With everything going the way it is in the world right now, we’re laughing to keep less cheery emotions at bay. At least this bizarre, still-very-much-in-progress century has already produced any number of great comedies that you can fire up any time you need a serotonin burst, thanks to the ever-growing cadre of streaming services. The pandemic may be starting to recede but the specter of war and a tortured economy have occupied our minds instead: so, in desperate need of some humor, we thought it was more important than ever to give our Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century list, originally published in 2017 (and last updated in August 2021), a rethink.
We’ve added 25 new films to the Top 50 list we unveiled in August. At that time, we dropped a number of titles from the original list that are funny, but not necessarily comedies. And we’ve added some...

Starring Owen Wilson, Secret Headquarters is a high-concept family action film produced by Paramount Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. It was originally intended for theaters but was instead sent straight to Paramount+ as a way to entice new subscribers, as well as keep existing customers satisfied.

After more than a quarter-century as a movie star, Owen Wilson is finally suiting up to play a superhero in Secret Headquarters, the new Paramount Plus family flick directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. If those names sound familiar to you, it’s because they were behind such diverse and eccentric flicks as Paranormal Activity 3 & 4 (3 is by far the best movie in the franchise), the better-than-expected teen thriller Nerve, and the recent Netflix hit Project Power.
In this, Wilson plays a mild-mannered family man named Jake Kincaid who has a secret life. No, he’s not a killer or a bigamist – it’s all much more innocent than that. It turns out, he’s a legit superhero with a headquarters built under the family home. When villains attack and dad’s not home, his son and best pals must team up to defend the family fortress until...

Secret Headquarters is a rare Superhero flick that isn’t based on a previous IP. It comes from an idea by writer Christopher Yost, who has penned MCU films and an episode of The Mandalorian. It is directed by the team Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.
Obviously, the adult stars of the movie are more recognizable, but Wilson’s character’s son and his friends will also reportedly have major parts in the movie. The children in this film are played by Walker Scobell, Keith L. Williams, Momona Tamada, Kezii Curtis and Abby James Witherspoon.

The archetypal portrayal of heroic fathers is one of good, upstanding men teaching the sons who look up to them fundamental life lessons. But writer-directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (“Catfish”) expand on this conceit in “Secret Headquarters,” their family-friendly feature for the Paramount+ streaming service. Centered on a teen who discovers his aloof, neglectful father is the world’s most formidable superhero, this action-adventure delivers a modicum of skill and smarts, though it ultimately winds up as forgettable as its generic title.

Between the sprawling MCU, countless remakes and franchises, and even video game movies, it feels like Hollywood’s obsession with existing IP has sucked all the creative air out of the movie business. But original films like “Nope” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” have boasted strong box office numbers this year, igniting conversation and motivating moviegoers back into theaters. But with the highest-grossing films still overwhelmingly based on existing IP, it’s all the more refreshing when Hollywood takes a chance on an original story, especially when it comes to the usual slam dunk kids’ movies.
To that end, Starring Owen Wilson and directed by “Catfish” duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, “Secret Headquarters” feels perfectly calibrated to fly under the radar of Hollywood’s typical risk aversion.

In The Adam Project, a disposable Netflix feature probably watched by a squillion people earlier this year despite a plot so contorted it was basically a sleep aid, young actor Walker Scobell played a kid bruised by the inattention of a workaholic dad who then died, compounding the hurt. The boy’s perception shifted after a time-space wormhole brought him face to face with his grownup self, also shedding light on his father’s integrity. Scobell again plays a disgruntled son given a sci-fi shakeup in another empty-calorie adventure, Secret Headquarters, though it’s perhaps a small mercy this time that instead of Ryan Reynolds cracking wise we get the mellower Owen Wilson alternative.
Developed from a story by co-screenwriter and frequent Marvel hired hand Christopher Yost, the film was originally slated as a Paramount theatrical release before being bumped to Paramount+ on the same date.

