In the early 2000s, Disney had a knack for making sequels to their beloved animated classics, which were often a notable step down from the original, in both the writing and animation department. But we can look past these subpar sequels, as they were meant for DVD/Video release, thus it didn’t leave a lasting impact on the legacy of the classics.
However, Disney’s trend of remaking acclaimed classics is a whole new low, as not only are they often a step down in quality, but also close the gates for the new generation to experience the originals. Moreover, several things that made the animated releases special often don’t translate well into live-action, with The Lion King being the most infamous example. And fans are once again riled up against Disney’s upcoming Mufasa flick.

Lilo & Stitch is getting the live-action treatment at Disney, and it will be released much sooner than fans think. The original 2002 Lilo & Stitch was a unique project for Disney because it wasn’t based on any previous material like its other animated movies. Still, nonetheless, it proved to be more successful than they had planned, birthing two movies, three animated television series, and the upcoming live-action remake. This upcoming remake is another film to join the slate of Disney live-action remakes like Beauty and The Beast, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Mulan, and Peter Pan and Wendy.

Cody Rhodes has one of the most intriguing WWE storylines, one that has had fans captivated ever since its debut. However, despite the twists and turns that plague the story, fans have found a very unusual connection between the story that Rhodes is playing out and the storyline of Dinsey’s most popular animated story.
Cody Rhodes
Fans have equated the beats of the storyline that Rhodes has been following with Lion King, the seminal Disney classic that adapted William Shakespeare’s Hamlet for its young audience. The plot beats and the characters have been mapped out by audiences in a fun instance of comparative storytelling, something that has taken X by storm in the wake of this realization.

C.S. Lewis’ Narnia books and The Beatles’ songs are two of post-war England’s most valuable cultural exports. Paul McCartney said one of The Beatles’ songs is about a place that John Lennon felt was similar to Narnia. John did an incredible job of translating his feelings into music.

Disney has been in the headlines already in 2024 with the copyright for their first Mickey Mouse cartoon, Steamboat Willie, falling into the public domain. The studio powerhouse had a pretty flat 2023 as just about every big release from them underperformed at the box office. They are hoping to shake that off and hit 2024 running. What can we expect from the House Of Mouse this year? Let’s take a look at the Disney 2024 release schedule.

The original Candy Man, Willy Wonka, comes to theaters right before Christmas, bringing scrumdiddlyumptious sweets, jaunty tunes, and cheer to the holiday season! Early tracking for the Paul King-directed origin story is here, with the Quorum predicting a $20M-$23M opening. This estimate is early, and predictions for Wonka‘s pre-Christmas box office launch could increase the closer we get to showtime.
Promotion for Wonka is doing an admirable job of getting the film in front of potential audience members, with two trailers, a GQ cover story, and a guest spot for Timothée Chalamet (Willy Wonka) scheduled for November 11, 2023. The trailers enticed 31M and 9M viewers, respectively, with audiences eager to meet Chalamet’s young chocolatier and Hugh Grant’s wise-cracking Oompa-Loompa.

There aren't a lot of directors around these days who can draw crowds into theaters simply through their personal brand and reputation (even the great Steven Spielberg is struggling), but Christopher Nolan is one of the rare few. With "Oppenheimer," his taut, tension-filled biographical thriller about the "father of the atomic bomb," Nolan was competing with himself in the sub-genre of movies set during World War II. His 2017 war film "Dunkirk," which depicted the evacuation of Allied soldiers from a beach surrounded by German forces, became the second-highest grossing war film of all time with its $527 million total (just behind "American Sniper," which grossed $547.4 million).
Now, Nolan has surpassed Nolan with a story set a couple of years after "Dunkirk" and on the other side of the Atlantic. "Oppenheimer" passed the half-billion mark after just three weekends at the box office, grossed $552.9 million by the end of Sunday. According to Variety,...

No one would make a better choice to helm the soundtrack to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse than Metro Boomin, the trap whiz with albums like Not All Heroes Wear Capes and Heroes & Villains in his discography. Part of a recent renaissance for blockbuster soundtracks (Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé respectively curated the music for Black Panther and The Lion King of late), this latest lends new meaning to the term “spider verse,” with plenty of web-slinging bars from Offset, A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage, Future and an equally superpowered cast of melodic rappers of the moment.

When it was released in 1989, Disney’s The Little Mermaid was a creative breath of fresh air for an animation studio thought to be well beyond its glory days. The bouncy, colorful fairy tale, fueled by instant-classic songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, kick-started a renaissance for Disney animation, taking it beyond the drab days of The Rescuers and Oliver & Company and into an era that included Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King.
But like those three classics – each one rightfully considered a gem in the Mouse House’s crown – The Little Mermaid has now long been milked for all possible profit through theatrical re-releases, home video sales and sequels, amusement park rides, and Broadway musicals. It now receives Disney’s last squeeze: a creatively inferior, bloated live-action remake that trades the energy of animation for cinematic karaoke.

