As the old saying goes, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Country star Laine Hardy, who was eliminated in the early rounds of “American Idol” last year, has returned in Season 17 for a second shot at the trophy. Should Laine end up earning the confetti shower, he’d be the third “American Idol” winner to claim victory after being eliminated in a prior season. The other two were Season 12 champ Candice Glover and Season 13 winner Caleb Johnson. Watch Laine’s 2019 audition video above of The Band‘s “The Weight.”

In case you need a legitimate reason to check out the thirteenth season of American Idol, here’s one: This is the first season where none of the judges are embarrassed by one other.
Think about it. From seasons one to eight, Simon Cowell rolled his eyes at Paula Abdul, who was usually rolling her eyes on accident. In season nine, Ellen DeGeneres winced at all of Simon’s callous remarks as if they were stains on her syndication-friendly reputation. In seasons ten and eleven, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson giggled in terror whenever your great aunt Steven Tyler purred at female contestants. In season 12, the whole panel refrained from weeping when Mariah Carey would attempt legitimate criticisms and instead wind up reciting Jacqueline Bisset‘s entire Golden Globes speech.
But finally, with the new lineup of Harry Connick Jr, Jennifer Lopez, and returnee Keith Urban, the mix is mysteriously perfect.

American Idol‘s 13th season premieres tonight with a new(-ish) cast of judges including the irascible Dolphin Tale star Harry Connick Jr., budding U-Turn actress Jennifer Lopez, and grown-up Peppermint Patty Keith Urban. Maybe they’ll do a good job! I don’t know! But I’ll be there watching because American Idol is still, despite sinking (but relatively phenomenal) ratings, the greatest singing cotillion on TV. Here are five reasons why.
5. The Hollywood rounds give you the best highs and most hilarious lows.
Twelve seasons in, the Hollywood rounds of American Idol remain the most underrated part of the show and maybe the entire reality-competition genre. The bustling energy of the second tryout, where attention-starved contestants who’ve passed the city auditions jump to Hollywood and attempt group numbers in a Fanny Brice-on-roller-skates way, is often the best indicator of how truly talented and likable the auditioning contestants are.

How is this for some epic music news? What do you get when you cross the dynamic former American Idol contestant, Jessica Sanchez, with the biggest scripted music show ever? Why, you get a brand new Glee diva!
Now that I hear the news, I seriously wondering why Glee didn’t scoop up the wee talented one a long time ago. But better late than never! How cool will it be to see Sanchez in her first acting gig ever? Idol is still making dreams come true.
People Magazine had a chat with the gal with those amazing pipes and learned that her big guest appearance of Fox’s Glee is happening in the season finale. Yes, I’d say that’s a spotlight worthy of Miss Sanchez. Like her famous rendition of the song made popular by another former Idol suggests, I think we’re going to love her.

Charlotte, North Carolina was the third stop on the "American Idol" auditions, but in Wednesday's episode, the focus shifted from the contestants (which is what the show should be all about) to the judges -- namely Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. There were a lot more clips of the judges' interactions, depicting a tired, hungry and agitated Nicki. Of course, Charlotte was the site of the now infamous blow-up between the two judges, a story that made headlines before "Idol" even began airing. So what was the audition that set Nicki off? It's No. 1 on our list of the Top 5 "American Idol" Charlotte auditions.1. Summer CunninghamSummer had a pleasant if not unremarkable voice. Little did she know that she would become the center of one of the most discussed celebrity feuds. Watch for yourself:The fight appeared to be edited for TV. Godzilla vs. Mothra. Batman vs. Joker. Coke vs. Pepsi. Michigan vs. Notre Dame. Randy Jackson vs. the English language. These are the rivalries that define the modern age. They’re long-standing. They’re heated. And pretty much everybody’s got an opinion on ‘em.
And now we’ve got…Nicki vs. Mariah? Divas, pleeeease.
On tonight’s episode of American Idol — centered on the Season 12 auditions from Charlotte, Nc — a pair of wannabe alpha judges stomped and roared in an effort to establish dominance. Show insiders trumpeted the imbroglio months before it happened. Fox’s promo department heralded it as must-see TV.

