The Walking Dead is over, but like the zombies at the heart (er, brains?) of the tale, the franchise lives on.
Clocking in at 11 seasons and 177 episodes all told, the AMC horror drama shuffled off into the afterlife, only to birth a bevy of spinoff shows, most of which center on beloved characters from the original series like the Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) reunion series The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. Beyond those continuing adventures, there are also the spinoffs without too many overt ties to the “flagship” Walking Dead, including the very first of these spinoffs, Fear the Walking Dead (also now in the grave, joined there by the two-seasons-and-out The Walking Dead: World Beyond and single season anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead).

Jon Bernthal is returning to his most punishing role. The actor will reprise Frank Castle, aka antihero the Punisher, in Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again for Disney+, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Bernthal joins Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio in the series, which begins shooting in New York this month. In a departure from other Marvel series, which come in at six or nine episodes per season, Born Again is planned as a whopping 18-episode epic. Writers and executive producers Matt Corman and Chris Ord are behind the show, which is expected to bow in the spring of 2024.
Marvel could not be reached for comment.
Born Again takes its title from a landmark Daredevil storyline published in 1986, written by Frank Miller and drawn by David Mazzuchelli. The show is deviating from that plot, although by how much is unclear. The Punisher, for example, made no appearance in the comic story.

From the pilot episode to the recent series finale, Judith Grimes has been a handy bellwether for how much time has passed in "The Walking Dead." She started out as just an embryo, the result of a dalliance between Lori Grimes and Shane Walsh. Judith was finally born in a rather traumatic episode of "The Walking Dead" season 3, and steadily grew into a toddler over the next few seasons. A six-year time jump in the middle of season 9 boosted her to nine years old, and by the time the show signed off with season 11's "Rest in Peace," Judith is approximately 11 or 12 years old.
She also has a little brother, Rick Grimes Jr. (aka Rj), the result of Rick Grimes Sr. and Michonne coupling up. As of the end of the series, however, Rick Sr. still has no idea that he has a son, since he was blown off a...

This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead season 11 episode 19.
Over a decade ago, The Walking Dead started out as a series depicting the horrors of a post-apocalyptic world in which re-animed humans have come back after death to eat the living. This is all very typical of the zombie genre, but fans were quickly treated to what made the show different, and actually quite revolutionary compared to its rivals. After the initial threat of a walker (the most common name for the zombies) or two has been snuffed out, humans have to worry about recreating a world that is habitable for the survivors. This quickly leads to the most realistic epiphany in the series: people are the biggest threat to each other, end of the world or not, because humans are often inherently selfish and weak.

The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 17
The opening moments of this week’s The Walking Dead premiere reach deeply into the show’s history, showing a selection of moments that go back to the very first moments of “Days Gone Bye” and carry forward to the current day, with Daryl clearing Walkers while attempting to hide from the show’s latest in a long line of smiling threats, Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton). One of the fun realizations from the cold opening is that the cavalcade of villains, from Shane Walsh through to Negan Smith, tend to be smiling more often than not, while our heroes look serious about the business of survival in a world dominated by the dead. There must be some sort of appeal to giving into the darkness that thrives in petty power-hungry wannabes like Hornsby and Sebastian Milton (Teo Rapp-Olsson...

When The Wire premiered on HBO nearly 20 years ago, it revolutionized the way television could tell a story. David Simon’s crime drama created a world in which we got to see multiple sides to the same person and the institutions they occupy. Cops were seen through the eyes of criminals, politicians were brought to life behind-the-scenes, and even homeless folks were given space to demonstrate their struggles and humanity. The show was a living, breathing diorama of Baltimore projected onto the small screen. There’s never been another show since with so much to say about the setting it’s played out in.
Even though ratings were low during the original run and it didn’t receive any Emmy nominations, new fans and older ones alike have made The Wire one of TV’s ultimate classics. With concepts...

