Exclusive: Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, now best known as the director behind beautiful, taut features like Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, wrote to Swedish screen legend Ingmar Bergman sometime in the early 2000s with an idea. Bergman’s response was characteristically colorful.
“What the hell is this? What do you mean?” Bergman told Alfredson.
Alfredson had told the Persona filmmaker that he wanted to remake Faithless, the 2000 feature Bergman had written about an imaginary woman who recollects her painful experience of adultery to an aging filmmaker. As the final work in progress wrapped on Friday, Göteborg ‘s head of TV Drama Vision Cia Edström and head of industry and Nordic Film Market Josef Kullengård could finally relax after a mission well accomplished.
Two of their biggest challenges this year – hosting an industry showcase for 700-plus international delegates in a brand-new venue, the Clarion Hotel Draken, and lifting the Nordic industry’s moral by the crisis in the drama sector – had been successfully met. Variety drills down on how and why:
All-Time Record Attendees
As many as 2,029 accredited delegates registered for the festival and industry showcases at the 47th Göteborg Film Festival, and parallel TV and film markets, the largest in the Nordic region. “We’ve never hit this silver line,” said Kullengård. The 18th TV Drama Vision drew 729 delegates, the Nordic Film Market 556.

Glowering from atop his mountainous cheekbones, Mads Mikkelsen cuts a hard, intimidating figure in the The Promised Land. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel from a screenplay co-written by the prolific Anders Thomas Jensen, the film casts Mikkelsen as real-life 18-century war veteran Ludvig Kahlen, a proud man of humble origins who hopes to establish the first viable homestead in Denmark’s Jutland heath. Many others have tried to cultivate the barren lowland in the name of the king, but none have succeeded. “The world’s asshole,” one man calls this no man’s land roamed by outlaws and outcasts. One look into Kahlen’s eyes is to know that he’ll succeed at transforming the heath into farmable land.
In large part for the way it paints morality in black and white, The Promised Land is an old-fashioned western, and what it lacks in nuance it more than makes up for in showmanship.

You do not fuck with Mads Mikkelsen.
There are a number of takeaways to be had from The Promised Land, the excellent prestige drama-cum-bloody payback flick straight outta Denmark. The rich in 18th century Scandinavia were as entitled, immoral, and sociopathic as they are in 21st century everywhere. Just because you’ve fought for a country doesn’t mean it will give you a fair shake. Magnolia Pictures has revealed the trailer for the Mads Mikkelsen-led drama ‘The Promised Land.’
In 18th century Denmark, Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen) – a proud, ambitious, but impoverished war hero – sets out to tame a vast, uninhabitable land on which seemingly nothing can grow. He seeks to start farming crops, build a colony in the name of the King, and gain a noble title for himself.
This beautiful but forbidding area is also under the rule of the merciless Frederik De Schinkel, a preening nobleman who realises the threat Kahlen represents to his power. Struggling against the elements and local brigands, Kahlen is joined by a couple who have fled the clutches of the rapacious De Schinkel. As this group of misfits begins to build a small community in this inhospitable place, De Schinkel swears vengeance, and the confrontation between him and Kahlen promises to be as violent and intense as these two men.

Icon Film Distribution has picked up The Promised Land, the Danish period drama starring Mads Mikkelsen for the U.K.
The Nordic Western sees Mikkelsen reteam with Nikolaj Arcel, the director of 2012’s A Royal Affair, a steamy period piece that scored an Oscar nomination for best international feature and launched the career of co-star Alicia Vikander.
Mikkelsen stars as Captain Kahlen, an 18th-century soldier who struggled, against all odds, to cultivate the barren Jutland heath and start a settlement there. But a local landowner, Frederik De Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg) is determined to stop him, fearing the arrival of settlers will weaken his position as lord of the realm. The Promised Land is based on Ida Jessen’s Danish best-seller The Captain and Ann Barbara and was inspired by real events, though the book and film are fiction. Amanda Collin and Gustav Lindh co-star.

