The Toronto International Film Festival will honor one of Canada’s own, Montreal native Shawn Levy, with the inaugural Norman Jewison Award, also named after another Canadian great filmmaker.
The Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award is presented by The Budman Family, and recognizes Canadians in the film industry who have made a global impact with their careers. The awards presentation will take place at the TIFF Tribute Awards gala fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.
Levy originally set about pursuing a career in acting, attending Yale University. He turned to directing and received an Mfa from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1994. One of Levy’s first acting gigs was the low-budget horror 1987 movie, Zombie Nightmare, which got poked at on an episode of Comedy Central’s Mystery Science Theater 3000. Have you ever had a nightmare about being chased by zombies? Most people have. Do you think zombies have nightmares about us? These are the kinds of questions that keep my monkey brain somewhat sated; especially when I’m watching Zombie Nightmare (1987), a film that proffers voodoo, baseball, Batman, Thor, and Motorhead. So many queries, so few answers, so much fun.
Filmed in the summer of ‘86 in Quebec, Zombie Nightmare was supposed to have a Black-centric cast but writer (and ghost co-director) John Fasano (Black Roses) was told by director Jack Bravman (The Wetter the Better) that they’d have a hard sell with foreign investors, so the characters were changed. The more things stay the same, the more they stay the same.
Reviews were unkind, but the film somehow ended up grossing over a million and a half worldwide against a $180,000 budget after New World picked it up and...

Sometimes a long-running TV show finds itself linked to a certain holiday. Community had Christmas. The Simpsons has Halloween. Brooklyn 99 had Halloween, then changed it to Cinco de Mayo for scheduling reasons. Saturday Night Live has…Election Day, I guess? I probably should have thought this through a bit more.
While Mystery Science Theater 3000 has done a handful of Christmas-themed episodes, the series has a much deeper relationship with Thanksgiving. Turkey Day is essentially its legacy. It started on Thanksgiving and it always comes back to that one Thursday in late November, whether the show is on the air or not.
Back in 1988, Joel Hodgson created a new show idea inspired by a random image from the liner notes of an Elton John album, wherein a couple of silhouettes sit in front of a movie screen. He and some robot puppets would watch bad movies and crack jokes. While the...

From teenage werewolves to...regular werewolves, here are some prime Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes for Halloween.
It’s October and outside of checking out RiffTrax’s offerings, you’ll have to go back to the previous ten seasons to dive deep into a man and his robots making fun of B-movie horrors. So if you’re in the mood for the Satellite of Love this Halloween season, here are some of the best horror movie episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 to watch.
Just as a warning, the list does skew a little bit more to the Sci-Fi Channel era, but that's to be expected considering the library they had to play with.

The MST3K Kickstarter campaign is up, running, and funding episodes. If you're new to MST3K, here's a suggestion for getting started...
Turn down your lights (where applicable) - Mystery Science Theater 3000 is making a comeback. The Us series poking fun at bad movies from the comfort of a satellite several miles above the Earth ran for eleven years from 1988-1999, and creator Joel Hodgson has been raising funds to resume the experiment via Kickstarter. The new episodes will star The Nerdist’s Jonah Ray as the hapless human, with the internet’s Felicia Day down to play the evil scientist torturing Jonah with cheesy B-movies, with Patton Oswalt performing henchman duties.
As we write this, three new episodes have been funded, and a batch of six looks likely. However, Hodgson is hoping to reach $5.5 million and fund a full series of 12 new episodes, so if you...

I Am Thor
Directed by Ryan Wise
2015, USA / Canada /Finland / Sweden
Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are often associated with masculinity, aggression, and machismo but even by Heavy metal standards, the artist known as Thor (a.k.a. Jon Miki Thor) is an absolute beast!
The Norse god impersonator, semi-professional bodybuilder, performance artist, b-movie actor, and all-around nice guy is the subject of I Am Thor, an 84 minute documentary by director Ryan Wise which shines some insight into Thor’s wild life and documents his long-running come back. With a music career spanning five decades, Thor is one of the legends of rock-n-roll that not enough people know exists —and hopefully this film will change that. 15 years in the making and I Am Thor is finally here, and totally worth the wait.
I’ve seen some remarkable screenings over my 19 years of attending the Fantasia Film Festival. I’ll never forget the enthusiastic,...

