After exploring the 90s in the previous two entries, V/H/S/85, the sixth(!) entry in the V/H/S franchise, throws things back to the decade where VHS ruled the roost – once again using the found-footage format to tell a handful of spooky stories from directors David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.
After a brief flick through 80s television, replete with a pause on an Unsolved Mysteries-style show called Total Copy, which tells the story of Rory a test subject at Stamer University, to open proceedings. A show that the film returns to throughout its running time before wrapping things up in traditional anthology fashion and revealing Rory’s connection to the shorts we’ve just watched.

If the above image doesn’t make it abundantly clear, director Scott Derrickson brings a rather bloody, violent segment to V/H/S/85 with “Dreamkill.”
Derrickson, who needs no introduction, recently directed the horror blockbuster The Black Phone for Blumhouse and previously helmed horror favorites like The Exorcism of Emily Rose. With “Dreamkill,” Derrickson and writing partner C. Robert Cargill evoke the gritty horror of their nightmarish feature Sinister. It fits right at home with the grainy textured horrors packaged in V/H/S/85, one of the most cohesive installments of the popular anthology franchise yet.
That’s not a surprise to the director, who spoke with Bloody Disgusting about V/H/S/85 after the film’s Fantastic Fest debut.
“I think it’s inevitable that the film as a whole would come out looking the way that it does because you’re talking about VHS materials at the very early stages of its consumer usage,...

This year’s Blood List has named the 13 best genre scripts around town, and in its sixth year the annual screenplay contest is expanding its scope to include hot books, TV pilots, and young scribes ripe for signing. Taking top honors in 2014 is sci-fi thriller Bird Box from The Thing and Final Destination 5 scribe Eric Heisserer, an apocalyptic tale of a woman trying to lead her children to safety – all three blindfolded – after monsters descend on earth that turn people insane on sight. Universal set Heisserer to adapt the manuscript from Josh Malerman in 2013 for Mama helmer Andy Muschietti. Previous Blood List alumni include Black Swan, Stoker, Warm Bodies, and the upcoming Blumhouse thriller The Boy Next Door.
Like the Black List naming the top unproduced screenplays circulating around Hollywood, the genre-focused Blood List taps exec votes to determine each year’s best unmade horror, sci-fi, and thriller scripts.

It’s time you asked yourself a tough question: when was the last time you had a genuine interest in seeing a Vince Vaughn movie? I’ll go ahead and start things off myself. Wedding Crashers. And Wedding Crashers was released 10 years ago. At first glance, Vaughn’s newly announced film The Politician looks to continue the trend of Vince Vaughn films the general public has no vested interest in. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will star as a holder of elected office who’s caught in the act with a couple prostitutes. Rather than stand up and face his own failings, this politician gives a collective “ehhhh, the hell with this” to the nation and goes on the lam. At which point the FBI, the Us Marshals and a drug gang all tear after him. But when the news broke, something curious bubbled up around it, just barely noticeable from our current position of general...

The found footage flick As Above, So Below, directed by John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine, Devil), will be in theatres on August 29th; and during the San Diego Comic-Con, Evan Dickson had a chance to speak with them about it and more. Read on for the skinny.
On going indie (or at least more indie-minded) after being in the studio system for a while: "After Devil we decided to get back to our homemade aesthetic, and it took a couple of years to sort of rebuild what we were doing."
"This last year we made two movies, this one and The Coup, which is coming out March 6th. We almost made that one after Devil with Lionsgate, but that would have been more of the studio version with a different cast. At the time we were bummed, and it took awhile to rebuild it, but I think it ultimately became a better movie.