They don’t make them like this any more, except when they do. Bastarden (disappointingly renamed The Promised Land in English) is a historical epic out of Denmark that has all the virtues of a midday movie remembered from childhood, the kind of thing you watched when your mother kept you home with a bad cold: a setting sometime in the olden days, a lawless frontier, sword fights and a gaggle of delectably evil baddies. Those seamy aristocrats and their henchmen, given to torturing, murdering and raping their oppressed tenants, are just lining up to have the tables turned, giving them a rich dose of their own torturing, murdering medicine. Hooray!
Better still, The Promised Land has one element those midday movies missed, simply because of the time they were made: Mads Mikkelsen. Mads as Ludwig Kahlen, soldier settler in some of the most inhospitable country on Earth, is at his staunch,...

Dark, violent historical epics have a special place in my heart, and the upcoming Mads Mikkelsen film "The Bastard" looks like it will be period-piece perfection. The film, which stars Mikkelsen as a 17th-century soldier charged with taking over a large swath of land for the king of Denmark, looks like the kind of movie that belongs alongside "The Northman" or "Valhalla Rising," which also starred Mikkelsen. The upcoming Danish-language film is still in production, so there aren't many marketing materials to share just yet. Thankfully, there are at least some great behind-the-scenes stills shared by the production company behind "The Bastard," Zentropa.
While it's still early, there are some interesting details available about the film, including the premise, possible release window, and more about the cast and crew. Here's everything we know so far about this moody-looking cinematic slice of Scandinavian history.

Alexander Skarsgård delivers a wholly remarkable performance as the lead in the new film, The Northman, from visionary director Robert Eggers.
On the verge of manhood, Prince Amleth (Oscar Novak) witnesses his father’s (Ethan Hawke) murder at his uncle’s hand. Two decades later, a grown Amleth (Skarsgård), undertakes a quest to rescue his mother (Nicole Kidman) from his murderous uncle and avenge his father.
Director Robert Eggers imbues all of the moodiness and artistic flourish he exhibited in his earlier films such as The Lighthouse (2019) and The Witch (2015). Written along with acclaimed Icelandic author Sjón, Eggers’ script is unrelenting in its portrayal of Amleth’s struggles and associated hardships. But what is refreshing is that it never feels as though Amleth’s sole purpose for existing is to exact revenge for his father. Instead, it plays as though he is more intent on trying to live some sort...

Visionary filmmaker Robert Eggers’ latest, The Northman, is set to storm theaters everywhere this weekend, courtesy of Focus Features. Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Gustav Lindh, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe, The Northman is a Viking epic centered around a prince who must avenge his father’s murder and reclaim his right to the throne after his uncle betrays his family.
During the recent press day for The Northman, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Eggers about The Northman, and during the conversation, he discussed how the project challenged him in new ways, including creating a story that was much larger in scale than The Witch and The Lighthouse, and involved some incredibly complicated battle scenes as well. Robert Eggers creates worlds you can feel, and worlds that feel like they can reach out and feel you back. From his first chilling tale The Witch (2015), and his maddening dream that followed in The Lighthouse (2019), Eggers has once again crafted a world that you can’t take your eyes away from.
The Northman blends our world with the mythic, mystical world of Norse mythology. A world that conjures both madness, and delightful daring as we follow Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) on a blood-soaked revenge quest that embodies both the madness and mythicality from Eggers’ previous work. From the eyes of a young boy (Oscar Novak) to “many years later”, Amleth vows revenge on his uncle (Claes Bang) after he kills...

“The Wife” director Björn Runge was at Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival over the weekend to tease his stars-packed passionate Swedish drama “Burn All My Letters” which Sf Studios is producing.
Runge was on the ground at the festival’s industry sidebar along with his producer Annika Sucksdorff, and lead actors Asta Kamma August (“The Pact”) and Gustav Lindh (“Queen of Hearts”). The movie is an adaptation of Alex Schulman’s bestselling novel by the same name. Bill Skarsgård, who wasn’t there in Goteborg, also plays a leading role in the film.
The several clips played during the Goteborg presentation, which showcased the film’s dedicated performances, atmosphere and glossy production design, drew rowdy applause from industry participants and locals. Runge also revealed that Jacob Mühlrad, the celebrated Swedish art music composer, is creating his first film score for the movie.