Few actors are defined by the word “badass” the way that Jon Bernthal is. From playing the tragic villain Shane Walsh on “The Walking Dead” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s version of the brutal Frank Castle in “The Punisher,” right down to roles where he isn’t cracking heads—his eerily spot-on portrayal of Lee Iacocca in “Ford v Ferrari,” for example—Bernthal exudes an endless cool and charisma, while still looking like he could take on anyone in the room if he needed to.

If you’re looking for someone to throw a punch or take on a zombie horde, well, Jon Bernthal’s probably your guy. But when you’re looking for an actor who can credibly serve-and-volley, he might not spring to mind.
That was the dilemma facing “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green when he was looking for someone to portray Rick Macci, the tennis coach who took a chance on a young Venus and Serena Williams. Bernthal has made a career playing tough guys, such as gritty Marvel antihero Frank Castle or “The Walking Dead’s” Shane Walsh. When looking for an actor to play Tony Soprano’s father for “The Many Saints of Newark,” Bernthal, who has broken his nose more than a dozen times, made perfect sense. But to play the happily square Macci, he wasn’t an obvious fit. Imagine casting the Punisher as Ned Flanders.

Showtime has given a series order to American Gigolo, its long-in-the-works series adaptation, with Ford v. Ferrari and The Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal attached to star and produce. The project hails from David Hollander (Ray Donovan) Paramount TV Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television.
Paramount TV originally teamed with Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the film noir classic starring Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton, to explore a TV series adaptation in 2014. The project was set up for development at Showtime in 2016 with Neil Labute as writer. It has since gone through multiple incarnations. The project, with Hollander as writer & EP and Bernthal starring, received a pilot order at Showtime in March 2020.
In a star-making turn, the 1980 movie featured Gere as Julian Kaye, a male escort in Los Angeles.

Characters don’t usually last too long on AMC’s zombie epic The Walking Dead.
Frequent, major character deaths are bound to happen amid a dangerous post-apocalyptic environment rife with ravenous corpses. The culling of cast is also just a fact of life for a physically demanding acting job that requires performers to endure grueling Georgia summers for an indeterminate number of seasons.
At this point in The Walking Dead’s run, the number of significant dead characters are sure to outnumber the living. While frequent casting turnover might be at times difficult to stomach for viewers, it presents a rare opportunity for collectors.
Many major pop culture properties have entered into the collectible trading card game. The Walking Dead, however, is a particularly apt fit. What better way to keep track of the series’ many characters and to memorialize the ones we’ve lost...

Following the end of The Walking Dead in 2022, AMC will deliver two new spinoff series. The sequel show starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride is the one getting all the attention, but there’s also anthology project Tales of the Walking Dead, which will focus on different characters, places and periods every week. It’s widely expected that this will be used to bring back many old faces from the parent show, too.
In fact, insider Daniel Richtman has now revealed one of these faces, sharing on his Patreon page that AMC is interested in getting Laurie Holden back to play Andrea in Tales. That’s all we know right now, but it follows on from previous reports that said former cast members Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori Grimes) and Jon Bernthal (Shane Walsh) will also be coming back to guest star on the show. Jon Bernthal may not be done with The Walking Dead universe yet. The Punisher star has gone on to a lot of great projects since his time on the post-apocalyptic drama, but his role as Rick Grimes’ best pal-turned-enemy Shane Walsh is still one of his most popular characters. He last played the part for a cameo in Andrew Lincoln’s final episode in 2018, but he could be back for a bigger chunk of screentime in an upcoming spinoff show.

The Walking Dead has featured many memorable villains over the years, but the original was Shane Walsh, as played by Jon Bernthal. He and Rick Grimes used to be best buddies, but once Rick woke up out of his coma following the apocalypse, tensions immediately ran high between them. Shane had started up a romantic relationship with Lori Grimes and the pair fought it out to be the alpha male of their group.
In season 2, Shane went off the deep end when he began killing others, including sacrificing Otis to save his own skin and executing Randall, a prisoner, even though everyone had agreed to spare his life. He eventually led Rick out into the woods to kill him, but Rick managed to turn the tables. Shame then reanimated and was put down by young Carl. This happened in the penultimate episode of the second season.

