Will Sharpe, who starred opposite Aubrey Plaza on Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” will direct the film adaptation of “Crying in H Mart,” the best-selling (and heartbreaking) memoir from Michelle Zauner, better known as indie rocker Japanese Breakfast.
As announced by the studio, Sharpe will take on the coming-of-age story about a half-Korean daughter who returns to small-town Oregon to care for her Korean mother. The project, which was first announced back in 2021 with Zauner herself writing the screenplay, is set at MGM’s Orion Pictures and is now moving forward under Amazon’s supervision. Amazon finalized its acquisition of MGM for $8.5 billion last spring, and the studio has been ramping back up with its recent hire of new film chief Courtenay Valenti.

Will Sharpe — the actor and filmmaker who was most recently seen in the latest season of The White Lotus — has been tapped to direct the adaptation of the bestselling memoir Crying in H Mart.
In 2021, MGM’s Orion Pictures picked up the rights to Michelle Zauner’s memoir, with Stacey Sher and Jason Kim on board to produce.
Zauner will pen the script adapting her book that tracks her years growing up as one of the few Asian American kids at her school in Oregon and the months spent at her grandmother’s apartment in Seoul, as well as her career in the East Coast indie music scene and meeting her husband. At the center of her story is Zauner’s relationship with her mother, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer, at which point Zauner reckons with her identity both as a daughter and a Korean American.

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, Lola Tung takes our call.
Lola Tung wants to set things straight - she's not Team Jeremiah, Conrad, or Cam. "I'm Team Belly," she tells Popsugar. "I think that is the only right answer. But I very much believe that she should follow her heart, and I believe in her going on her own journey and discovering that by herself."
Tung stars as Isabella "Belly" Conklin in "The Summer I Turned Pretty," the new series from Prime Video. Season one features seven episodes and covers book one of Jenny Han's Summer book trilogy. Another of Han's book series also inspired Netflix's hit "To All The Boys I Loved Before" film series.

Photo: ‘Crying in H Mart’ A Brief Overview Written by Michelle Zauner, also known as the lead singer of indie rock group, Japanese Breakfast -- ‘Crying in H Mart’ is a beautifully tragic memoir about a daughter who grieves her mother. Zauner journeys the readers as each line carries you through childhood memories and experiences with great detail. The novel centers around the importance of Korean dishes in her life, hence the ‘H Mart’ reference in the title. H Mart is a Korean grocery chain that sells Asian food (H stands for “han ah reum” which translates to “one arm full of groceries”). Whether or not you are familiar with Korean cuisine, her detail within each line helps familiarize readers about the range of flavors in each meal. This is what makes Zauner’s memoir so distinct as she takes you with her throughout her story. With such heartbreaking prose...

Japanese Breakfast delivered two songs off their acclaimed 2021 LP Jubilee as musical guest on the season finale episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Natasha Lyonne.
The band performed the first two songs off the LP, starting first with the hit opening track “Be Sweet” before returning later in the bittersweet episode — which saw farewells from longtime cast members Kate McKinnon and Pete Davidson — to play “Paprika.”
Zauner also made a quick cameo at the end of the “Women’s Commercial” sketch:

Saturday Night Live combined 9 to 5 with Weekend at Bernie’s tonight for one of Kyle Mooney’s final sketches.
Set as a spinoff to the beloved Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton classic, SNL‘s 9:15 to 5:10 followed what would have happened if three disgruntled women employees – played by Cecily Strong, Ego Nwodim and Heidi Gardner – actually killed their boss Mr. Dooley, played by first-time host Natasha Lyonne. After Gardner’s character, styled like Parton in the 1980 film, shoots the boss on sight, she and her accomplices decide to puppeteer the dead body for a shareholders meeting. Of course, they know that they’re dealing with a dead body after it fails to respond to their repeated tickling. Lyonne, on the other hand, hesitantly cracks a smile.
The shareholders, played by Mooney and SNL alum Fred Armisen, enter the room only to be met with a lifeless boss supported by his three employees.

