Every year numerous films are overlooked, underrated, and lost in the shuffle. 2023 was no exception. Several sci-fi movies with merit failed to garner attention, find an audience, or receive a fair appraisal. Such outcomes can be attributed to market saturation with similar themes and concepts, exemplified by this year's surplus of films centered around AI or featuring talented actors who lack significant box office appeal. Alternatively, a film may be flawed, resulting in mixed reviews and audience reactions, yet still possessing commendable qualities.
For the purposes of this list, "underrated" refers to sci-fi films that received relatively mixed or poor responses from both critics and audiences, with a focus on those that lacked significant attention or acclaim. We'll review the notable qualities of these films and explore the reasons behind their inadequate recognition, whether it's one of Marvel's unfairly maligned sequels or a quirky, futuristic sci-fi spin on conceiving a child,...

Ahead of the Showtime and Paramount+ merger, Paramount Global is cleaning house. “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In,” two drama series that premiered last year, have been canceled at the channel, IndieWire has confirmed.
In addition, Showtime will no longer be proceeding with the series “Three Women,” starring Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise, and Gabrielle Creevy. The series, which finished principal production, will be shopped to other outlets, and “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In” are also reportedly being shopped.
Paramount Global announced the integration of Showtime into Paramount+ across both streaming and linear television on January 30, revealing it will occur “later this year.” Rather than just offering Showtime on the Paramount+ app, Showtime Ott and Showtime linear will be rebranded to “Paramount+ with Showtime,” and the Showtime Ott and Anytime apps will be shut down, IndieWire is told. After just one season that aired late last year, Showtime has already made the decision to cancel the horror series “Let the Right One In,” Deadline is reporting this afternoon.
Tomorrow Studios, Deadline notes, will be shopping the series to other platforms. In other words, “Let the Right One In” could eventually come back to life on another platform.
Deadline adds to the story, “Paramount Global just announced that Showtime will be integrated into Paramount+ across both streaming and linear later this year.”

Though production on the Shailene Woodley-led drama “Three Women” has already been completed, the series will no longer premiere on Showtime, which has also decided not to renew “Let the Right One In” and “American Gigolo.” The three series are the first known casualties as Paramount moves the Showtime brand moves under the purview of Paramount+ and reprioritizes its content.
Paramount CEO Bob Bakish announced on Monday that Showtime’s cable network would be renamed to “Paramount+ With Showtime” while its streaming service would collapse into Paramount+, noting that the company “will divert investment away from areas that are underperforming and that account for less than 10 of our views. We have already begun conversations with our production partners about what content makes sense moving forward and which shows have franchise potential.”
Adapted from Lisa Taddeo’s novel of the same name, “Three Women” landed at Showtime after a competitive bidding war.

"If anything, he's the smartest person in this stupid town." Visit Films has revealed an official trailer for the indie sci-fi comedy titled Aliens Abducted My Parents And Now I Feel Kinda Left Out. How's that for a film name! Did it get your attention? This just premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival playing in the "Kids" section of the fest, and it's still seeking a distribution deal. Miserable after her family moves to a small town, a teenage aspiring journalist named Itsy befriends Calvin, her strange, space-obsessed neighbor who believes his parents were abducted by aliens, and joins him on his journey to find them. As an up-and-coming journalist, Itsy decides to write an exposé, but she discovers much more about him. It stars Emma Tremblay, Jacob Buster, Will Forte, Elizabeth Mitchell, Kenneth Cummins, and Matt Biedel. I'm curious to see this! I like the trailer, there's some good lines in here.

“Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out” is one of those great long titles that rarely ends up connected to a great movie, long or otherwise. For every “The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain” (genuinely good) there’s always a handful of “The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies” (genuinely bad) ruining the loquacious fun for everybody.
“Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out” is the latest film from director Jake Van Wagoner, starring Emma Tremblay (“Supergirl”) as Itsy Levan, one of those teenagers in movies who moves from the big city to the small town while wearing headphones in the backseat of her parents car because, like, “life,” you know? Dang it.

Sundance is kicking into high gear in Park City, Utah this week, and as it does, the rest of the world is getting a first look at the lineup as trailers for a few of the films included in the festival begin to drop. Among them is "Aliens Abducted My Parents And Now I Feel Kinda Left Out," a family-friendly movie with a title that's both a total mouthful and immediately intriguing.
"Aliens Abducted My Parents And Now I Feel Kinda Left Out" is set to premiere at the festival as one of a small handful of films in the kid-friendly section, but it doesn't look so much like a kids' movie as it does like a sweet coming-of-age indie film with a sci-fi twist. The trailer opens with a bespectacled boy stargazing with his dad (Will Forte), who tells him that an alien family could be out there looking at them right now.

