Tom Cruise’s status as a bonafide action star means most of his roles require a certain boldness from the actor. However, Cruise’s performance in the 2008 satirical comedy film Tropic Thunder is arguably his boldest role precisely because it goes against his star persona. In the film, Cruise plays the role of a goofy studio executive Les Grossman.
Tom Cruise as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder (2008)
One of the funniest scenes in the film depicts Grossman dancing to a hip tune. However, for Cruise to execute this scene, it required the permission of a Fast & Furious star. Given the popularity of Cruise’s role, particularly his dance routine in the film, viewers must be curious to learn why the action star required the permission of another star, and here is everything you need to know.

Tom Cruise and Robert Pattinson are two of the most iconic actors in Hollywood, with one climbing the ladder like there’s no tomorrow and the other ruling over it. While the two of them have never shared the big screen together, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they haven’t met either. Out of the many movies that both of them have individually done, it was a small skit that brought them together.
Robert Pattinson in The Batman (2022)
In a rather humorous sketch, Cruise managed to ground Pattinson in a way that forever became an embedded memory in the fans’ eyes. Both their skills are extraordinary on their own, so much so that some of the biggest blockbusters have their names on it.

Tom Cruise is the ultimate master, the best, the Goat, and whatnot when it comes to acting, stunts, and action scenes. Known for performing death-defying and horribly challenging stunts in almost all of his roles, the actor’s antics hardly leave fans stunned, who by now are unbothered by the level of commitment the actor has towards his craft.

Robert Downey Jr. plays Australian actor Kirk Lazarus in his Oscar-nominated role in Tropic Thunder. Downey Jr.’s Lazarus takes the extreme step in Method acting and undergoes pigmentation alteration surgery to play an African-American man. The role was clearly a satire that mocked the extreme lengths some actors were willing to go to for a role. Downey Jr.’s co-star in the film, Danny McBride, revealed how the actor stayed in character the whole time.

Tony Stark and Charlie Chaplin stand as two of Robert Downey Jr.’s most iconic performances. And while Rdj may have expressed relief that Chaplin didn’t nab him an Academy Award, he’s well aware of its special place in his filmography. And he may have an unlikely person to thank for even landing the part – the same person who also passed on Iron Man: Tom Cruise.
In a new Vanity Fair profile, Downey offered his gratitude to Cruise, saying, “I think I’ve got to thank Tom Cruise for a couple of things.” Ahead of being cast in 1992’s Chaplin, Downey recalled meeting with its director, who was far more enamored with Cruise, then fresh off of Days of Thunder. “I went into my agency, and Richard Attenborough was in there. I guess someone had gotten him to take a meeting with me…He held up a picture of Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman character in Tropic Thunder ended up being one of his most memorable performances. But Cruise only ended up in the movie thanks to Stiller parodying the actor years ago.

After a flurry of action set pieces and plot twists, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One concludes on a more contemplative note.
Toward the latter part of the end credits, it offers a salute to the media titan who acquired Paramount Pictures and positioned it at the center of the Viacom-cbs empires he controlled for three-plus decades. “To Sumner Redstone,” the acknowledgement reads, “film lover and friend.”
Asked about the shout-out, a Paramount rep told Deadline it was intended as a show of respect from star/producer Tom Cruise and the rest of the team behind the film, which started production less than a month after Redstone died in 2020 at age 97. But the studio declined to elaborate on the gesture.

While Tom Cruise is venturing to multiple premieres of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One around the globe, the Top Gun: Maverick star also expressed interest in returning to another of his beloved characters — Les Grossman from the comedy Tropic Thunder. It was thrown around that maybe there would be a spin-off with Grossman and Tom taking centerstage. Nothing has manifested so far, and Ben Stiller is recently finding new success with his AppleTV Original series, Severance.

Ethan Hunt’s next death-defying adventure won’t roll out in theaters until next summer, but Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie has teased the meaning behind the vague title while speaking with Empire.
“There are many things emerging from Ethan’s past,” Christopher McQuarrie said. “‘Dead reckoning’ is a navigational term. It means you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters.” Make of that what you will, but it’s important to note that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is the first half of a two-parter, which McQuarries teases will be epic. “The first thing we knew was that if it’s gonna be a big two-part adventure, it’s got to be epic,” McQuarrie said. “It’s going to have to be the instalment that swallows the rest of the franchise whole.

There are a lot of actors who end up putting so much of themselves into the characters they play that they become almost indistinguishable from one another in terms of personality or expressions. Likewise, there are characters whose entire schtick is that they are meant to remind us of the actors who play them. Well, Tom Cruise may not fully be like Les Grossman or Lestat de Lioncourt, but he definitely lives up to the monicker of his "Top Gun" character: Maverick.
It's been talked about again and again that Tom Cruise risks his life for our entertainment, and he may indeed be doing things that any rational person would call a weird death wish. From his "Mission Impossible" stunts that escalate in level of danger, to his apparent mission to outdo the "Fast and Furious" franchise and Alfonso Cuarón's "Gravity" and actually shoot a movie in space.