"Whoever has this technology can do anything." Paramount Pictures has finally revealed an official trailer for Secret Headquarters, a superhero action comedy from the filmmakers Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman. This was originally set to open in theaters, but will instead be streaming directly on Paramount+ in August. Young Charlie Kincaid discovers a secret headquarters under his home that seems to belong to a powerful superhero. He shares it with his friends, and they start to believe that his estranged father might have a secret double life. When villains attack their home, they must team up to defend the headquarters. The film stars Walker, Scobell, Jesse Williams, Keith L. Williams, Momona Tamada, and Michael Peña, with Owen Wilson as Charlie's father. It's also produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, which means they spared no expense on the action. This definitely looks like it's trying to be a new Spy Kids movie, with ...

At a time when climate change is ravaging Earth and real-life interest in space organizations from NASA to SpaceX has been renewed, there is no shortage of television shows delivering interesting and informative takes on such travel. But while series such as Disney Plus’ “The Right Stuff” goes for the nostalgia play and Netflix’s “Away” contemplates the sacrifice made to leave family behind, it is Nickelodeon’s “The Astronauts” that delivers the truly unique picture of unequipped, untrained children accidentally being launched into space, now thrust together as a makeshift team to survive.
“We are being presented — especially in 2020 with all that’s happened — with portraying a future as a hopeful thing. I think people are really hungry for that — ‘if we all set aside our differences and work together toward a common goal, then we have a very bright and hopeful future,'” “The Astronauts” showrunner Daniel Knauf tells Variety.

Good Boys is a hilarious coming of age comedy directed by Gene Stupnitsky about three 12-year-old boys who skip school and end up on an adventure that involves encounters with drugs, sex, and frat boys. Hilariously young actors Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams, and Brady Noon play Max, Lucas, and Thor in this extravaganza. The boys plan to secretly borrow Max's father's beloved drone to spy on his teenage neighbor so he can learn how to kiss for an upcoming middle school party, aka "kissing party." They end up losing the drone, causing them to skip school the next day to go find it before Max's father, played by Will Forte, comes home. The film portrays their hilarious discovery to new adult concepts grouped in one chaotic day. It's "wildly raunchy" but could also be perceived as ironically educational and even wholesome in some parts, creating a good balance. ...

There is no getting around it: Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the writer-director duo behind Good Boys, the Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg-produced raunchy comedy about three sweet but fouled-mouthed sixth-graders, are shocked that the film has been so well received at the box office.
The Universal movie, which stars young actors Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams and Brady Noon, not only bowed Aug. 16 at No. 1, but it has since hauled in $71.3 million worldwide on a budget of $20 million. It was certified fresh with a score of 79 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and holds an ...

The trepidation of going into a cinema auditorium and seeing a bunch of prepubescent kids scream and shout obscenities and indulge in some terrible stuff is at an all-time high with Gene Stupnitsky’s Good Boys hailed as a kindergarten Superbad, whatever that means. It is quite strange that this film has been made in the first place.

Jacob Tremblay possesses the kind of natural sincerity that makes nearly everything he does endearing. Even when he's, say, cursing a blue streak while attempting to open a childproof lid on a gummy vitamin bottle containing illicit drugs. I definitely didn't expect to feel that way going into my screening of the 12-year-old's new comedy, Good Boys, but, along with his costars Keith L. Williams and Brady Noon, Tremblay managed to make me feel genuine affection for tweenage boys. (And that was before I even spoke with the young actor about the film on the phone.)
At its heart, Good Boys is a film about the endurance of true friendship regardless of differences. On the surface, though, it's a raunchy comedy, filled with more sex toys than you're probably expecting. When I got the chance to chat with Tremblay over the phone, he gleefully admitted that he loved getting to...

In one of the sweeter scenes from Universal's R-rated comedy Good Boys, which opened with a surprising $21 million this past weekend, a nerdy 11-year-old (Keith L. Nascent lady's man Max (Jacob Tremblay) feels hurt following a friendship-ending fight with insecure Thor (Brady Noon), and at the mention of his former buddy's name, he mutters a demure "Fuck that bitch."

Jacob Tremblay, Brady Noon and Keith L. Williams star as Good Boys on the brink of adolescence. They yearn to be able to fit in at an upcoming "kissing party," but that proves to be far more challenging -- and far more uproariously funny -- than they could have anticipated. Audiences have responded warmly to the R-rated comedy. Naturally, that makes us wonder what further R-rated hijinks may be coming to theaters. Here are three that look like they will tickle our fancy. ...

