A feast for the eyeballs! That’s what the UK’s new TV drama (British shows returning for another series this year are here) output looks like for 2024 – a year of thrills, chills and laughs, from supernatural escapism to immersive historical dramas, true stories brought to life, and plenty to feed Britain’s crime mystery obsession.
Here’s a flavour of what 2024 holds for your TV: book adaptations include a new imagining of Ian Rankin’s Rebus detective stories coming to the BBC, a scandalous adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s iconic novel Rivals (starring David Tennant), Jack Thorne’s take on Lord of the Flies, and much much more.
There’s high-stakes action in thrillers like Red Eye, Black Doves and Nightsleeper, and you can transport yourself back in time to discover the lives of a notorious eighties jewel thief in Joan, sinister Jacobean power play in Mary and George,...

She wowed fans as Sansa Stark in "Game of Thrones" which saw her nominated for an Emmy, starred alongside Colin Firth and Toni Colette in the eight-part drama "The Staircase", and most recently took on a comedic role in Netflix's "Do Revenge". Now, we've got our first look at Sophie Turner in the gritty upcoming six-part drama,"Joan," based on a true story of the notorious jewel thief, Joan Hannington.
On May 18, ITV released the first photo of Turner as she takes on the lead role of Hannington with her eclectic sense of style and bleached blonde hair, channeling the '80s when the series is set. Alongside the star is actor Frank Dillane, who plays Boisie, a London antiques dealer. They are standing in front of an American-inspired diner and a Ford Capri.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Andor."
Most of those involved with "Andor" have stressed that the series will be light on Easter eggs and references to other "Star Wars" projects. But seeing as "Andor" is still a prequel at the end of the day, it still manages to allude to future events where appropriate. While the references up to this point have been few and far between, it's getting harder to ignore the parallels between "Andor" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" — especially where the series' explosive Aldhani arc is concerned.
It's fitting that one of Cassian Andor's first missions for the Rebellion mirrors his very last. Both involve infiltrating Imperial bases, sure, and end with disappointing casualties, but so many of the rebels on the Aldhani mission also share traits with the rebels of "Rogue One." Take Taramyn (Gershwyn Eustache Jnr), who, like Bodhi...

Spoilers for "Andor" up through episode 6 follow.
When Disney first announced that a bevy of new "Star Wars" programming was heading to its streaming service, the initial reaction to "Andor" was somewhere between "meh" and "ugh." Oh, look, another prequel story about a character who's already dead. Where could such a story possibly go? What interesting facts about Cassian Andor's life remain to be uncovered? Most importantly: why?
And yet, "Andor" may end up being the best "Star Wars" show on Disney+. "Star Wars" traditionally engages in pretty black-and-white storytelling, but "Andor" is flourishing in the grays. There are no heroes here, just people struggling to survive. Diego Luna deserves much of the credit for that, as his reprisal of the dangerously-irked freedom fighter has proven there is a lot more to squeeze out of his story. Cassian doesn't say a lot, but Luna's performance speaks volumes. Aided by a smart and mature script — sadly,...

It's been eight years since the very first teaser for "Star Wars" sequel "The Force Awakens" was released, but I still remember it like it was yesterday. That teaser made major waves from its very first scene, which opened with the face of Finn (John Boyega) out among the sand dunes of Jakku. That one image revealed so much about the character: He was clad in Stormtrooper armor, so obviously aligned with the First Order (née Empire), right? Maybe at first, but Finn famously defects early on, eventually pledging allegiance to the Resistance.
"The Force Awakens" introduced a complicated hero with Finn, one who ultimately made the choice to break free from his oppressive conditioning and stand up for what he thought was right. In a world full of heroes whose rebel status felt like a no-brainer, Finn's fight back to the light brought real nuance to the franchise, effectively...

U.K. broadcaster BBC One has released a punchy trailer for “Mangrove,” one of five films from the “Small Axe” anthology by Oscar and BAFTA winner Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”).
Aug. 9 marks the 50th anniversary of the day in 1970 when 150 protesters of West Indian, African and South Asian heritage in Notting Hill, West London, marched to local police stations in protest of police harassment in their communities, including the Mangrove restaurant. Nine protest leaders were arrested and charged with incitement to riot: Frank Crichlow, Darcus Howe, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Barbara Beese, Rupert Boyce, Rhodan Gordon, Anthony Innis, Rothwell Kentish and Godfrey Millett. The group later became known as the ‘Mangrove 9.’
“It was a march necessitated by relentless police brutality in Notting Hill,” said McQueen. “To commemorate the bravery of these community activists and the nine who went on to be acquitted of incitement to riot with the judge citing ‘evidence of racial hatred,...
