Plot: A thief and his team find themselves on an epic quest, one putting him in search of his daughter. Monsters, mayhem, and more ensue – with a healthy dose of humor.
Review: In this year of sequels, we have something a little different but very familiar to many. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, directed by John Francis Daley (who you may remember from Freaks & Geeks) and Jonathan Goldstein, is another big-screen adaptation of the popular interactive game. The last time a D&d movie played in the cinema was the less-than-stellar 2000 feature starring Justin Whalin and Jeremy Irons, which made little of an impression. It certainly didn’t meet the expectations of critics or audiences. At all. The upcoming film stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez as Edgin and Holga, hapless thieves on a desperate journey. You have to admire John Cena’s determination to hit it big in the acting business, as he looks to follow in Dwayne Johnson and Dave Bautista’s footsteps by making a seamless transition from the squared circle to the silver screen. Already a millionaire countless times over, the 43 year-old comfortably reigned as the biggest star in professional wrestling for over a decade and could have easily remained the industry’s main draw, but instead decided to make the jump towards Hollywood.
2021 is poised to be the breakout year of Cena’s acting career, too, as he plays the villain in Fast & Furious 9 and lends support as Peacemaker in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, the latter of which is also getting a spinoff series on HBO Max. The last time a former grappler joined the Fast franchise, it coincided with a massive increase in critical acclaim and box office takings,...

The onscreen exploits of stuntwomen, and their off-screen battles for fair and equal treatment, is explored in Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story, a new documentary from director April Wright for Shout! Studios that debuts September 22 on digital platforms.
Narrated by Fast & Furious franchise star Michelle Rodriquez and based on Mollie Gregory’s 2015 best-seller, the film chronicles the lives of women who perform the stunts in some of Hollywood’s biggest action sequences — from the early days of silent movies to today’s blockbusters. The producers are Stephanie Austin, Michael Gruskoff and Marion Rosenberg.
“These unheralded heroines are the generations of stuntwomen who risked their lives in front of the camera, while behind it they fought for equal rights with male stunt performers, battled sexism and harassment, sustained life-threatening injuries and returned to the fray after each battle,” the producing team said in a joint statement.

Trailers for upcoming movies have been dropping left and right lately. You might even say they’ve been coming fast and furious (sorry). Between Black Widow, No Time To Die, Wonder Woman 1984 and yesterday’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, hype for next summer’s slate of films has officially begun.
Another preview to look forward to though is Fast & Furious 9. We’re less than six months away from the movie’s release and have yet to see anything from it. Not even a post-credit scene to tease it in this past summer’s Hobbs & Shaw.
Speculation and anticipation will soon be over though as Vin Diesel has taken to his Instagram account to announce that the first trailer for Fast & Furious 9 will drop in January. We still don’t know the exact date, but apparently, Diesel will be revealing that information on December 18th.

September 12th marks a heart-wrenching anniversary for the Fast and Furious family.
For today is Paul Walker’s birthday, who so tragically died in a traffic accident mid-way through the production of Furious 7, leading to an extended shooting hiatus and a period of grieving for Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Dwayne Johnson, and many of the other core figures that make up this billion-dollar franchise.
What followed was a total re-working of Furious 7 – so much so, in fact, that James Wan’s star-studded actioner became a heartfelt tribute to the man who lost his life far too young. And today, to mark what would have Walker’s 46th birthday, the likes of Vin Diesel, Dwyane Johnson, and Meadow Walker have all posted Instagram tributes remembering the star himself.
No words can properly capture the raw emotion of each post, so we’ll leave you in their company:...

This is one family feud we’re likely to never see the end of. Despite Hobbs & Shaw being a direct spinoff of the Fast & Furious films, The Rock is once again throwing shade at his old co-stars.
This time, Dwayne “Won’t Let It Go” Johnson has taken to Instagram to keep the fires burning. Then again, Tyrese Gibson needs to cool it with the shade as well. Just a month after Gibson poked fun at Hobbs & Shaw‘s weak opening box office numbers though, and basically reignited the feud, The Rock’s now fired back with the following post:

Fast and Furious 9 is shaping up to be a major blockbuster event, cast included. Though the franchise’s latest is losing Dwayne Johnson – not entirely, mind you; you’ll be able to see him drive around recklessly next month in Hobbs & Shaw – recent additions like Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren, as well as the official return of fan favorite Michelle Rodriguez ensure that the film’ll have no problem running on star power.
And that’s all without mentioning John Cena.
Yes, it seems that the road-race franchise shares an “out with the old, in with the new” philosophy with its WWE cast members, as Cena’s slated to make his first appearance in the ninth action-packed addition to the series. But in the month since we first heard this news, there really hasn’t been much else floating around about him or his role.