Living in a post-apocalyptic world is no picnic, that’s for sure, and The Walking Dead has dug deep into the terrible things the survivors have to do to protect themselves and their loved ones over its first decade. No character understands this struggle better than Rick Grimes, who has had to get his hands dirty many times to keep his friends and family safe. In fact, fans often discuss whether he’s really a hero when he’s taken so many lives across the show.
But how many people has Rick killed? Not including the zombies he’s cut down, he’s had to make the difficult decision to end a human life so many times that it’s hard to keep track. Here’s a pretty exhaustive list though as put together by ScreenRant of every death caused by Rick from season 2, when he takes his first victims,...

You may know him as Frank Castle or even the ketchup-loving Brad from Wolf of Wall Street, but before he broke into the Hollywood big leagues, Jon Bernthal made a name for himself through The Walking Dead and, more specifically, Shane Walsh.
He was the unhinged loose cannon to Rick’s calm, collected leader, and their fraught friendship served as the backbone for season 1. Bernthal’s troubled character was ultimately killed at the tail-end of season 2, and while he was understandably upset about leaving such a popular show, the actor knows all too well that it allowed his career to grow and evolve far beyond the wasteland of AMC’s zombie drama.

You can go ahead and add The Sopranos prequel movie to the list of big-name projects lining Jon Bernthal’s slate.
The former Walking Dead actor has been on something of a roll ever since he departed AMC’s hit zombie drama – save for a brief cameo in last year’s mid-season finale, Bernthal’s Shane Walsh hasn’t been spotted since season 2 – given he’s nabbed roles in everything from The Wolf of Wall Street to David Ayer’s gritty WWII tank movie, Fury.
And now, having wrapped season 2 of The Punisher, Jon Bernthal has set sights on his latest gig: The Sopranos prequel movie which, according to Variety, will have him star opposite Vera Farmiga of The Conjuring franchise. New Line failed to disclose any casting information, so it’s unclear as yet who Bernthal and Farmiga will be playing when Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) steps behind the lens to direct.

It’s finally here.
Following up on yesterday’s nail-biting teaser, AMC has premiered the first full trailer for The Walking Dead season 9, and it’s every bit as tense and engrossing as we had come to expect.
We also get a better read on the show’s time jump, and how our survivors wind up in the bombed-out Washington D.C., which has clearly felt the full effects of the zombie apocalypse. The 16-episode ninth season is shaping up to be Rick’s last hurrah – ditto for Lauren Cohan – so this footage is somewhat bittersweet, not least because we’re also about to see the return of Jon Bernthal’s Shane Walsh, who shot to fame as Rick’s partner all throughout season 1.
For season 9, though, this first-look footage brings the curtain down with a sneak peek at the new threat that awaits Rick and his ragtag group. Buckle up,...

Broadway actress Lauren Ridloff has been cast in Season 9 of “The Walking Dead” for a multiple-episode arc, TheWrap has confirmed.
Ridloff is the first deaf actress to be featured on the long-standing zombie drama, and she will play Connie, a character who is also deaf and uses American Sign Language to communicate. Connie is a character who first appears in Issue 127 of the comics on which the show is based, part of a small survival group that shows up after the time jump, led by a woman named Magna — though in the comics, Connie is not deaf. Connie is still alive in the comics.
“The National Association of the Deaf (Nad) applauds the casting decision by The Walking Dead to have Tony Award nominee Lauren Ridloff portray an important character on the show. We encourage more shows and movies to cast Deaf Talent for every kind of role,” said Howard A.

Good news, everyone! Michael Cudlitz is returning to The Walking Dead for season 9. Before you start wondering how he’ll be back as Abraham after Negan bashed his brains in during the season 7 premiere, though, we should probably mention that he’s coming back in a purely behind the scenes capacity.