News is quickly spreading this morning that John Fasano died last night. Details of his passing are unclear; he was 52 years ago. Fasano was a writer, director and producer. Genre fans will know him for Rock 'n Roll Nightmare and Black Rose, which he helmed in '87 and '88, respectively. He also directed The Jitters in '89. Before all of that, however, he worked on Zombie Nightmare upon settling down in Los Angeles.

I've said here a thousand times that the only thing that keeps me from rolling my eyes every time I hear Shawn Levy's name is Zombie Nightmare. He gets a lifetime pass for that. His acting in that cheesy as hell but magnificent horror flick is supreme. Oh, and maybe that he directed a handful of episodes for The Secret World Of Alex MacK. Yeah, that buys a pass from me. That doesn't mean I'll watch his movies when they hit the theater though. Levy just signed on to direct Will Smith in...

It was the 80s. Clothes were tighter, hair was bigger, and the most important things in life were to kick-ass and just f’n rock, man. The heavy metal way of life leaked into our horror films as well. Trick or Treat, Shock ‘ em Dead, The Gate, and Lone Wolf are prime examples of this strange marriage of metal and monsters. But one of the finest (and cheesiest) films of this lot is Rock’n’Roll Nightmare aka Edge of Hell. So grab your lycra tube top and hairspray. We are taking a trip to the great white north for the ultimate in horror metal.

In the 80s, rock music and horror movies went together like acid washed jeans and feathered hair. The trouble is, even though many horror movies had awesome rock soundtracks, the movies that specifically featured rock musician characters as heroes or villains varied wildly in quality. Although the rock horror movie has mostly gone the way of the 80s, I’m not sure any other type of music will ever have such a successful love affair with horror. I can’t picture people turning up for a movie called Pop Divas of the Apocalypse, or Death by Dubstep, or even Bloody Pit of Techno Bastards. But what do I know? I’m still stuck in the 80s. Here are 10 of the movies that are stuck with me.

I have to apologize to Shawn Levy. I can never unsee him as rad dude Jim in 1986s Zombie Nightmare. I should also apologize to you guys as well since I always bring it up. The film is just so amazingly terrible. For me, It's one of the best/worst movies ever. With Fox delaying the shit out of Fantastic Voyage 3D, it seems that they are going to give Frankenstein to Levy. This doesn't mean that Voyage is off the table, it just means that he needs something to do in the meantime. But why...

I hope you saved up your pennies folks, because today is a real doozy. The two biggest releases of the week have got to be the Blu-ray box sets for the Back to the Future Trilogy and the Alien Anthology, but beyond that we've also got something for the ladies (Sex and the City 2), a couple of solid thrillers (The Girl Who Played with Fire and Winter's Bone) and some campy horror fun (Lake Placid 3, Cannibal Girls). Criterion has also put out new releases for Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory and Nobuhiko Obayashi's House, and we've got HBO's You Don't Know Jack starring Al Pacino plus a new season of The Venture Brothers. What will you be picking up this week? P.S. Does anyone know if The Frighteners Blu-ray got delayed? I haven't seen any listings for it anywhere. Sex and the City 2 [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) The...

This week sees a ton of genre movies coming out on DVD and Blu- Ray. The biggest being Predators, followed up by the remake of the cult classic Night of the Demons, a sequel to Mirrors, and Anniversary editions for Rocky Horror Picture Show and Psycho. Add to that a slew of indie and classic horror and there is a lot to choose from.
Predators
Directed by Nimród Antal
Robert Rodriguez presents Predators, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors mysteriously brought together on a jungle planet. But when these cold-blooded human “predators” find themselves in all-out war against a new breed of alien Predators, it’s the ultimate showdown between hunter and prey. Predators also star Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Oleg Taktarov, and Louis Ozawa Changchien.

The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.
Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

[Our sincere thanks to the Fantasia Festival and Kier-La Janisse for offering up some of the excellent, exclusive materials from the festival blog for wider consumption here at Twitch.]
Hard rock will probably never have an icon as enduring as Lemmy Kilmister. As the mutton-chopped frontman for Motorhead, ejected bass player for Hawkwind, hard-drinkin', toy-collecting composer of the immortal Ace of Spades (theme song of Montreal's own Zombie Nightmare) and cab driver of the apocalypse, Lemmy has acquired an almost supernatural status in the rock pantheon. Two young fans - Wes Orshoski and Greg Olliver - were brave enough to approach him with the idea of making a documentary, and lived to tell the tale.
How did you go about approaching Lemmy with this doc idea? At any point did he get uncomfortable being filmed?
Wes Orshoski: We approached his manager, Todd Singerman, who with the band's creative consultant, Steffan Chirazi, sort of interviewed Greg and I over the phone a couple times... We sort of auditioned for them and for Lemmy. Both Todd and Steffan told us that...

