For a film that almost didn’t get made, 76 Days has racked up an impressive number of awards.
The documentary directed by Hao Wu, Weixi Chen and a Chinese filmmaker who remains anonymous, and produced by Wu and Jean Tsien, earned a spot on the Oscar shortlist earlier this year, claimed the Audience Award at AFI Fest, and in June won a prestigious Peabody Award. The Peabody committee praised the film for its humanistic approach, immersing viewers within hospitals in Wuhan, China as that city implemented an emergency lockdown in the early days of the Covid-19 outbreak.

In 2017, Russia’s Chechen Republic declared open season on LGBTQ people, launching what Human Rights Watch has called a “vicious large-scale anti-gay purge.” David France, director of the HBO documentary Welcome to Chechnya, says there’s another word for it.

The documentary film community gathered virtually on Facebook Tuesday night to chat and cheer each other on at the annual Cinema Eye Honors Awards. Oscar ballots are due Wednesday at 5pm Pt, and many documentary branch voters were on the livestream.
At the start of the evening, as we waited for the pre-taped presentation to begin, “Crip Camp” nominee Jim Lebrecht congratulated “The Dissident” director Bryan Fogel for his BAFTA nomination that morning. The Romanian film “Collective” has been named the best nonfiction film of 2020 at the 13th annual Cinema Eye Honors, a New York-based awards show devoted to all facets of documentary filmmaking.
Kirsten Johnson took the directing prize for “Dick Johnson Is Dead,” while the award for outstanding debut went to Garrett Bradley for “Time,” which also won for its editing.
“Boys State” won the Audience Award, the only Cinema Eye Honor category in which the public was invited to cast ballots.

Another precursor has chimed in, this one focused on the documentary genre. Last night, the International Documentary Association held their 36th Annual awards ceremony. There, the IDA Awards tapped Crip Camp as its Best Feature winner, beating fellow nominees Collective, Gunda, MLK/FBI, The Reason I Jump, Reunited, Time, The Truffle Hunters, and Welcome to Chechnya. It was a good victory for Netflix and Higher Ground (Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s company), as they seek to make it back to back wins at the Academy Awards in Best Documentary Feature. Russian documentary director Vitaly Mansky has revealed what happened earlier this week when he was detained by police outside the Russian secret service agency premises in Moscow.
In a picture stunt that was viewed by millions across Russia, Mansky was shown in front of the building holding up a pair of blue boxer shorts. This was to draw attention to allegations that surfaced this week that the Russian secret service (the Fsb) tried to assassinate opposition leader Alexei Navalny by secreting a toxin on his underpants.

The HBO Max documentary “Welcome to Chechnya” won a big award recently from Doc NYC, the largest documentary festival in the United States. The film, which documents the efforts to protect LGBTQ youth escaping abuse from the Chechen Republic of Russia, claimed the Doc NYC Producing Award, honoring producers Alice Henty, Joy A. “The Truffle Hunters” (Sony Pictures Classics) scored three nods. All four films landed nods for Best Feature and Director, along with Jerry Rothwell’s “The Reason I Jump.” Netflix also landed multiple nominations for “Dick Johnson Is Dead” And “My Octopus Teacher.”
The IDAs are among the most reliable bellwethers of the Oscar documentary feature race. Last year’s IDA Best Feature winner, “For Sama,” was among the final five Oscar nominees, along with three out of 10 IDA nominees, including eventual Oscar-winner “American Factory.”

The International Documentary Association has announced the nominees for its 36th Annual IDA Documentary Awards, and a certain streaming service dominates. Netflix scored a leading 18 noms for the 2020 IDAs, more than three times its nearest rival. PBS is second with five, followed by HBO (four).
The IDA also said today that its 2020 ceremony is going virtual on January 21.
“The nominees present an inspiring and urgent range of stories from around the globe,” said Simon Kilmurry, executive director of the IDA. “The broad range of subjects and approaches to storytelling underscores that documentary is our most exciting form of cultural expression, a vital art form and a crucial element of democratic dialogue.”
Ten films are up for the marquee Best Feature award: Collective, Crip Camp (Netflix), Gunda (Neon), MLK/FBI (IFC Films), The Reason I Jump (Kino Lorber), Reunited, Softie, Time, The Truffle Hunters (Sony Pictures Classics) and Welcome to Chechnya (HBO).
The helmers of five of those films also are up for Best Director: Garrett Bradley (Time), Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw (The Truffle Hunters), Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht (Crip Camp), Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI) and Jerry Rothwell (The Reason I Jump).

David France’s “Welcome to Chechnya,” a documentary about LGBTQ activists trying to help during the Chechnya government’s brutal crackdown on gays and lesbians, leads all films in nominations in the Cinema Eye Honors’ broadcast categories, which were announced on Thursday during a virtual edition of its annual fall lunch.
Cinema Eye, a New York-based organization founded in 2007 to recognize all aspects of nonfiction filmmaking, also announced its new Stay Focused initiative. The program spotlights 12 films by up-and-coming filmmakers who lost the chance for theatrical exhibition and film-festival exposure because of the coronavirus pandemic. Cinema Eye has pledged to find “in-person opportunities” for the filmmakers once the pandemic subsides, starting with theatrical screenings at the new Vidiots Theatre in Los Angeles in late 2021.

The documentaries “Landfall” and “Five Years North” have won the top jury prizes at the 2020 Doc NYC film festival, the largest festival in the United States devoted to nonfiction filmmaking.

