For cinematographer, Antonio Calvache, one of the most memorable moments of his career was when he first saw the area that would be used for shooting the sugar cane fields in “Queen Sugar.” “It’s a gift to be able to work in a project where the location has so much personality,” he tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematography panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). That location ended up serving as a huge influence, not just on him as a cinematographer, but the entire production. “It was our biggest source of inspiration for me and everybody in the team of ‘Queen Sugar’ to bring up the locals, these farms, the lushness and the history behind all of that.”

The fifth season of Queen Sugar was delayed due to the pandemic and it ended up airing in the first half of 2021. Will Queen Sugar be cancelled or renewed for season seven? Stay tuned.

Disney Channel’s original 1997 version of Under Wraps had many of the elements family comedies need: three cute and precocious leads, a fun-loving mummy and plenty of funny moments. There was just one thing missing — diversity.
All of the movie’s leading characters were white. But the revamped Under Wraps, which premieres tonight at 8/7c on the Disney Channel, shakes all of that up with an inclusive cast that incorporates more people of color. Two roles that were initially played by men are now filled by women, and one lead has same-sex parents.

When production on Season 5 of the OWN series “Queen Sugar” was forced to shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic last year, creator Ava DuVernay and her team decided it would make the most sense to retool the show to the current moment. That meant not just folding in the effects of the deadly health crisis in the show’s narrative, but also the murder of George Floyd, the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests that broke out last summer, and even the death of “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman.
During an April episode of the show, Blue (Ethan Hutchison) is shown mourning Boseman, who died in August of last year, during a conversation with Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe). Spoiler Alert: This post contains details of Queen Sugar’s Season 5 finale
“Looking back over the season, as emotional as it was for people to watch it when it aired, it was very emotional even when we shot it,” says Queen Sugar executive producer Paul Garnes of the fifth season of the Ava DuVernay created series and its Onward finale last night.
After a 10-episode run that chronicled and detailed the coronavirus pandemic, police violence, the death of George Floyd, and the politics of division on Black America, the OWN drama based on Natalie Baszile’s 2014 novel took the lacerated Bordelon siblings, their offspring, extended family and rural Louisiana community to an optimistic place, or sorts.
The DuVernay and showrunner Anthony Sparks co-penned Season 5 finale saw a Covid infected Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) reach out to ex-husband Davis West (Timon Kyle Durrent) and find new depths to the initial dismay of...

Tuesday’s Season 5 premiere of Queen Sugar perfectly captured that “calm before the storm” vibe in the early months of 2020 before the Covid pandemic turned the world as we knew it upside down.
It was just a year ago when large groups of people were congregating in close proximity in homes and restaurants without masks and social distancing guidelines. On one hand, it made sense that the installment, titled “Late-February 2020,” would show these scenes. As the OWN drama’s creator and EP, Ava DuVernay, recently revealed to TVLine, the first batch of Season 5 episodes were shot before the pandemic shuttered...

When the coronavirus pandemic shut production down across the film industry back in March, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) had just resumed production on season five of “Queen Sugar.”
The network had finished shooting just one episode. During the shutdown, producer Ava DuVernay and her team including Paul Garnes, head of physical production for Array and executive producer on the show, met frequently to discuss the changing landscape. The existing scripts didn’t fit in a pandemic world that also included Black Lives Matter and an upcoming election.
When shooting resumed, DuVernay and Garnes had decided the Bordelon family would tackle the Black Lives Matter movement and coronavirus.
Garnes spoke with Variety about navigating the new season amid hurricanes and a pandemic.
How easy was it to come up with the decision to address coronavirus in this new season of “Queen Sugar?”
It was a pretty organic process. Like everyone else,...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes details about tonight Queen Sugar Season 4 finale
“As we’ve gone through the four seasons it’s been a juggling act to make sure that this feels relevant, but also has the intimacy of the black family dynamic that so many of us who work on it know to be true and want the show to be even more representative of,” Queen Sugar creator Ava DuVernay says of tonight’ Season 4 finale and the heart of the NAACP Image Awards winning Own series.
Certainly the “I Am” episode penned by showrunner Anthony Sparks was dynamic, to put it mildly. Coming off a season that packed more into 13 episodes than most series do into their entire run, there was an election, a diary, a corrupt revelation, reconciliation and forgiveness between Rutina Wesley’s Nova Bordelon and Kofi Siriboe portrayed brother Ralph Angel. Amidst a politically inspired arrest,...