Sony’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” might not have hit No. 1 in North America, but Quentin Tarantino’s latest film is leading the way at the international box office, where it collected $53.7 million from 46 markets.
That marks the best foreign opening of Tarantino’s career, coming in ahead of 2012’s “Django Unchained.” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” debuted in a handful of international territories, including Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, before this weekend’s larger release. In a win for original content, the movie has now earned $66 million overseas and $180.5 million globally. The studio spent $90 million to produce the film.
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” had the strongest showing in the United Kingdom with a five-day launch of $8.9 million, followed by France with $6.9 million, Germany with $5.6 million, and Australia with $4.4 million. In Russia, where it bowed two weeks ago, the film has made $13 million. It has yet to launch in Mexico,...

The Bean Bag Boys, the self-appointed nickname for the trio of best friends in Universal’s “Good Boys,” are conquering much more than sixth grade. They are also leading the domestic box office, exceeding expectations and collecting $21 million on opening weekend.
“Good Boys,” which screened at 3,204 North American theaters, is a much-needed win for original comedies, a genre that’s been struggling at the box office as of late. The Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg-produced movie is the first R-rated funny film to open in first place in three years (since 2016’s “The Boss”), as well as the biggest opening for an original comedy this year.
“The bottom line is the film is absolutely hysterical,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution. “Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg knocked it out of the park. And [Rogen and Goldberg] are a brand and really own this space with a very difficult genre.

Now are we fifth graders? Or are we sixth graders?!
While that beckoning battle cry is only uttered once, its intoxicating effect can be felt at every nonsensical turn in Good Boys, an hour-and-a-half long excuse to hear preteens curse without having to prepare any sort of punishment. The unofficial, perhaps surrogate prequel to Superbad, Gene Stupnitsky’s goofball big screen debut taps into a similar plight of pubescent confusion but sets the dial back a few more years.
Don’t let that fool you. They may be younger, but they’re just as vulgar.
This hard-r-rated comedy strikes up a buddying trio of fresh-faced sixth-graders, Max (Room’s Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams) and Thor (Brady Noon). Just off the brink of elementary school and more than likely the talk, they’re prepared to take on this confusing time hand-in-hand as the Bean Bag Boys. But the bigger...

Universal’s “Good Boys” is surpassing expectations as it heads toward an estimated $20.8 million opening weekend at the domestic box office following $8.3 million in Friday ticket sales.
That’s well above earlier estimates which placed the film in the $12 million to $15 million range, marking the first R-rated comedy to open at No. 1 since Universal’s “The Boss” in 2016. And if estimates hold, the Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg-produced pic could score the best original comedy opening of 2019.
Gene Stupnitsky is making his feature directorial debut with the film, which follows three 12-year-old boys on a quest for some smooch experience after getting invited to their first kissing party. Brady Noon, Jacob Tremblay and Keith L. Williams star.
Universal also took second place at the box office with “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” which took in $3.8 million for an estimated $13.5 million third weekend. The Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham...

The oft used saying “Boys will be boys” couldn’t be more true than it is in the raunchy, new tween comedy Good Boys. Since National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978) and Porky’s (1981) the hard-r comedy has been a right-of-passage for youths, but it’s been over five years since one has reached $100M in box-office revenue. Will this Seth Rogen-produced film be the one that reverses the trend and joins four other movies he has produced that exceeded this magical number? Good Boys puts forth its best effort by paying homage to a number of classic coming-of-age films including an opening scene reminiscent of the comedy classic American Pie (1991) in this Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) meets Superbad (2007) end-of-summer flick, but the film may find that it doesn’t have enough gas to make it to the top.

Chicago – The innocence of childhood is about to be wrecked for the gazillionth time, c’est la vie. “Good Boys” is a raunchy film with foul-mouthed middle schoolers going on wacky adventures. The pretzel logic to set up these adventures are weak, but the core of the conclusion is the strength.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Forcing the boys who play the roles to spew some of the stupid lines and do some of the actions bordered on child cruelty, but the likability of the crew eventually pulls it off. The film is best when it focuses on common childhood angst like the first mix with the opposite sex and how friendships change when time marches on. This is actually toward the end of the film, as the boys do everything else to get to a “kissing party” that one of the popular kids are throwing. That everything else includes sex dolls, wanton destruction and drug buying.

