As Sex Crimes has evolved, it has been exciting to see how different Erotic Thrillers play to – or subvert – the conventions of the subgenre. This is especially true of modern entries, which, unlike the titles released during the heyday of the late 80s and early 90s, tend to defy simple classification.
The truth is that there are very few contemporary Erotic Thrillers; it’s something of a dormant subgenre that rears its head in fits and starts. This is partially why everyone got so excited by Adrian Lyne’s “return” with Deep Water (and then summarily got disappointed when he failed to adhere to the expected tropes that many of his own films established).
Fans of Lyne would do well to shift their attention to French writer/director François Ozon (Swimming Pool). Well respected in his home country, the extremely literary, openly queer director has made two Erotic Thriller-adjacent titles in the last six years,...

"Who are you...?" "Pinocchio!" Yes, of course. We all know who he is... Roadside Attractions in the US has unveiled one final US trailer for their upcoming release of the Italian update on Pinocchio, from director Matteo Garrone. This originally premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year after opening in Italy on Christmas last year. This new take on the story from Carlo Collodi's novel of the same name is staying true to that book, telling a more grounded story with fantastical elements. Roberto Benigni (who previously directed his own Pinocchio film in 2002) stars as Geppetto, Federico Ielapi plays Pinocchio, with a main cast including Marine Vacth, Marcello Fonte, Gigi Proietti, Davide Marotta, Massimiliano Gallo, Rocco Papaleo, and Massimo Ceccherini. This version has been dubbed into English - the same as the UK version we've teased before. This honestly looks so pretty bad, and I'm not sure...

Acclaimed Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone has released the new trailer for his upcoming live-action adaptation of the classic children’s story, Pinocchio, which is set to open in theaters on December 25th.
The film stars Oscar-winning actor Roberto Benigni as Geppetto, the woodcarver whose puppet magically comes to life and dreams of being a real boy. Nine-year-old Federico Ielapi plays Pinocchio, with some CGI assistance giving him a wooden frame and, of course, allowing his nose to grow exponentially whenever he lies.

Netflix has acquired the French drama “DNA,” the latest film from actress and filmmaker Maïwenn in which she also stars and explores her Algerian family heritage.

Actor-auteur Maïwenn bills herself last in the principal cast credits for “DNA,” adding the distinguishing curlicue of an “and” citation when her name eventually pops up on screen. On the one hand, it seems a courtesy to the formidable ensemble of her fifth feature as director, stacked as it is with stars from Fanny Ardant to Louis Garrel to Marine Vacth — all on fine, uninhibited form in a dysfunctional-family drama that frequently demands maximum volume from them. Yet the modesty seems coy in a film that eventually becomes a magnified, almost impenetrably personal star vehicle for Maïwenn herself, inspired by her own investigation of her diverse cultural identity. Despite her plainly impassioned investment in the project, and some intense, raucously entertaining scenes of intimate warfare along the way, “DNA” becomes less engaging as its focus narrows.

French actress Marine Vacth ("Double Lover") poses as 'the face' of Chanel's "Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation" campaign:
"..with a subtle range of easy-to-wear beiges, 'Healthy Glow' frees women from their fears of using foundation and embellishes every skin tone with a lasting healthy glow.
"The soft and comfortable texture glides over the skin and melts away.
"It adapts to the shape of the face and invisibly follows its every movement. The texture becomes imperceptible and allows the skin to breathe freely.
"The complexion looks evened-out and enhanced with a sheer finish. As if revived, it shows off the freshness and radiance of beautiful skin in the great outdoors..."
Vacth began her modeling career at the age of fifteen, then started acting at twenty. She played 'Tessa' in Cédric Klapisch's "My Piece of the Pie" and in 2011, she succeeded Kate Moss as 'the face' for "Yves Saint Laurent" and the "Chloé" brand.

The director begins filming his second feature, the bloody journey of a Brussels subway driver, starring Antonio de la Torre and Marine Vacth. Last week began the shoot of the new film from Giordano Gederlini, screenwriter on Ladj Ly’s recent film Les Misérables, winner of the Jury Prize in Cannes and of the César award for Best Film, but also on Olivier Masset-Depasse’s Mothers’ Instinct, Best Film and Best Screenplay winner at the latest Magritte Awards, and on Above the Law by François Troukens and Jean-François Hensgens. Giordano Gederlini presents Entre la vie et la mort as a urban and contemporary thriller, with Brussels one of its characters, powerful and organic. The film follows the journey of Leo Castaneda. Leo is a Spanish man living in Brussels, where he drives the subway trains of line 6. One evening, he locks eyes with a young man standing on the platform.