This weekend sees the latest release in Disney’s “let’s just remake all of our old films but with real people and make a billion dollars each time” line of films with the live action update to 1989’s Oscar winning The Little Mermaid. And if the tracking for this one is any indication, Disney will have another billion dollar grosser on its hands as The Little Mermaid is expected to open anywhere between $100-$120 million, with a range like that I always like to split the difference and call it at $110 million for the 3-day take while the 4-day Memorial Day haul will be closer to that $120 million. That opening will put it less than both The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast live action openings but above the $91.5 million opening of 2019’s Aladdin which went on to do $1.054 billion worldwide.

Movie pulling out the win with an estimated $40 million, marking the best fourth weekend ever for an animated film and officially becoming the second highest grossing animated film ever at the domestic box office officially passing the $486.2 made by Finding Dory. Technically, that was a fully CGI made film, which would put Super Mario Bros in third place as that version of The Lion King took in $543.6 million.

James Corden's time as a late-night host has officially come to an end. And what better way to bid farewell to "The Late Late Show" than to call upon his buddy Tom Cruise, don a meerkat costume, and join in on a Broadway performance of "The Lion King"? Yes, really.
The concept of James Corden and Tom Cruise crashing a Broadway show might sound insane, but just take a moment to truly process those words. In a way, this was the inevitable conclusion of Corden's late-night reign.
Since taking over "The Late Late Show" in 2015, Corden has been finding new (and increasingly strange) ways to combine his love of theater with the star-studded nature of his talk show. This has led to performance-heavy recurring segments like "Carpool Karaoke," "Drop The Mic" and "Riff-Off." When the opportunity arises, Corden's love of Broadway takes centerstage, so it only makes sense for...

It’s the end of an era on CBS, as James Corden said his last goodbye to the Late Late Show on Thursday, April 27, which included a star-studded line-up of special guests. The finale was preceded by a Carpool Karaoke special, which featured the late-night host and Tom Cruise performing songs from The Lion King at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles. After previously taking part in high-octane activities like skydiving and flying a fighter jet, Corden invited Cruise to “enter my world.” Joining the Lion King cast on stage, Corden and Cruise performed renditions of “The Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata” while dressed as Timon (Corden) and Pumbaa (Cruise). The special also saw Corden taking part in one final Carpool Karaoke segment with his good friend Adele. As the multi-time Grammy winner drove the host to Television City studio for the last time, they looked back at the success of the show.

We tried to warn you. We really did. Several times in the lead up to the premiere of Mrs. Davis, we tried to communicate that the Peacock sci-fi series was truly bonkers. But no one can fully be prepared for the experience of watching a nun combating an all-powerful artificial intelligence with a storytelling tone that star Betty Gilpin describes as “No Country for Old Looney Tunes.”
So now here we are. You’ve clicked on this headline wondering if you really understood that massive twist in Mrs. Davis‘s second episode. Let us assure you that yes, you absolutely did. The character known as Jay (Andy McQueen) is none other than The King of Kings, The Holy One of Israel, The Lion and The Lamb, The Only Begotten Son, The Messiah. Literally Jesus Christ of Nazareth is a character on this television program.

When people think of moments from Disney movies, they often focus on the sweeter examples. From Snow White dancing with Dopey to Jasmine and Aladdin discovering a whole new world, there's no shortage of adorable Disney scenes to choose from. Yet, as many Disney fans know, there's always been a darker side to the Mouse House's films. This comes through clearest in the studio's most frightening sequences, especially those that focus on the not-so-magical topic of death.
To some, the death of Bambi's mother remains a traumatic memory. For others, Mufasa's tragic demise in "The Lion King" left an inescapable mark on their youth. When people talk about the magic of cinema, they’re usually not referring to monologues. More often than not, it’s the awe-inspiring visuals and imaginary worlds brought to life that give the phrase “movie magic” the ring of truth. None of that would be possible without visual effects, an ever-evolving field that pushes filmmakers like James Cameron and Peter Jackson further and further in their quest to create that special spark.
The films that won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects this century represent the most innovative visual storytelling of the last two decades. Using motion capture technology, computer-generated imagery, miniatures, and giant puppets, these films create fantasy worlds and creatures beyond our wildest imaginations.

Several days ago, we were pleased to talk to Frank Grillo, star of Little Dixie. He told us about the movie, his career, his upcoming projects and… Charles Bronson!
A charming person we talked with, thank you, Mr Grillo!
My name is C. Sheriff, and you we’re going to talk about Little Dixie. And the first thing is we saw Little Dixie, and it’s a dark movie. It’s very special. And we would like to know, what do you think that Little Dixie has that makes it different from other thrillers you have participated in?
Frank Grillo: I’ve participated in a lot of thrillers. I don’t know that it’s entirely different, but we have a main character who really lacks a great deal of emotion. Not to say he’s emotionless, but he’s very pragmatic, and he’s very non-sentimental in the way...