Steve McQueen’s Widows is a thriller almost uncomfortable with thrills. Though it has its fair share of mayhem (this is a very violent picture), a ferocious cast, and a plot with several twists and turns, the 12 Years A Slave director’s latest movie, which he co-wrote with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, is slow and methodic, fueled by fear and desperation, rather than the usual suspect, greed.
The usual suspect, however, does make a quick appearance in the form of Harry Rawlings (Liam Neeson), the leader of a proficient robber crew. But Widows, practicing in genre-reversal storytelling, has no place for him, and after a brilliant, adrenaline-pumping opening sequence which combines the events of their latest heist with those of the domestic day leading up to it, Harry and his crew are dead, stripping their titular wives of physical and financial security.

12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen is eyeing a musical as one of his next projects.
The director, who is promoting Viola Davis-fronted crime drama Widows, which opens this month, told British current affairs series The Andrew Marr Show, “I want to do a musical. I want to make myself happy. Right now, [the world] is dark, it’s heavy, there’s no ifs, buts, maybes about it, it’s so unsure and uncertain and I think I need to shake off the blues and make us all happy.”
It would mark a new direction for the director and Turner Prize-award winning artist, who has previously directed films such as historical drama Hunger and sex addiction feature Shame. His latest feature Widows is released in the UK on November 6 and in the U.S. on November 16. The drama, which McQueen wrote with Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn, is based on Lynda La Plante’s 1983 ITV series.

Zac Efron and his longtime friend Michelle Rodriguez seemed to have taken their relationship to a new level while vacationing in Italy and Sardinia over the last couple of weeks.
Zac Efron & Michelle Rodriguez Kiss At Sea

For the day out at sea, Rodriquez sported a black and white striped bikini, putting her now famous abs on display. Efron, looking fit himself, donned green swim shorts and black wayfarer sunglasses.

Robert Rodriguez’s Machete was a hilarious tribute to grindhouse cinema that offered up all the violence and sex you might expect from a movie starring Danny Trejo as a character named after a weapon.
Rodriguez obviously had a good time making it, though, because the sequel, the subtly-titled Machete Kills, which will be released at some point next year (the official date is currently unknown), looks to be offering up all sorts of mayhem, this time with Mel Gibson as the bad guy (no, he isn’t playing himself).
The last movie didn’t shy away from its exploitation roots in the casting of several highly attractive, barely-clad women, and the sequel certainly looks to be reprising that particular element. Stare in wonderment at the image above, then, which is the first official shot we have of blonde bombshell Amber Heard from the upcoming flick.

Here's a quick casting update letting you know that Luke Evans will play the villain in Fast and Furious 6. Earlier this month we learned that he was offered the role, and now it looks like he has taken it, as he's in the final stages of negotiations.
The actor joins Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriquez, and possibly Gina Carano in the heist film that is said to be "their most dangerous adventure yet."
Evan's has recently been seen in Immortals, The Raven, and will also be in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. I'm sure Evans will make a great villain in this franchise, and I'm looking forward to seeing Justin Lin's transition from street racing to heists.

According to the sources at Latino Review, Doctor Who star David Tennant has been talking to director Justin Lin via Skype about possibly joining the cast of Fast and Furious 6.
They offer no information on whom he would play in the film. No official offer has been made, but it would be pretty cool if things worked out. I would love to know who what kind of role he would take on.
If cast, he would join Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriquez, possibly Gina Carano, and Luke Evans in what's being described as "their most dangerous adventure yet."
The sixth installment of the franchise, which will be a heist film, starts shooting this month and is scheduled for release on May 24th, 2013.
Do you think Tennant is up for the role of a hero or a villain?...

