played by Shashank Arora) does manage to fornicate … with a fridge door and a fish tank (really). But just as in Us teen comedies such as Porky’s and American Pie, he’s got his eyes set on something more unattainable. And as in those movies, there is a bully – in this case the suave cricket star Ronnie (Sid Mallya).

Ludo, named after the Indian version of Parcheesi, is about an evil game that’ll do more than just bore you to death. A valiant genre attempt is made, and there’s plenty of hellacious gore, but Ludo tells two, very separated stories. Technically, the stories themselves are connected, but the way in which we’re transported from a modern-day shopping mall to biblical-looking caves is jarring beyond comprehension, and neither piece seems to fit snugly together. Filmmakers Qaushiq Mukherjee and Nikon are essentially banging a square peg into a round hold, trying hopelessly to make the two fractured objects become one, and spoiler alert – they don’t succeed.
Ludo begins by introducing a group of two girls and two boys, all of whom just want to fulfill their carnal instincts. It’s a typical Indian night, which means shitty rock concerts, skeevy hotel rooms, and nowhere to go, until...