Amid panels for Preacher, Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad‘s 10-year reunion (10 years!), the network has detailed its plans for The Walking Dead season 9 and its sibling series, Fear The Walking Dead, which is currently in the midst of its fourth season.
The former will be of particular interest to longtime Walking Dead fans, as this year’s installment will signal Rick’s last hurrah, all the while bidding farewell to Maggie Rhee as fellow series veteran Lauren Cohan makes the transition over to ABC drama, Whiskey Cavalier.
It’s the end of an era, then, but you know how they say these things tend to go out with a bang? AMC has officially unveiled its key art for The Walking Dead season 9 featuring a buzzcut Rick Grimes and a Washington D.C. that’s beginning to crumble...

For the best part of a decade, AMC’s The Walking Dead has thrilled its audience at San Diego Comic-Con with megaton announcements and nail-biting trailers, while also parading new cast members – like, say, Jeffrey Dean Morgan – in front of enthused fans.
But this year, The Walking Dead‘s Sdcc will be bittersweet in that it’ll signal the beginning of the end for Rick Grimes and Maggie Rhee – Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan, respectively – who are poised to bow out of AMC’s zombie drama soon after season 9 kicks off. In his steed, Daryl Dixon will take over as the show’s leading man, and in anticipation of The Walking Dead‘s return to Hall H, Fox’s international account has seemingly unveiled the official promo image for the next run.

Rick Grimes is a man fast approaching the end of his tether.
Since hobbling out of Harrison Memorial Hospital all those years ago, Andrew Lincoln’s jaded lead has lost his wife and only son to the zombie apocalypse, leaving him a broken, bitter shell of his former self.
So it should come as no surprise that Lincoln and The Walking Dead are about to go their separate ways, after it was revealed that his Rick Grimes will appear in only six episodes of the upcoming season. In doing so, he’ll hand over leading man duties to Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), while AMC has since confirmed that Jon Bernthal’s Shane Walsh will be returning for one very special episode – Andrew Lincoln’s last, perhaps?

Just when you think The Walking Dead is done with surprises, AMC's zombie drama comes back with a major curveball. After Andrew Lincoln confirmed his decision to exit the show after season nine, fans have been more than a little shaken when it comes to the future of the show. Now, in a surprising turn of events, The Walking Dead is throwing an old fan-favorite into the mix: The Punisher star Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as Shane Walsh.
According to TVLine, sources confirm that the actor will be returning for one episode. As you might recall, Shane is killed in season two during a fight with his former best friend, Rick Grimes. He comes back as a walker, only to be permanently taken down by Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs), who himself dies from a walker bite in season eight.

We’re still a full four months out from the premiere of The Walking Dead season 9 and already, much digital ink has been spilled regarding Rick’s impending departure.
Andrew Lincoln’s world-weary leader is scheduled to appear in just six episodes of the show’s ninth season, before he hands over the torch to Norman Reedus, whose Daryl Dixon is expected to take point as The Walking Dead‘s new leading man for 2019 and beyond.
But based on early reports, it looks certain that AMC and incoming showrunner Angela Kang are prepared to give Rick Grimes the send-off he deserves, beginning with a cameo (flashback?) involving Shane Walsh – that’s right, Jon Bernthal’s volatile supporting character is headed back to the land of the walkers – and more airtime for Richonne. The zombie-killing duo has been together since season 6, though according to Skybound’s Johnny O’Dell (h/t ComicBook.

Get ready to see an older Rick Grimes when The Walking Dead returns for Season 9 this fall: AMC’s zombie thriller will feature a time jump next season, according to new showrunner Angela Kang.
“We’re playing with time in the season, so we get to jump forward in the story,” Kang said at a “Kick-Ass Women of AMC” panel on Wednesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. (A time jump would match the story in the original Walking Dead comics, which jumped forward two years after the Rick-versus-Negan “All-Out War” that concluded Season 8.)

