Sydney Sweeney‘s second film of 2024 is finally here, let’s hope that it doesn’t turn into a disaster like the first one. Produced by Sweeney herself, Immaculate is a psychological horror film and it follows the story of a young nun who joins a convent in the Italian countryside. Her quiet life quickly turns into a nightmare because of the horrific secrets hidden in the convent. Directed by Michael Mohan, Immaculate also stars Simona Tabasco, Benedetta Porcaroli, and Álvaro Morte. So, if you loved Sweeney’s horror film here are some similar movies you should check out next.
The Convent
Co-written and directed by Paul Hyett, the 2018 film British horror film titled The Convent gives a similar atmosphere to Sweeney’s Immaculate. The Convent tells us the story of a group of young women seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War II in an isolated convent in the countryside.

“Catch Me a Killer” comprises many firsts: It is a series about South Africa’s first-ever criminal profiler, the first-ever woman to occupy such a position and, now, the first-ever series entirely shot in South Africa to be in International Panorama competition at Series Mania, Europe’s biggest TV festival.
“Catch Me a Killer” was commissioned by Showmax and produced by Kowalski Films with Lmp and Night Train Media. Abacus Media Rights (Amr), an Amcomri Entertainment company, handles world sales.
Based on the eponymous book by psychologist Micki Pistorius, “Catch Me a Killer” sees “Game of Thrones” breakout Charlotte Hope in the lead role as the psychology professor turned serial killer profiler. The 11-part series mixes drama, true crime and procedural to shine a light not only on Pistorius’s groundbreaking work, but some of South Africa’s most harrowing murder cases, beginning with the infamous Station Strangler, believed to...

The German legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the basis of two recent horror productions. The first of these “twin films” to receive a wide release is Erlingur Thoroddsen’s take, which shares the same title as Anthony Waller’s adaptation. And although both reimaginings feature demonic updates of that famous ratcatcher, only Thoroddsen’s story appears to underscore the musical component.
The Piper finds Charlotte Hope’s (The Nun) character Mel trapped in a familiar situation: her aspirations come at a great cost, and the consequences will be harmful. Here the young composer wants a future in her orchestra ensemble as well as the means to take care of her deaf daughter (Aoibhe O’Flanagan). Stealing a concerto from the estate of her recently departed mentor (Louise Gold) seems like the only option, but once the protagonist goes through with the plan, Mel’s conductor (Julian Sands) then...

The tale of the Pied Piper has fascinated audiences for some 740 years, but will there ever be a good film about it? People keep trying and failing. This latest effort comes from Erlinger Thoroddsen and is most notable for its cast, featuring one of the last performances by the ill-fated Julian Sands and also starring Charlotte Hope, best known as Miranda from Game Of Thrones. It has big ambitions, building its story around the longstanding occult notion of using music to encode forbidden ideas, but misses the fact that whilst one of the joys of music is its sense of consequence, any successful symphony must present its audience with challenges and keep them guessing before reaching its conclusion.
There is no guesswork to be done here, in a film which takes the most obvious route right from its opening scenes, never missing a note. It opens with Katharine (Louise Gold...

As South Africa marks three decades since its first democratic elections, a historic moment that dismantled the apartheid system and ushered in Black-majority rule, the country is at a crossroads. Inequality is rife. Crippling blackouts have pushed the economy to a tipping point. The ruling African National Congress — the party of Nelson Mandela — is in crisis, at peril of losing nationwide elections this year for the first time since it swept to power. For many South Africans, the heady promises of that democratic transition have largely been left unfulfilled.
It is a moment of reflection and uncertainty, too, for the country’s film and TV industry, which amid the broader soul-searching is still striving to find its identity. “In many ways, you can say the industry is growing. It’s booming,” says Layla Swart of Yellowbone Entertainment, whose credits include the Canal Plus-Showmax epic fantasy drama series “Blood Psalms,...

Underscoring the enduring popularity of crime drama, Abacus Media Rights (Amr), an Amcomri Entertainment company, has announced a slew of sales on two titles, led by Showmax Original “Catch Me a Killer,” a true crime drama with “Game of Thrones’” Charlotte Hope playing South Africa’s first and most famous serial killer profiler. Hope also headed “The Spanish Princess,” as Catherine of Aragon.
Amr has moreover closed further deals on fiction drama “Scrublands,” a scripted drama about the real reasons for a country town massacre. The sales comes as it is readying a screening of a third title, “The Boy That Never Was,” at this week’s London TV Screenings.

Back in June of 2021, it was announced that Julian Sands, best known around here for playing the Warlock in the 1989 horror film fittingly titled Warlock and then coming back for the sequel Warlock: The Armageddon, had signed on to star in a new genre project called The Piper, which puts a horrific twist on the legend of the Pied Piper. Sadly, it was only seven months later that we heard Sands had gone missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy. Six months later, his body was found. He did get to work on The Piper before he passed away, though, and the film is now ready to make its way out into the world. It’s set to receive a theatrical and digital/on demand release on March 8th, and with that date exactly one month away a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The late Julian Sands stars opposite Charlotte Hope in The Piper, and the trailer for the movie has landed. More here.
The actor Julian Sands left us in 2023, when he disappeared while mountaineering in California at the start of the year. Aged just 65, he left behind a wealth of acting work, including a handful of movies he’d shot but hadn’t been released.
Here’s one of them now. It’s called The Piper, and Sands co-stars with Charlotte Hope in the film. It looks a hearty mix of classical music and horror, and thus far, we have but a smattering of information about it. We shall thus duly share with you what we have.
The logline for the movie reads, quite simply:
When a composer must finish her late mentor’s concerto, she discovers that playing its music summons deadly consequences.