Yes, this is a small story that will appeal only to those who subscribe to Netflix. But only if that percentage of our readership also really enjoys Mystery Science Theater 3000. So if you're not a Netflix member or you (somehow) hate MST3K, then I think you should probably skip ahead to some different articles. Today we have stuff about Showgirls 2 and the return of the Griswalds. Seriously.
But I'll let you in on a non-secret: The Mystery Science Theater 3000 dvds are a little pricey. Some collectors grab 'em all, others trade their homemade copies, and still others (like me) own none of 'em but still like to complain that the DVDs are a little pricey. So here's some awesome news, provided you're a Netflix subscriber: Eight, count 'em eight, excellently Mst-ied movies are now available for your enjoyment! Which ones?
Racket Girls! (1951) The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy!

It's time for more zombies and some undead love that doesn't have sharp teeth and teenage angst. Crackle (a TV/movie/media goodness website) has just launched a new web series called Wake Up Dead. Yeah, it's more on the TV side of things, being a series and all, but it's got enough Hollywood connections to make it Cinematical friendly. And it's a zombie comedy. Who doesn't like zombies?
The brainchild of John Fasano (the pen behind Another 48 Hours, Universal Soldier: The Return, Darkness Falls and helmer behind Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare), Dead follows a university student (Jon Heder) who wakes up dead. But rather than being a drooling, brain-dead zombie a la Dawn of the Dead, he's basically just himself -- or himself mixed with the perks and downfalls of undead life. (Krysten Ritter, John Gad, Wayne Knight, and Lexi Alexander also star.)
I talked with Fasano over the weekend,...

Creepshow (Bd) - Warner Bros.
Amazon.com says: Inspired by the controversial E.C. Comics of the 1950s--which also provided the title and inspiration for the popular Tales from the Crypt TV series--director George Romero and screenwriter Stephen King serve up five delightfully frightful stories. Utilizing comic-book panels, animated segues, and exaggerated lighting and camera angles, Romero and cinematographer Michael Gornick come very close to replicating a horror comic in film format. The results mix fine acting with the morbid sense...

Earlier this year I reported on Code Red DVD planning to release the never-before-seen 1995 slasher spoof Night of the Dribbler about a psycho in a basketball mask killing off a high school basketball team. At the time a release date was not set in stone. Now I find out that release date is next week, September 8th to be exact.
As Code Red DVD's website describes it:
Night of the Dribbler, a comedy slasher shot in 1995 but never released anywhere in the world, will make its world debut via Code Red DVD this summer! Some psycho wearing a basketball mask is killing off the high school basketball team, and it's up to the famous TV funnyman Fred Travelena to find the killer! In the vein of Peter Sellers films, Fred plays 3 roles in the movie! Canadian TV's Cold Squad's Gregory Calpakis also stars in this demented comedy horror film...

Often overlooked by horror fans Mystery Science Theatre 3000 was an excellent source for forgotten and obscure horror fans. With the release MST3K Xv horror fans are treated to two gems of horror/ sci-fi magic.
For those of you who may have blocked out the early 90’s, MST3K was a show with a premise so simple many of us kicked ourselves for not thinking of it first. Joel Robinson (Joel Hodgson) is a man stranded on a satellite in space with two robots, Crow T. Robot (Trace Beaulieu) and Tom Servo (Kevin Murphy) whose only task is to watch and berate the worst movies ever made. The show began its humble days on Ktma-tv in Hopkins, Minnesota but was quickly picked up by a fledgling Comedy Central, where it ran for 7 season then finally ended its days on the Sci-Fi Channel giving us a total of eleven incredible seasons. Part...

Andrew Clement was ten when he implored his father to see "The Exorcist," only to have his dad come back from seeing the William Friedkin horror classic and tell him, "You are not seeing that film!" These days, Clement is partners with Dick Smith, the man who was responsible for Linda Blair's spinning head and the pea soup, and takes pride in carrying on Smith's proud tradition -- "We did [a dummy] for the end of 'Cloverfield,' which was in the final frames of the film," said Clement. "And people are having this emotional reaction to this character dying and it's just a piece of my rubber."
Such rubber is the stuff ten-year-old's nightmares are made of, and as part of our weeklong celebration of the ingenious makeup magicians and creature creators like Clement that are precise in their scares and liberal with the red-tinged corn syrup,...