As with John Ford and John Wayne and Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, cinematic historians may one day speak of the partnership between Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise.
The pair spoke with Deadline as “Top Gun: Maverick” (which McQuarrie co-wrote and co-produced) continues its ascent, now the 13th biggest moneymaker of all time. The seventh “Mission: Impossible” is already in the can (“Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One”) and they are currently shooting the eighth But what will happen after that?
Believe it or not, the duo is thinking about a musical.
It’s not that nuts, when you consider that Cruise will tackle any challenge—he did, after all, teach himself to fly a helicopter for the last “Mission: Impossible.” Also, let’s not forget his performance in “Rock of Ages.” With its retro-’80s gimmick, it was a little bit corny, but the joke would not...

Tom Cruise has spent more than a decade becoming arguably the biggest action star alive, constantly defying every law of physics and putting himself in dangerous situations for our entertainment. But after so many great stunts, it can be hard to forget that Cruise is more than an action star and a former sex symbol: He is also a rather funny comedic performer and an even better dancer. Case in point: His sublime performance as Les Grossman, the gruff studio executive in 2008's "Tropic Thunder."

Exclusive: As Top Gun: Maverick passed $1.3 billion to climb to 13th place on the all time worldwide gross list, star Tom Cruise and producer Christopher McQuarrie are in the early stages of setting up three very different projects. They are still in the thick of Mission: Impossible 8 — Cruise was recently photographed in the UK’s Lake District practicing what appears to be his next death defying stunt, something called ‘speed flying’ — sources said that Cruise and McQuarrie are hatching three new film projects. One is an original song and dance-style musical they’ll craft as a star vehicle for Cruise. They are also setting up another original action film with franchise potential, and they are also fixated on Les Grossman. The latter is the gruff, dance-happy studio executive Cruise played in cameo for Tropic Thunder. It’s unclear if they will create a whole movie around Grossman, or borrow...

Two years into the pandemic, filmmakers will either ignore our current reality entirely, subtly weave it in (such as the latest from Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Joachim Trier), or approach head-on. With The Bubble, a movie about making a movie that barely feels like a movie, Judd Apatow leaves no stone unturned in mining comedy from each and every new Covid-induced social peculiarity. But rather than prove provocatively daring in its humor––Radu Jude perhaps left little else on the table in such regard––the film ends up feeling like a halfwitted, slighter version of Tropic Thunder, delivering a scattershot barrage of humor through thinly sketched characters that jump from skit to skit with very little to grasp.

The next chapter of Kurt Sutter’s “Sons of Anarchy” franchise, “Mayans M.C.” is a crime drama set in a post-Jax Teller world, in which Ezekiel “Ez” Reyes (Jd Pardo) is a prospect in the Mayans M.C. charter in the California-Mexico border town of Santo Padre.

Tom Cruise appeared on Conan last night during Conan O'Brien’s special San Diego Comic-Con week of episodes to talk about his upcoming film Top Gun: Maverick, which looks so freakin’ awesome! Anyway, while he was on the show, Cruise reprised his hilarious Tropic Thunder role of Les Grossman.
This is easily one of the best and most entertaining characters that Cruise has played in a movie, and it was hilarious to get a taste of that Les Grossman dancing fury again.
During the interview, Conan was talking to Cruise about the character and the actor really dove in and offered some fun and interesting insight on the character. He also talked about why he took on the character saying:
"I take classes all the time to learn things. I want to prove a skill, whether it's singing, music, whatever subject I'm studying. So I took dance classes and I took hip-hop classes.

“Maverick” isn’t the only character Tom Cruise brought to San Diego Comic-Con. Following a surprise appearance to promote the upcoming “Top Gun” sequel, Cruise appeared on “Conan,” where host Conan O’Brien convinced Cruise to channel Les Grossman, his overweight studio exec character from “Tropic Thunder.”
Cruise graciously agreed, doing some of Grossman’s dance moves while seated. The actor revealed he even took hip-hop classes for the 2008 comedy, which was written and directed by his friend, Ben Stiller.
Cruise also talked about the genesis of the role, explaining how he insisted Grossman have “fat hands.” That wasn’t the only physical transformation Cruise underwent for the role. To play the obese media mogul, Cruise wore a bald cap, fake chest hair and fatsuit.

Jackson as a group of actors making a Vietnam War film. The prima donnas are dropped in the middle of a jungle and have to use their acting skills to survive.
One of the memorable moments was from Cruise, who received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture for his efforts in the film.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
“Always Be My Baby” is now streaming on Netflix, and some of the excitement around the film has centered on a (very funny) cameo by Keanu Reeves as the very aggressive new boyfriend of Ali Wong’s character.
But cameos are not, of course, a new invention of the streaming age. On the contrary, the cameo is an ancient art that stretches all the way back to the time Kurt Vonnegut wrote a bad essay about his own work in “Back to School,” and possibly even before that!
With that in mind, we asked our panel of critics to name their favorite movie cameos ever. Check out their choices below:

Tom Cruise didn’t risk life and limb for you to see “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” on a TV that makes it look like a soap opera, and he wants to let you know that he’s fighting to change this.
In a new video posted from the set of “Top Gun: Maverick,” Cruise and “Fallout” director Christopher McQuarrie gave a public service announcement of sorts about “motion smoothing,” a setting on TVs that adds artificial frames to increase the frame rate of broadcasts to 60 frames per second. That’s great for sports broadcasts, but for movies, which are still framed at 24 frames per second, it makes it look like they are being played at 1.5x speed.
I’m taking a quick break from filming to tell you the best way to watch Mission: Impossible Fallout (or any movie you love) at home. pic.twitter.com/oW2eTm1IUA
