In 2019, the documentary of 80s horror In Search of Darkness became an instant hit with horror fans. Now, a beautiful coffee table style companion book is available and is a must-own for all fans of one of horror’s greatest eras. The book is a walk down the horror aisle of the best mom and pop video store in the heyday of VHS, featuring full color photos, poster art, insightful essays and more. More than just a nostalgic throwback, In Search of Darkness is the kind of book I wish I’d had back in my years as a burgeoning horror fan but is also satisfying for the film fanatic I have become in the years since.
The format is beautifully and simply laid out, with at least a dozen (usually more) movies from each year of the decade presented in order of release accompanied by informative and insightful essays...

All You Can Eat opens with a shot of the sign for Planet Burrito, a Taco Bell type Mexican restaurant whose mascot is a three-eyed alien with a taste for human limbs that looks as if it was designed by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. It’s a fitting image as writer/director Kieran Reed delivers a thirteen-minute trip down horror’s memory lane with an emphasis on the films of the 80s.
Nola, one of the restaurant’s staff is telling her coworker Gurdip (Matt O’Toole) about an odd occurrence she had as she waited for the restaurant’s owner Kip Meatsock (Andy Muskett) to finish whatever he was doing with some Petri dishes.

One of the great things about horror is the variety, which can go hand and hand with longevity; as fans we never get tired of the genre because there are so many rabbit holes to dive down, to drown in weird worlds of ghosts, dismemberment, and monsters. And even when a sub-genre isn’t in fashion, it’s nice to see a touch of the old in the current; case in point: The Being (1983), writer/director Jackie Kong’s (Blood Diner) feature debut and a breezy update of ‘50s sci-fi shenanigans.
Released by Best Film & Video in November, The Being was originally shot in 1980 under the title Easter Sunday; no takers were to be found until ‘83. The film did not light up the box office, nor did it receive any lofty notices. It did, however, signal the arrival of a fun new voice on the horror scene in the guise of Kong.

Rob Zombie has released a new song, “The Triumph of King Freak (A Crypt of Preservation and Superstition),” from his upcoming seventh studio album, The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy, out March 12th, 2021 via Nuclear Blast.
The track is a ferocious blast of big guitar metal, although halfway through Zombie deftly injects a tasteful bit of rap-rock as a searing solo gives way to a record-scratching breakdown. “King freak drinking blood in the arena,” Zombie growls, “King Freak taste the vectors of disease/King Freak destroy you while you’re on your knees.

Above: Ticket of No Return. Courtesy of Arsenal.Ulrike Ottinger’s Ticket of No Return (1979) opens on one of the last locations I laid eyes on before the sudden, pandemic-fueled termination of transatlantic travel: Berlin’s Tegel airport, its brutalist baggage claim mostly unchanged between the era of the film’s production and this February’s Berlinale. There, Ottinger was awarded the prestigious Berlinale Camera, recognizing her formative position in New German Cinema, a celebration overdue after years of her work being overlooked while more attention was lavished on her male counterparts. Ticket of No Return follows a sloppy socialite who lands in the city to imbibe till the point of demise, a desire that felt unfortunately familiar through the darkest months of the spring’s lockdown. Now, even as we tentatively re-emerge into an opening world, Ottinger’s filmography—the subject of a retrospective via Metrograph’s online platform...

Let me see your heart!
Let me break something down real quick. I justifiably catch a reputation as being someone who likes to like things. And that’s true. Whenever I have time to share movie talk with folks, I want to talk about the things I love. Because, for me, it’s just too darn easy to fall down a rabbit hole of negativity. When I stumble across something that thrills me, I want to share it. Even still, sometimes I’m a bit abashed when it comes to how enthusiastic I tend to be about things. This is especially true when I find a great new-to-me trash-cinema film. Over Easter Weekend, I got stuck on a “Blood” film kick. Don’t judge me. I like topical themes. Any road, that’s when I ran into Blood Diner. I had no idea this movie existed until I saw the poster flipping through movies on Shudder. When...

Director Jackie Kong, whose low-budget horror flicks Blood Diner and The Being have become cult favorites among fans of '80s horror, has stepped behind the camera once again for the romantic horror feature CoExistence – which also marks the screen reunion of Blade Runner stars Rutger Hauer and Daryl Hannah. Kong dropped off the horror map for many years to work as an activist for the non-profit group Asian-American Media Development (Aamd), but has finally returned to filmmaking with this vampiric twist on Romeo & Juliet set in California's Sonoma wine country. The modern-day retelling involves a bitter rivalry between two wine-making clans intensified by a forbidden love affair between teens from both families (played by Nick Krause & Bella Thorne), which also threatens to expose a shocking family secret. Despite the teen/vampire romance element, Kong is quick to downplay comparisons to the Twilight franchise. “I’m not just catering to teenagers,...

The director of '80s horror Blood Diner and The Being finally unmasks and returns with a new film project.
For those of you unfamiliar with the career of the mysterious Jackie Kong, read our retrospective.
For all the rest of you, you know that Kong has never had an Internet presence, nor has allowed pictures of herself to surface anywhere online. Now, finally, Kong has resurfaced with a detailed new website (www.jackiekongfilms.com) and news of her upcoming genre film, Co-Existence, which she descibes as "a Cold-Blooded Romance". She is working on a new online platform that will allow those interested to immerse themselves in the 3-D world of the film. Not sure how that will work but we're definitely interested in finding out.
Any '80s video horror fan will be happy to know that her career has not 'ended', like it says on IMDb.