Like most of the major media events that were scheduled for the coming weeks, the Cannes Film Festival has been put on hold. However, while festivals ranging from SXSW to Tribeca canceled or postponed their plans, the splashiest celebration of cinema on the calendar was holding out for its May dates as long as possible. Finally, late last week, Cannes announced that it would delay its festivities and expressed a desire to reschedule the event for late June.
Given the unpredictable circumstances, it’s impossible to know whether that timeline is realistic — but Cannes wouldn’t be Cannes if it didn’t project an aura of confidence about what it was doing, and for the time being, the world’s most glamorous festival still plans to hold a 2020 edition.

“Pinocchio” will never stop becoming a real boy. Nearly 150 years after its initial publication and exactly 70 after the first Disney adaptation, the story continues inspiring new interpretations, from Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming animated version for Netflix to the just-announced Robert Zemeckis live-action take for Disney, which knows a thing or two about the potential for recycling IP.
By the time these updates arrive, however, Matteo Garrone’s “Pinocchio” will have already set a high bar for modern takes. The only new “Pinocchio” movie actually made in Italy, the tale’s country of origin, Garrone’s enthralling version
Despite an unruly running time and some rough transitions, the movie loads up on imaginative visuals and surreal flourishes that feel like a natural continuation — and a more complex variation — of the fairy tale playground the filmmaker last unleashed with 2015’s anthology “Tale of Tales.” Garrone takes his cues from Carlo Collodi’s 1883 story collection,...

Enough time has passed since Roberto Benigni’s ill-starred “Pinocchio” for the actor to move more happily into the role of Geppetto in Matteo Garrone’s visually rich though oddly subdued version of the perennial tale. Given the director’s penchant for multi-strand narratives, the classic story would seem a good fit, offering potential to explore some of the darker elements present also in the Disney masterpiece. Instead however, Garrone’s live-action entry, while more faithful to Carlo Collodi’s original novel, underplays the significant elements of cruelty, creating a child-friendly movie with its fair share of enchantment but curiously lacking in memorable highlights.
Whereas the animated film brilliantly managed to subsume the piecemeal nature of the storytelling with an exciting narrative cohesion, this “Pinocchio” doesn’t hide the novel’s composite structure, resulting in a movie reliant on familiarity with the source material and the superb work of the makeup artists and prosthetics makers.

Few things were more inevitable than a Francois Ozon film in which Jérémie Renier makes out with himself, however briefly. It’s the erotic cherry on top of a career of rule-breaking sexual escapades and pastel pastiche. Double Lover often feels like a return to some the director’s early ideas, including the effervescent camp of Sitcom and the throbbing sexual ambition of Criminal Lovers.
Yet this newest feature does at least begin with a grounded plot than these earlier films. Chloé (Marine Vacth) is a young woman with a recurring, potentially psychosomatic stomach problem. Naturally, she goes to therapist, the affable and reassuringly-sweatered Dr. Paul Meyer (Renier). Chloe sinks into one of his welcoming leather chairs, settles her feet on the fuzzy carpet, and tells him her story. The sessions go so well that, before you know it, they’ve moved in together...

François Ozon’s disorienting erotic thriller nods to Hitchcock and Cronenberg but becomes something uniquely his own
Is there a director currently working who is as effortlessly versatile as François Ozon? Or as fluent in the language of cinema? To go from the wistful painterly restraint of the post-first-world-war drama Frantz to the pulpy perve-fest mind games of L’Amant Double, and to bring the same exquisite level of craft to both – Ozon is a director whose unabashed pleasure in his medium is infectious. And it’s this – the juxtaposition of effortlessly rarefied film-making techniques with a deliciously schlocky premise and its collision of kink and crazy – that makes L’Amant Double such a turn-on.
The story – a disorienting deep dive into the subconscious and the sexual fantasies of a fragile young woman – wears its fetishes as boldly as any Hitchcockian corsetry. Chloé (Ozon’s Jeune & Jolie muse Marine Vacth...

