The new film, which hits theaters Dec. 20, will tell the backstory of Simba’s father, Mufasa, an orphan who grew up to be a wise, powerful and compassionate ruler.
The official logline is as follows: “Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick.

John Boyega wants to discuss the good book with you. Which book am I talking about? The Book of Eli, of course! Whispers around the watercooler imply that Boyega is prepping a prequel series based on 2010’s The Book of Eli. According to Deadline, Boyega will play a younger version of Eli, the character played by Denzel Washington in the Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes-directed film. Adding authenticity to the project is The Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta, who will create/write/executive produce the upcoming prequel series. In The Book of Eli, a drifter fights across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation. The story takes place 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe resulting in an ecocide.

Cindy Bruna opened the show in a custom Viktor&Rolf dress with the message “Worth It” emblazoned. Kendall closed the show in a custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin dress, featuring over 150,000 Swarovski Crystals.

This Castlevania review contains spoilers.
When Netflix’s Castlevania animated series first released in 2017, it was nothing short of a miracle: at last fans had a video game adaptation that was not only worthy of its beloved source material but was also a hell of a lot of fun to watch in its own right, especially in its early, Dracula-focused seasons. Netflix got the formula very right back then and its sequel, Castlevania: Nocturne, largely nails it too, even if its 8-episode first season sometimes drags in the middle.
Set in 1792, about 300 years after the adventures of Trevor Belmont, the events of Nocturne unfold during the chaos of the French Revolution, a very suitable backdrop for all the gruesome violence that ensues at the crack of a Belmont whip. Returning directors Sam and Adam Deats go for broke with action sequences that extract every last ounce of blood, guts,...

Jonathan Majors is making sure to keep his body in shape.
The actor has created quite a stir for his physique in “Creed III,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and the Sundance Film Festival favorite “Magazine Dreams.” Majors tells Variety that he’ll work out not once, but twice before the Oscars on Sunday.
“I’m going to get up and go to the gym, have a big breakfast, wash my face and then I’ll really scrub my face because I’ll be presenting tomorrow,” Majors said at the Chanel and Charles Finch pre-Oscar dinner at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday night. “I’ll probably go to the gym twice. My pickup isn’t until four o’clock. It’ll be cool.”
His pre-Oscars breakfast? “I’m staying at this hotel with a really great steak so probably a wagyu steak. Protein is good.

We're beginning to sound like a broken record, but the Oscars still can't figure out how to reward Black talent. On Jan. 24, the Academy announced the 2023 nominations, which included plenty of first-time honorees, history-makers, and overdue accolades. However, the most glaring flaw among the nominee list was the complete shut out of women directors (specifically Black women) and Black actors in lead categories - which continues to be a repeat offense from the Academy. Remember #OscarsSoWhite?
Every year, film enthusiasts hold their breath to see if the Oscars will put together a nominee pool that isn't solely made up of all-male, all-white, or otherwise non-inclusive contenders, but the sad reality is that this time of year always brings some disappointment. There is reason to celebrate: the 2023 Oscar nominations proved to be a great year for Asian American actors, per "Everything Everywhere All at Once"'s 11 nods and Hong Chau's...

TriStar Pictures film “The Woman King” has been given official permission to release in cinemas in mainland China. It is expected to debut on April 14.
The Viola Davis-starring fantasy action film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September last year and went into U.S. and international commercial release shortly after.
The film has grossed $97.2 million worldwide, with $29.9 million coming from international markets and $67.3 million in North America.
While the China release is significantly later than the rest of the world, potentially opening the film to online piracy, the launch date was communicated by Chinese authorities with some five weeks of advanced notice. That is more than many Hollywood films have received in China and gives the local marketing teams a reasonable chance to promote the film’s theatrical launch.

Sitting front row during Dior’s autumn-winter 2023 women’s ready-to-wear collection unveiled in Paris today were house ambassadors Charlize Theron and Blackpink’s Jisoo, joined by names including Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Gal Gadot, Thuso Mbedu, Maisie Williams, Alexandra Daddario, The Last of Us’ Bella Ramsey, Elle Macpherson and actress Heart Evangelista.
Theron wowed in a beaded, flapper-style cream silk dress worn with a long black coat and Dior’s Urban-d combat boots, while Jisoo shined in a vibrant purple Dior dress.
Titled Valkyrie Miss Dior, the show was a nod to house founder Christian Dior’s sister Catherine Dior, who was a hero of the French resistance to Nazi occupation in World War II and, later in life, a florist and flower farmer.
The second-most fascinating thing about the collection was the set design of massive floral textile structures throughout the runway space.

Netflix recently put The Woman King on its streaming service after a successful theatrical run, which recently culminated in a number of film awards nominations. For many Netflix viewers, this will be the first time they’ve ever interacted in any way with Western African history. While some experts on the topic have argued that the film oversimplifies historical events, it is important that the popularity of The Woman King allows future films about African history to be made by native filmmakers and those of the wider African diaspora.
The story of Namisca (Viola Davis) leading the Agojie, a real-life army of women warriors, who protected King Gezo of Dahomey (John Boyega) is indeed based on history, but the backstory of the conflict with the Oyo Empire and the slave trade represented by Oba (Jimmy Odukoya) is much more complicated. While the Dahomey Empire was indeed paying tributes to the larger Oyo Empire,...

Eight years into the existence of their Best Film Stunt Ensemble category, the Screen Actors Guild bestowed the award upon a female-directed movie for the first time. This historic moment involved Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” (2015) which has since been emulated by Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” (2018) and “Wonder Woman 1984” (2021). Now, following the losses of Cate Shortland’s “Black Widow” and Lana Wachowski’s “The Matrix Resurrections” last year, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King” has a strong shot at becoming the fourth addition to the list.
Set in 1820s West Africa, “The Woman King” tells the partially fact-based story of the Agojie, an all-female warrior group fiercely dedicated to defending the kingdom of Dahomey. The plot progresses through the perspectives of General Nanisca (Viola Davis), who has accumulated more than two decades of fighting experience, and new recruit Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), whose participation in this noble cause helps her unlock the secrets of her past.

While the historical action film “The Woman King” is Thuso Mbedu’s first feature film, it’s been a long time coming. The “Underground Railroad” actress has overcome a number of challenges in her life so far, and said she’s been “living on survival mode” for most of the time.
“The first challenge that I had to overcome was growing up in South Africa. I was raised by my grandmother, I lost my mother to a brain tumor at the age of four,” Mbedu said in an emotional installment of TheWrap’s How She Did It, presented by Johnnie Walker. “In high school, I had my best friend bring me lunch because sometimes we didn’t have food.”
Mdbeu found comfort in drama when she entered college, which spurred her interest in pursuing acting full-time for two reasons.

“Here we go again.” That’s what I thought to myself as it slowly but surely became evident that, once again, the BAFTAs were going to end with every single winner being white. Cue the exasperated sighs.
In the wake of the first trending #BAFTAsSoWhite hashtag eight years ago, BAFTA made a pledge to review its nominations process. And even as recently as 2020, BAFTA chairman Krishnendu Majumdar committed to producing “meaningful and sustainable progress” to move towards a more inclusive and diverse awards and wider industry. A groundbreaking diversity review made a sweeping number of changes that have inserted jury involvement across the performance and directing categories to ensure a diverse group of nominees. But on Sunday night, the results spoke for themselves.
Let’s get this out of the way: no one is saying someone should win solely because of their race, and we’re not here to argue...