For American Idol (TV) fans, nothing beats a concert packed with live music, psychedelic lights, and their very own Top Ten belting out the season's most popular Idol performances. This time, however, there's no judges, no tireless, never-ending commercials (except for the occasional, strategically placed plugs for Idol sponsored products), and no abbreviated songs. This year's Top Ten made Chicago their second stop in the 2012 American Idols Live! tour following an opening night in Detroit, Mi. Fresh out of rehearsals in Los Angeles, the tour is young, and the fatigue of a rigorous travel schedule and an inevitable bout or two of homesickness has not set in with it's cast. Full of excitement and anticipation, they are steadily making their way across America to meet their fans and spread some Idol love. On this occasion, three of the Idols - Colton Dixon, Joshua Ledet and Skylar Laine sat down with...

If you think Nigel Lythgoe has an easy job, consider this: Despite producing the No. 2 show of the 2011-2012 TV season in terms of total viewers and the coveted 18-49 demo, American Idol‘s executive producer is still in the unenviable position of defending the show’s ratings and creative direction in the face of public criticism from his own boss.
We caught up with Lythgoe prior to Idol‘s Season 11 finale to get his thoughts on how the season had played out, why female contestants can’t win seem to take home the top prize, what he thinks of his high-profile singing-show competitors,...

America has voted, and Phillip Phillips is the new "American Idol!"The 21-year-old pawn shop worker from Georgia bested 16-year-old singing sensation Jessica Sanchez of California to claim the title. A record 132 million votes were cast in the finale.Phillip is the show's eleventh winner and the fifth male contestant in a row to win. His winning single, "Home," will be released this week.Phillip was consistently praised for his originality and never found himself in the bottom group. Jessica was actually the lowest vote getter among the Top 7, but got a reprieve from judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.Had she won, Jessica would have been the first saved contestant to win "American Idol" and also the youngest (Jordin Sparks, "Idol's" last female winner, was 17 when she won Season 6).The two finalists will join Joshua Ledet, Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine, Elise Testone, Colton Dixon, DeAndre Brackensick,...

Unlike the actual "American Idol" results show, we don't intend to keep you in suspense about the winner with two hours of filler. After 132 million votes cast last night (really, people?), the 11th winner of the juggernaut reality competition is ...

The White Guy With Guitar strikes again! Looks like that stereotypical streak on "American Idol" isn't being broken any time soon. Whatever else you might say about P-squared (and I fully expect you to in the comments section), the ladies seem to love him. He's got a radio-ready sound -- especially with his Mumford & Sons-esque winner's song, "Home" -- and he probably has the greatest chance of making an impact on the charts, as so many previous "American Idol" winners have failed to do.
Did he have the best vocals, an impressive range or the ability to work the stage? No. But that doesn't preclude him from being a successful artist,...

When NBC’s rival singing competition The Voice returned in February, I felt like I was the only Idol fan left in America. Media outlets championed NBC’s chair-spinning competition, with its flashy format — an audition style that’s admittedly superior to Idol’s — and sass-spewing judges, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton. “The Voice is more relevant, more meaningful, more compelling and more entertaining right now,” said Alex Strachan of the Montreal Gazette. “After a decade, we no longer believe in the Idol factory,” wrote EW’s Mark Harris. Those barbs stung me (an American Idol junkie) personally...

Though Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez will surely super-sing and hyper-emote their way through tonight's Top 2 performance show, American Idol's eleventh season has already left a trail of thoroughly professional, if not legendary performances. Fortunately, we''ve counted up the 11 that really, really ruled, and I'll tell you a secret: The top two performances on this list may be the two best in the history of the series -- aside from my darling Melinda Doolittle's "My Funny Valentine," of course. They're an astonishing pair of clips, and I hope reality competition scientists study them with microscopes and applause for decades.
Let's count down the 11 best, kids! Hurl your dissent in the comments, please.
11. DeAndre Brackensick, "Master Blaster"

It's the final countdown. On Tuesday night (May 22), Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez will face off for the season 11 crown, capping a roller-coaster ride filled with soaring highs — Sanchez's "I Will Always Love You," Joshua Ledet's "To Love Somebody," Skylar Laine's "Wind Beneath My Wings," that time Steven Tyler wore Roy Lichtenstein pants — and just as many crushing lows — Heejun Han's impromptu strip show, Colton Dixon's hair, Randy Jackson's collection of pins, etc. — with the majority, of course, falling somewhere in between. If anything, this season has given us more of the same: nothing more, nothing less.
Of course, through it all, our "American Idol" experts have stuck it out, providing us with their own, uh, unique insights and...

Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips will battle it out for the American Idol crown next Tuesday, and the new American Idol will be revealed the following night during the big two-hour-plus finale. Make sure to set your DVR’s correctly; the episode will run over with an extra seven minutes. Current American Idol champ Scotty McCreery and pop superstar Rihanna, plus a slew of surprise guests, are set to appear.
The final performance themes, according to producer Nigel Lythgoe will be: 1. The finalist’s favorite song of the series. 2. A song chosen by Simon Fuller. 3. The finalist’s new single.

Brace yourself, because it pains me to revisit last night's American Idol: Even though the Top 4 is a quartet of major talent and power, some of these kids hurt for victory more than the others. It's hard not to root for the hurting troubadours, you know? Hollie Cavanagh and Jessica Sanchez seem like they're clawing for recognition while the dudes receive mammoth amounts of adulation every single week -- and that's regardless of how well they do. (I'm still recovering from Phillip Phillips' "Time of the Season.") But did justice kick in on Thursday night's results? Scroll down to see the eliminated contestant and our memorial.

'He's really good and probably the best singer of the last three or four seasons,' one 'Idol' expert tells MTV News.

Joshua Ledet performs on "American Idol"
Photo: Fox
Just about every season of "American Idol" seems to have at least one: a singer whose talent is so impressive and complete that their weekly performances come off as effortless. Whether it's winners like Ruben Studdard, Fantasia or Carrie Underwood, or runners-up like Adam Lambert, Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson or Chris Daughtry, these finalists make it seem easy.
If you believe Randy, Jennifer and Steven, we are seeing one of those rare moments right now in the form of Joshua Ledet. The old-soul singer has been crushing it without fail just about every week on the show, with just a few missteps along the way.

I've sailed through the eleventh season of American Idol and the second season of The Voice like a damn trooper. I've skewered them both for your entertainment. But now the time has come to pick the better show, and I'm using seven categories of criteria to reach a verdict. Idol is better in some regards while The Voice wins in others, but the overall results are in! Dim the lights and let's crown one singing competition king. We'll start the showdown with my favorite category: hosting.
1. Hosting: Carson Daly vs. Ryan Seacrest
Is there a reason why the hosts on talent competitions aren't discussed more? Frankly, they're the most critical element of the proceedings. Both The Voice and American Idol are uncontrolled blitzes of power ballads, lighting cues, and talky interludes, and it takes the finesse of a killer emcee to rein it all in. And if we're being honest,...

Dubious claims dropped faster and more frequently during American Idol‘s Top 6 performance show than J.Lo’s legendary backside in her latest music video. Phillip Phillips kidded that the U.S. government is running tests to make Jessica Sanchez’s voice even more poweful. Skylar is a “thick-boned” girl, noted Hollie (who’s been in this country — and in front of the Idol judges — long enough that she really ought to know the term “thick-skinned.”) And Randy Jackson claimed to have invented the word “ginormous“ right there at the judges’ table. Before you get excited, this week's theme "Now and Then" does not refer to the movie starring Christina Ricci and Rosie O'Donnell, among others. I wish. No, the Top 7 (revisited after The Save) are performing twice tonight; one song from this century/millennium, and a "soul" hit from yesteryear. It's pretty wide open, which is why I'm surprised to see such weak choices in the recently-revealed set list. 2 Gaga songs? Adele again? "Fallin" by Alicia Keys? My choices were much better, if you ask me. And no one did! Although it looks like, out of 14 songs, one of my choices (Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness") squeaked in.

American Idol's lucky seven had a mostly fantastic night on Wednesday. But when everyone does well, it only makes elimination night harder. "I'm always worried, Ryan, when it gets to this point in the competition," Randy Jackson told host Seacrest at the beginning of Thursday's results show. "I got to be honest with you - I said it last night - nobody's safe." It's true that top contenders at this point in the competition have been eliminated. It happened to Jennifer Hudson, who performed "Think Like a Man" with Ne-Yo on Thursday. Then again, it also happened to Sanjaya Malakar.