From a jarring opening close-up of a speculum encircling a cervix to a pegging scene so rough you’ll be clinching through your wincing, “Double Lover” is not short on provocations. The latest from French auteur François Ozon, this erotic thriller is a mash-up of metaphors as beguiling as they are befuddling. In the vein of Lars Von Trier’s two-parter “Nymphomaniac,” “Double Lover” centers around a disturbed woman with an insatiable libido. Chloe (Marine Vacth) has less agency than Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Joe; she bounces capriciously between her twin lovers in a sort of ethereal sex-haze. Like Von Trier, Ozon grounds his extreme sex scenes with narrative urgency, justifying even the most gratuitous details; at the same time, the movie depicts consent violations in deeply problematic fashion.
Turning a twisted twin fetish into an exploration of identity, “Double Lover” charts a love triangle between a woman and two estranged...

Francois Ozon is a fascinating study in a directorial career. Never quite hitting the critical or commercial heights of many of his contemporaries, Ozon has found a committed, if niche, fan base that has seen him make some true masterpieces (last year’s Frantz) and also some real duds (Angel is pretty but a trifle). However, Double Lover is truly a singular achievement from a singular filmmaker. For both good and for ill.
One hesitates to delve too deeply into the film’s plot, as the sheer audacity of the narrative and its disinterest in leaving a single thing up to one’s imagination veers past audacious into the almost experimental. After a brief title sequence that sees our lead undergo a physical change, we see as a doctor is using a gynecological tool on Chloe (Marine Vacth, reteaming with Ozon after working together on the underrated Young and Beautiful...

You might think that a movie that opens with a close-up of a cervical exam (that dissolves into a shot of the heroine’s eye, filmed sideways) has nowhere left to go, but in “Double Lover,” French filmmaker François Ozon (“Swimming Pool,” “8 Women”) is just getting started. While the film’s obsession with twins (and occasional moments of body horror) might call to mind David Cronenberg’s darkly brilliant “Dead Ringers,” this new film focuses less on a pair of twin psychiatrists (both played by Jérémie Renier) and more on the patient-turned-lover (Marine Vacth) whose obsession with them mounts to dangerous levels. This...

Writer/director Francois Ozon has been playing in the sexual thriller genre for years but Double Lover seems to be channelling the popular 80s genre even more so than usual.
Based on a novel from Joyce Carol Oats, the movie stars Marine Vacth as Chloe, a fragile young woman who falls in love with her shrink Paul (Jeremie Renier). As couples often do, the pair move in together and Chloe begins to realize that Paul is hiding something from her: a twin.
In and of itself, that's not a huge deal though, as the trailer suggest, Paul and his brother may have been sharing Chloe which is just a tiny bit immoral.
Generally speaking, Ozon has a great track record with thrillers and I would have given him the benefit of the doubt but the addition of Vacth, who I have [Continued ...]...

Ever since making his feature debut with the darkly comical Sitcom, French writer/director François Ozon has been making the world feeling horny and shocked with his films, often at the same time. With a body of work that also includes Water Drops on Burning Rocks, Under the Sand, In the House and the glorious one-two punch of 8 Women and Swimming Pool, you’d think the prolific provocateur might soon be running out of tricks.
Think again. His latest erotic thriller, L’amant double, which premiered in competition at Cannes this year, proved to be the film scandaleux of the festival. Starring Marine Vacth as Chloé, a young woman who one day discovers her psychiatrist partner Paul (Jérémie Renier) might have an evil twin brother and gradually loses herself in a web of deceit and kinks, it’s the kind of dangerously sexy farce at which Ozon excels.

After highlighting 55 titles confirmed to arrive this fall, we now turn our attention to the festival-bound films either without distribution or awaiting a release date. Looking over Venice International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and New York Film Festival titles, we’ve rounded up 25 movies — most of which we’ll be checking out over the next few weeks — that we can’t wait to see.
Check out our 25 most-anticipated festival premieres below, and let us know what you’re most looking forward to.
Caniba (Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel)
As part of the groundbreaking Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel have established themselves at the forefront of modern documentary filmmaking, most notably with their landmark 2012 film Leviathan. In their second collaboration this year (after somniloquies, which premiered at Berlin), the two seem to be engaging with a more typical documentary subject, though the form of Caniba remains to be seen.
