Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall chaotically drops us into the chalet of Sandra (Sandra Hüller), Samuel (Samuel Theis), and their visually impaired young son, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner), in the French Alps. Sandra, a successful German writer, is in the midst of an interview with a visiting journalist (Camille Rutherford) that an unseen Samuel attempts to derail with his ceaseless blaring of an instrumental cover of 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” from his upstairs office. Once her husband has succeeded at his mission, Sandra sends the journalist home before going upstairs to work herself. Not too long after, Samuel is found dead outside the house by Daniel, who had been walking around the property with the family dog.
As its title suggests, that series of events will be thoroughly dissected over Anatomy of a Fall’s runtime, first at the home and then in the courtroom. Did Samuel’s frequent...

For readers of Alexandre Dumas’ novel, extravagant French adaptation “The Three Musketeers – Part II: Milady” packs its share of surprises: killing off important characters, sparing others and reimagining allegiances that have stood for nearly two centuries. For viewers of “Part I: D’Artagnan,” however, this swashbuckling sequel feels totally in keeping with what came before. Even the twists track, paying off what amounts to a nearly four-hour investment (not counting however many months audiences may have waited to see how the story ends).
Loyalty — to the crown, to one another, but not necessarily to the source material — remains the driving theme of director Martin Bourboulon’s blockbuster treatment, which tapped French megastars Vincent Cassel, Pio Marmaï and Romain Duris as titular trio Athos, Porthos and Aramis. The second film opens with fourth musketeer D’Artagnan (François Civil) in a coffin, though he’s not dead, merely captured by traitors who...

Anatomy of a Fall actress Sandra Hüller could be making a roast for Akiva Schaffer’s The Naked Gun reboot, so how hot and wet do you like it? A report from industry insider Daniel Richtman says Sandra Hüller is in talks to play the romantic lead in the forthcoming comedy, starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s Lt. Frank Drebin from the Police Squad series and Naked Gun film trilogy.
In the Naked Gun trilogy, Lt. Frank Drebin falls in love with Jane Spencer (Lisa Marie Presley), an assistant for industrialist Vincent Ludwig, utterly unaware of his villainy. After a slapstick-ridden meet-cute, Frank and Jane form a heated courtship accompanied by steamy home-cooked meals, ultra-protected sex, and trips to the baseball field.
How Liam Neeson and Hüller’s characters cross paths in the Naked Gun reboot remains a mystery. We must also wait...

Exclusive: Mathieu Kassovitz has quit the Paris Has Fallen television series citing creative differences. He has been replaced by Spiral actor Tewfik Jallab.

Anatomy of a Fall starts out with an extraordinary act of passive-aggressiveness: A German writer, Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hüller) is sitting in her home in Grenoble, a part-cabin, part-winter-getaway mini-mansion tucked away at the snowy foot of the French Alps. She’s being interviewed by a female student (Camille Rutherford) about her work. Wine’s being consumed, questions lead to slightly flirty answers and queries about the young woman’s life. The vibe feels like it’s slowly drifting into intimate territory. Sandra’s son, Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner), is roaming around with his Border Collie,...

If a husband is found dead at the base of a mountain in the woods, does that automatically mean his wife pushed him?
In Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or-winning “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Toni Erdmann” star Sandra Hüller takes a turn, playing a chilly bisexual novelist who is accused of offing her spouse. Added twist: he’s been killed in the very same manner she previously described in one of her murder mystery books. Director Triet co-wrote the script with her real-life spouse, Arthur Harari, the filmmaker behind “Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle.”
“Anatomy of a Fall” debuted at Cannes earlier this year, where the film won the festival’s top prize, making Triet only the third woman to win the Palme d’Or. The feature is continuing to make its rounds on the the festival circuit with upcoming screenings at TIFF and NYFF, and the film will hit theaters later this fall.

Gondry is back!! The Jokers distribution in France has debuted the first official trailer for Michel Gondry's latest film titled The Book of Solutions, originally titled Le Livre des Solutions in French. This premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival a few months ago, playing in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar fest, and was one of our Top 10 fest highlights. The quirky, upbeat comedy is a very personal, meta story for Gondry about a filmmaker trying to make a film his way and all the challenges he runs into in the process. Pierre Niney stars as Marc, who escapes the city for a small town where he lives with his aunt and a small crew as they try to finish the film without all the producers chasing them. The cast includes Blanche Gardin, Françoise Lebrun, Vincent Elbaz, Frankie Wallach, Camille Rutherford, and Mourad Boudaoud. This is Gondry's best in years, it's...

Ahead of its Locarno Festival world premiere, sales agent Outplay Films (“León”) has dropped an international trailer and poster for coming-of-age drama “Rivière,” an earnest take on adolescence and the way youth negotiates trauma.
“Riviére,” the debut feature of Hugues Hariche, will bow in the Festival’s Cineasti del Presente strand which highlights first and second feature-film debuts from emerging directors, sometimes uncovering exceptional talent. It follows Manon (Flavie Delangle), 17, as she abruptly returns to her hometown of Belfort, France in an attempt to reconcile with her estranged father. Near-orphaned by circumstance, she blends effortlessly into the scenery, taking up with local teens at the neighborhood ice rink. They maneuver their traumas with nuance while hockey and figure-skating act as vehicles that portray the script’s tensions, never the film’s primary focus.
Manon is determined to make it as a professional ice hockey player.

