At 70, the outsider movie hero is releasing his first album. He muses on music, the demise of film and finding joy in mistakes
There are few film-makers quite as particular about music as Jim Jarmusch. Over the years, he’s enlisted Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA to score his hitman-meets-samurai flick Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, had Tom Waits and Iggy Pop jacked up on caffeine and locking horns in a thick swirl of smoke in 2003’s Coffee and Cigarettes, and got Neil Young to let rip some improvised guitar for the soundtrack to Dead Man. Not to mention that his films feature acting turns by everyone from Joe Strummer to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and he directed a documentary on the Stooges along the way.

Jim Jarmusch said that his upcoming feature will likely go into production this fall — but that it also could have no music.
“The film we’re preparing now for late this year to shoot, probably, I think, may have no music,” Jarmusch said during the 2023 Overlook Film Festival as part of an “Only Lovers Left Alive” anniversary panel (via The Playlist).
Jarmusch continued, “It’s a very subtle film; it’s very quiet. And I think music could move it too much one way — it’s a funny and sad film, right? It sort of has both woven in. I don’t know if I want to have music to add some other thing over it. It doesn’t really want it so far.”

Jeff Beck played his first gigs on a guitar he built himself, plugging in with local bands in the London suburbs from age 13, before honing his craft at Wimbledon School of Art, studying the artistry of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Beck mixed the virtuosity and speed Les Paul displayed on radio broadcasts, and the heaviness of even the most melodic Gene Vincent records into his own sound. Beck transformed The Yardbirds from blues purists to proto psychedelia pioneers before inventing hard rock on The Jeff Beck Group’s 1968 Truth album. A new Jeff Beck Group came out with Rough and Ready, infusing fluid jazz phrasings onto R&b ensemble rhythms.
It’s been said Pink Floyd considered asking Beck to join after Syd Barrett left. Beck turned down an invitation to replace Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones for a project with Vanilla Fudge bassist and vocalist Tim Bogert,...

With Hocus Pocus 2 hitting Disney+, a whole new generation will be introduced to the wicked Sanderson Sisters running amok in Salem, Massachusetts this Halloween. And one of the most iconic scenes in the Halloween staple is that dance sequence. You know the one: When Winifred Sanderson, played by the formidable Bette Midler, takes the stage at the town’s Halloween party in city hall and performs a version of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put A Spell on You,” leaving the majority of the adult residents in a state of hypnosis whereby they are set to dance until they die.
Despite clocking in at under five minutes long, the scene is so memorable that Hocus Pocus 2 will attempt to recreate the magic of the original, this time with Midler’s Winifred Sanderson performing a rendition of Blondie’s “One Way Or Another.” But can it live up to what came before?...

If you’re a fan of both horror and soundtracks, like me, you know there’s an embarrassment of riches to collect– especially in the current golden age of boutique labels like Waxwork Records and One Way Static. Some of these horror soundtracks are highly uncommon, not because they’re for obscure films or TV series, but because they break the mold in numerous ways.
Read on for some of the most unusual horror soundtracks ever released….
And feel free to add your own oddities in the comments!
Monster In My Pocket (1992)
This might just be the most unusual soundtrack on this list, given that it’s for a toy line! It’s a shame I didn’t pick this up as a kid, because I loved Monster In My Pocket toys and this Halloween-y compilation sounds right up my alley. (I probably would have worn out the cassette playing it year round.

Tuesday’s Short + Feature: These Boots and Mystery Train
Music is at the heart of this program, which pairs a zany music video by Finnish master Aki Kaurismäki with a tune-filled career highlight from American independent-film pioneer Jim Jarmusch. In the 1993 These Boots, Kaurismäki’s band of pompadoured “Finnish Elvis” rockers, the Leningrad Cowboys, cover a Nancy Sinatra classic in their signature deadpan style. It’s the perfect prelude to Jarmusch’s 1989 Mystery Train, a homage to the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll and the musical legacy of Memphis, featuring appearances by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Joe Strummer.

If Jim Jarmusch were a type of music, which one would he be? Over the course of three decades as a filmmaker, he’s worked with a wide variety of musicians: John Lurie, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Joe Strummer, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Jack White and Meg White, Gza and RZA, and on and on. His own band, SQÜRL, plays droning avant-garde noise rock in a vaguely Boris vein. One musical genre Jarmusch decidedly does not embody, however, is punk—his sensibility is far too laid-back to express that sort of raw power. So while it’s not surprising that he’s chosen to make a documentary about Iggy Pop And The Stooges (Iggy having previously played small roles in Dead Man and Coffee And Cigarettes), viewers making the same demand as Gimme Danger’s title will likely be disappointed. Considering how cheerfully its subject courted controversy, this is a chummy...