Exclusive: HBO Documentary Films has acquired North American television and streaming rights to Welcome to Chechnya, the documentary by David France, the Oscar-nominated director of How to Survive a Plague and The Death and Life of Marsha P. Investigating the truth behind the political show trial which saw the director sentenced in August 2015 to 20 years imprisonment for terrorism, the film also documents the wave of international solidarity from the filmmaking community spearheaded by the European Film Academy (Efa) from Berlin.

The Cannes Marche featured an enhanced documentary offering this year.
Producer Lawrence Bender remembered that it was a decade ago at Cannes when he launched Davis Guggenheim’s An Inconvenient Truth [pictured], the climate change film that starred Al Gore. “Every once in a while you get lucky, lightning strikes, we didn’t change the world but we added a few bricks to the process,” he said. “Millions of people saw the movie a lot was affected… We have made an enormous amount of progress.”

Producer Lawrence Bender remembered that it was a decade ago at Cannes when he launched Davis Guggenheim’s An Inconvenient Truth [pictured], the climate change film that starred Al Gore. “Every once in a while you get lucky, lightning strikes, we didn’t change the world but we added a few bricks to the process,” he said. “Millions of people saw the movie a lot was affected… We have made an enormous amount of progress.”

Now in its fifth year, Doc Corner, which runs throughought the festival [May 11 - 22], is moving to the Riviera where it will feature an expanded programme.
This year’s line-up includes one-to-one meetings Doc Meets, presentations from organisations including Cph:dox and a video library of 250 feature documentaries.
There will also be a new 21-seat documentary-only Marché Screening Room that will run screenings throughout the festival.

Russia’s Supreme Court will hear the appeal against Ukrainian filmmaker’s Oleg Sentsov’s 20-year sentence on November 24.
Speaking to Radio Svoboda, Sentsov’s lawyer Dmitry Dinze said that the goal was the “unambiguous acquittal” of Sentsov and the activist Oleksandr Kolchenko.
According to Dinze, they were expecting the appeal to lead to “a reversal of the conviction, the referral of the case to a new judicial proceeding” that would lead to an acquittal.
This would be the maximum objective, Dinze suggested, while the minimum would be to see the length of Sentsov’s 20-year sentence being reduced.
Sentsov and Kolchenko are currently being held in the Sizo-4 prison in Rostov-on-Don, but Dinze noted that there were apparently no plans to move Sentsov to Moscow for the hearing of the appeal.

Russian filmmakers Alexander Sokurov and Alexey Fedorchenko are among the latest to speak out in public in support of their Ukrainian colleague Oleg Sentsov.
“The story about Sentsov’s arrest appeared from the very beginning to be rather fantastic,” Sokurov said in a statement for the Russian discussion forum Snob.
“The investigating organs have somewhat exaggerated the ability of film directors for criminal political activities.”
The director, whose latest film Francofonia will have its world premiere in Venice next month, said he was “confident” that there wasn’t any extremism in Sentsov’s actions and “nothing more extremist than civil protest”.
Meanwhile, Alexey Fedorchenko (Angels of the Revolution) declared that “protecting the freedom of innocently accused people is not something that only filmmakers must do, but all the inhabitants of our country”.

The ongoing political tension between Russia and Ukraine was not forgotten during this week’s Moscow International Film Festival (Miff), which ends tomorrow (Friday).
At a meeting with representatives of two new Russian films Battle for Sevastopol and The Territory, Russian Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky described collaboration between the Russian and Ukrainian film industries as currently being ¨frozen¨.

Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov’s detention in Russia’s Lefortovo prison has been extended once again - this time until May 11 after a decision by the regional court judge Elena Kaneva.
This latest extension will mean that Sentsov has been held in custody for a year since being arrested by the Russian Fsb secret service in the Crimean peninsula in May 2014.
Speaking at the hearing in the courtroom Sentsov said defiantly that he could not agree with the decision to extend his custody since there hadn’t been any evidence presented of his alleged participation in or organisation of terrorist activities in Crimea last year.
After making reference to the testimonies obtained from fellow defendants Gennady Afanasyev and Oleksiy Chyrny , which the Russian Fsb security authorities claim to incriminate him as a supporter of such activities, he added: ¨I am confident that the brave investigators will prove everything because the Federal Service of Chaos in your country...

Bent Hamer’s latest feature film 1001 Grams will be the opening film tonight for Lübeck’s Nordic Film Days (Oct 29 – Nov 2), which has a programme of 172 films screening from the North and North-East of Europe.
Norway’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar was co-produced by Cologne-based Pandora Film Produktion and will be released theatrically in Germany by Pandora’s distribution arm, Pandora Film Verleih, on December 18.
Ahead of 1001 Grams’ German premiere in Lübeck, co-producer Claudia Steffen and her partners at Pandora issued a statement expressing their concern „that one of our most important allies, the Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw, has faced significant cut-backs from its two main shareholders.“

Documentary lovers, get ready! North America's biggest documentary film festival, Hot Docs, is set to gear up for 2014 in Toronto. The 21st Hot Docs runs from April 24 - May 4, and this year's slate presents 197 titles from 43 countries in 12 screening programs.

Hot Docs has just announced the 14 documentary features that will make up part of this year's Special Presentations program. The selected films are a combination of international and world premieres, recent festival award winners, and works by "master filmmakers or featuring some star subjects." As part of the 2014 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, the films will screen from April 24th to May 4th. The remaining festival lineup will be announced on March 18th. For those who missed them on the film circuit, Sundance winners "Return to Homs" (World Cinema Documentary Grand Jury Prize) and "Rich Hill" (Documentary Grand Jury Prize) as well as Venice Golden Lion winner "Sacro Gra" are taking part in the program.