"She didn't want it performed!" Samuel Goldwyn Films & Tubi Films have revealed an official trailer for a supernatural horror film titled The Piper, a chilling tale of the Pied Piper. This initially premiered at the 2023 Screamfest Horror Film Festival last year, and it already opened in some European countries last fall. Set for a US release on VOD this March. When a young composer must finish her late mentor's concerto, she discovers that playing its music summons deadly consequences. Eerily enough, this is one of the final roles for British actor Julian Sands, who died in early 2023. His co-stars states: "The Piper is dark, creepy and kind of fun and his chilling portrayal of the orchestra's conductor had me genuinely terrified." The film also stars Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O'Flanagan, and Oliver Savell. With a score by composer Christopher Young. This looks pretty scary, an orchestra horror fairy tale thriller. "If you hear it,...

What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

Heartstopper star Kit Connor says he doesn’t want to be defined by the term “queer actor”, after his breakthrough role as bisexual school rugby star Nick Nelson in the Netflix mega-hit.
Connor, along with co-star Joe Locke, has become a star with the arrival of Heartstopper, which premiered on the platform in April 2022 and soon became its fifth most watched English language show, watched for a reported 53million hours worldwide.
But he received accusations of “queerbaiting” (appropriation by straight people of gay culture for kudos) after he was photographed hand in hand with actress Maia Reficco in November last year.
At the time, Connor broke his own retreat from social media to come out to his many followers – a decision he told the Guardian newspaper he now considers “frankly a bit rash” – when he posted:

African streaming service Showmax has inked a two-series slate deal with Tshedza Pictures, the South African production company behind the International Emmy-nominated telenovela “The River,” the company announced Tuesday at the start of the Joburg Film Festival.
“Adulting,” Tshedza’s first Showmax Original, is an eight-part drama series set in the parallel universes of four varsity friends. Their strong bond has held them together even as their journeys in life have taken them in very different directions — a bond the show’s creators describe as “the bromance of the decade.”
Tshedza’s second Showmax Original, “Outlaws,” is a cross-cultural love story that plays out in the dangerous world of cattle-theft syndicates in the lawless land on the border between Lesotho and South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal region.
“Adulting” is set to premiere in the first half of 2023, while the 40-episode epic drama series “Outlaws” is expected to be delivered in the second half of the year.

LevelK has boarded Icelandic crime drama “Cold,” directed by Erlingur Óttar Thoroddsen and based on the bestselling book “The Undesired” (“Kuldi”) by Yrsa Sigurdardóttir. Still in production, it was recently pitched at Venice Gap-Financing Market.
The story centers on Óðinn, living alone with his daughter Rún. As he investigates decades-old deaths at a juvenile treatment center, he begins to suspect that the sinister secrets are connected to his ex-wife’s mysterious suicide. As well as his daughter’s strange behavior.
“Erlingur is an established, talented director who respects the audiences and finds it fascinating to thrill them,” says LevelK’s CEO Tine Klint.
“We were captured by his take on the book, his style and the entire team behind the production.”
Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Sara Dögg Ásgeirsdóttir and “Woman at War” lead Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir are all set to star.
“On the surface, ‘Cold’ certainly seems like a classic Nordic noir.

The Venice Film Festival’s market is kicking off with an attendance level close to its 2019 pre-pandemic days and strong interest in feature films and VR works being pitched at its gap-financing platform
“We already have a total of more than 2,400 industry professionals registered to attend, which is close to pre-pandemic levels since in 2019 the number was 2,700 [at the end of the market],” says Pascal Diot, head of the Venice Production Bridge, as the informal mart is known.
Of these, 1,700 are accredited with the Vpb’s Golden Trade pass, while the remaining 1,000 are registered as part of film delegations.
Diot notes that despite the healthy attendance figure, there is clearly a reduced Asian presence this year “Very few Chinese, almost no Japanese, very few Koreans,” he says. A small delegation is coming from Taiwan which, along with France, is a country in focus this year. There is also a much smaller industry presence from Latin America,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Camelot,” the Season 2 premiere of “The Spanish Princess.”
When “The Spanish Princess” returns for its second season, Queen Catherine (Charlotte Hope) and Henry VIII (Ruairi O’Connor) are ruling together over the country as the house of Tudor.
When the audience rejoins the royal couple, they are closer than ever; she has given birth to a royal heir; her father, King Ferdinand of Spain (Antonio de la Torre), is coming to visit the royal court, and the costumes are just as lavish and sumptuous as ever.
Bold prints, colors and embroidery are all behind designer’s Pam Downe’s looks for Queen Catherine. Her silhouette is sleeker now that she has ascended to power. But it’s a rocky road ahead for Catherine, as the Spanish monarch has to tackle different viewpoints while the royal heir is needed to anchor her relationship and her future.