As news emerges that Netflix is planning to reboot the Teletubbies this November, narrated by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s Tituss Burgess, there have been mixed reactions. Some are pleased to see this ’90s favourite of kids’ TV – which has attained cult status over the years – returning once again, while others still find the show too creepy and psychedelic.
Regardless of how you feel about this children’s TV classic, the Teletubbies have certainly provided us with some weird moments over the years. Let’s activate our antennae and take a look at our tummy screens as we relive these surreal Teletubbies appearances “again, again!”

The Disney Renaissance was a time of great experimentation for the Mouse House — one that saw its animation division tackling all sorts of challenging material, from ancient legends spanning cultures around the world to decidedly dark and mature literary classics by Victor Hugo and Edgar Rice Burroughs. But with great daring comes the risk of committing equal-sized blunders, and that's just what the studio did when it decided to turn the tale of the real-life Indigenous American woman Pocahontas (a nickname passed down by her father) into an animated musical extravaganza.
That's not just the hindsight talking. "Pocahontas" earned a lackluster critical reception upon its theatrical release in 1995, with reviews arguing it was stunningly animated but otherwise lacking in personality. The film's reputation has only worsened over the decades thanks to its soft-peddling of the violence perpetuated by European colonialism, along with its rehashing of Indigenous American stereotypes. Adding insult to injury,...

A few months ago, we brought you the news that Jamie Foxx was reportedly on Marvel’s wish list for the studio’s X-Men reboot, with the 52 year-old being eyed to play Bishop. A fan favorite character, the mutant was never given a fair shake of the stick on the big screen, having been briefly glimpsed in Days of Future Past portrayed by Omar Sy, who didn’t have a whole lot to do in the film.
Yesterday’s announcement that Foxx would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe looked to have ruled him out of the running for the X-Men role, but we’ve now heard from our sources – the same ones that initially told us Disney were developing sequels to Aladdin and The Lion King before either was confirmed – that the actor’s impending return hasn’t definitively ended his chances of suiting up as a mutant.

As the live-action remake of the highest-grossing 2D animation in history, bumper box office business was expected of The Lion King when it hit theaters last year. Jon Favreau’s retread certainly didn’t disappoint on that front, either, raking in over $1.6 billion globally to becoming the seventh biggest film of all-time.
The movie was a painstakingly faithful adaptation of the 1994 original, for better or worse. The Lion King was stunning to look at, no doubt, but the characters, plot, dialogue, score and songs had all been seen before and done much better, giving the end product a hollow feel. As a technical achievement it was incredible, but from a storytelling perspective, it left a lot to be desired.
A sequel was officially confirmed yesterday, with Moonlight‘s Barry Jenkins stepping in to replace Favreau, who will presumably be busy in a galaxy far, far away for the foreseeable future.

It’s been established already that Disney now runs the world. And as our new overlord, the Mouse House controls everything, especially when it comes to the studio’s work. We just have to deal with it. And sadly, for an elementary school, they had to learn about the new state of the world the hard way, after receiving a fine for playing “The Lion King” at a local fundraising event.

A version of this story about “Frozen II” first appeared in the Oscar Nominations Preview issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
As the sequel to the highest-grossing animated film of all time (if you don’t count the recent CG “live-action” version of “The Lion King”), “Frozen II” faced a big challenge from the start. And that was even before co-director Jennifer Lee got a promotion in her day job to become the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios and before the film changed in ever more complicated directions.
“The story kept evolving, and each time it made the movie more complex,” said producer Peter Del Vecho, who won an Oscar for the original 2013 “Frozen” alongside directors Lee and Chris Buck. “On the whole, it’s probably one of the more complex movies we’ve ever made.”

This season’s VFX Oscar race features bold, innovative animation, led by Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King,” the all-cg photoreal breakthrough by Mpc Film,; Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man,” which boasts Weta Digital’s most fully convincing digital human with Junior, the younger clone of Will Smith’s aging assassin, and Industrial Light & Magic’s innovative de-aging of Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci without markers or animation in Martin Scorsese’s Best Picture contender, “The Irishman.”
Additionally, Weta took facial capture to the next level with “Alita: Battle Angel,” the manga-inspired sci-fi adventure directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau. The doll-like cyborg with big eyes (performance-captured by Rosa Salazar) looked very convincing and badass.
But “The Lion King” blockbuster’s tactile photo-realism will be the one to beat, crossing the line between live action and animation with its stunning illusion of reality.