The ensuing days after a romantic breakup, even if it isn’t a cataclysmic one, are an uncanny time. Perhaps once the spell of verbal conflict and sparring’s ceased, suddenly your sole companion for the most intimate thoughts is yourself once again, but it’s an opportune moment for contemplation: how did it really go wrong? Or, can I be honest with myself and acknowledge my own partial responsibility for its demise? For Sandra (Sandra Hüller) and Samuel (Samuel Theis), the key onscreen and offscreen players in Anatomy of a Fall, are enduring this quagmire, although their inevitable breakup was enforced––the latter has just tragically died.

The filmmaker at the center of Michel Gondry’s new feature is in a love-hate relationship with his latest project. To protect the work in progress from the studio executives who have just fired him, he absconds to the country with the four-hour cut, his faithful editor and assistant in tow. And then he can’t bear to look at the footage, and gets busy with one tangential undertaking after another. The depiction of procrastination as an essential part of the creative process is one of the delights of The Book of Solutions (Le Livre des solutions), but on the way to its mildly satisfying final punchline, this uneven comedy loses its thread.

We tapped out of Michel Gondry cinema back when Be Kind Rewind was released, and suddenly the filmmaker is now at the dozen film mark with what feels like an alluring project due to the collection of players he has assembled for Le Livre des solutions. During Cannes we learned that Pierre Niney would topline the project. Lensing began this week with Blanche Gardin (out off the Critics’ Week debut of the funny-bone Portugal project Everybody Loves Jeanne), Camille Rutherford (recently seen in Cannes Premiere selected The Night of the 12th), Vincent Elbaz, Frankie Wallach and veteran thesp Françoise Lebrun (most recently seen in Vortex).…...

The Cannes market ensures there is no shortage of news updates, and so we have another round-up. The talented Marielle Heller has found her next project as Variety reports she is set to direct Amy Adams in Nightbitch. The adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s novel is backed by Searchlight Pictures, which will release the film on Hulu. With production set to get underway this fall, Adams will lead as a woman who is “thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a canine.”
Following News of the World, Paul Greengrass has announced his next project. The Hood, set to star Benedict Cumberbatch, is a period piece depicting the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt. THR notes our lead will likely play a farmer leading the “major uprising,...

It’s a given of the movie business that there will be a queen somewhere in the mix. Lately, we’ve seen a tilt toward Victoria, broad-minded and firm, as in Victoria & Abdul and The Young Victoria. Earlier, there was a vogue for Elizabeths, both I and II. Cate Blanchett twice played Elizabeth I in Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and Helen Mirren played Elizabeth II in The Queen. Between and around those, among others, have come The Other Boleyn Girl, Marie Antoinette and Sony’s promised return to Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile.
Empowered, embattled, enchanting and enlightened, royal womanhood inhabits a space of which more democratic female screen figures — Meryl Streep’s Katharine Graham, Natalie Portman’s Jacqueline Kennedy — can only dream. The board room and the Oval Office are important. But nothing beats a throne, at least when it comes to the movies.

In 1983, after decades of steady deterioration, writer and theologian John Hull became totally blind. To help make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began keeping an audio diary of his experiences as he adjusted to his new reality. Hull believed that if he didn’t try to understand blindness, it would destroy him, and as a result, produced an intimate story of loss and rebirth.

Whistleblowers like Edward Snowden garner respect and authority by sacrificing their own safety and freedom for the betterment of society, ultimately an effort to save lives. Bernardo Britto’s film “Jacqueline (Argentine)” explores a different kind of political whistleblower, one who’s a little less concerned with uncovering the truth and a little more concerned with hanging out.

Commonly known as a lieu that breeds new filmmaking talents, Nicholas Bell and I look back at the filmmakers who made the most noteworthy splash at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Here are our Top 10 New Voices countdown:
#10. Jim Cummings – Thunder Road (Short)
Producer on Patrick Wang’s The Grief of Others and Trey Edward Shults’s Krisha, Jim Cummings showed everyone who is the “boss” with the devilishly funny, conceptually sophisticated and fastidiously well executed short film. In one stroke, Cummings demonstrates a formal rigour, an impressionable, sumptuous pulse and fall-out-of-your-seat choreography. Winner of the top prize with the Short Film Grand Jury Prize, Thunder Road is a crowd pleaser and one heck of a lucky charm calling card. (El)

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

In the royal bedchamber.
454 years ago, a recently widowed teenage queen who had spent most of her life in France arrived on Scottish shores to begin her active, tragic reign. This year, Thomas Imbach’s biopic of Mary, Queen Of Scots premières at the Glasgow Film Festival. We asked its star, Camille Rutherford, what it was like to play such a famous woman.
“Everything about it was amazing,” she says. “The fact of actually getting the part, to begin with, and it was incredible to be 19 and be this queen who we learned about in history class. It was an incredible part. She was a very unusual person and I think of her as like a feminist.” It was particularly challenging to take on the role, she explains, because it meant acting in English for the first time.