In a sign that perhaps the departing “Saturday Night Live” stars are returning to their greatest hits as they head out the door, this week’s cold open featured a wild sendoff for at least two of them. For Kate McKinnon, that meant her fan favorite alien abductee Ms. Rafferty, who once again shared a wildly inappropriate experience with Nsa officers played by Aidy Bryant and Mikey Day.
After showcasing her experience, McKinnon as Ms. Rafferty headed off into space, after one last goodbye. This clearly doubled as a McKinnon goodbye as well. “I kind of felt like an alien on this planet anyway,” the character said. “Well Earth, I love you, thanks for letting me stay awhile. Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
The clip opened with Bryant and Day, and sustained applause — clearly directed at Bryant, who is also departing after this episode.

It’s the end of Season 47 of Saturday Night Live, which also means its time for the final promo of the half-year.
Host Natasha Lyonne and musical guest Japanese Breakfast are on this weekend’s SNL menu. But there was one thing for cast members Kenan Thompson and Kate McKinnon to grok: why does Lyonne’s voice sound like Peter Falk, aka fabled TV detective Columbo?
Watch the video and decide for yourself.
Japanese Breakfast is headed by director, author Michelle Zauner. The group’s album, Jubilee, was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album at this year’s Grammys.

In recent years, a handful of Asian American musicians have made a name for themselves in the American music scene. There's indie rock artist Mitski, Michelle Zauner of the genre-defying band Japanese Breakfast, and house DJ and producer Yaeji. The list grows a bit longer if we count Grammy-winning mainstream artists like H.E.R., Olivia Rodrigo, Bruno Mars, and Anderson .Paak, all of whom have some Asian heritage. However, they're the notable exceptions in an industry in which Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (Aapi) are still grossly underrepresented and underpromoted, despite the wealth of musical talent that exists within the community.
In contrast, many K-pop stars - the majority of whom hail from South Korea - are now more successful and famous in the US than most Aapi artists. This striking paradox speaks to...

The “Crazy Rich Asians” cinematic universe is expanding. A new spin-off film, centered on fan favorite characters played by Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr., is reportedly in the works.
The yet-untitled Warner Bros. project will be written by Emmy-nominated “Barry” screenwriter and producer Jason Kim and will be in continuity with the upcoming “Crazy Rich Asians” sequel based on Kevin Kwan’s trilogy installment, “China Rich Girlfriend.”
The rom-com will follow Astrid Young Teo (Chan) who is the newly-single cousin of “Crazy Rich Asians” lead Nick Young, played by Henry Golding. The first film saw Astrid learn that her husband (Pierre Png) has been unfaithful; she reconnects with first love and former fiancé Charlie Wu (Shum Jr.) at Nick’s engagement party. As Deadline reported, the Kwan novels include that Astrid’s parents broke up her engagement to Charlie as he was not a “suitable husband” due to their socioeconomic differences.

Exclusive: Emmy nominated Barry producer and scribe Jason Kim is set to pen a spinoff of Crazy Rich Asians which will center around the Gemma Chan character of Astrid Young Teo and her romance with Charlie Wu, played by Harry Shum Jr. in the original movie.
I hear that Kim came in with a dynamite pitch for the lovebirds’ story, and Warner Bros. swooned for it. The project is in early development.

BTS sent the temperature skyrocketing with their buttery smooth red carpet entrance at the Grammys on Sunday. Showcasing their individual style, V, Suga, Jin, Jungkook, Rm, Jimin, and J-Hope rolled up in coordinated Louis Vuitton looks in shades of blue, white, and brown. As seasoned Grammys veterans and the K-pop kings of hand gestures, BTS knew exactly what to do when the Glambot, the award show's slow-motion style camera, came swinging in their direction.
As soon as it came their way, half the band brought their hands to their ears, while the others crouched and posed like a set of movie spies frozen in an iconic action scene. What sometimes requires celebrities multiple takes only took BTS a moment, but we're not surprised considering they have badass dance skills and an overall swag that makes us melt like butter every time they hit the red carpet. "Before we fight, I call dibs on Rm.

Michelle Zauner is best known as the frontwoman behind the indie-pop band Japanese Breakfast. The musician rose to fame after the release of her 2016 album "Psychopomp" and has since become a beloved figure in the indie music world.