Actress Lucie Lucas, director Gabe Klinger, and actor Anton YelchinYou may already know the work of Brazilian-born American Gabe Klinger, perhaps through his writing as a critic for Cinema Scope and Sight & Sound, or through his programming at such venues as the Museum of Modern Art and the International Film Festival Rotterdam. In 2013, Klinger leapt behind the camera for his delightfully idiosyncratic debut film, Double Play, a documentary twofer chatting with and exploring the work of two distinctively different yet unexpectedly compatible American filmmakers, Richard Linklater and James Benning. This move to documenting (and combining) favorite filmmakers seemed like a natural extension of Klinger's advocacy in print and work at cinematheques and film festivals. Yet rather than remaining in the documentary mode, for his follow-up Klinger has gone overseas to Portugal to make a cleverly time-addled romance that's at once elated and melancholy. Porto, taking place in a dreamy, remembered...

I could say it’s not worth paying attention to The Voice coaches’ comments — which, expressed in paint colors, would range from Rose-Colored Glasses to Fawn(ing) Grey to Sugar-Coated.
But then you’d miss the subtle, sometimes hilarious subtext of Blake, Pharrell, Adam and especially Xtina when they deliberately avoid comments about actual singing — turning everything to pure comedy in the process. (Sample critique: Ms. Aguilera’s “You’ve got that girl-vote goin’ for ya” after mega-hot Corey Kent White hit maybe 60 percent of his notes at best while covering a Jason Aldean ditty.)

'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Soundtrack Features Beyoncé, The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Sia, And More
The soundtrack details to everyone’s favorite “Twilight”-fan-fiction-turned-Kindle-porn’s film adaptation has been released, so Danny Elfman fans can finally stop pretending “Fifty Shades of Grey” will not be on his resume of film scores next to “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Batman." Though, it's easy to see how Elfman is simply tackling another kind of fantasy with this erotica drama featuring "unusual behavior." Apart from a couple of tracks from Elfman’s score, the “Fifty Shades of Grey” soundtrack includes yet another cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell On You,” this time by Annie Lennox (this writer’s favorite is the Creedence Clearwater Revival version, especially since his car was stolen with Creedence tapes and a briefcase full of business papers inside). We also get Beyoncé's “sensual” new version of “Crazy in Love," along with tracks from veterans like The Rolling Stones and Frank Sinatra (clearly,...

She & Him -- the sunny pop duo consisting of "New Girl" star Zooey Deschanel and indie guitar ace M. Ward -- are ready to tackle the "Classics." The twosome are making their major label debut this fall with a Columbia Records album full of timeless standards, which the press release assures us will be "carefully-selected," and not just randomly chosen. Although no track listing has yet been released, "Classics" will no doubt reflect Deschanel and Ward's eclectic musical taste, which tends to lean heavily on '60 pop. Together, they've previously covered The Beach Boys' "I Can Hear Music"; Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell On You"; Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got a Hold On Me"; The Beatles' "I Should Have Known Better" and Blondie's "Sunday Girl." They also released a Christmas album in 2012. Adding to that old-timey feel, She & Him recorded the new album live in the studio,...

Last month, the startlingly addictive reality show RuPaul's Drag Race, in which drag queens compete to snatch the crown of America's next drag superstar, started up for its fourth go around the track. This season is looking to be, as is the lingo, fierce. The new crew seems talented -- spunky and inventive, with an eye for the kinds of drama that make for "good television." Still, for a big-time show about a subcultural community, there's a lot of scary subtext bubbling under snappy comments and titular editing.
The racial polemics of RuPaul's Drag Race have been evident from the first season, when BeBe Zahara Benet was crowned over Nina Flores and Rebecca Glasscock due, in part, to her Miss-America-style appeals for health awareness in her native country, Cameroon (birthing her trademark call, "Camarooooon"). Back then, a fellow African-American contestant, Akasha, expressed her desire to be "a stripper or a...

Austin-based retro-r&B act Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears broke beyond regional favorite status with the 2009 album Tell ’Em What Your Name Is!, a set of energetic, horn-stoked songs drawing on the traditions of James Brown, Howlin’ Wolf, and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. The band’s follow-up, Scandalous, doesn’t vary the formula one drop: It’s all chicken-scratch guitar and deep, funky horns, over which Lewis rants and grunts like a mush-mouthed street crazy. This is a party record, wholly unconcerned with painstakingly recreating the past (à la Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings) or pushing the genre into the future (à la ...

Hollywood Week continued on "American Idol" Thursday night, as the remaining 100 contestants performed solo numbers in hopes of becoming America's "next top adult contemporary star."
Historically, this is the week where the front-runners solidify their lead going into the semi-finals. Think David Archuleta's "Heaven." Think Andrew Garcia's "Straight Up." Think Matt Giraud's "Georgia on My Mind." It's also when early faves flame out spectacularly. See: Josiah Leming.
