John Wayne! Janet Leigh! Nifty jet-age flying sequences! Goofy, bad-taste sex jokes! Hans Conreid as a chortling Russian army officer! Howard Hughes’ personal fun project took seven years to make while he played games with the aerial footage. It’s a highly-polished absurd joke, but it’s certainly entertaining. See Hughes try to do for Janet Leigh what he did for Jane Russell — I assume Ms. Leigh was too shrewd to sign any long-term contracts! This German disc has excellent widescreen image and audio.

Take one fiercely individual auteur fed up with the Hollywood game, put him in Kyoto with a full Japanese film company, and the result is a picture critics have been trying to figure out ever since. It’s a realistic story told in a highly artificial visual style, in un-subtitled Japanese. And its writer-director intended it to play for American audiences.

One of the most unusual, and unusually moving swansongs in cinema history, Josef Von Sternberg’s Anatahan (a.k.a. The Saga of Anatahan) returns to American screens this spring in a new restoration which seems destined not to only buff up the movie’s obvious visual splendor but also its standing as an essential and fully engaged work of a master Hollywood stylist rather than simply a curious end post to a remarkable career.
In the early ‘50s Sternberg was coming off two movies made for Howard Hughes—the gorgeously sublimated cold-war adventure Jet Pilot (finished in 1950 but cut extensively by Hughes and held up for release until 1957) and Macao (1952), on which Sternberg and Hughes clashed again, resulting in the director’s replacement by Nicholas Ray. Sam Fuller's superior western classic stars Rod Steiger, Brian Keith, Charles Bronson and Sarita Montiel, and takes on a tall stack of potent issues. A Reb sharpshooter denies the South's defeat, and goes west to join the Sioux nation where he can continue his war against the Yankees. This spin on 'The Man Without a Country' is one of Fuller's best thanks to a generous budget, unflinching action violence and committed performances. Before Thanksgiving, before Thankskilling, before Q: The Winged Serpent there was The Giant Claw.
What’s The Giant Claw you ask? Oh, just a little film from the late ‘50s about a mutant killer bird that terrorizes the world. Technically, it may not be a turkey. But it looks A Lot like an oversized evil flying turkey made from clay and wires. The bird was reportedly created by puppeteers and filmed after all the live-action with humans had been filmed. When you watch the movie you can see that is absolutely the case.
The plot goes something like this: Jet pilot Mitch and his nerdy girlfriend Sally struggle to find a way to defeat the oversized feathery fiend that, thanks to its natural anti-matter shield, can’t be killed with your average h-bomb. Turns out, all it takes is the empire state building and a meson emitter.

Two weeks ago, it was announced that Cabin in the Woods, the horror flick produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, would finally get a release date after years of sitting on the shelf. It's set for April 2012. Then yesterday, in even more surprising news, a release date was miraculously set for Margaret, Kenneth Lonergan's long-delayed follow-up to You Can Count on Me. That film, which stars Matt Damon and Anna Paquin, has been delayed now for six years, mostly because Lonergan couldn't finish the edit, which led to a lot of squabbles with the studio. Those two movies -- along with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which also recently received a release date -- were among the list of the Six Highly Anticipated Films You May Never Get to See, which we ran back in May.
However, long delays have rarely been kind to a film's box-office prospects, and if history is any indication,...

It doesn't quite happen as much as it did a few years back, but there was this trend for a while where one studio would have an idea for a movie and start moving forward with it... and then another studio would hear about it, also think it was a good idea and start making a very similar movie. They'd even often come out right around the exact same time.
The website Topmoviez also recognized this little trend and put together a list of similar films that all came out at the same time. Their list looked like this:
Volcano Movies: “Dante’s Peak” (February 7, 1997) and “Volcano” (April 25, 1997)
Asteroid Threatening Earth Movies: “Deep Impact” (May 8, 1998) and “Armageddon” (July 1, 1998)
18 Year Old Daughters of the President Movies: “Chasing Liberty” (January 9, 2004) and “First Daughter” (September 24, 2004)
European Period Movies About Magicians: “The Illusionist” (September 1, 2006) and “The Prestige” (October 20, 2006)

Actress Janet Leigh, whose ill-fated shower in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho became one of the most frightening moments in cinema, died Sunday at her home in Beverly Hills; she was 77. According to a spokeswoman for Leigh's daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Leigh "died peacefully" at her home on Sunday afternoon, and had been battling vasculitis, an inflammation of the blood vessels, for the past year. A California native, Leigh (birth name Jeannette Helen Morrison) was reportedly discovered by actress Norma Shearer, who saw a photo of a young girl on the desk of Leigh's father and asked if she could borrow it. A screen test for MGM followed, and Leigh was cast in 1947's The Romance of Rosy Ridge. A number of ingénue rolls followed, most notably Little Women, Angels in the Outfield, and The Naked Spur. In 1951, Leigh married the equally photogenic Tony Curtis, and their romance and marriage was press fodder for years, even as they appeared in less-than-memorable films together, including Houdini, The Perfect Furlough, and The Vikings; the two divorced in 1962 after having two daughters, Kelly and Jamie Lee. Leigh's roles improved with her age, and she graduated from maidens in costume dramas to more contemporary heroines, and throughout the 50s she starred in My Sister Eileen, Pete Kelly's Blues, and Jet Pilot, among other films.
Leigh had one of her most memorable roles as Charlton Heston's abducted wife in Orson Welles' 1958 noir classic Touch of Evil, but just two years later she made film history by playing the doomed heroine Marion Crane in Psycho. Her brief but memorable turn in the Hitchcock film, punctuated by the classic shower scene in which the actress was slashed to death by Anthony Perkins, earned Leigh a Golden Globe and her only Academy Award nomination. Though she also appeared opposite Frank Sinatra in the now-classic The Manchurian Candidate, Leigh's Psycho turn overshadowed the rest of her career, a fact that she happily embraced, writing a book about the film's making, Psycho: Behind the Scenes in the Classic Thriller, in 1995. Leigh worked sporadically through the 70s, and appeared with daughter Jamie Lee in 1980's The Fog, but went into semi-retirement in the 80s and 90s; she appeared again with her daughter in the 1998 sequel Halloween: H20. Leigh is survived by her fourth husband, Robert Brandt, and daughters Jamie Lee Curtis and Kelly Curtis. --Prepared by IMDb staff...