Shane Walsh will be resurrected for one episode of The Walking Dead season 9.
That’s the story that almost brought the Internet to a standstill yesterday afternoon, when it was revealed that Jon Bernthal, star of Baby Driver and Marvel’s TV rendition of The Punisher, had agreed to reprise his role as the volatile Shane for AMC’s hit drama.
Details of his surprise return are naturally being kept under lock and key – chances are it involves some pre-apocalypse flashback to Rick and Shane’s friendship – though we’re now learning that Jon Bernthal himself will be present at The Walking Dead‘s Sdcc panel next month, where his role in season 9 will be announced to the world. This appearance has also prompted rumors of an Sdcc showcase for The Punisher season 2, but we’ll file that one in the rumor cabinet for now…

The Walking Dead's Jon Bernthal Isn't Alone: When TV Stars Return Home to Help a Co-Star Say Goodbye
Rick Grimes is getting a blast from the past before he (presumably) goes into that good night. Weeks after it was reported that Andrew Lincoln would be departing The Walking Dead after appearing in only a handful of episodes of the upcoming ninth season, one of his former co-stars has been spotted in the vicinity of the AMC hit's Georgia sets. After a photo of Lincoln and co-star Norman Reedus posing with fans hit the internet, revealing they were in the company of former Twd star Jon Bernthal, several outlets have reported that the actor will reprise the role of Shane Walsh for one episode in season nine. Given that Shane was killed off at the end of season two, with Bernthal only returning once in season three as a...

Jon Bernthal is returning to “The Walking Dead,” TV Line reported Monday.
Over the weekend, photos surfaced online of the “Punisher” star on set in Senoia, Georgia, with Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus. It’s not unprecedented for previous cast members to hang out on set, but it looks like Bernthal was visiting for more than a lunch date.
According to the TV Line report, Bernthal will be reprising his role as Shane Walsh for one episode in Season 9. AMC declined to comment when reached by TheWrap.

With The Walking Dead losing two key players in the upcoming ninth season, the show is bringing one dearly departed character back.
Per TV Line, Jon Bernthal is staging a comeback to the AMC hit as Shane Walsh. Now, you may be scratching your head thinking, "that dude's totally dead."
There's no confirmation as of yet what brings Shane back into the fold, but the consensus is that he'll appear in flashbacks.
The rumor mill kicked into high gear over the weekend when a fan shared a picture from inside a store.

There are big, big changes coming to The Walking Dead season 9.
Amid news that Lauren Cohan and Andrew Lincoln – Maggie Rhee and Rick Grimes, respectively – are preparing to depart AMC’s flagship zombie series, thereby leaving the door open for Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) to assume leading man duties, we’re now hearing that Jon Bernthal has inked a deal to reprise as Shane Walsh for The Walking Dead season 9.
TVLine has the scoop, confirming that Bernthal, whose career has included everything from The Punisher to The Wolf of Wall Street since his initial Walking Dead stint, will appear in just one episode of the show’s ninth season. That tells us his surprise return will take the form of a hallucination – not unlike Rick’s vision of his former best friend during season 3 – or some pre-apocalypse flashback to help ease the transition from Andrew Lincoln to Norman Reedus.

The people of Alexandria bore witness to some truly horrific events throughout the first half of The Walking Dead season 8, and according to Lauren Cohan, things will only get worse before they get better.
Set to reprise the role of Maggie on February 25th, Cohan’s grief-stricken protagonist has been running on revenge ever since Negan murdered Glenn before her very eyes. It’s that ruthless act that continues to haunt Maggie, as evidenced by her decision to murder a Savior in cold blood and ship his lifeless body back to Negan – but not before she included a note (threat?) directed at Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s baddie.
It was a brutal and indeed shocking twist for a character who has so often been portrayed as a mild-mannered hero. But as Cohan tells Entertainment Weekly, Maggie has since been placed on a “path of vengeance.”