[Warning: The following Q&a includes major spoilers from the season finale of Let the Right One In. If you haven’t seen it yet, well, that just bites.] Showtime’s addictive Let the Right One In closed out its first season in bloody, brutal and strangely beautiful fashion as the drama’s three main storylines collided into what can only be called a cliff-fanger. After being lured to the mansion of scientist Claire Logan (Grace Gummer), pre-teen vampire Ellie Kane (Madison Taylor Baez) and her protective father Mark (Demián Bichir) learned that she had been working on a cure for her brother Peter (Jacob Buster), who had been attacked by the same vampire that infected Mark’s little girl. At the same time, their cop neighbor Naomi (Anika Noni Rose) — who was helping her heartbroken son Isaiah (Ian Foreman) deal with his new bestie Ellie’s sudden departure — pieced together Mark’s murderous past and tracked him ...

Foreman is currently starring in the Showtime vampire series Let The Right One In, inspired by the bestselling 2004 novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist and its 2008 Swedish film adaptation.
It is described as an exploration of human frailty, strength and compassion through an elevated genre lens. It centers on Mark (Demián Bichir) and his daughter Eleanor (Taylor Baez), whose lives were changed forever 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. I've done some sci-fi stuff here and there and some fiction here and there, but the way this story really takes that fiction but puts it into such a real state of the world, I love it. It's phenomenal writing.
Earlier in the season, we see Peter's reaction to his father's death. Do you think he was upset about his demise, or was he putting on a front to appease Claire?
It's a mix of both. I like that question. I think that's a really good one because I mean,...

Last year, we saw a list of thirteen movies that would be riffed during the new season of the classic series Mystery Science Theater 3000, which is now being released through the show’s own indie streaming platform The Gizmoplex. On that list was a movie called The Christmas Dragon, which was said to be about “a group of orphans going on a journey to restore the lost magic and save Christmas.” What wasn’t mentioned at that time is that original MST3K host Joel Hodgson will be returning to riff The Christmas Dragon with current hosts Jonah Ray and Emily Marsh!
The Christmas Dragon episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 will be reaching the Gizmoplex on December 16th. The livestream premiere begins at 8pm Eastern. Here’s the information:

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the series premiere of Let the Right One In.] Let the Right One In takes most of its inspiration from the 2008 Swedish film, according to its cast. Grace Gummer, Nick Stahl, Kevin Carroll, and Jacob Buster stopped by TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine’s studio at New York Comic Con 2022 to chat about the Let the Right One In series premiere, which debuted October 9 on Showtime. And in the above video interview, we dive into the premiere cliffhanger and what it means for the show moving forward. Let the Right One In started as a book and has gotten two film iterations since. The Swedish film seems to be this cast’s favorite version. “We try to capture the spirit of that movie while at the same time creating our own universe,” says Stahl, whose character, Matthew, is a bit of an enigma in the premiere. Sometimes it’s easy to predict the classic stories that will be adapted over and over and over again. Nobody bats an eye at the latest take on War and Peace or David Copperfield, or the latest production of Hamlet.
Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist’s Låt den rätte komma in isn’t necessarily the most obvious choice as 21st century Shakespeare, but the haunting 2004 vampire novel keeps being adapted in different forms and I somehow keep loving the variations and permutations. The book is already a dazzling revision of classic vampire lore and Tomas Alfredson’s 2008 feature Let the Right One In is a masterful mixture of horror, suspense and coming-of-age drama. Matt Reeves’ 2010 American take, with its name tweaked to Let Me In, is one of the most successful of unnecessary remakes, effectively echoing Alfredson’s film and adding just enough...

"Brace yourself for what you're about to see." Showtime has debuted a full official for their new take on Let the Right One In, a streaming series re-adaptation of the beloved Swedish vampire book by John Ajvide Lindqvist. This new series centers on Mark and his daughter Eleanor, whose lives were changed 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. This new version expands the story to indicate this vampirism is a "sickness" they're trying to cure before it infects others, while focusing on more than just this father and daughter. Huh, okay. The series stars Demián Bichir as Mark and Madison Taylor Baez as the vampire girl, along with Anika Noni Rose, Grace Gummer, Kevin Carroll, Ian Foreman, and Jacob Buster. I'll continue to say that I'm a huge fan of the original film and the American remake from Matt Reeves. This still doesn't look that good, Americanized...