When it comes to crude comedies, it doesn’t hurt to have Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky involved. Universal’s raunchy comedy “Good Boys” has launched solidly with $2.1 million at 2,600 North American locations in Thursday night previews.
The “Good Boys” number is well above last year’s R-rated “Blockers,” which took in $1.5 million in previews on its way to a $20 million opening weekend and a $60 million domestic total for Universal.
“Good Boys” follows three 12-year-olds — Jacob Tremblay, Brady Noon, and Keith L. Williams — in an R-rated comedy as the sixth-graders prep for their first kissing party. It’s opening at 3,204 venues and is expected to earn between $12 million and $15 million. “Good Boys” has connected with critics with a 79% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Universal’s “Good Boys,” the pre-teen, R-rated comedy romp from producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, earned $2.1 million at the box office in Thursday previews from 2,600 screens.
It’s a crowded yet quiet weekend at the box office where just about anything could emerge as the top earner this weekend. “Good Boys” will be in a close race with Entertainment Studio’s “47 Meters Down: Uncaged,” the horror sequel about killer sharks.
However, Sony’s “The Angry Birds Movie 2” already opened early on Tuesday this week, and it’s made $5.7 million so far in its three days of release. Then there’s “Where’d You Go, Bernadette,” a comedic adaptation of a novel starring Cate Blanchett and from director Richard Linklater that Annapurna is releasing. And New Line has “Blinded By the Light, a British comedy and drama inspired by the music of Bruce Springsteen. All of those will...

Twelve years after coming-of-age comedy “Superbad” shot Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to superstardom, the creative duo introduced the new generation of comedic talent with the debut of “Good Boys” at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, Calif., on Wednesday night.
“Working with people who aren’t jaded yet by years in Hollywood is always a good time,” Goldberg told Variety.
“It’s nice to think we might be the ones who jade them,” Rogen chimed in, before producer James Weaver added, “We’re not going to have to deal with the jading, unless there’s a sequel, which I hope happens.”

Good Boys is the latest hilarious comedy movie featuring kids in the lead – think a cross between The Goonies and Superbad and you’re someway to approaching the Stranger Things-esque comedy.
James Kleinmann talked Molly Gordon about what elements drew her to the film, how played an antagonist was a refreshing change for her, and who her comedy heroes are.
James also sat down with Director Gene Stupnitsky & writer Lee Eisenberg to talk about their new movie, how their own childhood experiences influenced the events and characters of the film, what producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg brought to the project, and why they think the nostalgia-coms are in fashion right now.
The film stars Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams, Brady Noon, Molly Gordon, Will Forte and Midori Francis. Lee Eisenberg, Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen and James Weaver have produced. It is released in the Us and the UK on the 16th of August.

“The Angry Birds Movie 2,” Sony’s animated sequel based on the phone app and video game, collected $2.6 million when it opened on Tuesday.
The follow-up to 2016’s “Angry Birds” got a jump on the weekend and is expected to earn $16 million to $18 million during its fist six days of release. Unless “Angry Birds 2” exceeds expectations, the movie could arrive well below the first film, which debuted with $38 million and ended its theatrical run with $352 million worldwide. On the plus side, “Angry Birds 2” carries a $65 million price tag, slightly less than the first movie’s $73 million budget.

Sometimes, a slight bait and switch is a good thing. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Good Boys was going to be nothing but utter filth. Sure, it’s a clear raunch fest, but that’s not the true tale of this film. They’re actually peddling a message here. Filthy as the humor is, it’s all tinged with childhood innocence and, believe it or not, a heart of pure gold. Tweens exist right at the intersection of childhood and the onset of adulthood, so this always had the potential to be funny. Well, it’s damn funny stuff, but actually has a heartwarming message about friendship to help make this far more than just a one trick pony. The film is a comedy about a trio of, you guessed it…good boys, even if they think they’re sometimes bad. Sixth graders Max (Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams...