Whether or not you’re happy with the outcome of this week’s American Idol Top 7 results show, I think we can all agree on one thing: The sight of Phillip Phillips with Colton Dixon’s head in his lap, gingerly stroking his rival’s magnificent coiff as they delivered the line “Why so serious?” in a group rendition of Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” was the stuff of Idol legend.
Actually, maybe we can agree on two things? Because, to paraphrase Randy Jackson, blah blah blah, blah blah blah, blah blah blah, America got it wrong with the Bottom 3 this week,...

Last week we watched as American Idol contestant DeAndre Brackensick received the fewest votes of the week and the judges chose not to save him. Tonight's opener showed that the other contestants were quite broken up about his departure. Or they were broken up because that means they're one week closer to departures of their own.
Tonight, the Top 7 are performing songs released from 2010 to 2012 which can be great if the contestants can use this to show what kind of current artist they'd be and, well, not great if they break my cardinal rule of singing competitions--if you pick a big, popular number, you'd best sing it better than the original artist. Choose wisely, contestants. Please.
Our pal Jimmy has called in Akon to guest mentor this week. Let's see how they did.
Skylar Laine is up first tonight and she's picked Kellie Pickler's "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You.

Gotye must feel so happy he could die. In addition to winning over millions of people who can’t stop listening to the most angst-ridden hit single to ever feature a xylophone — “Somebody That I Used to Know” (ft. Kimbra) — the Australian singer-songwriter has taken U.S. network TV by storm. Even American Idol judge Steven Tyler has this song looping on his iPod. It’s beautiful, just beautiful.

American Idol's top seven are sizzling! The judges gave mostly praise on Wednesday night - and much of it was simply glowing - as the remaining contestants performed songs from the last three years. Keep reading for a full report on Skylar Laine, Colton Dixon, Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet, Hollie Cavanagh, Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone. Related: Idol's DeAndre Brackensick Excited for PromElise has been in the bottom a handful of times, but the judges are clearly rooting for her after a performance of Lady Gaga's "Yoü and I." "That was the perfect song for you," said Randy Jackson,...

Somewhere in a dark, tiny room in the basement of American Idol HQ, Nigel Lythgoe is dusting off a clear plastic box containing a bright red button marked with two words that have the power to divide the Idoloonie Nation: “Judges’ Save.”
Idology: DeAndre Brackensick on Jimmy’s Scorn, Fresh Idol Songs, and a Genius Finale Idea
Now look, I’ve got no inside information that Randy, J.Lo, and Steven will use Season 11 Top 7 Week — focusing on songs from 2010-2012 — to save an ousted contestant (in the tradition of Matt Giraud, “Big Mike” Lynche, and Casey Abrams), but a...

Back to La, sports fans! Remind me to tell you all about the medical emergency that caused my 5:50 a.m. flight from Boston to be redirected through Denver. But not tonight. Tonight, we celebrate this season's Top 7 and mourn a world without DeAndre Brackensick. In his absence, who will sing with a squeaky falsetto? Who will make the teenage girls squeal? Who will toss his hair with reckless abandon? Sniffle. Based on song spoilers, it appears that Wednesday's (April 11) "American Idol" theme is Current Songs or Songs From The Past Three Years or maybe just Songs Dan Has Never...

DeAndre Brackensick made it all the way to eighth-place on Season 11 of American Idol, but don’t worry, it hasn’t gone to his head. DeAndre is still the kind of teenager who uses “if” not “when” to describe the album he’d like to make, who talks about using negative comments as fuel to improve his performances, and who’s still smarting over the unexpected ouster of his Vegas group member Candice Glover.

Welcome back to another round of EW.com’s American Idol Power List — in which I attempt to predict how America will vote for the finalists of Tiny Teens and you disagree with me and post your own ranking, and it’s okay because none of us plebes are fortune-tellers and the only being who knows exactly what will happen is celestial mouthpiece Ryan Seacrest.

Since getting the boot from "American Idol" last week, DeAndre Brackensick has made no bones about the fact that he had "no regrets" about anything he did on the show — in particular, his decision to flash his feathery falsetto, even if he did know it was divisive, to say the very least.
"My voice is one of the voices where either you love it or you can't stand it, and I think ['Idol' mentor] Jimmy [Iovine] didn't really have a feel for my voice," he told MTV News. "But it's fine, because I take everything he does say to me to heart. ... I have much love for Jimmy."
And perhaps realizing that some folks weren't the biggest fans of his voice, Brackensick is adamant...
