Few other filmmakers know Los Angeles or see Los Angeles like Paul Thomas Anderson, a lifelong native who’s made his career on the sprawling cast of characters, themes, and environments that make up the Southern California city. It makes sense then that when Anderson announced plans to tackle an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s ‘70s-set novel “Inherent Vice” (review), he was hesitant to watch a copy of "Mondo Hollywood," a 1967 documentary given to him by Mark Flanagan, owner of the L.A. music and comedy club Largo. “There's a lot of coverage on this period, and there's a lot that I've seen,” the “Magnolia” director explained Saturday afternoon at an AFI Fest screening of the documentary. “Initially I was skeptical and then I put this on and thought immediately, ‘I've never seen anything like this.’ ” A freewheeling, surreal, and fascinating piece told in vignettes, “Mondo Hollywood” places us right...

The last time Sarah Silverman appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in November 2013, she came armed with a box of her ex-boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel's belongings. The comic and the late-night host broke up in July 2008 after five years of dating. The funny duo got back together briefly, only to break up again in March 2009. It was the first time Silverman had been on Kimmel's show since he married Molly McNearney. Kimmel invited the Masters of Sex star to appear on his show Thursday, both to honor Joan Rivers and to get some payback. He referred to Silverman's acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards, in which she thanked her boyfriend by saying, "Mark Flanagan at Largo, thank you for making Largo my home and for...

Louis C.K. gave comedian Tig Notaro the ultimate endorsement by releasing her comedy on his website, but this weekend, he went even further, emailing his fans directly about how the release came to be.
In August, Notaro shocked fans by announcing that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, the latest in a string of tragedies in her life that included losing her mother and splitting with her longtime girlfriend. But the way Notaro made the announcement, live on stage at Los Angeles club Largo, almost immediately became the stuff of legend.
Notaro started off the set "Good Evening. Hello. I have cancer. How are you? Hi, how are you? Is everybody having a good time? I have cancer. How are you?” She then delivered about 30 minutes of masterful comedy that delivered an emotional nakedness rarely seen.

Six year old Frankie Taylor from Finningley beat competition from across the UK to win the role of the young Sheridan Smith in Sheridan's episode of Sky's Little Crackers, a casting call that was posted on Screenterrier back in September.
Sheridan said of Frankie:
"She's gorgeous and she's acting us all off the screen. She's so talented. Frankie's actually from Doncaster and when I went to the auditions for the little ones, she was walking down the street and from behind with her long hair, I thought that she looked like I used to. Then there she was at the audition and she got the part - she's brilliant."
Due to appear on Sky before Christmas, Sheridan’s episode shows her as a child tired of being left at home with her big brothers and boring babysitter as her parents head out to perform their country and western gigs, so...

Queen Elizabeth's head chef may be as eager for the royal wedding day to arrive as Prince William and Kate Middleton themselves. Mark Flanagan says he and his 21-strong team at Buckingham Palace are "excited" about treating the 600 guests to canapés made from the best of British produce. He's keeping mum on the full menu for April 29, but the selection of canapés (two-bite decorative finger foods) could include smoked salmon on a beetroot blini, confit duck-leg terrine with smoked duck and pear chutney, and quail eggs with celery salt, goat cheese, caramelized walnuts and parmesan crisp.
