Gary Lineker has been a major topic of discussion for days, following his tweet in response to Suella Braverman’s immigration bill.
Last week, the government announced a new policy to halt small boat crossings. It will result in the deportation of asylum seekers who arrive via boat to Rwanda or another “safe third country” without hearing their asylum claim.
Reacting to the news, Lineker expressed his distaste for the decision and responded to someone who pushed back on his view on Twitter.
He wrote: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.
“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”
After questions were raised about whether the football pundit had broken BBC’s impartiality rules with his social media use,...

Where to Watch “Nadiya Bakes”: Netflix
There’s a camera angle in “Nadiya Bakes” that lets you watch pies and cakes and pastries as they cook. It’s time-lapsed and without the filter of the glass of an oven door, but it’s a tiny touch that shows you that making these kind of delicacies don’t happen by accident.

The first time we meet Nadiya Hussain in the “Great British Baking Show” tent, she’s trying to convince the judges that making a cake with green cardamom is a good idea. “Is that the only flavor?” Mary Berry asks, delicately but with enough of a point to convey her skepticism. Paul Hollywood, blunt as always, raises his eyebrows and informs her that the “interesting” choice of cardamom “could be fantastic, or it could be disastrous.” Such intrigued but ultimately wary questions about “exotic” flavors, familiar to most any person of color who’s competed on the show over the years, followed Hussain throughout the season — which she eventually won, with a final “Big Fat British Wedding Cake” showstopper draped in marshmallow fondant and custom sari. (And for the record: Berry and Hollywood ended up loving that first “very clever” cardamom cake.)
Six years later, Hussain is a beloved baking personality unto herself.

The British Film Commission has issued the latest update to its UK industry coronavirus safety protocols after England was placed in a third lockdown. The updates make clear that shoots can continue following the government giving filming the greenlight. “Anyone who cannot work from home should continue to travel to their workplace. This covers all aspects of the film and television production process, including scouting and recces,” the protocols state. “Filming can continue to take place in the premises of businesses that are closed to the general public due to the lockdown.” The update adds that clinically extremely vulnerable people “should not go to the workplace if they live or work in areas where shielding advice is active.” Access the guidelines here.

With coronavirus stay-at-home measures extending into their fourth month, people have been cooking more than ever. Here, six celebrity chefs recommend staples that everyone needs in their pantry.
Alton Brown
Dried beans. You can feed a family of four for six months on different kinds of beans. Beans are cheap. They’re plentiful. They’re incredibly nutritious. They can be turned into anything, from dips to soups to salads. You can do anything if you’ve got enough beans.
Padma Lakshmi
You should always have onions, garlic, ginger, potatoes, rice, quinoa, cornmeal and fennel, because those things add flavor to your dishes. Then there’s your spice kit — oregano, thyme, crushed red chili, cumin, coriander. You should have things that are not as common like sumac and za’atar, which are from the Middle East and add great flavor to dishes that aren’t necessarily Middle Eastern.

The BBC may have lost The Great British Bake Off to Channel 4 but it is now cooking up a new baking competition.
The British public broadcaster has ordered Celebration from Bristol-based production company Hungry Gap Productions. The show is set to air on BBC Two and emerged after putting out a casting call for contestants.
“Do you wow your neighbours with your amazing party food? Are your delicious desserts the star of every special occasion? Does your colleague make the best birthday cakes? We would love to hear from amateur cooks and bakers who would like to be part of an exciting prime-time food programme all about celebration food. We’re on the hunt for amateur cooks who make the UK’s best celebration food. Whether it’s you, or somebody you know, please get in touch,” producers said.
So far, sounds suspiciously like Bake Off.

As the BBC’s parental-respite service continues its fine tradition of giving mums something pretty to look at, we ask who can follow Captain America
Chris Evans is going to read a CBeebies Bedtime Story soon. Actual Captain America, from all three thousand Captain America films, will sit down and lull the nation’s toddlers to sleep with a sonorous reading of Even Superheroes Have Bad Days by Shelly Becker and Eda Kaban on 10 May.
Admittedly this is probably more interesting to parents than toddlers. My two-year-old, largely speaking, doesn’t care about the box office grosses of the people reading stories to him. He’s over the moon if they happen to be softly spoken and sincere like Nadiya Hussain from the Great British Bake Off, and actively less over the moon when, say, David Hasselhoff ends up bellowing a broken assembly line of words that sound as if...

Media misrepresentation of Muslims, and fear of reproach from within their communities, are hindering depictions of the less “extreme” and pluralist aspects of Islam, according to leading filmmakers.
Fozia Khan, producer of The Garden’s upcoming Channel 4 documentary series The Mosque, said that while extreme voices are readily available, it had been difficult to persuade many average Muslims to take part.
Describing the Birmingham-set series as “one of the hardest projects I’ve ever worked on”, Khan told a panel session at Sheffield Doc/Fest: “People are sick of seeing the same one-sided view of Muslims.

Have you ever heard of that food-shopping rule of thumb? You know, never go when you're hungry. Passing the sweet smells of the bakery section on an empty stomach is pretty much torture. The advice applies to watching most, if not all, TV cooking shows too. Seriously, have you perchance sat down to watch "Hell's Kitchen" on an empty stomach? No, you haven't because you don't survive that. No one survives that.
Imagine yourself sitting through an entire hour-long episode, watching chefs compete by preparing the most delectable culinary creations you've ever seen, with the background noise of ... your stomach rumbling like thunder on a warm summer day. You can't even control the reaction because it's basically a Pavlovian response to the barren wasteland of a stomach you've left for yourself. Add the fact that after watching these shows sans-snacks, the only thing you will crave is food from a...

The queen on her 90th birthday in Windsor, England. Image Source: Getty / Chris Jackson Queen Elizabeth may have two birthdays (yes, two), but the actual date of her birth is April 21 - and she's marking her big day in her typical, tireless manner. She's celebrating the special occasion at her home at Windsor Castle along with her husband, Prince Philip. And even though the queen usually spends her birthdays privately - and who could blame her - the arrival of her 90th year is bringing a break from tradition. She began the day by greeting well-wishers in Windsor, the first of many activities. Here's a brief rundown of her global birthday party: The walkabout. Queen Elizabeth, dressed in green and wearing a brooch from her impressive collection, did a walkabout in the town of Windsor, a place that is close to the queen's heart since she spent much of her childhood there.

Nadiya Hussain is set to join the 'Loose Women' panel. The 'Great British Bake Off' winner seemingly won over the hearts of the producers when she was interviewed on the lunchtime chat show last month, as she's been pulled back in to guest-host the programme on a one-off basis this week. She said of her new gig: ''I was so happy when I was asked to be a guest panellist on 'Loose Women'. I had such a great time as a guest I just couldn't say no! ''I'm so excited and ready to let loose and discuss all the hot...