Immortals star Luke Evans has been offered the role of the main villain in director Justin Lin's Fast and Furious 6. This is the same role that they wanted Jason Statham to play, but because he couldn't do it they moved on to Evans who is also a pretty solid choice. Sure, he's no Statham, but I think he'll end up doing fine in the role if he ends up accepting the offer. The actor can currently be seen in The Raven, and he also has a role in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, which comes out later this year.
Evans would join Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriquez and possibly Gina Carano in "their most dangerous adventure yet" which is going to be a heist film.

Lots of films hitting Blu-Ray/DVD this week, including some very popular theatrical releases from earlier this year.
Battle: Los Angeles: The film stars Michelle Rodriquez, Aaron Eckhart, and Bridget Moynahan. It is based on the 1942 Battle of Los Angeles incident in which a fear enemy attacked later deemed a false alarm caused chaos in the city. DVD bonus features include behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Red Riding Hood: Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family's displeasure. The village is also dealing with the return of a wolf who has traumatized the villagers. DVD extras include an alternate ending, audition tapes, featurettes.
Hall Pass:A couple of married guys are granted the opportunity to do whatever they want and sleep with whoever they want for one week by their wives. Things get a little out...

Instant Netflix
Welcome to our latest stab at a weekly DVD column, as we attempt again to find a novel or amusing way to repackage opinions expressed in earlier reviews. Because many of you have already seen these movies, and because the readers often value the Pajiba community's opinions as much as the critics, I encourage you all to weigh in with your own opinions in the comments, particularly of the Must See Titles on Netflix Instant.
And before we get into this week's regular DVD releases, we will start with those must-see titles that just hit Instant Netflix. The first is Harry Brown, which Prisco went apeshit for last year: "There's just one man, upset that his friend was murdered, taking out the trash. And goddamn is it fun to watch ... Michael Caine is simply awesome as Harry Brown. You never once doubt his character. There's more depth in...

Following the release of last year’s controversial Skyline – the Brothers Strause’s sophomore effort which may or may not have plagiarised Battle: Los Angeles, a film the brothers had previously worked on – Jonathan Liebesman’s latest film was left looking like the White Knight of alien invasion movies.
How fitting, then, that Battle: Los Angeles should star Aaron Eckhart – Gotham’s very own White Knight – as Staff Sergeant Nantz, a retiring marine left fighting almost as many demons as he is extraterrestrial invaders, having infamously lost his entire platoon in a previous engagement. Dragged back into battle by the film’s antagonistic mess of flashing biotechnology and flailing tentacles, Nantz has the opportunity to redeem himself in both his own eyes and those of his doubtful men.
While Battle: Los Angeles is exponentially better than Skyline (heck, Avp:r was exponentially better than Skyline), and arguably the best movie of Liebesman’s career,...

Robert Rodriguez regular and ex-Folsom prison inmate Danny Trejo (whose lived-in face looks as leathery as his character’s trademark waistcoat) plays the man with the big blades in Tex Mex revenge flick Machete, the director’s return to the big screen following his failed commercial attempt at recreating the Grindhouse experience for a modern audience, and below-par kids effort, Shorts.
We’re in familiar Rodriguez territory here in this tale of an ex-Federale known as Machete who launches a violent campaign of retribution against his former bosses when they brutally murder his wife and leave him for dead. Hired by some unsavoury types to assassinate a senator, he soon realises he’s been set up again and is a cipher involved in the underhanded campaign of a corrupt senator to rid the Us of illegal immigrants from the southern border.
An injured Machete escapes the clutches of his enemies...

This may be one of the coolest TV spots ever. It's red band hardcore and incredibly bloody, giving you a good idea of what to expect in Robert Rodriguez's awesome new flick "Machete," in theaters this week.
Danny Trejo plays the title character, a man who is orderd to kill a senator but ends up being double-crossed. Pissed about what went down, he gets back up to seek revenge against those who screwed him.
Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriquez, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Lindsay Lohan co-star. I can't publish my review yet, but let me tell you, this flick blew my mind. It's first-class big-screen fun!
